Genèse, 35

1. Dieu dit à Jacob : " Lève-toi, monte à Béthel et demeures-y, et dresse là un autel au Dieu qui t'est apparu quand tu fuyais devant Esaü,'ton frère."

1. God said to Jacob: "Go up now to Bethel. Settle there and build an altar there to the God who appeared to you while you were fleeing from your brother Esau."

2. Jacob dit à sa famille et à tous ceux qui étaient avec lui : " Citez les dieux étrangers qui sont au milieu de vous ; purifiez-vous et chan­gez de vêtements.

2. So Jacob told his family and all the others who were with him: "Get rid of the foreign gods that you have among you; then purify yourselves and put on fresh clothes.

3. Nous nous lèverons et nous monterons à Béthel, et là je dres­serai un autel au Dieu qui m'a exaucé au jour de mon angoisse, et qui a été avec moi, dans le voyage que j'ai fait. "

3. We are now to go up to Bethel, and I will build an altar there to the God who answered me in my hour of distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone."

4. Et ils donnèrent à Jacob tous les dieux étrangers qui étaient entre leurs mains et les boucles qu'ils avaient aux oreilles, et Jacob les enfouit sous le térébinthe qui est à Sichem.

4. They therefore handed over to Jacob all the foreign gods in their possession and also the rings they had in their ears.

5. Ils partirent, et la terreur de Dieu se répandit sur les villes d'alentour, et on ne poursuivit pas les fils de Jacob.

5. Then, as they set out, a terror from God fell upon the towns round about, so that no one pursued the sons of Jacob.

6. Jacob, avec tous les gens qui étaient avec lui; arriva à Luz, au pays de Chanaan c'est Béthel.

6. Thus Jacob and all the people who were with him arrived in Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.

7. Il y bâtit un autel, et il appela ce lieu El-Béthel, car c'est là que Dieu lui était apparu lorsqu'il fuyait de­vant son frère.

7. There he built an altar and named the place Bethel, for it was there that God had revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.

8. Alors mourut Débora, nourrice de Rebecca, et elle fut enterrée au-dessous de Béthel, au pied du chêne auquel on donna le nom de Chêne des pleurs.

8. Death came to Rebekah's nurse Deborah; she was buried under the oak below Bethel, and so it was called Allonbacuth.

9. Dieu apparut encore à Jacob, après son retour de Paddan-Aram, et il le bé­nit.

9. On Jacob's arrival from Paddan-aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him.

10. Dieu lui dit : " Ton nom est Jacob ; tu ne seras plus appelé Jacob, mais Is­raël sera ton nom. " Et il le nomma Israël.

10. God said to him: "You whose name is Jacob shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name." Thus he was named Israel.

11. Dieu lui dit : " Je suis le Dieu tout-­puissant. Sois fécond et multiplie; il naîtra de toi une nation et une assem­blée de nations, et de tes reins sortiront des rois.

11. God also said to him: "I am God Almighty; be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed an assembly of nations, shall stem from you, and kings shall issue from your loins.

12. Le pays que j'ai donné à Abra­ham et à Isaac, je te le donnerai, et je don­nerai ce pays à ta postérité après toi."

12. The land I once gave to Abraham and Isaac I now give to you; And to your descendants after you will I give this land."

13. Et Dieu remonta d'auprès de lui, dans le lieu où il lui avait parlé.

13. Then God departed from him.

14. Et dans le lieu où il lui avait parlé, Jacob dressa un monu­ment de pierre, sur lequel il fit une liba­tion et versa de l'huile.

14. On the site where God had spoken with him, Jacob set up a memorial stone, and upon it he made a libation and poured out oil.

15. Il donna le nom de Béthel au lieu où Dieu lui avait parlé.

15. Jacob named the site Bethel, because God had spoken with him there.

16. Ils partirent de Béthel. Il y avait en­core une certaine distance avant d'arri­ver à Ephrata, lorsque Rachel enfanta, et son accouchement fut pénible.

16. Then they departed from Bethel; but while they still had some distance to go on the way to Ephrath, Rachel began to be in labor and to suffer great distress.

17. Pen­dant les douleurs de l'enfantement, la sage-femme lui dit : " Ne crains point, car c'est encore un fils que tu vas avoir. "

17. When her pangs were most severe, her midwife said to her, "Have no fear! This time, too, you have a son."

18. Comme son âme s'en allait, - car elle était mourante, - elle le nomma Bénoni ; mais son père l'appela Benjamin.

18. With her last breath--for she was at the point of death-she called him Ben-oni; his father, however, named him Benjamin.

19. Ra­chel mourut, et elle fut enterrée au chemin d'Ephrata, qui est Bethléem.

19. Thus Rachel died; and she was buried on the road to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

20. Ja­cob éleva un monument sur sa tombe ; c'est le monument de la Tombe de Rachel, qui subsiste encore aujourd'hui.

20. Jacob set up a memorial stone on her grave, and the same monument marks Rachel's grave to this day.

21. Israël partit, et il dressa sa tente au delà de Migdal-Eder.

21. Israel moved on and pitched his tent beyond Migdal-eder.

22. Pendant qu'Israël demeurait dans cette contrée, Ruben vint et coucha avec Bala, concubine de son père ; et Israël l'apprit.

22. While Israel was encamped in that region, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father's concubine. When Israel heard of it, he was greatly offended. The sons of Jacob were now twelve.

23. Les fils de Jacob étaient au nombre de douze. Fils de Lia : Ruben, premier-né de Jacob, Siméon, Lévi, Juda, Issachar et Zabulon.

23. The sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob's first-born, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun;

24. Fils de Rachel : Joseph et Benjamin.

24. the sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin;

25. Fils de Bala, servante de Rachel : Dan et Nephthali.

25. the sons of Rachel's maid Bilhah: Dan and Naphtali;

26. Fils de Zel­pha, servante de Lia : Gad et Aser. Ce sont là les fils de Jacob, qui lui naquirent à Paddan-Aram.

26. the sons of Leah's maid Zilpah: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram.

27. Jacob arriva auprès d'Isaac, son père, à Mambré, à Qiryath-Arbé, qui est Hé­bron, où avaient séjourné Abraham et Isaac.

27. Jacob went home to his father Isaac at Mamre, in Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.

28. Les jours d'Isaac furent de cent quatre-vingts ans.

28. The lifetime of Isaac was one hundred and eighty years;

29. Isaac expira et mourut, et il fut réuni à son peuple, vieux et rassa­sié de jours. Esaü et Jacob, ses fils, l'en­terrèrent.

29. then he breathed his last. After a full life, he died as an old man and was taken to his kinsmen. His sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
