1 Maccabées, 4

1. Gorgias prit avec lui cinq mille hommes et mille cavaliers d'élite, et ils se mirent en marche pendant la nuit,

1. Then took Gorgias five thousand footmen, and a thousand of the best horsemen, and removed out of the camp by night;

2. pour s'approcher du camp des Juifs et les frapper à l'improviste; les hommes de la forteresse de Sion leur servaient de gui-des.

2. To the end he might rush in upon the camp of the Jews, and smite them suddenly. And the men of the fortress were his guides.

3. Judas, l'ayant appris, se leva, lui et les vaillants, pour frapper l'armée du roi qui était à Emmaüs,

3. Now when Judas heard thereof he himself removed, and the valiant men with him, that he might smite the king's army which was at Emmaus,

4. pendant que les troupes étaient encore dispersées hors du camp.

4. While as yet the forces were dispersed from the camp.

5. Gorgias arriva pendant la nuit au camp de Judas, mais il ne trouva personne; alors il se mit à leur recherche dans les montagnes, car il disait : "Ils fuient devant nous !"

5. In the mean season came Gorgias by night into the camp of Judas: and when he found no man there, he sought them in the mountains: for said he, These fellows flee from us

6. Dès que vint le jour, Judas apparut dans la plaine, avec trois mille hommes; seule-ment ils n'avaient, ni pour se couvrir ni pour frapper, les armes qu'ils auraient désirées.

6. But as soon as it was day, Judas shewed himself in the plain with three thousand men, who nevertheless had neither armour nor swords to their minds.

7. A la vue du camp fortifié des nations, des soldats couverts de cuirasses et des cavaliers qui faisaient patrouille autour d'eux, tous exercés au combat,

7. And they saw the camp of the heathen, that it was strong and well harnessed, and compassed round about with horsemen; and these were expert of war.

8. Judas dit aux hommes qui étaient avec lui : "Ne craignez pas leur multitude, et ne redoutez pas leur attaque.

8. Then said Judas to the men that were with him, Fear ye not their multitude, neither be ye afraid of their assault.

9. Rappelez-vous comment nos pères ont été sauvés dans la mer Rouge, lorsque Pha-raon les poursuivait avec une puissante armée.

9. Remember how our fathers were delivered in the Red sea, when Pharaoh pursued them with an army.

10. Crions maintenant vers le ciel, dans l'espoir qu'il daignera avoir pitié de nous, se souvenir de son alliance avec nos pères, et détruire aujourd'hui cette armée devant nos yeux.

10. Now therefore let us cry unto heaven, if peradventure the Lord will have mercy upon us, and remember the covenant of our fathers, and destroy this host before our face this day:

11. Et toutes les nations sauront qu'il y a quelqu'un qui délivre et sauve Israël."

11. That so all the heathen may know that there is one who delivereth and saveth Israel.

12. Alors les étrangers levèrent les yeux et les aperçurent marchant contre eux;

12. Then the strangers lifted up their eyes, and saw them coming over against them.

13. et ils sortirent du camp pour livrer bataille; en même temps ceux qui étaient avec Judas sonnèrent de la trompette.

13. Wherefore they went out of the camp to battle; but they that were with Judas sounded their trumpets.

14. On en vint aux mains, et les nations furent abattues et s'enfuirent dans la plaine.

14. So they joined battle, and the heathen being discomfited fled into the plain.

15. Les derniers rangs tombèrent tous par l'épée, et les Juifs les poursui-virent jusqu'à Gazara, et jusque dans les plaines de Judée, d'Azot et de Jam-nia, et ils leur tuèrent près de trois mille hommes.

15. Howbeit all the hindmost of them were slain with the sword: for they pursued them unto Gazera, and unto the plains of Idumea, and Azotus, and Jamnia, so that there were slain of them upon a three thousand men.

16. Alors Judas, avec son armée, revint sur ses pas et cessa de les poursuivre, disant au peuple :

16. This done, Judas returned again with his host from pursuing them,

17. "Ne soyez pas avides de butin, car un combat nous attend.

17. And said to the people, Be not greedy of the spoil inasmuch as there is a battle before us,

18. Gorgias et ses troupes sont près de nous dans la montagne; mais tenez ferme en ce moment contre nos ennemis, battez-les, et vous pourrez ensuite prendre sans crainte leurs dépouilles."

18. And Gorgias and his host are here by us in the mountain: but stand ye now against our enemies, and overcome them, and after this ye may boldly take the spoils.

19. Judas parlait encore, lorsqu'une division de Gorgias se montra sortant de la mon-tagne.

19. As Judas was yet speaking these words, there appeared a part of them looking out of the mountain:

20. Ils virent que les leurs étaient en fuite et que les Juifs avaient mis le feu au camp; car la fumée qu'on apercevait manifestait ce qui s'était passé.

20. Who when they perceived that the Jews had put their host to flight and were burning the tents; for the smoke that was seen declared what was done:

21. A cette vue, ils eurent une grande peur; et comme ils apercevaient en même temps l'armée de Judas rangée dans la plaine, prête à livrer bataille,

21. When therefore they perceived these things, they were sore afraid, and seeing also the host of Judas in the plain ready to fight,

22. ils s'enfuirent tous dans le pays des Philistins.

22. They fled every one into the land of strangers.

23. Judas revint pour piller le camp; ils empor-tèrent beaucoup d'or et d'argent, ainsi que des étoffes de pourpre violette et de pourpre écarlate, et de grandes richesses.

23. Then Judas returned to spoil the tents, where they got much gold, and silver, and blue silk, and purple of the sea, and great riches.

24. A leur retour, ils chantaient des cantiques, faisant monter vers le ciel des louanges au Seigneur : "Car il est bon, car sa miséricorde subsiste à jamais."

24. After this they went home, and sung a song of thanksgiving, and praised the Lord in heaven: because it is good, because his mercy endureth forever.

25. Une grande délivrance fut don-née à Israël en ce jour-là.

25. Thus Israel had a great deliverance that day.

26. Ceux des étrangers qui avaient échap-pé vinrent annoncer à Lysias tout ce qui était arrivé.

26. Now all the strangers that had escaped came and told Lysias what had happened:

27. En apprenant cette nouvelle, il fut attristé et abattu, parce que ses des-seins contre Israël avaient échoué et que les ordres du roi n'étaient pas exécutés.

27. Who, when he heard thereof, was confounded and discouraged, because neither such things as he would were done unto Israel, nor such things as the king commanded him were come to pass.

28. L'année suivante, Lysias rassembla une armée de soixante mille fantassins d'élite et de cinq mille cavaliers, afin de venir à bout des Juifs.

28. The next year therefore following Lysias gathered together threescore thousand choice men of foot, and five thousand horsemen, that he might subdue them.

29. Ils s'avancèrent vers la Judée et établirent leur camp près de Béthoron. Judas marcha contre eux à la tête de dix mille hommes.

29. So they came into Idumea, and pitched their tents at Bethsura, and Judas met them with ten thousand men.

30. A la vue de cette armée redoutable, il pria en disant: "Vous êtes béni, ô libérateur d'Israël, qui avez brisé la force du géant par la main de votre serviteur David, et livré le camp des Philistins entre les mains de Jonathas, fils de Saül, et de son écuyer.

30. And when he saw that mighty army, he prayed and said, Blessed art thou, O Saviour of Israel, who didst quell the violence of the mighty man by the hand of thy servant David, and gavest the host of strangers into the hands of Jonathan the son of Saul, and his armourbearer;

31. Enfermez cette armée dans les mains de votre peuple d'Israël, et qu'ils soient confondus avec leurs fantassins et leurs cavaliers.

31. Shut up this army in the hand of thy people Israel, and let them be confounded in their power and horsemen:

32. Inspirez-leur la terreur, abattez leur audace présomptueuse, et qu'ils soient ébranlés par leur défaite.

32. Make them to be of no courage, and cause the boldness of their strength to fall away, and let them quake at their destruction:

33. Faites-les tomber par l'épée de ceux qui vous aiment, et que tous ceux qui connaissent votre nom vous adressent des hymnes de louange."

33. Cast them down with the sword of them that love thee, and let all those that know thy name praise thee with thanksgiving.

34. Ils engagèrent le combat, et cinq mille hommes de l'armée de Lysias tombèrent devant les Juifs.

34. So they joined battle; and there were slain of the host of Lysias about five thousand men, even before them were they slain.

35. Voyant la déroute de son armée et l'intrépidité des soldats de Judas, qui se montraient disposés à vivre ou à mourir honorable-ment, Lysias retourna à Antioche et re-cruta des étrangers; il se promettait, après avoir augmenté son armée, de re-venir en Judée.

35. Now when Lysias saw his army put to flight, and the manliness of Judas' soldiers, and how they were ready either to live or die valiantly, he went into Antiochia, and gathered together a company of strangers, and having made his army greater than it was, he purposed to come again into Judea.

36. Alors Judas et ses frères dirent : "Voilà nos ennemis défaits; montons maintenant purifier le temple et le re-consacrer."

36. Then said Judas and his brethren, Behold, our enemies are discomfited: let us go up to cleanse and dedicate the sanctuary.

37. Toute l'armée se rassembla, et ils montèrent au mont Sion.

37. Upon this all the host assembled themselves together, and went up into mount Sion.

38. En voyant le sanctuaire désert, l'autel profané, les portes brûlées, des arbrisseaux croissant dans le parvis comme dans un bois ou sur les montagnes, et les chambres détruites,

38. And when they saw the sanctuary desolate, and the altar profaned, and the gates burned up, and shrubs growing in the courts as in a forest, or in one of the mountains, yea, and the priests' chambers pulled down;

39. ils déchirèrent leurs vêtements, se lamentèrent en grand deuil, répandirent de la cendre sur leur tête,

39. They rent their clothes, and made great lamentation, and cast ashes upon their heads,

40. se prosternèrent le visage contre terre, et, pendant que les trompettes sonnaient en fanfare, poussèrent des cris vers le ciel.

40. And fell down flat to the ground upon their faces, and blew an alarm with the trumpets, and cried toward heaven.

41. Alors Judas détacha un corps de troupes pour combattre les Syriens qui étaient dans la citadelle, jusqu'à ce que les lieux saints fussent purifiés.

41. Then Judas appointed certain men to fight against those that were in the fortress, until he had cleansed the sanctuary.

42. Puis il choisit des prêtres sans défauts, attachés à la loi de Dieu ;

42. So he chose priests of blameless conversation, such as had pleasure in the law:

43. et ils purifièrent le sanctuaire et transportèrent dans un lieu immonde les pierres souillées.

43. Who cleansed the sanctuary, and bare out the defiled stones into an unclean place.

44. On déli-béra sur ce qu'on devait faire à l'autel des holocaustes qui avait été profané,

44. And when as they consulted what to do with the altar of burnt offerings, which was profaned;

45. et l'heureuse pensée leur vint de le dé-truire, de peur qu'il ne fût pour eux un opprobre après que les Gentils l'avaient souillé.

45. They thought it best to pull it down, lest it should be a reproach to them, because the heathen had defiled it: wherefore they pulled it down,

46. Ils démolirent l'autel, et en dépo-sèrent les pierres sur la montagne du temple, dans un lieu convenable, en attendant la venue d'un prophète qui donnerait une décision à leur sujet.

46. And laid up the stones in the mountain of the temple in a convenient place, until there should come a prophet to shew what should be done with them.

47. Et ils prirent des pierres brutes, selon la loi, et construisirent un autel nouveau sur le modèle de l'ancien.

47. Then they took whole stones according to the law, and built a new altar according to the former;

48. Ils rebâtirent le sanctuaire, ainsi que l'intérieur du temple, et ils sanctifièrent les parvis.

48. And made up the sanctuary, and the things that were within the temple, and hallowed the courts.

49. Ils confectionnèrent de nouveaux ustensiles sacrés, replacèrent dans le temple le chandelier, l'autel des parfums et la ta-ble.

49. They made also new holy vessels, and into the temple they brought the candlestick, and the altar of burnt offerings, and of incense, and the table.

50. Ils firent fumer l'encens sur l'autel, allumèrent les lampes du chandelier et elles éclairaient dans le temple.

50. And upon the altar they burned incense, and the lamps that were upon the candlestick they lighted, that they might give light in the temple.

51. Ils pla-cèrent des pains sur la table et suspendirent les voiles.

51. Furthermore they set the loaves upon the table, and spread out the veils, and finished all the works which they had begun to make.

52. Après avoir achevé tous les ouvrages qu'ils avaient faits, ils se levèrent de grand matin, le vingt-cinquième jour du neuvième mois -- c'est le mois nommé Casleu -- de l'an cent quarante-huit,

52. Now on the five and twentieth day of the ninth month, which is called the month Casleu, in the hundred forty and eighth year, they rose up betimes in the morning,

53. et ils offrirent un sacrifice, selon la loi, sur le nouvel autel des holocaustes qu'ils avaient construit.

53. And offered sacrifice according to the law upon the new altar of burnt offerings, which they had made.

54. Dans le même mois et le même jour qu'il avait été profané par les nations, l'autel fut consacré de nouveau, au chant des psaumes, au son des harpes, des lyres et des cymbales.

54. Look, at what time and what day the heathen had profaned it, even in that was it dedicated with songs, and citherns, and harps, and cymbals.

55. Tout le peuple tomba sur sa face et adora et, levant les yeux vers le ciel, il bénissait Celui qui lui avait donné pros-périté.

55. Then all the people fell upon their faces, worshipping and praising the God of heaven, who had given them good success.

56. Ils célébrèrent la dédicace de l'autel pendant huit jours, et ils offri-rent des holocaustes avec joie, et des sacrifices d'actions de grâces et de louan-ges.

56. And so they kept the dedication of the altar eight days and offered burnt offerings with gladness, and sacrificed the sacrifice of deliverance and praise.

57. Ils ornèrent la façade du temple de couronnes et d'écussons, et réparèrent les entrées du temple et les chambres, et leur mirent des portes.

57. They decked also the forefront of the temple with crowns of gold, and with shields; and the gates and the chambers they renewed, and hanged doors upon them.

58. Il y eut parmi le peuple une très grande joie, et l'op-probre infligé par les nations fut ôté.

58. Thus was there very great gladness among the people, for that the reproach of the heathen was put away.

59. Judas, d'accord avec ses frères et toute l'assemblée d'Israël, établit que les jours de la dédicace de l'autel seraient célébrés en leur temps chaque année pendant huit jours, à partir du vingt-cinq Casleu, avec joie et allégresse.

59. Moreover Judas and his brethren with the whole congregation of Israel ordained, that the days of the dedication of the altar should be kept in their season from year to year by the space of eight days, from the five and twentieth day of the month Casleu, with mirth and gladness.

60. En ce même temps, ils construisirent sur le mont Sion une enceinte de hautes murailles et de fortes tours, afin que les nations ne vinssent plus, comme elles l'avaient fait auparavant, fouler aux pieds les saints lieux.

60. At that time also they builded up the mount Sion with high walls and strong towers round about, lest the Gentiles should come and tread it down as they had done before.

61. Et Judas y mit un détachement pour en avoir la garde, et pour sa défense. On fortifia Bethsur, afin que le peuple eût une forteresse en face de l'Idumée.

61. And they set there a garrison to keep it, and fortified Bethsura to preserve it; that the people might have a defence against Idumea.
