1. Eliú, continuando, disse:

1. Elihu went on speaking. He said:

2. Suporta-me um pouco, e eu me explicarei contigo, porque ainda tenho que falar em defesa de Deus.

2. Be patient a little longer while I explain, for I have more to say on God's behalf.

3. Tornarei a pegar no discurso desde o principio, e provarei que o meu criador é justo.

3. I shall range far afield for my arguments to prove my Maker just.

4. Verdadeiramente os meus discursos são sem mentira; far-te-ei ver que a (minha) doutrina é sólida.

4. I guarantee, nothing I shall say will be untrue: you have a man of sound learning here.

5. Deus é poderoso, mas não desdenhoso. é poderoso pela sua ciência,

5. God does not reject anyone whose heart is pure

6. Não deixa florescer os ímpios, e faz justiça aos pobres.

6. or let the sinner live on in all his power. He does accord fair judgement to the afflicted;

7. Não tirará (nunca) os seus olhos dos justos, e, ao fim, os colocará, com os reis, sobre o trono, numa glória eterna.

7. he does uphold what the upright deserve. When he raises kings to thrones, if they grow proud of their unending rule,

8. E, se estiverem em cadeias, atados com os laços da pobreza,

8. then he fetters them with chains, they are caught in the bonds of affliction.

9. ele lhes fará ver as suas obras, as suas maldades, cometidas por orgulho.

9. He shows them the import of their deeds, of the sins of pride they have committed.

10. Abrir-lhes-ã os ouvidos à correção e lhes falará para que se convertam da sua iniquidade.

10. In their ears he sounds a warning, ordering them to turn back from doing wrong.

11. Se ouvirem e obedecerem, acabarão os seus dias na felicidade, os seus anos em delícias.

11. If they take notice and obey him, the rest of their days are prosperous and the years pass pleasantly.

12. Porém, se não ouvirem, serão passados à espada, e perecerão na sua cegueira.

12. If not, they go down the Canal and perish in their stupidity.

13. Os corações impios entregam-se à cólera, não clamam a Deus, quando se vêem aprisionados.

13. The stubborn, who cherish their anger and do not cry for help when he chains them,

14. Morrerão em plena juventude, e a sua vida acabará como a dos dissolutos.

14. die in the bloom of youth or live among the male prostitutes of the temple.

15. Pelo contrário Deus livra o pobre, pela sua angústia, e abre-lhe o ouvido com a tribulação,

15. But God saves the afflicted by his affliction, warning him in his misery.

16. Ele te salvará (ó Job) do abismo estreito da angústia e te porá ao largo, em plena liberdade, (se te converteres), e tu repousarás à tua mesa cheia de gordas viandas.

16. You, too, he would like to snatch from torment. While you were enjoying boundless abundance, with rich food piled high on your table,

17. Mas se seguires as vias do impio, suportarás a sentença e o castigo.

17. you did not bring the wicked to trial and did not give fair judgement to the orphan.

18. Não te leve, pois, a ira, ao arrebatamento, nem te faça desanimar a grandeza da expiação.

18. Beware of being led astray by abundance, of being corrupted by expensive presents.

19. Poderá tirar-te da angústia o teu clamor, e todos os teus vigorosos esforços?

19. Take the powerful to law, not merely the penniless, those whose arm is strong, not merely the weak.

20. Não suspires pela noite (da morte), na qual entram os povos, um após outro.

20. Do not crush people you do not know to install your relations in their place.

21. Guarda-te de declinares para a iniquidade, ainda que a abraçasses, levado pela miséria.

21. Avoid any tendency to wrong-doing, for this is why affliction is testing you now.

22. Olha como Deus é excelso na sua fortaleza. Quem, como ele, é terrível?

22. See, God is sublime in his strength and who can teach lessons as he does?

23. Quem lhe prescreveu normas de conduta? Ou quem poderá dizer-lhe: Tu fizeste mal?

23. Who has even told him which course to take, or dared to say to him, 'You have done wrong'?

24. Lembra-te que deves celebrar a sua obra, a qual tantos homens cantaram.

24. Consider, rather, how you may praise his work, a theme that many have sung.

25. Todos os homens o vêem, mas cada um o vê de longe.

25. This is something that everyone can see, gazing, as we do, from afar.

26. Com efeito. Deus é grande e ultrapassa toda a nossa ciência, o número dos seus anos é incalculável.

26. Yes, the greatness of God exceeds our knowledge, the number of his years is past counting.

27. Ele atrai as gotas de água, e derrama-as em (forma de) chuva, na cerração.

27. It is he who makes the raindrops small and pulverises the rain into mist.

28. Caem dás nuvens, abundantemente sobre os homens.

28. And the clouds then pour this out, sending it streaming down on the human race.

29. Quem compreende a extensão das nuvens, os fragores do pavilhão (do Altíssimo)?

29. And who can fathom how he spreads the clouds, or why such crashes thunder from his tent?

30. Ele estende em volta de si a sua luz desde o alto, e cobre as extremidades do mar.

30. He spreads a mist before him and covers the tops of the mountains.

31. Por meio destas coisas exerce os seus juízos sobre os povos, e alimenta abundantemente os mortais (fecundando a terra),

31. By these means, he sustains the peoples, giving them plenty to eat.

32. Nas suas mãos esconde a luz, e manda-lhe que torne de novo.

32. He gathers up the lightning in his hands, assigning it the mark where to strike.

33. Faz conhecer a quem ama, que ele é possessão sua, e que pode subir até ela. (ver nota)

33. His crashing gives warning of its coming, anger flashes out against iniquity.
