1 Maccabées, 11
1. Le roi d'Égypte rassembla une armée innombrable comme le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer, et de nombreux vais-seaux, et il cherchait à se rendre maître du royaume d'Alexandre par ruse et à l'annexer à son royaume.
1. And the king of Egypt gathered together a great host, like the sand that lieth upon the sea shore, and many ships, and went about through deceit to get Alexander's kingdom, and join it to his own.
2. Il s'avança donc vers la Syrie avec des paroles de paix ;les habitants des villes les ouvraient devant lui et accouraient à sa rencontre; car le roi Alexandre avait ordonné d'al-ler au-devant de lui, parce qu'il était son beau-père.
2. Whereupon he took his journey into Spain in peaceable manner, so as they of the cities opened unto him, and met him: for king Alexander had commanded them so to do, because he was his brother in law.
3. Mais, dès que Ptolémée était entré dans une ville, il y laissait de ses troupes pour la garder.
3. Now as Ptolemee entered into the cities, he set in every one of them a garrison of soldiers to keep it.
4. Lorsqu'il approcha d'Azot, les habitants lui montrètent le temple de Dagon brûlé, la ville elle-même et ses alentours en ruines, les cadavres épars et les restes de ceux qui avalent été brûlés dans la guerre ; car ils en avaient fait des monceaux sur la route.
4. And when he came near to Azotus, they shewed him the temple of Dagon that was burnt, and Azotus and the suburbs thereof that were destroyed, and the bodies that were cast abroad and them that he had burnt in the battle; for they had made heaps of them by the way where he should pass.
5. Et ils racontèrent an roi ce qu'avait fait Jonathas, afin de le rendre odieux; mais le roi se tut.
5. Also they told the king whatsoever Jonathan had done, to the intent he might blame him: but the king held his peace.
6. Jonathas se rendit auprès du roi à Joppé pour lui rendre hommage ; ils se saluèrent mutuellement et passèrent là la nuit.
6. Then Jonathan met the king with great pomp at Joppa, where they saluted one another, and lodged.
7. Jonathas accompagna le roi jusqu'au fleuve nommé Eleuthère, puis il retourna à Jérusalem.
7. Afterward Jonathan, when he had gone with the king to the river called Eleutherus, returned again to Jerusalem.
8. Le roi Ptolémée se rendit ainsi maître des villes maritimes jusqu'à Séleucie sur la mer, et il méditait de mauvais desseins contre Alexandre.
8. King Ptolemee therefore, having gotten the dominion of the cities by the sea unto Seleucia upon the sea coast, imagined wicked counsels against Alexander.
9. Il envoya des am-bassadeurs au roi Démétrius, pour lui dire : "Viens, faisons alliance ensemble, et je te donnerai ma fille qu'Alexandre a épousée, et tu régneras dans le royaume de ton père.
9. Whereupon he sent ambasadors unto king Demetrius, saying, Come, let us make a league betwixt us, and I will give thee my daughter whom Alexander hath, and thou shalt reign in thy father's kingdom:
10. Je me repens de lui avoir donné ma fille, car il a cherché à m'assassiner."
10. For I repent that I gave my daughter unto him, for he sought to slay me.
11. Il le rabaissait ainsi parce qu'il avait envie de son royaume.
11. Thus did he slander him, because he was desirous of his kingdom.
12. Ayant enlevé sa fille, il la donna à Démétrius; dès lors il rompit avec Alexandre, et leur hostilité devint publique.
12. Wherefore he took his daughter from him, and gave her to Demetrius, and forsook Alexander, so that their hatred was openly known.
13. Ptolémée fit son entrée à Antioche, prit le diadème d'Asie, mettant ainsi sur sa tête deux couronnes, celle d'Égypte et celle d'Asie.
13. Then Ptolemee entered into Antioch, where he set two crowns upon his head, the crown of Asia, and of Egypt.
14. En ce temps-là, Alexandre était en Cilicie, parce que les habi-tants de cette contrée s'étaient révol-tés.
14. In the mean season was king Alexander in Cilicia, because those that dwelt in those parts had revolted from him.
15. Dés qu'il apprit la trahison de son beau-père, Alexandre s'avança contre lui pour le combattre; le roi Ptolémée dé-ploya son armée, marcha à sa rencon-tre avec de grandes forces, et le mit en fuite.
15. But when Alexander heard of this, he came to war against him: whereupon king Ptolemee brought forth his host, and met him with a mighty power, and put him to flight.
16. Alexandre s'enfuit en Arabie pour y chercher un asile, et le roi Ptolémée triompha.
16. So Alexander fled into Arabia there to be defended; but king Ptolemee was exalted:
17. L'Arabe Zabdiel trancha la tête à Alexandre et l'envoya à Ptolé-mée.
17. For Zabdiel the Arabian took off Alexander's head, and sent it unto Ptolemee.
18. Le roi Ptolémée mourut trois jours après, et les Egyptiens qui étaient dans les forteresses furent tués par leurs habi-tants.
18. King Ptolemee also died the third day after, and they that were in the strong holds were slain one of another.
19. Et Démétrius devint roi, l'an cent soixante-sept.
19. By this means Demetrius reigned in the hundred threescore and seventh year.
20. En ces jours-là, Jonathas rassembla ceux qui étalent en Judée afin de s'em-parer de la citadelle de Jérusalem, et il dressa contre elle beaucoup de machines de guerre.
20. At the same time Jonathan gathered together them that were in Judea to take the tower that was in Jerusalem: and he made many engines of war against it.
21. Alors quelques hommes impies, qui haïssaient leur nation, allèrent trouver le roi Démétrius et lui rapportè-rent que Jonathas assiégeait la citadelle.
21. Then came ungodly persons, who hated their own people, went unto the king, and told him that Jonathan besieged the tower,
22. A ce récit, Démétrius fut irrité ; dès qu'il l'eut entendu, il se hâta d'accourir à Ptolémaïs et il écrivit à Jonathas de ces-ser le siège de la citadelle et de venir immédiatement le trouver à Ptolémaïs, pour conférer avec lui.
22. Whereof when he heard, he was angry, and immediately removing, he came to Ptolemais, and wrote unto Jonathan, that he should not lay siege to the tower, but come and speak with him at Ptolemais in great haste.
23. Lorsque Jonathas eut reçu cette lettre, il ordonna de continuer le siège et, ayant choisi pour l'accompagner quelques anciens d'Israël et plusieurs prêtres, il s'exposa au dan-ger.
23. Nevertheless Jonathan, when he heard this, commanded to besiege it still: and he chose certain of the elders of Israel and the priests, and put himself in peril;
24. Ayant pris avec lui de l'or, de l'argent, des vêtements et beaucoup d'au-tres présents, il se rendit auprès du roi à Ptolémaïs, et reçut de lui un accueil favorable.
24. And took silver and gold, and raiment, and divers presents besides, and went to Ptolemais unto the king, where he found favour in his sight.
25. Quelques hommes pervers de la nation portèrent contre lui des plaintes.
25. And though certain ungodly men of the people had made complaints against him,
26. Mais le roi fit pour lui ce qu'avaient fait ses prédécesseurs : il le com-bla d'honneurs, en présence de tous ses amis,
26. Yet the king entreated him as his predecessors had done before, and promoted him in the sight of all his friends,
27. lui confirma le souverain pontificat et toutes les distinctions qu'il avait précédemment, et le fit inscrire au nom-bre de ses premiers amis.
27. And confirmed him in the high priesthood, and in all the honours that he had before, and gave him preeminence among his chief friends.
28. Jonathas demanda au roi d'affranchir de tout tribut la Judée et les trois toparchies de la Samarie, et il lui promit en retour trois cents talents.
28. Then Jonathan desired the king, that he would make Judea free from tribute, as also the three governments, with the country of Samaria; and he promised him three hundred talents.
29. Le roi y consentit, et il écrivit surtout cela à Jo-nathas une lettre ainsi conçue:
29. So the king consented, and wrote letters unto Jonathan of all these things after this manner:
30. "Le roi Démétrius à son frère Jonathas et à la nation des Juifs, salut !
30. King Demetrius unto his brother Jonathan, and unto the nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:
31. Nous vous adressons une copie de la lettre que nous avons écrite à votre sujet à Lasthénès, notre cousin, afin que vous la connaissiez:
31. We send you here a copy of the letter which we did write unto our cousin Lasthenes concerning you, that ye might see it.
32. "Le roi Démétrius à Lasthénès, son père, salut !
32. King Demetrius unto his father Lasthenes sendeth greeting:
33. Nous avons résolu de faire du bien à la nation des Juifs, qui sont nos amis et observent ce qui est juste envers nous, à cause des bons sentiments qu'ils nous ont témoignés.
33. We are determined to do good to the people of the Jews, who are our friends, and keep covenants with us, because of their good will toward us.
34. Nous leur confir-mons et le territoire de la Judée et les trois cantons détachés de la Samarie peur être réunis à la Judée, savoir Ephraïm, Lydda et Ramathaïm avec toutes leurs dépen-dances ; en faveur de tous ceux qui vont sacrifier à Jérusalem nous faisons cette concession, au lieu des redevances qu'au-paravant le roi recevait d'eux chaque année sur les productions du sol et les fruits des arbres.
34. Wherefore we have ratified unto them the borders of Judea, with the three governments of Apherema and Lydda and Ramathem, that are added unto Judea from the country of Samaria, and all things appertaining unto them, for all such as do sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the payments which the king received of them yearly aforetime out of the fruits of the earth and of trees.
35. Et tous les autres droits qui nous appartiennent, à dater de ce jour, soit sur les dîmes et les tributs qui nous appartiennent, soit sur les marais salants et les couronnes qui nous étaient dues,
35. And as for other things that belong unto us, of the tithes and customs pertaining unto us, as also the saltpits, and the crown taxes, which are due unto us, we discharge them of them all for their relief.
36. nous leur en faisons encore remise complète. Il ne sera dérogé désormais et en aucun temps à aucune de ces faveurs.
36. And nothing hereof shall be revoked from this time forth for ever.
37. Maintenant donc, prenez soin de faire une copie de ce décret, et qu'elle soit, donnée à Jonathas et déposée sur la montagne sainte dans un lieu apparent."
37. Now therefore see that thou make a copy of these things, and let it be delivered unto Jonathan, and set upon the holy mount in a conspicuous place.
38. Le roi Démétrius, voyant que le pays était en paix devant lui, et qu'il n'avait plus à vaincre aucune résistance, ren-voya toute son armée, chacun dans ses foyers, à l'exception des troupes étran-gères qu'il avait recrutées dans les îles des nations ; et ainsi toutes les armées de ses pères devinrent ses ennemies.
38. After this, when king Demetrius saw that the land was quiet before him, and that no resistance was made against him, he sent away all his forces, every one to his own place, except certain bands of strangers, whom he had gathered from the isles of the heathen: wherefore all the forces of his fathers hated him.
39. Tryphon, qui avait été auparavant un des partisans d'Alexandre, voyant que toute l'armée murmurait contre Démétrius, alla trouver l'Arabe Emachuel, qui élevait Antiochus, jeune fils d'Alexandre.
39. Moreover there was one Tryphon, that had been of Alexander's part afore, who, seeing that all the host murmured against Demetrius, went to Simalcue the Arabian that brought up Antiochus the young son of Alexander,
40. Il le pressa de le lui livrer, afin de le faire régner à la place de son père; il lui ra-conta tout ce que Démétrius avait fait et la haine de ses troupes contre lui, et il demeura là un grand nombre de jours.
40. And lay sore upon him to deliver him this young Antiochus, that he might reign in his father's stead: he told him therefore all that Demetrius had done, and how his men of war were at enmity with him, and there he remained a long season.
41. Jonathas envoya demander au roi Démétrius de retirer les troupes qui étaient dans la citadelle de Jérusalem et dans les autres forteresses de la Judée, parce qu'elles faisaient la guerre à Israël.
41. In the mean time Jonathan sent unto king Demetrius, that he would cast those of the tower out of Jerusalem, and those also in the fortresses: for they fought against Israel.
42. Démétrius fit répondre à Jonathas : "Je ne ferai pas seulement cela pour toi et pour ta nation ; mais je veux te combler d'honneurs, toi et ta nation, aussitôt que les circonstances le permettront.
42. So Demetrius sent unto Jonathan, saying, I will not only do this for thee and thy people, but I will greatly honour thee and thy nation, if opportunity serve.
43. Maintenant donc, tu feras bien d'envoyer des hommes à mon secours, car toute mon armée a fait défection."
43. Now therefore thou shalt do well, if thou send me men to help me; for all my forces are gone from me.
44. Jonathas lui envoya à Antioche trois mille hommes des plus vaillants ; ils se rendirent auprès du roi, qui se réjouit de leur arrivée.
44. Upon this Jonathan sent him three thousand strong men unto Antioch: and when they came to the king, the king was very glad of their coming.
45. Les habitants de la ville se rassemblèrent dans l'intérieur même de la ville, au nombre de cent vingt mille, voulant tuer le roi.
45. Howbeit they that were of the city gathered themselves together into the midst of the city, to the number of an hundred and twenty thousand men, and would have slain the king.
46. Le roi s'étant réfugié dans le palais, les habitants occupèrent les rues de la ville et commencèrent à combattre.
46. Wherefore the king fled into the court, but they of the city kept the passages of the city, and began to fight.
47. Alors le roi appela les Juifs à son secours; tous ensemble se réunirent au-tour de lui, puis se répandirent à tra-vers la ville ; ils y tuèrent ce jour-là en-viron cent mille hommes;
47. Then the king called to the Jews for help, who came unto him all at once, and dispersing themselves through the city slew that day in the city to the number of an hundred thousand.
48. ils brûlèrent la ville, firent en ce jour-là un butin con-sidérable et délivrèrent le roi.
48. Also they set fire on the city, and gat many spoils that day, and delivered the king.
49. Voyant que les Juifs tenaient la ville à leur dis-crétion, les habitants perdirent courage et firent entendre au roi des cris suppliants :
49. So when they of the city saw that the Jews had got the city as they would, their courage was abated: wherefore they made supplication to the king, and cried, saying,
50. "Accorde-nous la paix, et que les Juifs cessent de combattre contre nous et contre la ville !"
50. Grant us peace, and let the Jews cease from assaulting us and the city.
51. En même temps, ils jetèrent leurs armes et firent la paix. Les Juifs acquirent beaucoup de gloire devant le roi et devant tous ceux qui étalent dans son royaume, et ils retournèrent à Jérusalem avec de riches dépouilles.
51. With that they cast away their weapons, and made peace; and the Jews were honoured in the sight of the king, and in the sight of all that were in his realm; and they returned to Jerusalem, having great spoils.
52. Le roi Démétrius put s'asseoir sur le trône de son royaume, et le pays fut en paix devant lui.
52. So king Demetrius sat on the throne of his kingdom, and the land was quiet before him.
53. Mais il re-nia toutes les promesses qu'il avait fai-tes ; il s'éloigna de Jonathan et ne réalisa pas les intentions bienveillantes qu'il lui avait témoignées, et il l'affligea beau-coup.
53. Nevertheless he dissembled in all that ever he spake, and estranged himself from Jonathan, neither rewarded he him according to the benefits which he had received of him, but troubled him very sore.
54. Après cela, Tryphon revint, amenant avec lui Antiochus, un jeune entant, et il le proclama roi et lui mit le diadème.
54. After this returned Tryphon, and with him the young child Antiochus, who reigned, and was crowned.
55. Autour de lui se rassemblèrent toutes les troupes que Démétrius avait licenciées; elles combattirent contre ce dernier, qui prit la fuite et fut défait.
55. Then there gathered unto him all the men of war, whom Demetrius had put away, and they fought against Demetrius, who turned his back and fled.
56. Tryphon s'em-para des éléphants et occupa Antioche.
56. Moreover Tryphon took the elephants, and won Antioch.
57. Alors le jeune Antiochus écrivit à Jona-than une lettre ainsi conçue : "Je te con-firme dans le sacerdoce et je t'établis sur les quatre territoires, et te donne le rang d'ami du roi."
57. At that time young Antiochus wrote unto Jonathan, saying, I confirm thee in the high priesthood, and appoint thee ruler over the four governments, and to be one of the king's friends.
58. Il lui envoyait en même temps des vases d'or et un service de ta-ble, avec l'autorisation de boire dans une coupe d'or, de se vêtir de pourpre et de porter une agrafe d'or.
58. Upon this he sent him golden vessels to be served in, and gave him leave to drink in gold, and to be clothed in purple, and to wear a golden buckle.
59. Et il établit Si-mon, son frère, gouverneur du pays qui s'étend de l'Echelle de Tyr à la frontière d'Egypte.
59. His brother Simon also he made captain from the place called The ladder of Tyrus unto the borders of Egypt.
60. Alors Jonathan sortit et se mit à par-courir le pays au-delà du fleuve ainsi que les villes; et autour de lui se rassem-blèrent, pour combattre avec lui, toutes les troupes de Syrie. Il vint donc à As-calon, dont les habitants vinrent au--devant de lui, lui rendant de grands honneurs.
60. Then Jonathan went forth, and passed through the cities beyond the water, and all the forces of Syria gathered themselves unto him for to help him: and when he came to Ascalon, they of the city met him honourably.
61. De là, il passa à Gaza. Les habitants lui ayant fermé leurs portes, il assiégea la ville, en brûla les alentours et les pilla.
61. From whence he went to Gaza, but they of Gaza shut him out; wherefore he laid siege unto it, and burned the suburbs thereof with fire, and spoiled them.
62. Alors ceux de Gaza implo-rèrent Jonathan, et il leur accorda la paix; mais il prit pour otages les fils de leurs chefs et les envoya à Jérusalem. Il parcourut ainsi la contrée jusqu'à Damas.
62. Afterward, when they of Gaza made supplication unto Jonathan, he made peace with them, and took the sons of their chief men for hostages, and sent them to Jerusalem, and passed through the country unto Damascus.
63. Jonathas apprit alors que les généraux de Démétrius se trouvaient à Cadès en Galilée, à la tête d'une armée nom-breuse, avec l'intention de le détourner de son entreprise.
63. Now when Jonathan heard that Demetrius' princes were come to Cades, which is in Galilee, with a great power, purposing to remove him out of the country,
64. Il marcha contre eux, après avoir laissé son frère Simon dans le pays.
64. He went to meet them, and left Simon his brother in the country.
65. Simon s'avança vers Bethsur, l'assiégea pendant beaucoup de jours et la cerna.
65. Then Simon encamped against Bethsura and fought against it a long season, and shut it up:
66. Les assiégés lui ayant demandé la paix, il la leur accorda, les fit sortir de la ville, en prit possession et y mit une garnison.
66. But they desired to have peace with him, which he granted them, and then put them out from thence, and took the city, and set a garrison in it.
67. Jonathas et son armée campèrent prés des eaux de Génésar, et le lendemain, dès l'aurore, ils pénétrèrent dans la plaine d'Asor.
67. As for Jonathan and his host, they pitched at the water of Gennesar, from whence betimes in the morning they gat them to the plain of Nasor.
68. Et voici que des troupes étrangères s'avançaient au-devant de lui dans la plaine, après avoir détaché contre lui une embuscade dans les montagnes, et elles marchèrent droit à sa rencontre.
68. And, behold, the host of strangers met them in the plain, who, having laid men in ambush for him in the mountains, came themselves over against him.
69. Tout à coup les hommes de l'embuscade sortirent de leur cachette et engagèrent le combat ; et les gens de Jonathas prirent tous la fuite.
69. So when they that lay in ambush rose out of their places and joined battle, all that were of Jonathan's side fled;
70. Personne ne resta, à l'exception de Mathathias, fils d'Absalom, et de Judas, fils de Calphi, généraux des troupes.
70. Insomuch as there was not one of them left, except Mattathias the son of Absalom, and Judas the son of Calphi, the captains of the host.
71. Alors Jonathas déchira ses vêtements, mit de la poussière sur sa tête et pria;
71. Then Jonathan rent his clothes, and cast earth upon his head, and prayed.
72. puis il retourna contre eux au combat, les fit reculer et les mit en fuite.
72. Afterwards turning again to battle, he put them to flight, and so they ran away.
73. A cette vue, ceux des siens qui s'enfuyaient revinrent auprès de lui, et tous ensemble ils poursuivirent l'ennemi jusqu'à Cades, où était son camp, et eux--mêmes campèrent en cet endroit.
73. Now when his own men that were fled saw this, they turned again unto him, and with him pursued them to Cades, even unto their own tents, and there they camped.
74. Il périt ce jour-là trois mille hommes de troupes étrangères, et Jonathas retourna à Jérusalem.
74. So there were slain of the heathen that day about three thousand men: but Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.
