Daniel, 14

1. El rey Astiages fue a reunirse con sus padres y le sucedió Ciro, el Persa.

1. When King Astyages died, Cyrus the Persian ascended the throne.

2. Daniel era comensal del rey y más estimado que ningún otro de sus amigos. Daniel y los sacerdotes de Bel

2. Daniel was very close to the king, who held him in higher esteem than any of his other friends.

3. Tenían los babilonios un ídolo llamado Bel, en el que se gastaban diariamente más de seiscientos kilos de flor de harina, cuarenta ovejas y más de doscientos litros de vino.

3. The Babylonians had an idol called Bel, to which twelve bushels of fine flour, forty sheep, and six measures of wine were offered daily.

4. El rey también lo adoraba y todos los días iba a venerar al ídolo. En cambio, Daniel adoraba a su Dios

4. The king took part in this cult and worshiped the idol every day. Daniel, on the other hand, worshiped only his own God.

5. Le dijo el rey: «¿Por qué no adoras a Bel?» El respondió: «Porque yo no venero a ídolos hechos por mano del hombre, sino sólo al Dios vivo que hizo el cielo y la tierra y que tiene poder sobre todo viviente.»

5. And the king asked him, "Why don't you worship Bel?" Daniel answered, "I worship no man-made idols, but only the living God who made heaven and earth and rules over all mankind."

6. El rey le dijo: «¿Crees que Bel no es un Dios vivo?, ¿no ves todo lo que come y bebe a diario?

6. The king asked, "Don't you think Bel is a living god? Don't you see how much he eats and drinks every day?"

7. Daniel se echó a reír y dijo: «No te engañes, rey; ese ídolo por dentro es de barro, y por fuera, de cobre, y no ha comido jamás.»

7. Daniel laughed. "Do not be deceived, O king. This is only clay inside and bronze outside. It never ate or drank anything."

8. Al escucharlo el rey se enojó, mandó llamar a sus sacerdotes y les dijo: «Si no me dicen quién es el que come por todo este dinero, morirán; pero si demuestran que el que lo come es Bel, morirá Daniel, por haber blasfemado contra Bel.»

8. Enraged, the king called his priests and said to them, "If you will not tell me who consumes all these offerings, you will all die.

9. Daniel dijo al rey: «Que se haga como has dicho.» Los sacerdotes de Bel eran setenta, sin contar las mujeres y los niños

9. But if you can show that Bel consumes them, it is Daniel who will die for blaspheming." Daniel said to the king, "Let it be as you say."

10. El rey se dirigió, pues, con Daniel al templo de Bel

10. There were seventy priests of Bel, besides their wives and children. Together with Daniel, the king went to Bel's temple.

11. y los sacerdotes de Bel le dijeron: «Nosotros vamos a salir de aquí; tú, rey, manda poner la comida y el vino preparado; luego cierra la puerta y séllala con tu anillo; si mañana por la mañana, cuando vuelvas, encuentras que Bel no se lo ha comido todo, moriremos; en caso contrario, morirá Daniel, que nos ha calumniado.

11. The priests said to the king, "See, we are going outside. We will leave you here inside, O king, to set out the food and prepare the wine. Then you can leave them, shut the door and seal it with your ring.

12. Ellos estaban tranquilos, porque se habían hecho una entrada secreta debajo de la mesa y por ahí penetraban siempre y venían a comerse las ofrendas.

12. You will return in the morning, and if you find that Bel has not eaten the food and drunk the wine, we are ready to be executed. But if the reverse happens, Daniel must die for telling lies and slandering us."

13. En cuanto salieron y el rey mandó poner la comida ante Bel,

13. They were confident for they had made a secret entrance under the table, through which they used to come in to consume the food and wine offerings.

14. Daniel mandó a sus criados que trajeran ceniza y la desparramaran por todo el suelo del templo, sin más testigos que el rey. Luego salieron, cerraron la puerta, la sellaron con el anillo real y se fueron.

14. When the priests had left, the king set the food before Bel, while Daniel ordered his servants to scatter ashes all over the temple floor. Then they left after shutting the door and sealing it with the king's ring.

15. Los sacerdotes vinieron por la noche, como de costumbre, con sus mujeres y sus hijos, y se lo comieron y bebieron todo

15. That night the priests and their wives and children came and, as usual, ate and drank the offerings.

16. El rey se levantó muy temprano y Daniel también.

16. Early the next morning, the king returned to the temple with Daniel.

17. El rey preguntó a Daniel: «¿Están intactos los sellos?» «Intactos», respondió él.

17. "Are the seals unbroken, Daniel?" the king asked. Daniel answered, "They are unbroken, O king."

18. En cuanto abrieron la puerta, el rey echó una mirada a la mesa y gritó en alta voz: «¡Grande eres, Bel, y en ti no hay engaño!»

18. Opening the door, the king looked at the table, then exclaimed, "You are indeed great, O Bel. There is no deception in you."

19. Daniel se puso a reír y, deteniendo al rey para que no pasara más adentro, le dijo: «Mira, mira el pavimento y observa de quién son esas pisadas.»

19. Daniel laughed, and restraining the king from entering, he said, "But look at the floor and see whose footprints these are."

20. Veo huellas de hombres, de mujeres y de niños», dijo el rey

20. The king said, "I see footprints of men, women and children."

21. Se enojó muchísimo y mandó detener a los sacerdotes con sus mujeres y sus hijos. Ellos le mostraron entonces las puertas secretas por las que entraban a apoderarse de lo que había en la mesa.

21. Enraged, the king ordered the priests and their wives and children to be seized. They were compelled to show him the secret door through which they used to enter to consume the offerings on the table.

22. Entonces el rey mandó matarlos a todos y entregó Bel a Daniel, que lo destruyó juntamente con su templo.

22. They were put to death on orders of the king. And Bel was handed over to Daniel, who destroyed the idol and its temple.

23. Había también un gran dragón que los habitantes veneraban.

23. In Babylon there was a big dragon which was also worshiped.

24. Y dijo el rey a Daniel: «Al menos de éste no dirás que es de bronce; mira, está vivo y come y bebe; no negarás que es un dios viviente.

24. "Look," said the king to Daniel, "this is alive, not made of bronze. Would you deny that this is a living god? Worship it."

25. Adóralo, pues.» Respondió Daniel: «Yo adoro al Señor, mi Dios, porque él es un Dios vivo. Dame autorización y yo mataré a este dragón sin espada ni palo.»

25. Daniel replied, "I will worship no one but the Lord my God, for he alone is the living God.

26. El rey le dijo: «Puedes hacerlo.»

26. With your permission, O king, I will slay this dragon without sword or club." The king answered, "You have my permission."

26. Entonces Daniel tomó resina, grasa y pelos y lo coció junto, hizo unas bolas y las metió en el hocico de la serpiente, que reventó en cuanto las tragó. Y Daniel dijo: «Esto es lo que ustedes adoraban.

26. Then Daniel took some pitch, fat and hair, and boiled them together. He made them into cakes which he fed to the Dragon. And the Dragon burst after eating them.

27. Al enterarse los babilonios de esto, se indignaron y se amotinaron contra el rey, diciendo: «El rey se ha hecho judío, destruyó a Bel, mató a la serpiente, y suprimió a los sacerdotes.»

27. Daniel said to the king, "Now look at what happened to the thing you worship.

28. Se presentaron luego al rey y le dijeron: «Entréganos a Daniel; si no, te mataremos a ti y a todos los tuyos.

28. The Babylonians became angry upon hearing of this. "Our king has become a Jew," they said. "He destroyed Bel, killed the Dragon and put the priests to death."

29. Entonces el rey, al verse en peligro por su violencia, se vio obligado a entregarles a Daniel.

29. They went to the king and said, "Hand Daniel over to us or we will kill you and your family!"

30. Ellos lo echaron en el foso de los leones, donde estuvo seis días.

30. The king was forced to hand Daniel over to the people.

31. En ese foso había siete leones a los que daban diariamente dos cuerpos humanos y dos ovejas; pero entonces no les dieron nada con el fin de que devoraran a Daniel

31. Daniel was thrown into the lions' den, where he stayed for six days.

32. Vivía en ese tiempo en Judea el profeta Habacuq; éste acababa de preparar un guiso y de picar pan en un plato, y se dirigía al campo para llevárselo a los segadores.

32. In the den were seven lions which were fed daily with two human bodies and two sheep. This food was withheld from them, to make sure that they would devour Daniel.

33. Pero el ángel del Señor dijo a Habacuq: «Lleva la comida que preparaste a Babilonia, para Daniel, que está en el foso de los leones.

33. Now in Judea was a prophet named Habakkuk. He had put some bread and stew in a basket, and was about to take them to the reapers in the field

34. Habacuq dijo: «Señor, jamás he visto Babilonia y no sé dónde está el foso.»

34. when an angel of the lord appeared and said to him, "Take that lunch to Daniel in the lion's den at Babylon."

35. Pero el ángel del Señor lo tomó por la cabeza y llevándolo de los cabellos lo puso en Babilonia, junto al foso, con la rapidez de un espíritu.

35. Habakkuk said, "Sir, I have never been to Babylon nor have I seen the lions' den."

36. Habacuq gritó: «Daniel, Daniel, toma la comida que te manda Dios.»

36. The angel then took him by the crown of his head, carried him by his hair, and soon they were alighting above the lion's den in Babylon.

37. Daniel exclamó: «Oh Dios, te acordaste de mí y no has desamparado a los que te aman.»

37. "Daniel, Daniel," cried, Habakkuk, "take this lunch God has sent you."

38. Luego se levantó y se puso a comer, mientras el ángel del Señor llevaba a Habacuq al lugar en que estaba primero.

38. Daniel gave thanks to God, saying, "You have remembered me, O God, and have not forsaken those who love you."

39. El séptimo día vino el rey a llorar a Daniel; se acercó al foso, miró y vio a Daniel sentado allí.

39. Daniel ate, and the Lord's angel returned Habakkuk to his own place.

40. Entonces gritó con entusiasmo: «Grande eres tú, Señor, Dios de Daniel, y no hay otro Dios fuera de ti.»

40. On the seventh day, the king came to the lions' den to mourn for Daniel. He looked inside and saw Daniel sitting there.

41. Y mandó sacar del foso a Daniel, y arrojar allí a los que buscaban su muerte, que en su presencia fueron devorados al instante.

41. The king cried aloud, "How great you are, O Lord God of Daniel! Surely there is no other God but you!"

42.

42. He took Daniel out and threw into the den those who tried to destroy him. They were at once devoured before his eyes.
