Daniel, 13

1. Vivía en Babilonia un hombre llamado Joaquín.

1. There lived in Babylon a man named Joakim,

2. Se había casado con una mujer llamada Susana, hija de Jilquías, muy bella y temerosa de Dios;

2. who was married to a very beautiful God-fearing woman, Susanna, Hilkiah's daughter,

3. sus padres eran justos y habían educado a su hija según la Ley de Moisés. Joaquín era muy rico.

3. whose pious parents had trained her in the law of Moses.

4. Tenía un jardín junto a su casa, y los judíos acudían donde él porque gozaba de gran estima entre todos.

4. A very rich man and greatly respected by his countrymen, Joakim was frequently visited by the Jews in his house adjoining a garden.

5. Aquel año habían sido nombrados jueces dos ancianos escogidos entre el pueblo. En ellos se verificó lo que dijo el Señor: «La corrupción ha salido de Babilonia, de los ancianos que hacían de jueces y que parecían guiar al pueblo».

5. That year, two elders of the people were appointed judges, in whom this word of the Lord became true, "Wickedness has come forth from Babylon, through the elders appointed judges, who were supposed to govern the people."

6. Estos dos ancianos venían a menudo a casa de Joaquín, y todos los que tenían algún pleito se dirigían a ellos.

6. These men frequented Joakim's house, and all who had legal disputes used to come to them.

7. Cuando a mediodía ya todo el mundo se había retirado, Susana iba a pasear por el jardín de su marido.

7. After the people had left at noon, Susanna would go into her husband's garden for a walk.

8. Los dos ancianos, que la veían ir a pasear todos los días, empezaron a desearla.

8. The two old men began to lust for her as they watched her enter the garden every day.

9. Perdieron la cabeza, dejando de mirar al Cielo y olvidando sus justos juicios

9. Forgetting the demands of justice and virtue, their lust grew all the more as they made no effort to turn their eyes to heaven.

10. Los dos estaban apasionados de ella, pero sin manifestarse el uno al otro su pasión

10. Although both were possessed of the same passion for her, they concealed that from each other,

11. porque tenían vergüenza de descubrir el deseo que tenían de pecar con ella

11. for they were ashamed to reveal their lustful desire.

12. y trataban afanosamente de verla todos los días.

12. But they continued watching her day after day.

13. Un día, después de decirse mutuamente: «Vamos a casa, porque es hora de comer», salieron y se fueron cada uno por su lado.

13. One day before lunch, they parted, saying to each other, "Let us go home for it is meal time. So off they went in different directions.

14. Pero ambos volvieron sobre sus pasos y se encontraron de nuevo en el mismo sitio. Entonces se preguntaron el uno al otro el motivo, se confesaron su pasión y decidieron buscar el momento en que pudieran sorprender a Susana a solas

14. but both turned back, and coming face to face again, each was obliged to explain his action and admit his lust. They agreed to wait for an opportunity to meet her alone.

15. Mientras estaban esperando la ocasión favorable, Susana entró un día en el jardín, como los días anteriores, acompañada solamente de las sirvientas jóvenes, y como hacía calor, quiso bañarse en el jardín.

15. One day, as they were waiting for an opportune time, Susanna entered the garden as usual with only two maids. She decided to bathe, for it was a hot day.

16. Allí no había nadie excepto los dos ancianos que estaban espiando escondidos.

16. Nobody else was there ex-cept the two elders watching her from where they had hidden themselves.

17. Susana dijo a sus criadas: «Tráiganme jabón y perfume y cierren las puertas del jardín para poder bañarme.»

17. She said to the maids, "Bring me oil and ointments, and shut the garden doors while I bathe."

18. Ellas obedecieron, cerraron las puertas del jardín y salieron por la puerta lateral para traer lo que Susana había pedido. No sabían que los ancianos estaban escondidos

18. Unaware of the elders hidden inside the garden, the two maids did as ordered, shutting the doors and leaving by the side entrance to the house to fetch what she had asked for.

19. En cuanto salieron las sirvientas, los dos ancianos se levantaron y fueron corriendo donde ella.

19. When the maids had left, the two elders hurried to her and said,

20. Y le dijeron: «Las puertas del jardín están cerradas y nadie nos ve. Nosotros estamos llenos de pasión por ti; consiente y entrégate a nosotros.

20. "Look, the garden doors are shut and no one sees us. We desire to possess you.

21. Si no lo haces, juraremos que un joven estaba contigo y que por eso habías despedido a tus criadas.

21. If you refuse to give in, we will testify that you sent your maids away for there was a young man here with you."

22. Susana exclamó gimiendo: «Me encuentro sitiada por todos lados. Si consiento, es como morir; si no consiento, no me libraré de las manos de ustedes.

22. Susanna moaned, "Whatever I do, I am trapped. If I give in to your desire, it will be death for me; if I refuse, I won't escape your persecution.

23. Pero prefiero caer en manos de ustedes sin pecar, antes que pecar delante del Señor.

23. I would rather be persecuted than sin in the eyes of the Lord."

24. Y Susana se puso a gritar muy fuertemente. Los dos ancianos gritaron también contra ella,

24. Susanna shrieked, but the old men shouted, putting the blame on her.

25. y uno de ellos corrió a abrir las puertas del jardín.

25. One of them ran and opened the garden doors.

26. Al oír estos gritos en el jardín, las gentes de la casa se precipitaron por la puerta lateral para ver qué pasaba.

26. Hearing the noise in the garden, the household servants rushed in by the side entrance to see what was happening.

27. Y cuando los ancianos contaron su historia, los sirvientes se sintieron muy avergonzados, porque jamás se había dicho de Susana cosa semejante

27. They were taken aback when they heard the elders' accusation, for never had anything like this been said of Susanna.

28. A la mañana siguiente, cuando el pueblo se reunió en casa de Joaquín, su marido, llegaron allá los dos ancianos, llenos de pensamientos perversos contra Susana, para hacerla condenar a muerte.

28. The next day a meeting was held at Joakim's house. The two elders arrived, vindictively determined to have Susanna sentenced to death.

29. Y dijeron en presencia del pueblo: «Manden a buscar a Susana, hija de Jilquías, la esposa de Joaquín.»

29. They ordered before all the people, "Send for Susanna, Hilkiah's daughter and Joakim's wife."

30. La mandaron a buscar. Y ella compareció acompañada de sus padres, de sus hijos y de todos sus parientes.

30. They sent for her, and she came with her parents, children and all her relatives.

31. Susana era muy fina y de gran belleza.

31. Susanna was a very refined and beautiful woman.

32. Tenía puesto el velo, pero aquellos miserables ordenaron quitárselo para saciarse de su hermosura.

32. She had her veil on, but the wicked elders ordered her to uncover her face for them to feast on her beauty.

33. Todos los suyos lloraban, y también todos los que la veían

33. Her family and friends and all who saw her wept.

34. Los dos ancianos, levantándose en medio del pueblo, pusieron las manos sobre la cabeza de Susana.

34. The two elders stood up and laid their hands upon her head.

35. Ella levantó llorando los ojos al cielo, porque su corazón tenía puesta su confianza en el Señor

35. Completely trusting in the Lord, she raised her tearful eyes to heaven.

36. Los ancianos dijeron: «Mientras nosotros paseábamos solos por el jardín, entró ésta con dos criadas. Cerró las puertas y despidió a las criadas.

36. The elders started making their accusation, "We were taking a walk in the garden when this woman came in with two maids. She ordered them to shut the garden doors and dismissed them.

37. Entonces se le acercó un joven que estaba escondido y pecó con ella.

37. Then a young man came out of hiding and lay with her.

38. Nosotros, que estábamos en un rincón del jardín, al ver esta maldad, fuimos corriendo hacia ellos.

38. We were in a corner of the garden, and we saw this crime from there. We ran to them,

39. Los pillamos juntos, pero a él no lo pudimos atrapar porque era más forzudo que nosotros y, abriendo la puerta, se escapó.

39. and caught them in the act of embracing. We were unable to take hold of the man. He was too strong for us. He made a dash for the door, opened it and ran off.

40. Entonces la apresamos y le preguntamos quién era ese joven

40. But we were able to seize this woman. We asked her who the young man was,

41. y no quiso decirlo. Somos testigos de todo esto. LLa asamblea los creyó, ya que eran ancianos y jueces del pueblo, y la condenaron a muerte.

41. but she refused to tell us. This is our statement, and we testify to its truth." The assembly took their word, since they were elders and judges of the people. Susanna was condemned to death.

42. Entonces Susana exclamó con voz fuerte: «Oh Dios eterno, que conoces los secretos, que todo lo sabes antes que suceda,

42. She cried aloud, "Eternal God, nothing is hidden from you; you know all things before they come to be.

43. tú sabes que éstos me han levantado un falso testimonio. Mira que voy a morir sin haber hecho nada de lo que su maldad ha planeado contra mí.

43. You know that these men have testified falsely against me. Would you let me die, though I am not guilty of all their malicious charges?"

44. El Señor escuchó su voz y cuando la llevaban a la muerte,

44. The Lord heard her,

45. Dios despertó el santo espíritu de un jovencito llamado Daniel,

45. and as she was being led to her execution, God aroused the holy spirit residing in a young lad named Daniel.

46. que se puso a gritar: «Yo soy inocente de la muerte de ésta.»

46. He shouted, "I will have no part in the death of this woman!"

47. Todo el pueblo se volvió a él y le dijo: «¿Qué significa todo eso que has dicho?

47. Those present turned to him, "What did you say?" they all asked.

48. El, de pie en medio de ellos, respondió: «¿Tan torpes son, hijos de Israel, que condenan sin averiguación y sin evidencia a una hija de nuestro pueblo?

48. Standing in their midst, he said to them, "Have you become fools, you Israelites, to condemn a daughter of Israel without due process and in the absence of clear evidence?

49. Vuelvan al tribunal, porque el testimonio que éstos han levantado contra ella es falso.

49. Return to court, for those men have testified falsely against her."

50. Todo el pueblo se apuró en volver allá y los ancianos dijeron a Daniel: «Ven a sentarte con nosotros y dinos lo que piensas, ya que Dios te ha dado la sabiduría de los ancianos.

50. Hurriedly they returned, and the elders said to Daniel, "Come and sit with us, for you also possess the gifts bestowed by God upon the elders."

51. Daniel les dijo entonces: «Sepárenlos lejos a uno del otro y yo los interrogaré.»

51. Daniel said to the people, "Separate these two from one another and I will examine each of them."

52. Una vez que los separaron, Daniel llamó a uno de ellos y le dijo: «Envejecido en la maldad, ahora vas a pagar los crímenes de tu vida pasada.

52. When the two elders were separated from each other, Daniel called one of them and said, "How wicked you have grown with age. Your sins of earlier days have piled up against you, and now is the time of reckoning.

53. Tú dictabas sentencias injustas, condenabas a los inocentes y absolvías a los culpables, cuando el Señor ha dicho: «No harás morir al inocente justo».

53. Remember how you have passed unjust sentences, condemning the innocent and freeing the guilty, although the Lord has said 'The innocent and the just should not be put to death.'

54. Así, pues, si tú lo has visto, dinos debajo de qué árbol los viste entretenerse juntos.» Respondió él: «Bajo una acacia.

54. Now, if you really witnessed the crime, under what tree did you see them do it?"

55. Y Daniel contestó: «Verdaderamente te has condenado con esta mentira, pues ya el ángel de Dios ha recibido de él la sentencia y viene a partirte por medio.

55. The elder answered, "Under a mastic tree." Daniel said, "Your lie will cost you your head. You will be cut in two, as soon as the Lord's angel receives your sentence from God."

56. Después que despidió a éste, Daniel mandó traer al otro y le dijo: «Raza de Canaán, no de Judá; la hermosura te ha hechizado y la pasión corrompió tu corazón.

56. Putting the first one aside, Daniel called the other elder and said to him, "You offspring of Canaan and not of Judah, you have long allowed yourself to be perverted by lust.

57. Así trataban a las mujeres de Israel, y ellas por miedo condescendían con ustedes. Pero una hija de Judá no soportó la maldad de ustedes.

57. This is how you have dealt with the daughters of Israel, who out of fear have yielded to you. But here is a daughter of Judah who would not tolerate your wickedness.

58. Dime ahora debajo de qué árbol los sorprendiste juntos» El respondió: «Bajo una encina.

58. Tell me then, under what tree did you catch them committing the crime?" The answer came, "Under an oak."

59. Dijo Daniel: «Tú también has mentido, para mal tuyo: el ángel del Señor ya está esperando, espada en mano, para partirte por el medio y acabar con ustedes.

59. "Your lie has also cost you your head," Daniel said. "God's angel waits to cut you both in two."

60. Entonces toda la asamblea exclamó en alta voz bendiciendo a Dios, que salva a los que esperan en él.

60. The whole assembly shouted and blessed God for helping those who hope in him.

61. Luego se levantaron contra los dos ancianos que Daniel convenció de falso testimonio por sus propias declaraciones,

61. They turned against the two elders who, through Daniel's efforts, had been convicted by their own mouths. In accordance with Moses' law, the penalty the two elders had intended to impose upon their neighbor was inflicted upon them.

62. les dieron muerte para cumplir la ley de Moisés y ese día se salvó una vida inocente

62. They were sentenced to death. Thus was the life of an innocent woman spared that day.

63. Jilquías y su esposa dieron gracias a Dios por su hija Susana, lo mismo que su marido y todos sus parientes, por el hecho de que nada indigno se había hallado en ella.

63. Hilkiah and his wife praised God for the justice given Susanna, and so did Joakim her husband and all her relatives, for she was not found guilty of any shameful deed.

64. Y desde aquel día en adelante, Daniel fue grande a los ojos del pueblo.

64. Daniel was greatly esteemed by the people from that day onward.
