Jó, 22

1. Elifaz de Teman, tomando a palavra, disse:

1. Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:

2. Porventura pode o homem ser útil a Deus? Só a ele aproveita a sua sensatez.

2. Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intelligent can benefit only himself?

3. De que serve a Deus que tu sejas justo? Que lhe acrescentas, se for imaculado o teu proceder?

3. Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?

4. E’ porventura pela tua piedade que ele te castiga, ou que entra contigo em juízo,

4. Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?

5. e não antes por causa da lua grande malícia, e das tuas inumerávis maldades?

5. No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!

6. Porque tu sem causa tiraste os penhores a teus irmãos, e aos nus despojaste dos seus vestidos.

6. You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,

7. Negaste água ao fatigado, e negaste pão ao faminto.

7. failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;

8. A terra é daquele que tem a mão forte, e quem se faz temer apossa-se dela.

8. handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,

9. Despediste as viúvas _(com as mãos)- vazias, e quebraste os braços dos órfãos.

9. sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.

10. Por isso estás cercado de laços, e um súbito temor te perturba,

10. No wonder, then, if snares are all around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;

11. no meio das trevas, sem (nada) ver, oprimido pela impetuosa inundação das águas.

11. if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.

12. Não ponderas tu que Deus é mais alto que o céu? Vê a fronte das estrelas, em que altura está! (ver nota)

12. Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?

13. E dizes: "Que sabe Deus? Pode ele julgar por entre trevas?

13. And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the dark cloud?

14. As nuvens o cobrem dum véu, e ele não vê; passeia pela abóbada celeste."

14. The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'

15. Porventura queres tu seguir o caminho antigo, que foi seguido pelos homens iníquos?

15. And will you still follow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,

16. Eles foram arrebatados (pela morte) antes do seu tempo, quando um rio destruiu os seus fundamentos;

16. those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,

17. eles diziam a Deus: "Retira-te de nós; que nos pode fazer o Omnipotente?"

17. for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'

18. Mas era ele que havia cumulado de bens as suas casas. Esteja longe de mim o conselho dos ímpios.

18. Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of the wicked!

19. Os justos verão (a sua ruína) e alegrar-se-ão, e o inocente escarnecerá deles (e da sua falsa doutrina):

19. At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:

20. Porventura não foi lançada por terra a sua soberba, e o fogo não devorou as suas relíquias?

20. 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'

21. Submete-te, pois, a Deus, e lerás paz, e assim colherás ótimos frutos.

21. Well then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and all your happiness will be restored to you.

22. Recebe lições da sua boca, e grava as palavras no teu coração.

22. Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.

23. Se voltares para o Omnipotente, de novo serás levantado, se afastares de tua casa a iniquidade.

23. If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,

24. Se lançares ao pó os lingotes de ouro, e o ouro de Ofir aos seixos da torrente,

24. if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,

25. o Omnipotente será o teu ouro, será para ti prata brilhante.

25. Shaddai will be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.

26. Então porás tuas delícias no Omnipotente, e levantarás o teu rosto para Deus.

26. Then Shaddai will be all your delight, and you will lift your face to God.

27. Tu lhe rogarás, e ele te ouvirá, e cumprirás os teus votos.

27. You will pray, and he will hear; and you will be able to fulfil your vows.

28. Formarás os teus projetos, que terão feliz êxito, e a luz brilhará em teus caminhos.

28. Whatever you undertake will go well, and light will shine on your path;

29. Porque quem se humilha, será glorificado, e quem (arrependido) tiver abaixado os olhos, será salvo.

29. for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.

30. O inocente será salvo, e será salvo pela pureza das suas mãos.

30. He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you will be saved.
