Amós, 5

1. Escuchen estas palabras que yo pronuncio contra ustedes, una lamentación por ti, Israel:

1. Listen to these words, this lament I pronounce over you, nation of Israel,

2. Ha caído la virgen de Israel, y no volverá ya a levantarse, postrada está en el suelo, y no hay quien la levante.

2. "Virgin Israel is fallen, never to rise again! With none to help her up, abandoned, she lies upon her own land."

3. Porque así dice Yavé a la gente de Israel: La ciudad de la cual salían mil hombres quedará sólo con cien, y de la que salían cien quedará sólo con diez.

3. For Yahweh says this, "The city that went forth to war a thousand strong shall be left with a hundred, and that which went forth with a hundred shall be left with ten in Israel."

4. Así dice Yavé a la Casa de Israel: Búsquenme a mí y vivirán,

4. For Yahweh says this to the nation of Israel, "Seek me, that you may live,

5. pero no me busquen en Betel ni vayan a Guilgal, ni pasen a Bersebá; porque Guilgal será enviada al destierro, Betel será reducida a la nada.

5. but not in Bethel nor come to Gilgal, nor pass through to Beersheba. For Gilgal shall be led into exile and Bethel brought to nothing."

6. Busquen a Yavé y vivirán, no sea que él mande fuego sobre la casa de José y la consuma, sin que haya nadie para apagarlo. El formó la Pléyade y Orión, él cambia las tinieblas en aurora y el día claro en noche oscura.

6. Seek Yahweh, that you may live, or he will rush like fire on the nation of Joseph and no one will be at Bethel to quench the blaze.

7. ¡Ay de ustedes, que transforman las leyes en algo tan amargo como el ajenjo y tiran por el suelo la justicia!

7. Woe to those whose decrees are bitterness, not justice, who trample on the rights!

8. El llama a las aguas del mar y las derrama por la superficie de la tierra; pues su nombre es Yavé.

8. He who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns dusk to dawn and darkens the day into night, who summons the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the earth - Yahweh is his name.

9. El trae la ruina sobre los potentes, y entrega al saqueo el recinto fortificado.

9. He makes destruction flash forth against the strong, and brings ruin upon the fortified city.

10. Ustedes odian al que defiende lo justo en el tribunal y aborrecen a todo el que dice la verdad.

10. You hate him who reproves in court; you despise him who speaks the truth.

11. Pues bien, ya que ustedes han pisoteado al pobre, exigiéndole una parte de su cosecha, esas casas de piedras canteadas que edifican no las van a ocupar, y de esas cepas escogidas que ahora plantan no probarán el vino.

11. Because you have trampled on the poor and extorted levies on their grain, though you have built mansions of hewn stones you will not dwell in them; though you have planted choice grapevines, you shall not drink of their wine.

12. Pues yo sé que son muchos sus crímenes y enormes sus pecados, opresores de la gente buena, que exigen dinero anticipado y hacen perder su juicio al pobre en los tribunales.

12. For I know the number of your crimes and how grievous are your sins: persecuting the just, taking bribes, turning away the needy at the gates.

13. Por esto el hombre prudente tiene que callarse, pues estamos pasando días infelices.

13. See, how the prudent keep silent at this time, for it is an evil time.

14. Busquen el bien y no el mal si quieren vivir, para que así Yavé esté con ustedes, como de continuo repiten.

14. Seek good and shun evil, that you may live. Then Yahweh, the God of hosts, as you have claimed, will be with you.

15. Aborrezcan el mal y amen el bien, impongan la justicia en sus tribunales, y quizá Yavé Sabaot se apiade del resto de José.

15. Hate wickedness and love virtue, and let justice prevail in the courts; perhaps Yahweh, the God of hosts, will take pity on the remnant of Joseph.

16. Por eso, así habla Yavé, el Dios de los Ejércitos, el Señor: Habrá lamentaciones en las plazas y en todas las callesse escucharán los "¡Ayes!". Invitarán a los campesinos para celebrar el duelo y contratarán lloronas como para un velorio.

16. Yahweh, God of hosts thus says: "In every square, wailing will be heard, in every street, cries of anguish. Farmers will be summoned to lament and professional mourners to weep noisily.

17. Pues habrá llantos en todas las viñas cuando yo pase en medio de ti, dice Yavé.

17. There will be lamentation in every vineyard, for I will pass through your midst, says the Lord."

18. ¡Qué decepción para aquellos que suspiran por el día en que vendrá Yavé! ¿Cómo será ese día para ustedes? Será un día de tinieblas, no de luz.

18. Woe to you who long for Yahweh's day! Why should you long for that day? It is a day of darkness, not of dawn,

19. Será como un hombre que huye del león y se topa con un oso, o como el que al entrar en casa apoya su mano en la pared y lo muerde una culebra.

19. as if a man fled from a lion only to run into a bear; or as if he entered his home, rested his hand against the wall, only to be bitten by a viper.

20. El día de Yavé será tinieblas y no luz, será un día sombrío, sin el menor destello.

20. The day of Yahweh will be darkness, not light, gloom without a glow of brightness.

21. Yo odio y aborrezco sus fiestas y no me agradan sus celebraciones.

21. "I hate, I reject your feasts, I take no pleasure when you assemble

22. Por más que me ofrezcan víctimas consumidas por el fuego, no me gustan sus ofrendas ni me llaman la atención sus sacrificios.

22. to offer me your burnt offerings. Your cereal offerings, I will not accept! Your offerings of fattened beasts, I will not look upon!

23. Váyanse lejos con el barullo de sus cantos, que ya no quiero escuchar la música de sus arpas.

23. Away with the noise of your chanting, away with your strumming on harps.

24. Quiero que la justicia sea tan corriente como el agua, y que la honradez crezca como un torrente inagotable.

24. But let justice run its course like water, and righteousness be like an ever-flowing river.

25. ¿Acaso me ofrecieron ustedes sacrificios y ofrendas en el desierto durante esos cuarenta años?

25. Did you, Israel, bring me offerings and sacrifices for forty years, in the wilderness?

26. Quédense, pues, con los ídolos que se han fabricado, con Sicut, su rey, y la estella de Queván, su dios,

26. Yet now you lift up King Sikkuth and Kiyun, your idols, which you made yourselves.

27. y yo los desterraré a ustedes a un lugar más allá de Damasco, dice Yavé cuyo nombre es: Dios de los Ejércitos.

27. Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Damascus," says Yahweh whose name is God of hosts.
