Amós, 8

1. El Señor puso ante mis ojos un canasto con frutas maduras,

1. Yahweh showed me a basket of ripe fruit

2. y me dijo: «¡Qué ves, Amos?» Yo respondí: «Una canasta de frutas maduras.» Yavé me dijo: «También está maduro mi pueblo de Israel, el fin ha llegado; ya no le perdonaré más.

2. and asked, "Amos, what do you see?" I replied, "A basket of ripe fruit." Then Yahweh said to me, "My people Israel is ripe for destruction; I will no longer forgive them.

3. Ese día sólo habrá en el palacio lamentos en vez de alegres cantos. Serán tantos los muertos, que quedarán tendidos en cualquier parte.»

3. The songs of the palace will become wailings on that day, says the Lord. Heaps of corpses everywhere, all cast out in silence."

4. A ustedes me dirijo, explotadores del pobre, que quisieran hacer desaparecer a los humildes.

4. Hear this, you who trample on the needy to do away with the weak of the land.

5. Ahí están sus palabras: «¿Cuándo pasará la fiesta de la luna nueva, para que podamos vender nuestro trigo? Que pase el sábado, para que abramos nuestras bodegas, pues nos irá tan bien que venderemos hasta el desecho. Vamos a reducir la medida, aumentar los precios y falsear las balanzas.»

5. You who say, "When will the new moon or the sabbath feast be over that we may open the store and sell our grain? Let us lower the measure and raise the price; let us cheat and tamper with the scales,

6. Ustedes juegan con la vida del pobre y del miserable tan sólo por algún dinero o por un par de sandalias.

6. and even sell the refuse with the whole grain. We will buy up the poor for money and the needy for a pair of sandals."

7. Pero no, pues Yavé jura, por su Tierra Santa, que jamás ha de olvidar lo que ustedes hacen.

7. Yahweh, the pride of Jacob, has sworn by himself, "I shall never forget their deeds."

8. Por eso la tierra ha temblado y están de duelo sus habitantes, el suelo sube y baja como aumentan y bajan las aguas del Nilo.

8. Shall not the land tremble because of this, and all who dwell in it mourn, while it rises up and heaves like the Nile and settles back again like the river of Egypt?

9. En ese día, dice Yavé, yo mandaré ponerse el sol en pleno mediodía y las tinieblas se extenderán sobre la tierra en día claro.

9. Yahweh says, "On that day I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight.

10. Cambiaré sus fiestas en velorio y sus cantos en lamentos. Haré que todo el mundo se vista de saco y que todos se rapen la cabeza. Ese día habrá tanto pesar como en los funerales de un hijo único; y el porvenir no será menos amargo.

10. I will turn your festivals into mourning and all your singing into wailing. Everyone will mourn, covered with sackcloth and every head will be shaved. I will make them mourn as for an only son and bring their day to a bitter end."

11. Llegará el día, dice Yavé, en que mandaré al país el hambre, mas no hambre de pan ni sed de agua, sino de oír la palabra de Yavé.

11. Yahweh says, "Days are coming when I will send famine upon the land, not hunger for bread or thirst for water, but for hearing the word of Yahweh.

12. Entonces atravesarán mares y recorrerán la tierra desde el norte hasta oriente buscando la palabra de Yavé, pero no la encontrarán.

12. Men will stagger from sea to sea, wander to and fro, from north to east, searching for the word of Yahweh, but they will not find it.

13. Aquel día desfallecerán de sed las jóvenes hermosas y los jóvenes valientes, los que juraban por el Idolo de Samaria,

13. On that day, fair virgins and strong young men will faint from thirst,

14. los que decían: «¡Viva el Dios de Dan!» y «¡Viva el Dios Querido de Bersebá!» Esos caerán para no levantarse más.

14. all the young people who swore by the god of Samaria and said: Long life to the god of Dan, long life to the god of Bersheba! They shall fall, never to rise again."
