1 Maccabées, 3

1. Judas, son fils, surnommé Machabée, se leva après lui.

1. Then his son Judas, called Maccabeus, rose up in his stead.

2. Il avait pour auxi-liaires tous ses frères et tous ceux qui s'étaient joints à son père, et ensemble ils combattirent joyeusement les combats d'Israël.

2. And all his brethren helped him, and so did all they that held with his father, and they fought with cheerfulness the battle of Israel.

3. Il étendit au loin la gloire de son peuple; il revêtit la cuirasse comme un héros, il ceignit ses armes de guerre et engagea des batailles, proté-geant de son épée le camp d'Israël.

3. So he gat his people great honour, and put on a breastplate as a giant, and girt his warlike harness about him, and he made battles, protecting the host with his sword.

4. Il était dans l'action pareil au lion, comme le lionceau qui rugit sur sa proie.

4. In his acts he was like a lion, and like a lion's whelp roaring for his prey.

5. Il poursuivit les impies, fouillant leurs retraites, et livra aux flammes ceux qui troublaient son peuple.

5. For He pursued the wicked, and sought them out, and burnt up those that vexed his people.

6. Les impies re-culèrent effrayés devant lui, tous les ouvriers d'iniquité furent dans l'épou-vante, et sa main conduisit heureusement la délivrance de son peuple.

6. Wherefore the wicked shrunk for fear of him, and all the workers of iniquity were troubled, because salvation prospered in his hand.

7. Par ses exploits il causa de l'amertume à plusieurs rois, et de la joie à Jacob, et sa mémoire est à jamais bénie.

7. He grieved also many kings, and made Jacob glad with his acts, and his memorial is blessed for ever.

8. Il par-courut les villes de Juda et eu extermina les impies, et il détourna d'Israël la co-lère.

8. Moreover he went through the cities of Juda, destroying the ungodly out of them, and turning away wrath from Israel:

9. Son nom devint célèbre jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre, et il recueillit ceux qui allaient périr.

9. So that he was renowned unto the utmost part of the earth, and he received unto him such as were ready to perish.

10. Apollonius rassembla des troupes païennes, une grande armée tirée de la Samarie, pour combattre Israël.

10. Then Apollonius gathered the Gentiles together, and a great host out of Samaria, to fight against Israel.

11. Dès que Judas en fut informé, il marcha con-tre lui, le défit et le tua ; un grand nom-bre d'ennemis périrent, et le reste s'en-fuit.

11. Which thing when Judas perceived, he went forth to meet him, and so he smote him, and slew him: many also fell down slain, but the rest fled.

12. Les Juifs s'emparèrent de leurs dépouilles, et Judas prit l'épée d'Apollo-nius, et il s'en servit toujours depuis dans les combats.

12. Wherefore Judas took their spoils, and Apollonius' sword also, and therewith he fought all his life long.

13. Séron, chef de l'armée des Syriens, ayant appris que Judas avait rassemblé beaucoup de monde, une troupe de Juifs fidèles marchant avec lui aux combats,

13. Now when Seron, a prince of the army of Syria, heard say that Judas had gathered unto him a multitude and company of the faithful to go out with him to war;

14. il dit : "Je me ferai un nom et j'aurai de la gloire dans le royaume; je com-battrai Judas et ceux qui sont avec lui, qui méprisent les ordres du roi."

14. He said, I will get me a name and honour in the kingdom; for I will go fight with Judas and them that are with him, who despise the king's commandment.

15. Il fit donc une seconde expédition; avec lui monta une puissante armée d'impies, pour l'aider et tirer vengeance des en-fants d'Israël.

15. So he made him ready to go up, and there went with him a mighty host of the ungodly to help him, and to be avenged of the children of Israel.

16. Lorsqu'ils furent proches de la montée de Béthoron, Judas marcha à terre rencontre avec une petite troupe.

16. And when he came near to the going up of Bethhoron, Judas went forth to meet him with a small company:

17. Ses hommes voyant l'armée qui s'avançait contre eux, dirent à Judas: "Comment pourrons-nous, si peu nom-breux, combattre contre une si puissante multitude; surtout épuisés que nous som-mes par le jeûne d'aujourd'hui?"

17. Who, when they saw the host coming to meet them, said unto Judas, How shall we be able, being so few, to fight against so great a multitude and so strong, seeing we are ready to faint with fasting all this day?

18. Judas répondit : "C'est chose facile qu'une multitude soit enfermée dans les mains d'un petit nombre; pour le Dieu du ciel il n'y a point de différence à sauver par un grand nombre ou par un petit nom-bre.

18. Unto whom Judas answered, It is no hard matter for many to be shut up in the hands of a few; and with the God of heaven it is all one, to deliver with a great multitude, or a small company:

19. Car la victoire à la guerre n'est pas dans la multitude des combattants; c'est du ciel que vient la force.

19. For the victory of battle standeth not in the multitude of an host; but strength cometh from heaven.

20. Ils s'avancent contre nous, remplis d'orgueil et d'impiété, pour nous perdre, nous, nos femmes et nos enfants, et pour nous pil-ler.

20. They come against us in much pride and iniquity to destroy us, and our wives and children, and to spoil us:

21. Mais nous, nous combattons pour notre vie et pour notre loi.

21. But we fight for our lives and our laws.

22. Dieu les brisera devant nous; vous donc, ne les craignez pas."

22. Wherefore the Lord himself will overthrow them before our face: and as for you, be ye not afraid of them.

23. Dès qu'il eut fini de parler, il se jeta subitement sur eux: Séron fut battu et vit écraser son armée sous ses yeux.

23. Now as soon as he had left off speaking, he leapt suddenly upon them, and so Seron and his host was overthrown before him.

24. Judas le poursuivit sur la descente de Béthoron jusqu'à la plai-ne; huit cents hommes de leurs troupes furent tués, et le reste s'enfuit au pays des Philistins.

24. And they pursued them from the going down of Bethhoron unto the plain, where were slain about eight hundred men of them; and the residue fled into the land of the Philistines.

25. Alors commença à se répandre la crainte de Judas et de ses frères, et la terreur parmi les nations d'alentour.

25. Then began the fear of Judas and his brethren, and an exceeding great dread, to fall upon the nations round about them:

26. Son nom arriva jusqu'au roi, et tous les peuples parlaient des com-bats de Judas.

26. Insomuch as his fame came unto the king, and all nations talked of the battles of Judas.

27. Quand le roi Antiochus eut appris ces nouvelles, il fut transporté de colère; il donna des ordres et rassembla toutes les troupes de son royaume, une armée très puissante.

27. Now when king Antiochus heard these things, he was full of indignation: wherefore he sent and gathered together all the forces of his realm, even a very strong army.

28. Il ouvrit son trésor et donna à ses troupes une année de solde, et il commanda qu'elles fussent prêtes à tout.

28. He opened also his treasure, and gave his soldiers pay for a year, commanding them to be ready whensoever he should need them.

29. Alors il s'aperçut que l'argent manquait dans ses caisses; et les tributs de la pro-vince rapportaient peu, à cause des trou-bles et des maux qu'il avait déchaînés dans le pays, en voulant abolir les lois qui étaient en usage dès les jours an-ciens.

29. Nevertheless, when he saw that the money of his treasures failed and that the tributes in the country were small, because of the dissension and plague, which he had brought upon the land in taking away the laws which had been of old time;

30. Il craignit de ne pas avoir, comme il était arrivé plusieurs fois, de quoi fournir aux dépenses et aux libé-ralités qu'il prodiguait auparavant à profusion et plus largement que tous les rois qui l'avaient précédé.

30. He feared that he should not be able to bear the charges any longer, nor to have such gifts to give so liberally as he did before: for he had abounded above the kings that were before him.

31. Dans cet embarras extrême, il résolut d'aller en Perse pour lever les tributs de ces pro-vinces et recueillir beaucoup d'argent.

31. Wherefore, being greatly perplexed in his mind, he determined to go into Persia, there to take the tributes of the countries, and to gather much money.

32. Il laissa donc Lysias, personnage consi-dérable et de la famille royale, à la tête des affaires du royaume, depuis le fleuve de l'Euphrate jusqu'aux frontières de l'Égypte,

32. So he left Lysias, a nobleman, and one of the blood royal, to oversee the affairs of the king from the river Euphrates unto the borders of Egypt:

33. et pour prendre soin de son fils Antiochus jusqu'à son retour.

33. And to bring up his son Antiochus, until he came again.

34. Il lui confia la moitié de ses troupes et les éléphants, et lui donna des ordres pour l'exécution de tous ses desseins, et spécialement au sujet de tous les habitants de la Judée et de Jérusalem.

34. Moreover he delivered unto him the half of his forces, and the elephants, and gave him charge of all things that he would have done, as also concerning them that dwelt in Juda and Jerusalem:

35. Lysias devait envoyer contre eux une armée pour briser et anéantir la puissance d'Israël et le reste de Jérusalem, et effacer de ce lieu leur souvenir,

35. To wit, that he should send an army against them, to destroy and root out the strength of Israel, and the remnant of Jerusalem, and to take away their memorial from that place;

36. et pour établir dans tout leur pays des fils d'étrangers, auxquels il distribuerait leurs terres par la voie du sort.

36. And that he should place strangers in all their quarters, and divide their land by lot.

37. Puis, ayant pris avec lui l'autre moitié de ses troupes, le roi partit d'Antioche, sa capitale, en l'an cent quarante-sept, passa le fleuve de l'Eu-phrate et traversa le haut pays.

37. So the king took the half of the forces that remained, and departed from Antioch, his royal city, the hundred forty and seventh year; and having passed the river Euphrates, he went through the high countries.

38. Lysias choisit Ptolémée, fils de Dorymène, Nicanor et Gorgias, habiles capi-taines et amis du roi;

38. Then Lysias chose Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes, Nicanor, and Gorgias, mighty men of the king's friends:

39. et il envoya avec eux quarante mille hommes de pied et sept mille cavaliers, pour envahir le pays de Juda et le ruiner selon l'ordre du roi.

39. And with them he sent forty thousand footmen, and seven thousand horsemen, to go into the land of Juda, and to destroy it, as the king commanded.

40. Ils se mirent en marche avec toutes leurs troupes et, étant entrés en Judée, ils cam-pèrent près d'Emmaüs, dans la plaine.

40. So they went forth with all their power, and came and pitched by Emmaus in the plain country.

41. Quand les marchands du pays apprirent leur arrivée, ils prirent avec eux beau-coup d'argent et d'or, ainsi que des en-traves, et vinrent au camp des Syriens pour acheter comme esclaves les enfants d'Israël. A cette armée se joignirent les troupes de Syrie et celles du pays des Phi-listins.

41. And the merchants of the country, hearing the fame of them, took silver and gold very much, with servants, and came into the camp to buy the children of Israel for slaves: a power also of Syria and of the land of the Philistines joined themselves unto them.

42. Judas et ses frères, voyant que la situation avait empiré et que les armées ennemies campaient à leurs frontières, ayant eu aussi connaissance de l'ordre qu'avait donné le roi de détruire et d'exterminer leur peuple,

42. Now when Judas and his brethren saw that miseries were multiplied, and that the forces did encamp themselves in their borders: for they knew how the king had given commandment to destroy the people, and utterly abolish them;

43. se dirent les uns aux autres : "Relevons les ruines de notre peuple, et combattons pour notre peuple et notre sanctuaire!"

43. They said one to another, Let us restore the decayed fortune of our people, and let us fight for our people and the sanctuary.

44. L'assemblée se réunit donc pour être prête au combat, et pour prier et implo-rer pitié et miséricorde.

44. Then was the congregation gathered together, that they might be ready for battle, and that they might pray, and ask mercy and compassion.

45. Or Jérusalem était sans habitants, comme un désert; aucun de ses enfants n'y entrait ou n'en sortait, le sanctuaire était foulé aux pieds et les fils de l'étranger occupaient la forteresse; elle était la demeure des nations. La joie avait disparu de Jacob, la flûte et la harpe étaient muettes.

45. Now Jerusalem lay void as a wilderness, there was none of her children that went in or out: the sanctuary also was trodden down, and aliens kept the strong hold; the heathen had their habitation in that place; and joy was taken from Jacob, and the pipe with the harp ceased.

46. S'étant donc rassemblés, ils vinrent à Maspha, vis-à-vis de Jérusalem, parce qu'il y avait autrefois à Maspha un lieu de prière pour Israël.

46. Wherefore the Israelites assembled themselves together, and came to Maspha, over against Jerusalem; for in Maspha was the place where they prayed aforetime in Israel.

47. Ils jeûnèrent ce jour-là, se couvrirent de sacs, jetèrent de la cendre sur leur tête et déchirèrent leurs vêtements.

47. Then they fasted that day, and put on sackcloth, and cast ashes upon their heads, and rent their clothes,

48. Ils étendirent le livre de la loi, que les nations recherchaient pour y peindre les images de leurs idoles.

48. And laid open the book of the law, wherein the heathen had sought to paint the likeness of their images.

49. Ils apportèrent les vêtements sacer-dotaux, les prémices et les dîmes, et firent venir des Nazaréens qui avaient accompli le temps de leur voeu ;

49. They brought also the priests' garments, and the firstfruits, and the tithes: and the Nazarites they stirred up, who had accomplished their days.

50. et ils crièrent à haute voix vers le ciel, disant: "Que ferons-nous pour ces hommes, et où les conduirons-nous?

50. Then cried they with a loud voice toward heaven, saying, What shall we do with these, and whither shall we carry them away?

51. Votre sanc-tuaire a été foulé aux pieds et profané; et vos prêtres sont dans le deuil et l'humiliation.

51. For thy sanctuary is trodden down and profaned, and thy priests are in heaviness, and brought low.

52. Et voici que les nations se sont assemblées contre nous pour nous anéantir! Vous connaissez leurs desseins contre nous.

52. And lo, the heathen are assembled together against us to destroy us: what things they imagine against us, thou knowest.

53. Comment pourrons-nous tenir devant elles, si vous ne nous assistez pas?"

53. How shall we be able to stand against them, except thou, O God, be our help?

54. Et ils sonnèrent de la trom-pette et poussèrent de grands cris.

54. Then sounded they with trumpets, and cried with a loud voice.

55. Ensuite Judas établit des chefs du peuple : chefs de mille hommes, de cent, de cinquante et de dix.

55. And after this Judas ordained captains over the people, even captains over thousands, and over hundreds, and over fifties, and over tens.

56. Et il dit à ceux qui venaient de bâtir une maison, de prendre femme, de planter une vigne, et à ceux qui avaient peur, de s'en retourner chacun dans sa demeure, selon la loi.

56. But as for such as were building houses, or had betrothed wives, or were planting vineyards, or were fearful, those he commanded that they should return, every man to his own house, according to the law.

57. Puis l'armée se mit en marche et alla camper au sud d'Emmaüs.

57. So the camp removed, and pitched upon the south side of Emmaus.

58. Là Judas leur dit : "Ceignez-vous et soyez des braves, et tenez-vous prêts pour demain matin à combattre contre ces nations assemblées pour nous perdre, nous et notre sanctuaire.

58. And Judas said, arm yourselves, and be valiant men, and see that ye be in readiness against the morning, that ye may fight with these nations, that are assembled together against us to destroy us and our sanctuary:

59. Car mieux vaut pour nous mourir les armes à la main que de voir les maux de notre peuple et notre sanctuaire profané.

59. For it is better for us to die in battle, than to behold the calamities of our people and our sanctuary.

60. Quelle que soit la volonté du ciel, qu'elle s'accomplisse!"

60. Nevertheless, as the will of God is in heaven, so let him do.
