Daniel, 1

1. En el tercer año del reinado de Joaquín, rey de Judá, vino Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, subió contra Jerusalén y la sitió.

1. In the third year of Jehoiakim's reign as king of Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon besieged Jerusalem.

2. El Señor entregó en sus manos a Joaquín y gran parte de los vasos del templo de Dios y los trasladó a tierra de Senaar a la casa de sus dioses y los puso en el tesoro de sus dioses.

2. The Lord delivered into his hands King Jehoiakim of Judah, and some of the vessels from the temple of God as well. These he carried off to the land of Shinar and placed in the treasure house of his god.

3. El rey dijo a Asfenaz, jefe de su personal, que trajera algunos israelitas de la descendencia de los reyes y de los nobles.

3. King Nebuchadnezzar ordered his chief eunuch Ashpenaz to bring in some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility:

4. Estos debían ser sin ningún defecto; debían tener buena presencia y ser de buen juicio, bien instruidos y bien educados. Permanecerían en el palacio del rey, donde se les enseñaría la lengua y la escritura de los caldeos.

4. young men without physical defect, handsome, intelligent and wise, well-informed, quick to learn and understand, and suitable for service in the king's palace. They were to be taught the language and literature of the Chaldeans.

5. El rey dispuso que todos los días se les diera comida de la preparada para la gente del palacio y vino del que ellos bebían. Después que fueran mantenidos por espacio de tres años, servirían en la presencia del rey.

5. They were allotted a daily portion of food and wine from the king's table and were to be trained for three years, after which they were to enter the king's service.

6. Entre ellos estaban estos judíos: Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías.

6. Among these were young men of Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

7. El jefe de los funcionarios les puso los nombres siguientes: a Daniel el de Beltsasar; a Ananías el de Sidrac; a Misael el de Sisac y a Azarías el de Abdénago. Cómo Daniel se negó a comer alimentos impuros

7. whose names the chief eunuch changed - Daniel to Belteshazzar, Hananiah to Shadrach, Mishael to Meshach, and Azariah to Abednego.

8. A los del palacio se les servían alimentos y bebidas que Daniel no quería tomar, por estar prohibidos por su ley. Pidió entonces permiso al jefe de los funcionarios del palacio para no comer estas cosas, que lo habrían manchado.

8. As Daniel was resolved not to make himself unclean with the king's food or wine, he begged the chief eunuch to spare him this defilement.

9. Dios hizo que Daniel lograra la simpatía de su jefe.

9. By the grace of God, the chief eunuch had been sympathetic to Daniel,

10. Sin embargo, éste respondió: «Ya que el rey, mi señor, fijó personalmente lo que deben comer y beber, temo que me eche la culpa y me castigue, si al llegar los encuentra más delgados que los jóvenes de su edad.»

10. but he was afraid of the king, and so he said, "If the king, who has allotted your food and drink, sees that you look more emaciated than the other young men of your age, he might think ill of me. It will put my life in danger to give in to your wish."

11. Daniel dijo entonces al sirviente designado para su cuidado:

11. Daniel then turned to the steward whom the chief eunuch had put in charge of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

12. «Te ruego que nos pongas diez días a prueba. Nos darás de comer legumbres y agua como bebida.

12. "Please test your servants for ten days. Give us only vegetables to eat and water to drink,

13. Después podrás observar si los jóvenes que comen de la mesa del rey tienen mejor aspecto que nosotros. Entonces harás lo que te parezca.»

13. and see how we look in comparison with the young men who eat food from the king's table. Then treat us in accordance with what you see."

14. El sirviente aceptó y los puso a prueba durante diez días.

14. The steward agreed and tested them for ten days,

15. Cumplido el plazo, vio que tenían mejor aspecto que todos los jóvenes que comían los alimentos del palacio.

15. at the end of which they looked healthier and better fed than any of the young men who ate the king's food.

16. Desde entonces, el sirviente retiraba la comida y el vino y les daba legumbres y agua.

16. So the steward continued to give them vegetables instead of the choice food and wine.

17. A estos cuatro jóvenes, Dios les concedió sabiduría e inteligencia, tanto para las letras como para la filosofía. Lo que es Daniel, sabía explicar sueños y visiones.

17. To these four youths God gave wisdom and proficiency in literature, and to Daniel the gift of interpreting visions and dreams.

18. Cumplido el plazo fijado por el rey para que le presentaran los jóvenes, el mayordomo los llevó ante Nabucodonosor.

18. At the end of the period set by the king for the youths' training, the chief eunuch presented them to Nebuchadnezzar.

19. El rey conversó con ellos, y entre ellos no se encontró ningún otro como Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías. Por eso, quedaron al servicio del rey.

19. The king talked with them and found none to equal Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. These four became members of the king's court.

20. En cuantas cosas de sabiduría o de inteligencia les consultó el rey, los encontró diez veces superiores a todos los magos y adivinos que había en todo su reino.

20. In any matter of wisdom and discernment about which the king consulted, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.

21. Daniel se quedó allí hasta el año primero del rey Ciro.

21. Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.
