Salmos, 136

1. Às margens dos rios de Babilônia, nos assentávamos chorando, lembrando-nos de Sião.*

1. Upon the rivers of Babylon, there we sat and wept: when we remembered Sion:

2. Nos salgueiros daquela terra, pendurávamos, então, as nossas harpas,

2. On the willows in the midst thereof we hung up our instruments.

3. porque aqueles que nos tinham deportado pediam-nos um cântico. Nossos opressores exigiam de nós um hino de alegria: “Cantai-nos um dos cânticos de Sião”.

3. For there they that led us into captivity required of us the words of songs. And they that carried us away, said: Sing ye to us a hymn of the songs of Sion.

4. Como poderíamos nós cantar um cântico do Senhor em terra estranha?

4. How shall we sing the song of the Lord in a strange land?

5. Se eu me esquecer de ti, ó Jerusalém, que minha mão direita se paralise!

5. If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand be forgotten.

6. Que minha língua se me apegue ao palato, se eu não me lembrar de ti, se não puser Jerusalém acima de todas as minhas alegrias.

6. Let my tongue cleave to my jaws, if I do not remember thee: If I make not Jerusalem the beginning of my joy.

7. Contra os filhos de Edom, lembrai-vos, Senhor, do dia da queda de Jerusalém, quando eles gritavam: “Arrasai-a, arrasai-a até os seus alicerces!”.*

7. Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom, in the day of Jerusalem: Who say: Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof.

8. Ó filha de Babilônia, a devastadora, feliz aquele que te retribuir o mal que nos fizeste!

8. O daughter of Babylon, miserable: blessed shall he be who shall repay thee thy payment which thou hast paid us.

9. Feliz aquele que se apoderar de teus filhinhos, para os esmagar contra o rochedo!

9. Blessed be he that shall take and dash thy little ones against the rock.
