Eclesiástico, 17

1. De la tierra creó el Señor al hombre, y de nuevo le hizo volver a ella.

1. The Lord fashioned human beings from the earth, to consign them back to it.

2. Días contados le dio y tiempo fijo, y dioles también poder sobre las cosas de la tierra.

2. He gave them so many days and so much time, he gave them authority over everything on earth.

3. De una fuerza como la suya los revistió, a su imagen los hizo.

3. He clothed them in strength, like himself, and made them in his own image.

4. Sobre toda carne impuso su temor para que dominara a fieras y volátiles.

4. He filled all living things with dread of human beings, making them masters over beasts and birds.

5. Les formó lengua, ojos, oídos, y un corazón para pensar.

6. De saber e inteligencia los llenó, les enseñó el bien y el mal.

6. He made them a tongue, eyes and ears, and gave them a heart to think with.

7. Puso su ojo en sus corazones, para mostrarles la grandeza de sus obras.

7. He filled them with knowledge and intelligence, and showed them what was good and what evil.

8. Por eso su santo nombre alabarán, contando la grandeza de sus obras.

8. He put his own light in their hearts to show them the magnificence of his works,

9. Aun les añadió el saber, la ley de vida dioles en herencia.

10. Alianza eterna estableció con ellos, y sus juicios les enseñó.

10. so that they would praise his holy name as they told of his magnificent works.

11. Los ojos de ellos vieron la grandeza de su gloria, la gloria de su voz oyeron sus oídos.

11. He set knowledge before them, he endowed them with the law of life.

12. Y les dijo: «Guardaos de toda iniquidad», y a cada cual le dio órdenes respecto de su prójimo.

12. He established an eternal covenant with them, and revealed his judgements to them.

13. Sus caminos están ante él en todo tiempo, no se ocultan a sus ojos.

13. Their eyes saw the majesty of his glory, and their ears heard the glory of his voice.

14. A cada nación asignó un jefe, mas la porción del Señor es Israel.

14. He said to them, 'Beware of all wrong-doing'; he gave each a commandment concerning his neighbour.

15. Todas sus obras están ante él, igual que el sol, e incesantes sus ojos sobre sus caminos.

15. Their ways are always under his eye, they cannot be hidden from his sight.

16. No se le ocultan sus iniquidades, todos sus pecados están ante el Señor.

17. La limosna del hombre es como un sello para él, el favor del hombre lo guarda como la pupila de sus ojos.

17. Over each nation he has set a governor, but Israel is the Lord's own portion.

18. Después se levantará y les retribuirá, sobre su cabeza pondrá su recompensa.

19. Pero a los que se arrepienten les concede retorno, y consuela a los que perdieron la esperanza.

19. Their actions are all as plain as the sun to him, and his eyes rest constantly on their conduct.

20. Conviértete al Señor y deja tus pecados, suplica ante su faz y quita los obstáculos.

20. Their iniquities are not hidden from him, all their sins are before the Lord.

21. Vuélvete al Altísimo y apártate de la injusticia, odia con toda el alma la abominación.

22. ¿Quién en el seol alabará al Altísimo si los vivientes no le dan gloria?

22. Almsgiving is like a signet ring to him, he cherishes generosity like the pupil of an eye.

23. No hay alabanza que venga de muerto, como de quien no existe; es el que vive y goza de salud quien alaba al Señor.

23. One day he will rise and reward them, he will repay their deserts on their own heads.

24. ¡Qué grande es la misericordia del Señor, y su perdón para los que a él se convierten!

24. But to those who repent he permits return, and he encourages those who have lost hope.

25. Pues no todo puede estar en poder de los hombres, que no es inmortal el hijo de hombre.

25. Return to the Lord and renounce your sins, plead before his face, stop offending him.

26. ¿Qué hay más luminoso que el sol? Con todo, desaparece. Mas la carne y la sangre sólo el mal conciben.

26. Come back to the Most High, turn away from iniquity and hold all that is foul in abhorrence.

27. Al ejército de lo alto de los cielos pasa él revista, pero polvo y ceniza son los hombres.

27. Who is going to praise the Most High in Sheol if we do not glorify him while we are alive?

28.

28. The dead can praise no more than those who do not exist, only those with life and health can praise the Lord.

29.

29. How great is the mercy of the Lord, his pardon for those who turn to him!

30.

30. For we cannot have everything, human beings are not immortal.

31.

31. What is brighter than the sun? And yet it fades. Flesh and blood think of nothing but evil.

32.

32. He surveys the armies of the lofty sky, and all of us are only dust and ashes.
