Daniel, 5

1. El rey Belsasar invitó a un gran banquete a sus dignatarios. Se juntaron como mil personas y, en presencia de ellos, el rey tomó hasta emborracharse.

1. King Belshazzar gave a great banquet for his nobles, a thousand of them attended and he drank wine with them.

2. Animado por el vino, mandó que le trajeran los vasos de oro y plata que su padre, Nabucodonosor, había robado del Templo; es decir, de la Casa de Dios en Jerusalén, para que bebieran en ellos.

2. Under the influence of wine, he ordered that the gold and silver vessels his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem be brought in so that he and his nobles, his wives and concubines might drink from them.

3. Se los trajeron entonces y bebieron en ellos el rey y sus dignatarios, sus mujeres y sus concubinas.

3. The gold and silver vessels taken from God's temple were brought in, and the king and his nobles, his wives and concubines drank from them.

4. Tomaron vino y brindaron a sus dioses de oro y de plata, de bronce y de hierro, de madera y de piedra.

4. While they drank wine, they praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze and iron, of wood and stone.

5. De repente aparecieron dedos de una mano que escribía en el estuco de la pared del palacio, detrás del candelabro. El rey al verla se turbó.

5. Suddenly a man's fingers appeared opposite the lampstand and wrote on the plastered wall of the king's palace. Watching the hand as it wrote, the king turned pale.

6. Sus piernas se debilitaron y sus rodillas se pusieron a temblar.

6. So terrified was he that his knees knocked and his legs gave way.

7. Gritando, mandó llamar a los brujos y adivinos y les dijo: «Al que entienda esta letra y me la explique, lo haré vestir de rojo, color reservado para el rey, y le pondré al cuello un collar de oro y gobernará la tercera parte del reino.

7. He shouted, calling for his enchanters and Chaldean diviners. "Whoever reads this writing and tells me its meaning," said he to the wise men of Babylon, "will be clothed in purple, wear a gold chain around his neck, and be made the third highest ruler in my kingdom."

8. Todos los sabios del rey se acercaron, pero no pudieron leer esta escritura ni darle interpretación.

8. All the king's wise men came, but none could read the writing or tell its meaning.

9. Entonces el rey se turbó y sus dignatarios quedaron desconcertados

9. King Belshazzar became very frightened and his face grew even more pale. His nobles were likewise terrified and confused.

10. El rey y sus nobles hicieron tanta bulla que la reina lo supo. Entró, pues, a la sala del banquete y dijo: «Viva el rey para siempre. Que tus pensamientos no te turben ni cambie tu semblante de color.

10. Hearing the troubled voices of the king and his nobles, the queen entered the banquet hall and said, "Live forever, O king! Do not be alarmed and become pale.

11. En tu reino hay un hombre en quien reside el espíritu de los dioses santos. Ya en tiempos de tu padre se comprobó que tenía intuición, inteligencia y una sabiduría semejante a la de los dioses; por eso tu padre, el rey Nabucodonosor, lo nombró jefe de los magos, adivinos y astrólogos, poniéndole por sobrenombre Beltsasar

11. In your kingdom is a man who has the spirit of the holy gods. He was found to have discernment and god-like wisdom during your father's lifetime. He was in fact appointed chief of the magicians, enchanters and diviners by your father King Nebuchadnezzar.

12. Puesto que este Daniel tiene un espíritu extraordinario, ciencia, inteligencia y arte de interpretar los sueños, de descifrar enigmas y de resolver dificultades, que se llame a Daniel y él explicará este prodigio.

12. This man Daniel, whom the king called Beltheshazzar, knew how to interpret dreams, explain riddles and solve difficult problems. Call for Daniel and he will tell you what the writing means."

13. En seguida fue introducido Daniel a la presencia del rey. Este le dijo: «¿Eres tú Daniel, uno de los judíos desterrados que el rey, mi padre, trajo de Judá?

13. Daniel was brought in and questioned by the king, "Are you Daniel, one of the exiles my father brought from Judah?

14. He oído decir que en ti reside el espíritu de los dioses y que hay en ti luz, inteligencia y sabiduría extraordinarias.

14. I have heard that you have the spirit of the gods, that you have insight and extraordinary wisdom.

15. Trajeron a mi presencia a los sabios y magos para que leyeran este escrito y me dieran su explicación, pero no han sido capaces de descubrirle el sentido.

15. Wise men and enchanters were brought here, but none of them could read this writing and tell its meaning.

16. He oído decir que tú puedes dar interpretaciones y resolver dificultades. Por eso, si logras leer este escrito y decirme su interpretación, serás vestido de púrpura, llevarás al cuello el collar de oro y gobernarás la tercera parte del reino.

16. I have heard that you can interpret dreams and solve problems. If you can read this writing and tell me what it means, you will be clothed in purple, wear a gold chain around your neck, and be appointed third in rank in my kingdom."

17. Daniel dijo al rey: «Quédate con tus regalos y da tus obsequios a otro. Leeré este escrito y también te daré a conocer su significado

17. Daniel replied, "You may keep your gifts or give them to someone else. Just the same I will read and interpret the writing for you.

18. ¡Oh rey!, el Dios Altísimo dio a tu padre, Nabucodonosor, reino, grandeza, gloria y majestad.

18. God the Most High gave your father Nebuchadnezzar sovereignty and a great kingdom.

19. Por esta grandeza que le dio, todos los pueblos de distintos idiomas temblaban de miedo en su presencia. Hacía desaparecer o dejaba con vida a quien se le antojaba, daba poder o se lo quitaba a quien quería.

19. Because of the greatness given him by God, he was feared by nations and peoples of every language. He had the power of life and death over everyone. He exalted or humbled whomsoever he wished.

20. Pero se puso soberbio, porfiado y arrogante; entonces fue derrocado de su trono y le fue quitada su gloria.

20. But when he became arrogant and insolent, he was deposed and stripped of his glory.

21. Fue expulsado de la sociedad, pues se comportaba como un bruto, y estuvo entre las fieras del campo. Comía hierba como los bueyes, vivía a la intemperie como los rebaños hasta que reconoció que el Dios Altísimo tiene en su mano los tronos de los hombres y coloca en ellos a quien quiere

21. He became an outcast and as senseless as a beast. He lived with wild asses, ate grass like cattle and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that God the Most High rules over the kingdom of men and appoints whom he pleases to govern it.

22. Pero tú, Belsasar, hijo suyo, tampoco has conservado humilde tu corazón, a pesar de que sabías todo esto.

22. But you his son Belshazzar, although you knew all this, have not humbled yourself.

23. Más aún, te has levantado contra el Señor del Cielo, has mandado traer los vasos de su Templo, y con tus invitados has bebido vino en ellos. Has brindado a todos tus dioses de metal y de madera y de piedra, que no ven, ni oyen, ni entienden, pero no has glorificado al Dios de quien dependen tu vida y tu porvenir.

23. You have defied the Lord of heaven. You had the vessels from his temple brought to you, and together with your nobles, your wives and concubines, you drank wine from them. You praised the idols made of silver and gold, of bronze, iron and stones, which neither see, nor hear, nor understand; but you never glorified God who has power over your life and all your fortunes.

24. Fue él quien te mandó la mano que escribió esas palabras

24. So he sent the hand that wrote the inscription

25. Estas son las palabras escritas: «Mene, Tequel y Parsin.»

25. which read MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN. And these words mean:

26. Y éste es su significado: Mene (o sea, medido), Dios ha medido tu reino y le ha puesto fin;

26. MENE, God has numbered the days of your reign and put an end to it;

27. Tequel (o sea, pesado), has sido pesado en la balanza y falta peso;

27. TEKEL, you have been weighed on the scales and found wanting;

28. Parsin (o sea, partido), tu reino ha sido dividido y entregado a los medos y a los persas.

28. PARSIN, your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and the Persians."

29. Entonces Belsasar ordenó que le pusieran un vestido rojo, color reservado para el rey, y un collar de oro, e hizo proclamar que le asignaba el tercer puesto en el reino

29. On Belshazzar's order, Daniel was clothed in purple, given a gold chain to wear around his neck, and proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.

30. Pero aquella misma noche Belsasar, rey de los caldeos, fue asesinado.

30. That very night, however, the Chaldean king Belshazzar was slain.
