Daniel, 4

1. Yo, Nabucodonosor, estaba tranquilo en mi casa y vivía contento en mi palacio, cuando tuve un sueño que me aterrorizó.

1. I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at peace in my house and content in my palace when I had a dream which appalled me.

2. Las pesadillas que tuve en mi cama y las visiones que me pasaron por la mente me aterraron.

2. The nightmares I had as I lay in bed, and the visions that passed through my mind tormented me.

3. Entonces di orden que trajeran a mi presencia a todos los sabios de Babilonia para que me explicaran el sueño.

3. So I summoned all the wise men of Babylon that they might explain to me what the dream meant.

4. Vinieron magos, adivinos y astrólogos y, en su presencia, conté el sueño, pero no supieron explicármelo.

4. The wise men, seers and astrologers came, and I recounted the dream to them, but they could not explain it to me.

5. Después se presentó Daniel ante mí, por sobrenombre Beltsasar, según el nombre de mi dios, pues en él reside el espíritu de los dioses santos; yo le conté el sueño en esta forma:

5. So Daniel came in before me - he was renamed Belteshazzar after the name of my god, for in him dwells the spirit of the Holy God. I told him my dream in this way:

6. Beltsasar, jefe de los magos, sé que posees el espíritu del Dios santo y que ningún misterio te ofrece dificultad; mira el sueño que tuve y explícamelo

6. Belteshazzar, chief of the wise men, I know that you have the spirit of the Holy God and that no mystery is ever difficult for you. Examine the dream I have had and explain it to me.

7. En mi cama soñaba así: había un árbol en el centro de la tierra, de altura muy grande

7. These were my dreams as I lay in bed. There was a tree at the center of the world; it was very tall.

8. El árbol creció, se hizo corpulento, llegó hasta el cielo, y desde los confines de la tierra podían verse sus ramas

8. The tree grew, it became big and reached up to heaven, and its branches could be seen from the ends of the earth.

9. Su ramaje era hermoso y su fruto abundante, había en él comida para todos, a su sombra se protegían los animales del campo, en sus ramas anidaban los pájaros del cielo y todos los seres vivos se alimentaban de él

9. Its leaves were beautiful, its fruits abundant; there was food for all in it. Animals of the field found refuge in its shade, the birds of heaven nested in its branches and all living things fed on it.

10. Yo contemplaba esta visión interior, cuando un ángel, un santo, bajó del cielo

10. I was looking at this interior vision when a watchful one, a holy one, came down from heaven.

11. Con voz fuerte gritaba: Derriben el árbol, corten sus ramas, arranquen sus hojas y tiren sus frutos; que se vayan las bestias de debajo de él y las aves también.

11. He cried in a loud voice: Cut the tree down, cut off its branches, strip off its leaves and throw away its fruits. Let the beasts flee from under it and the birds as well.

12. Pero dejen en tierra el tronco y las raíces atados con hierro y bronce, entre la hierba del campo; que lo bañe el rocío del cielo, y participe con los animales de la tierra;

12. But leave in the earth the stump and the roots bound with iron and bronze bands, in the grass of the field. Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, let him share the grass of the earth with the animals.

13. que su corazón deje de ser humano, y se le dé un corazón de bestia y pasen siete tiempos sobre él

13. Let his heart cease from being human, and let a beast's heart be given him and pass over him seven times.

14. Es la sentencia dictada por los ángeles, la cuestión decidida por los santos para que todo ser viviente sepa que el Altísimo está más arriba que cualquier autoridad humana; él da el poder a quien le agrada y exalta al más humilde de los hombres

14. This is the sentence given by the watchful ones, the question settled by the holy ones, so that every living thing may know that the Most High is higher than any human authority. He confers power on whom he pleases and raises the most humble of men.

15. Así fue el sueño que tuve yo, el rey Nabucodonosor. Tú, Beltsasar, explícamelo, ya que ninguno de los sabios de mi reino ha podido darme su interpretación; pero tú puedes, porque en ti reside el espíritu de los dioses santos

15. This was the dream I had, I, King Nebuchadnezzar. You, Belteshazzar, explain it to me, since not one of the wise men in my kingdom has been able to interpret it for me. But you can, for the spirit of the Holy God dwells in you.

16. Entonces, Daniel, por sobrenombre Beltsasar, quedó un instante aturdido y pareció muy turbado. El rey tomó la palabra y dijo: «Beltsasar, ¿qué hay en ese sueño o en su interpretación que te turbe tanto?» Respondió Beltsasar: «Señor mío, ¡ojalá que este sueño sea para tus enemigos y su contenido se refiera a tus adversarios

16. Then Daniel, renamed Belteshazzar, was stunned for a while and looked very much upset. The king said, "Belteshazzar, what is in that dream or in its interpretation that upsets you so?" Belteshazzar answered,

17. El árbol que viste, que se hizo grande y corpulento, cuya altura llegaba hasta el cielo y que era visible en toda la tierra,

17. "My lord, may this dream be meant for your enemies and its content refer to your foes!"

18. que tenía hermoso ramaje y fruto abundante en el que había alimentos para todos, bajo el cual se refugiaban los animales del campo y en cuyas ramas anidaban las aves del cielo,

18. The tree you saw, which grew big and strong, and reached to heaven and was visible through all the earth, with beautiful leaves and abundant fruit, which had food for all, under which animals of the field found refuge and in whose branches the birds of heaven built their nests -

19. este árbol eres tú, oh rey, cuyo poder ha crecido llegando hasta el cielo y cuyo imperio se extiende hasta los confines de la tierra

19. this tree is you, O King, whose power has increased reaching up to heaven, whose empire extends to the ends of the earth.

20. En cuanto a lo que ha visto el rey, un ángel, un santo que bajaba del cielo y decía: «Corten el árbol, destruyéndolo, pero el tronco y las raíces déjenlos en tierra, con ataduras de hierro y bronce, entre la hierba del campo, que lo moje el rocío del cielo y participe de la suerte de los animales del campo hasta que hayan pasado por él siete tiempos, mira que voy a explicártelo

20. Now, regarding what the king has seen: a watchful one, a holy one, who came down from heaven and said: Cut the tree down, destroy it, but leave the stump and the roots in the ground with bands of iron and bronze, in the grass of the field; let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and share the lot of the animals of the field until they have passed over him seven times.

21. Este es el decreto del Altísimo respecto al rey, mi señor.

21. Now I shall explain it to you: This is the decree of the Most High regarding the king, my lord.

22. Serás echado de entre los hombres y vivirás con las bestias del campo; comerás hierba como los bueyes, y te bañará el rocío del cielo; siete tiempos pasarán por ti, hasta que reconozcas que el Altísimo está más arriba que cualquier autoridad humana; él da el poder al que le agrada

22. You shall be driven out from among men and live with the beasts of the field. You shall eat grass like the oxen, and be drenched by the dew of heaven. Seven times shall pass over you until you acknowledge that the Most High is higher than any human authority, and that he gives the power to whom he pleases.

23. La orden de dejar el tronco y las raíces significa que recuperarás tu reino cuando reconozcas que todo poder viene del Cielo.

23. The order to leave the stump and the roots means that you shall recover your kingdom when you have acknowledged that all power comes from heaven.

24. Por eso, rey, acepta mi consejo: borra tus pecados con obras de justicia y tus maldades demostrando misericordia con los pobres; tal vez hagas durar tu prosperidad con esto.

24. May it then please the king to accept my advice: wipe out your sins with works of justice, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; then perhaps you may lengthen your prosperity."

25. Todo esto sucedió al rey Nabucodonosor.

25. All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar.

26. Doce meses después, paseándose por la terraza del palacio real de Babilonia,

26. Twelve months later, while walking on the roof of the royal palace in Babylon,

27. el rey decía: «¿No es ésta la gran Babilonia que yo edifiqué como mi residencia real, con la fuerza de mi poder y para gloria de mi majestad?

27. the king said, "Is this not the great Babylon I built with the strength of my own power as my royal residence, and for the glory of my majesty?"

28. Estas palabras estaban aún en la boca del rey, cuando bajó del cielo una voz ««Rey Nabucodonosor, a ti te hablo. Se te acabó el imperio

28. These words were still in the mouth of the king when a voice came down from heaven: "King Nebuchadnezzar, I speak to you: your empire is finished.

29. Serás echado de entre los hombres, vivirás con los animales del campo; comerás hierba como los bueyes y siete tiempos pasarán por ti, hasta que reconozcas que el Altísimo dispone del poder entre los hombres y que se lo da a quien le agrada.

29. You shall be driven from among men, and live with the animals of the field; you shall eat grass like oxen and seven times shall pass over you until you acknowledge that the Most High disposes of the power among men and gives it to whom he pleases."

30. E inmediatamente se cumplieron esas palabras en Nabucodonosor: fue arrojado de entre los hombres, se alimentó de hierba, como los bueyes, el rocío del cielo mojó su cuerpo, de modo que le crecieron los cabellos como plumas de águila y las uñas como las de las aves

30. These words were fulfilled at once. Nebuchadnezzar was driven from among men, he fed on grass like oxen, his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird.

31. Al cabo del tiempo fijado, yo, Nabucodonosor, levanté los ojos al cielo y la razón volvió a mí; entonces bendije al Altísimo ¡¡Alabado y glorificado el que vive eternamente, cuyo imperio es eterno, y cuyo reino durará por todas las generaciones

31. At the end of this time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven and my reason returned to me; so I blessed the Most High: Blessed and glorified is he who lives for ever, whose dominion is everlasting and whose kingdom lasts through all generations.

32. Los habitantes todos de la tierra son ante él como si no contaran. Hace lo que él quiere con el ejército del cielo y con los habitantes de la tierra. Nadie puede detener su mano o pedirle cuentas

32. All the inhabitants of the earth are before him as if they were nothing. He does as he pleases with the army of heaven and the inhabitants of the earth. No one can stop his hand or ask him to render an account.

33. En ese momento recobré la razón; recuperé mi trono y empecé nuevamente a gobernar, para gloria de mi reino. Mis consejeros y mis notables me reclamaron, me restablecieron en mi reino y se me dio un poder mayor todavía

33. At that moment, I regained my reason, I recovered my throne and again began to govern, for the glory of my kingdom. My counselors and my noblemen acclaimed me, they restored me to my throne and I was given still greater power.

34. Por eso ahora, yo, Nabucodonosor, alabo, ensalzo y glorifico al Rey del Cielo, porque todas sus obras son verdaderas, y justos todos sus caminos; él sabe humillar a los que proceden con orgullo.

34. So now, I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise, exalt and glorify the King of Heaven. For all his works are true, and his ways are all just; he knows how to humble those who walk in pride.
