I Macabeus, 4

1. Górgias tomou cinco mil homens de pé e mil cavaleiros escolhidos, partindo de noite,

1. Gorgias took with him five thousand foot and a thousand picked cavalry, and the force moved off by night

2. para atacar o acampamento dos Judeus e dar sobre eles de improviso. Os homens da guarnição da fortaleza (de Jerusalém) serviam-lhes de guia.

2. with the object of attacking the Jewish position and dealing them an unexpected blow; the men from the Citadel were there to guide him.

3. Judas, ao ter noticia disto, levantou-se com os seus valentes para ir atacar o exército do rei, que estava em Emaús,

3. Judas got wind of it and himself moved off with his fighters to strike at the royal army at Emmaus,

4. enquanto as tropas estavam ainda dispersas fora do acampamento.

4. while its fighting troops were still dispersed outside the camp.

5. Górgias foi de noite ao acampamento de Judas, mas não encontrou lá ninguém; então buscava-os pelos montes, dizendo: Eles fogem de nós.

5. Hence, when Gorgias reached Judas' camp, he found no one and began looking for the Jews in the mountains. 'For', he said, 'we have got them on the run.'

6. Quando foi dia, apareceu Judas na planície, acompanhado de três mil homens, que não tinham nem os escudos nem as espadas que desejavam. (ver nota)

6. First light found Judas in the plain with three thousand men, although these lacked the armour and swords they would have wished.

7. Vira que o acampamento dos gentios era poderoso, fortificado, com cavalaria em torno, e que todos eram destros para a guerra.

7. They could now see the gentile encampment with its strong fortifications and cavalry surrounding it, clearly people who understood warfare.

8. Então disse Judas aos homens que estavam com ele: Não temais a sua multidão, nem temais o seu encontro.

8. Judas said to his men, 'Do not be afraid of their numbers, and do not flinch at their attack.

9. Lembrai-vos como nossos pais foram salvos no mar Vermelho, quando Faraó os perseguia com o seu exército.

9. Remember how our ancestors were delivered at the Red Sea when Pharaoh was pursuing them in force.

10. Gritemos agora ao céu, para que se compadeça de nós, se lembre da aliança que fez com nossos pais e desbarate hoje este exército diante de nossos olhos.

10. And now let us call on Heaven: if he cares for us, he will remember his covenant with our ancestors and will destroy this army confronting us today;

11. Todas as nações conhecerão que há um redentor e libertador de Israel.

11. then all the nations will know for certain that there is One who ransoms and saves Israel.'

12. Nisto os estrangeiros levantaram os olhos e viram que a gente (de Judas) ia marchando contra eles.

12. The foreigners looked up and, seeing the Jews advancing against them,

13. Saíram do seu acampamento para o combate, enquanto os que estavam com Judas davam sinal com as trombetas.

13. came out of the camp to join battle. Judas' men sounded the trumpet

14. Travou-se a batalha, em que foram derrotados os gentios e fugiram para a planície.

14. and engaged them. The gentiles were defeated and fled towards the plain

15. Os que ficaram atrás caíram todos à espada, (os vencedores) perseguiram-nos até Gezeron e até aos campos da Idumeia, de Azot e de Jamnia, sucumbindo deles perto de três mil homens.

15. and all the stragglers fell by the sword. The pursuit continued as far as Gezer and the plains of Idumaea, Azotus and Jamnia, and the enemy lost about three thousand men.

16. Então voltou Judas com o exército que o seguia, deixando de os perseguir,

16. Breaking off the pursuit, Judas returned with his men

17. e disse à sua gente: Não vos deixeis levar do desejo da presa, porque ainda temos inimigos com que pelejar;

17. and said to the people, 'Never mind the booty, for we have another battle ahead of us.

18. Górgias e o seu exército estão perto de nós no monte; conservai-vos agora firmes contra os nossos inimigos, acabai de os derrotar, e depois tomareis com segurança os seus despojos.

18. Gorgias and his troops are still near us in the mountains. First stand up to our enemies and fight them, and then you can safely collect the booty.'

19. Ainda Judas estava a falar, quando apareceu um grupo (de Górgias) olhando de cima do monte.

19. The words were hardly out of Judas' mouth, when a detachment came into view, peering down from the mountain.

20. (Os Sírios) viram que os seus tinham sido postos em fuga e que (os Judeus) tinham lançado fogo ao seu acampamento, porque o fumo que aparecia indicava o acontecido.

20. Observing that their own troops had been routed and that the camp had been fired -- since the smoke, which they could see, attested the fact-

21. A vista disto, tiveram muito medo, vendo ao mesmo tempo que o exército de Judas estava na planície preparado para a batalha.

21. they were panic-stricken at the sight; and when, furthermore, they saw Judas' troops drawn up for battle on the plain,

22. E fugiram todos para as terras dos estrangeiros.

22. they all fled into Philistine territory.

23. Então Judas voltou para recolher os despojos do acampamento (inimigo); levaram muito ouro e prata, jacinto, púrpura marinha e grandes riquezas.

23. Judas then turned back to plunder the camp, and a large sum in gold and silver, with violet and sea-purple stuffs, and many other valuables were carried off.

24. Ao voltarem, cantavam hinos e bem-diziam a Deus no céu, porque é bom, porque a sua misericórdia é eterna.

24. On their return, the Jews chanted praises to Heaven, singing, 'He is kind and his love is everlasting!'

25. Foi grande a vitória que alcançou Israel naquele dia.

25. That day had seen a remarkable deliverance in Israel.

26. Os estrangeiros que escaparam, foram levar a notícia a Lísias de tudo o que tinha acontecido.

26. Those of the foreigners who had escaped came and gave Lysias an account of all that had happened.

27. Tendo-o ele ouvido, ficou consternado e abatido, porque não lhe tinham saído as coisas como ele ideara contra Israel, e como o rei tinha ordenado.

27. The news shocked and dismayed him, for affairs in Israel had not gone as he intended, and the result was quite the opposite to what the king had ordered.

28. No ano seguinte juntou Lísias um exército de sessenta mil homens de pé, escolhidos, e de cinco mil cavaleiros, para combater os Judeus.

28. The next year he mobilised sixty thousand picked troops and five thousand cavalry with the intention of finishing off the Jews.

29. Marcharam para a Judeia e acamparam junto de Bethsur. Judas saiu-lhes ao encontro com dez mil homens.

29. They advanced into Idumaea and made their base at Beth-Zur, where Judas met them with ten thousand men.

30. A vista deste poderoso exército (inimigo) Judas fez oração, nestes termos: Bem-dito és, Salvador de Judas. Israel, que quebraste a força do gigante, por meio do teu servo Davide, e que entregaste o acampamento dos estrangeiros nas mãos de Jónotas, filho de Saul, e do seu escudeiro.

30. When he saw their military strength he offered this prayer, 'Blessed are you, Saviour of Israel, who shattered the mighty warrior's attack at the hand of your servant David, and delivered the Philistine camp into the hands of Jonathan son of Saul, and his armourbearer.

31. Entrega agora este exército (dos nossos inimigos) nas mãos do teu povo de Israel; fiquem eles confundidos com as suas tropas e com a sua cavalaria

31. Crush this expedition in the same way at the hands of your people Israel; let their troops and cavalry bring them nothing but shame.

32. Infunde-lhes terror, faze desfalecer a sua soberba ousadia Que com o seu mesmo quebrantamento sejam destruídos.

32. Sow panic in their ranks, confound the confidence they put in their numbers and send them reeling in defeat.

33. Derriba-os por meio da espada dos que te amam; que todos os que conhecem o teu nome, te dirijam hinos de louvor.

33. Overthrow them by the sword of those who love you, and all who acknowledge your name will sing your praises.'

34. Depois disco, deu-se a batalha. Caíram diante deles (Judeus), cinco mil homens do exército de Lísias.

34. The two forces engaged, and five thousand men of Lysias' troops fell in hand-to-hand fighting.

35. Vendo Lísias a fuga dos seus e a coragem dos Judeus, que estavam dispostos ou a viver ou a morrer valorosamente, foi para Antioquia e recrutou novos soldados, para tornar a ir à Judeia com forças maiores.

35. Seeing the rout of his army and the courage of Judas' troops and their readiness to live or die nobly, Lysias withdrew to Antioch, where he recruited mercenaries for a further invasion of Judaea in even greater strength.

36. Então Judas e seus irmãos disseram: Eis que estão nossos Inimigos derrotados; vamos agora purificar e consagrar de novo o santuário.

36. Judas and his brothers then said, 'Now that our enemies have been defeated, let us go up to purify the sanctuary and dedicate it.'

37. Logo se juntou todo o exército, e subiram ao monte Sião.

37. So they marshalled the whole army, and went up to Mount Zion.

38. Viram o santuário deserto, o altar profanado, as portas queimadas, nos átrios arbustos nascidos como num bosque ou nos montes, e os quartos (dos ministros) do templo destruídos.

38. There they found the sanctuary deserted, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt down, and vegetation growing in the courts as it might in a wood or on some mountain, while the storerooms were in ruins.

39. Rasgaram as suas vestes, fizeram grande pranto, puseram cinza sobre a cabeça,

39. They tore their garments and mourned bitterly, putting dust on their heads.

40. prostraram-se com o rosto por terra, e, ao som das trombetas, levantaram gritos ao céu.

40. They prostrated themselves on the ground, and when the trumpets gave the signal they cried aloud to Heaven.

41. Então ordenou Judas que fossem alguns homens combater contra os que estavam na fortaleza, enquanto se purificavam os lugares santos.

41. Judas then ordered his men to keep the Citadel garrison engaged until he had purified the sanctuary.

42. Escolheu sacerdotes sem mancha, cheios de zelo pela lei de Deus,

42. Next, he selected priests who were blameless and zealous for the Law

43. os quais purificaram os santos lugares e levaram para um sítio profano as pedras contaminadas (com os sacrifícios dos ídolos).

43. to purify the sanctuary and remove the stones of the 'Pollution' to some unclean place.

44. Deliberaram sobre o que se deveria fazer do altar dos holocaustos, que havia sido profanado.

44. They discussed what should be done about the altar of burnt offering which had been profaned,

45. Tomaram a feliz resolução de o destruir, a fim de que não viesse a ser-lhes um motivo de opróbrio, por causa de o terem contaminado os gentios. Assim demoliram-no

45. and very properly decided to pull it down, rather than later be embarrassed about it since it had been defiled by the gentiles. They therefore demolished it

46. e colocaram as suas pedras no monte do templo, num lugar próprio, esperando que algum profeta declarasse o que se devia fazer delas.

46. and deposited the stones in a suitable place on the hill of the Dwelling to await the appearance of a prophet who should give a ruling about them.

47. Tomaram pedras não trabalhadas, segunda a lei, e fizeram com elas um altar novo, conforme àquele que existira antes.

47. They took unhewn stones, as the Law prescribed, and built a new altar on the lines of the old one.

48. Restauraram o santuário e o interior da casa (do Senhor) e santificaram os átrios.

48. They restored the Holy Place and the interior of the Dwelling, and purified the courts.

49. Fizeram novos vasos sagrados, repuseram no templo o candelabro, o altar dos perfumes e a mesa.

49. They made new sacred vessels, and brought the lamp-stand, the altar of incense, and the table into the Temple.

50. Queimaram incenso sobre o altar acenderam as lâmpadas que estavam sobre o candelabro, para iluminar o templo,

50. They burned incense on the altar and lit the lamps on the lamp-stand, and these shone inside the Temple.

51. puseram os pães (da proposição) sobre a mesa e suspenderam os véus. Acabaram assim tudo o que tinham começado.

51. They placed the loaves on the table and hung the curtains and completed all the tasks they had undertaken.

52. No dia vinte e cinco do nono mês, chamado o mês de Casleu, do ano cento e quarenta e oito, levantaram-se de madrugada

52. On the twenty-fifth of the ninth month, Chislev, in the year 148 they rose at dawn

53. e ofereceram um sacrifício, conforme a lei, sobre o novo altar dos holocaustos que tinham construído.

53. and offered a lawful sacrifice on the new altar of burnt offering which they had made.

54. No mesmo tempo e no mesmo dia, em que os gentios o tinham profanado, foi ele novamente consagrado, ao som de cânticos, harpas, liras e címbalos.

54. The altar was dedicated, to the sound of hymns, zithers, lyres and cymbals, at the same time of year and on the same day on which the gentiles had originally profaned it.

55. Todo o povo se prostrou com o rosto por terra, adorando e levantando a sua voz até ao céu, para bem-dizer aquele que lhes tinha dado o feliz sucesso da sua empresa.

55. The whole people fell prostrate in adoration and then praised Heaven who had granted them success.

56. Celebraram a dedicação do altar, durante oito dias, ofereceram holocaustos, com alegria e sacrifícios de acção de graças e de louvor.

56. For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar, joyfully offering burnt offerings, communion and thanksgiving sacrifices.

57. Adornaram a fachada do templo com coroas de ouro e com pequenos escudos; repararam as entradas do templo e as câmaras, e puseram-lhes portas.

57. They ornamented the front of the Temple with crowns and bosses of gold, renovated the gates and storerooms, providing the latter with doors.

58. Foi extraordinária a alegria do povo, e o opróbrio das nações foi afastado.

58. There was no end to the rejoicing among the people, since the disgrace inflicted by the gentiles had been effaced.

59. Foi estabelecido por Judas e seus irmãos e toda a assembleia de Israel, que se celebrassem com alegria e regozijo os dias da dedicação do altar, a seu tempo, cada ano, durante oito dias, contados desde o dia vinte e cinco do mês de Casleu.

59. Judas, with his brothers and the whole assembly of Israel, made it a law that the days of the dedication of the altar should be celebrated yearly at the proper season, for eight days beginning on the twenty-fifth of the month of Chislev, with rejoicing and gladness.

60. Neste mesmo tempo cercaram o monte Sião de altos muros e fortes torres, temendo que os gentios tornassem a vir e o calcassem, como tinham feito antes,

60. They then proceeded to build high walls with strong towers round Mount Zion, to prevent the gentiles from coming and riding roughshod over it as in the past.

61. Pôs ali Judas uma guarnição para o guardar. Fortificou também Bethsur, para o proteger, a fim de o povo ter uma fortaleza nas fronteiras da Idumeia.

61. Judas stationed a garrison there to guard it; he also fortified Beth-Zur, so that the people would have a fortress confronting Idumaea.
