1 Maccabées, 12
1. Jonathan, voyant que les circonstances étaient favorables, choisit des hommes et les envoya à Rome pour confirmer et renouveler l'amitié des Juifs avec les Romains.
1. Now when Jonathan saw that time served him, he chose certain men, and sent them to Rome, for to confirm and renew the friendship that they had with them.
2. Il envoya aussi aux Spar-tiates et en d'autres lieux des lettres dans le même sens.
2. He sent letters also to the Lacedemonians, and to other places, for the same purpose.
3. Ils se rendirent donc à Rome, entrè-rent dans le sénat et dirent : " Jonathas, grand prêtre, et la nation des Juifs nous ont envoyés pour renouve-ler l'amitié et l'alliance avec eux, telles qu'elles existaient auparavant."
3. So they went unto Rome, and entered into the senate, and said, Jonathan the high priest, and the people of the Jews, sent us unto you, to the end ye should renew the friendship, which ye had with them, and league, as in former time.
4. Et le sénat leur remit une lettre pour les autorités romaines de chaque lieu, recomman-dant de leur procurer un heureux retour dans le pays de Juda.
4. Upon this the Romans gave them letters unto the governors of every place that they should bring them into the land of Judea peaceably.
5. Voici la copie de la lettre que Jonathas écrivit aux Spartiates:
5. And this is the copy of the letters which Jonathan wrote to the Lacedemonians:
6. "Jonathas, grand prêtre, le sénat de la nation, les prêtres et le reste du peuple juif, aux Spartiates leurs frères, salut !
6. Jonathan the high priest, and the elders of the nation, and the priests, and the other of the Jews, unto the Lacedemonians their brethren send greeting:
7. Déjà, dans les temps passés, une lettre a été envoyée à Onias, grand prêtre, de la part d'Aréius qui régnait sur vous, attes-tant que vous êtes nos frères, comme en fait foi la copie ci-dessous.
7. There were letters sent in times past unto Onias the high priest from Darius, who reigned then among you, to signify that ye are our brethren, as the copy here underwritten doth specify.
8. Onias accueillit avec honneur l'homme qui était envoyé, et reçut la lettre ou il était clairement parlé d'alliance et d'amitié.
8. At which time Onias entreated the ambassador that was sent honourably, and received the letters, wherein declaration was made of the league and friendship.
9. Nous donc, quoique nous n'eussions pas besoin de ces choses, ayant pour consolation les saints Livres qui sont entre nos mains,
9. Therefore we also, albeit we need none of these things, that we have the holy books of scripture in our hands to comfort us,
10. nous avons essayé d'envoyer vers vous pour renouveler la fraternité et l'amitié qui nous unissent à vous, afin que nous ne vous devenions pas étrangers; car de nombreuses années se sont écoulées de-puis que vous avez envoyé vers nous.
10. Have nevertheless attempted to send unto you for the renewing of brotherhood and friendship, lest we should become strangers unto you altogether: for there is a long time passed since ye sent unto us.
11. Nous donc, en tout temps, nous nous sou-venons constamment de vous, et dans nos solennités et aux autres jours sacrés, dans les sacrifices que nous offrons et dans nos prières, comme il est juste et convenable de se souvenir de ses frères.
11. We therefore at all times without ceasing, both in our feasts, and other convenient days, do remember you in the sacrifices which we offer, and in our prayers, as reason is, and as it becometh us to think upon our brethren:
12. Nous nous réjouissons de votre prospérité.
12. And we are right glad of your honour.
13. Mais nous, de nombreuses calamités et des guerres incessantes nous assiègent; les rois qui nous entourent nous font la guerre.
13. As for ourselves, we have had great troubles and wars on every side, forsomuch as the kings that are round about us have fought against us.
14. Nous n'avons pas voulu, à l'occasion de ces guerres, être à charge, soit à vous, soit à nos autres alliés et amis.
14. Howbeit we would not be troublesome unto you, nor to others of our confederates and friends, in these wars:
15. Car nous avons le secours du ciel pour nous venir en aide, et nous avons été délivrés et nos ennemis ont été humiliés.
15. For we have help from heaven that succoureth us, so as we are delivered from our enemies, and our enemies are brought under foot.
16. C'est pourquoi nous avons choisi Numénius, fils d'Antiochus, et Antipater, fils de Jason, et nous les avons envoyés vers les Ro-mains pour renouveler avec eux l'amitié et l'alliance ancienne.
16. For this cause we chose Numenius the son of Antiochus, and Antipater he son of Jason, and sent them unto the Romans, to renew the amity that we had with them, and the former league.
17. Nous leur avons donc mandé d'aller aussi vers vous, de vous saluer et de vous apporter notre let-tre concernant le renouvellement de notre fraternité.
17. We commanded them also to go unto you, and to salute and to deliver you our letters concerning the renewing of our brotherhood.
18. Et maintenant vous ferez bien en nous répondant à ce sujet."
18. Wherefore now ye shall do well to give us an answer thereto.
19. Voici la copie de ta lettre qu'on avait envoyée à Onias:
19. And this is the copy of the letters which Oniares sent.
20. "Aréius, roi des Spartiates, au grand prêtre Onias, salut !
20. Areus king of the Lacedemonians to Onias the high priest, greeting:
21. Il a été trouvé dans un écrit sur les Spartiates et les Juifs que ces deux peuples sont frères, et qu'ils sont de la race d'Abraham.
21. It is found in writing, that the Lacedemonians and Jews are brethren, and that they are of the stock of Abraham:
22. Maintenant que nous savons cela, vous ferez bien de nous écrire touchant votre prospérité.
22. Now therefore, since this is come to our knowledge, ye shall do well to write unto us of your prosperity.
23. Nous aussi, à notre tour, nous vous écrirons. Vos troupeaux et vos biens sont à nous, et les nôtres sont à vous. -- Les porteurs de cette lettre ont ordre de vous faire des déclarations en ce sens."
23. We do write back again to you, that your cattle and goods are our's, and our's are your's We do command therefore our ambassadors to make report unto you on this wise.
24. Avant été informé que les généraux de Démétrius étaient revenus pour l'atta-quer avec une armée plus considérable qu'auparavant,
24. Now when Jonathan heard that Demebius' princes were come to fight against him with a greater host than afore,
25. Jonathas partit de Jérusalem et marcha à leur rencontre jus-qu'au pays d'Emath, car il ne leur laissa pas le temps d'envahir son pays.
25. He removed from Jerusalem, and met them in the land of Amathis: for he gave them no respite to enter his country.
26. Il envoya des espions dans leur camp, et, à leur retour, ils lui rapportèrent que les Syriens avaient résolu de le surpren-dre pendant la nuit.
26. He sent spies also unto their tents, who came again, and told him that they were appointed to come upon them in the night season.
27. Lorsque le soleil fut couché, Jonathas commanda aux siens de veiller et de se tenir en armes toute la nuit, prêts à combattre, et il détacha des sentinelles avancées tout au-tour du camp.
27. Wherefore so soon as the sun was down, Jonathan commanded his men to watch, and to be in arms, that all the night long they might be ready to fight: also he sent forth centinels round about the host.
28. Mais les ennemis, ayant appris que Jonathas et les siens se te-naient prêts à combattre, furent saisis de crainte, ils tremblèrent dans leur coeur; ils allumèrent des feux dans leur camp, et s'enfuirent.
28. But when the adversaries heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, they feared, and trembled in their hearts, and they kindled fires in their camp.
29. Jonathas et les siens ne s'aperçurent de leur retraite que le matin, car ils voyaient des feux allu-més.
29. Howbeit Jonathan and his company knew it not till the morning: for they saw the lights burning.
30. Alors Jonathas se mit à leur poursuite, mais il ne les rejoignit pas, car ils avaient traversé le fleuve Eleuthère.
30. Then Jonathan pursued after them, but overtook them not: for they were gone over the river Eleutherus.
31. Alors Jonathas se tourna vers les Arabes appelés Zabadéens; il les battit et s'empara de leurs dépouilles.
31. Wherefore Jonathan turned to the Arabians, who were called Zabadeans, and smote them, and took their spoils.
32. De là il alla à Damas et parcourut toute la contrée.
32. And removing thence, he came to Damascus, and so passed through all the country,
33. Simon, de son côté, s'étant mis en mar-che, s'avança jusqu'à Ascalon et jus-qu'aux forteresses voisines ;
33. Simon also went forth, and passed through the country unto Ascalon, and the holds there adjoining, from whence he turned aside to Joppa, and won it.
34. puis il se tourna vers Joppé et l'occupa, parce qu'il avait appris que la population avait le dessein de livrer la forteresse à Dé-métrius, et il y mit une garnison pour gar-der la ville.
34. For he had heard that they would deliver the hold unto them that took Demetrius' part; wherefore he set a garrison there to keep it.
35. A son retour à Jérusalem, Jonathas convoqua les anciens du peuple et réso-lut avec eux de construire des forteresses en Judée,
35. After this came Jonathan home again, and calling the elders of the people together, he consulted with them about building strong holds in Judea,
36. d'exhausser les murailles de Jérusalem et de bâtir un mur élevé entre la citadelle et la ville, afin de séparer l'une de l'autre, de manière que la cita-delle fût isolée et qu'on n'y pût ni vendre ni acheter.
36. And making the walls of Jerusalem higher, and raising a great mount between the tower and the city, for to separate it from the city, that so it might be alone, that men might neither sell nor buy in it.
37. Des ouvriers étant rassem-blés pour construire la ville, on se mit au mur qui s'élevait au-dessus du tor-rent de Cédron. vers l'orient, et l'on ré-para la partie appelée Caphénatha.
37. Upon this they came together to build up the city, forasmuch as part of the wall toward the brook on the east side was fallen down, and they repaired that which was called Caphenatha.
38. Simon, de son côté, bâtit Hadida dans la Séphéla, et il y mit des portes et des verrous.
38. Simon also set up Adida in Sephela, and made it strong with gates and bars.
39. Cependant Tryphon aspirait à devenir roi d'Asie, à ceindre le diadème et à mettre la main sur le roi Antiochus.
39. Now Tryphon went about to get the kingdom of Asia, and to kill Antiochus the king, that he might set the crown upon his own head.
40. Crai-gnant que Jonathas ne le laissât pas faire et ne combattit contre lui, il cherchait le moyen de se saisir de sa personne et de le mettre à mort.
40. Howbeit he was afraid that Jonathan would not suffer him, and that he would fight against him; wherefore he sought a way how to take Jonathan, that he might kill him. So he removed, and came to Bethsan.
41. S'étant donc mis en route, il vint à Bethsan. Jonathas s'a-vança à sa rencontre, avec quarante mille hommes, guerriers d'élite, et il mar-cha sur Bethsan.
41. Then Jonathan went out to meet him with forty thousand men chosen for the battle, and came to Bethsan.
42. Voyant que Jonathas était venu avec une armée nombreuse, Tryphon crai-gnit de mettre la main sur lui.
42. Now when Tryphon saw Jonathan came with so great a force, he durst not stretch his hand against him;
43. Il le reçut avec honneur, le recommanda à tous ses amis, lui offrit des présents et ordonna à ses troupes de lui obéir comme à lui-même.
43. But received him honourably, and commended him unto all his friends, and gave him gifts, and commanded his men of war to be as obedient unto him, as to himself.
44. Et il dit à Jonathas : "Pourquoi as-tu fatigué tout ce peuple, puisqu'il n'y a pas de guerre au-tre nous?
44. Unto Jonathan also he said, Why hast thou brought all this people to so great trouble, seeing there is no war betwixt us?
45. Renvoie-les donc dans leurs maisons, mais choisis-en quelques-uns pour t'accompagner et viens avec moi à Ptolémaïs ; je te livrerai cette ville, ainsi que les autres forteresses, les autres trou-pes et tous les officiers royaux, puis je retournerai à Antioche; car c'est pour cela que je suis venu."
45. Therefore send them now home again, and choose a few men to wait on thee, and come thou with me to Ptolemais, for I will give it thee, and the rest of the strong holds and forces, and all that have any charge: as for me, I will return and depart: for this is the cause of my coming.
46. Jonathas le crut et fit comme il avait dit ; il renvoya son armée, qui s'en retourna en Judée.
46. So Jonathan believing him did as he bade him, and sent away his host, who went into the land of Judea.
47. Il garda avec lui trois mille hommes, dont il détacha deux mille en Galilée, et mille seulement l'accompagnèrent.
47. And with himself he retained but three thousand men, of whom he sent two thousand into Galilee, and one thousand went with him.
48. Mais dès que Jonathas fut entré à Ptolémaïs, les habitants fermèrent les portes de la ville, se saisirent de lui et tuèrent par l'épée tous ceux qui étaient entrés avec lui.
48. Now as soon as Jonathan entered into Ptolemais, they of Ptolemais shut the gates and took him, and all them that came with him they slew with the sword.
49. En même temps Tryphon envoya une armée et des cavaliers en Galilée et dans la grande plaine, pour massacrer tous les hommes de Jonathas.
49. Then sent Tryphon an host of footmen and horsemen into Galilee, and into the great plain, to destroy all Jonathan's company.
50. Mais ceux-ci, ayant entendu dire que Jonathas avait été pris et mis à mort avec tous ceux qui l'accompagnaient, s'encouragèrent mu-tuellement et se mirent en marche, les rangs serrés, prêts à combattre.
50. But when they knew that Jonathan and they that were with him were taken and slain, they encouraged one another; and went close together, prepared to fight.
51. Ceux qui les poursuivaient, voyant qu'ils étaient résolus à défendre leur vie, revinrent sur leurs pas; et eux rentrèrent tous sans être inquiétés dans le pays de Juda.
51. They therefore that followed upon them, perceiving that they were ready to fight for their lives, turned back again.
52. Ils pleurèrent Jonathas et ses compagnons, et une grande crainte s'empara d'eux, et tout Israël mena grand deuil.
52. Whereupon they all came into the land of Judea peaceably, and there they bewailed Jonathan, and them that were with him, and they were sore afraid; wherefore all Israel made great lamentation.
53. Alors toutes les nations d'alentour cherchèrent à les perdre, car elles disaient :
53. Then all the heathen that were round about then sought to destroy them: for said they, They have no captain, nor any to help them: now therefore let us make war upon them, and take away their memorial from among men.
