Exodus, 18

1. Jethro, priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, had heard all about what God had done for Moses and for Israel his people: how Yahweh had brought Israel out of Egypt.

1. Jitro, der Priester von Midian, der Schwiegervater des Mose, hörte, was Gott alles an Mose und seinem Volk Israel getan und wie der Herr Israel aus Ägypten herausgeführt hatte.

2. Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, then took back Zipporah, Moses' wife, whom Moses had sent home,

2. Da nahm Jitro, der Schwiegervater des Mose, Zippora mit sich, die Frau des Mose - Mose hatte sie wieder zurückgeschickt -,

3. with her two sons; one of them was called Gershom because, he had said, 'I am an alien in a foreign land,'

3. und ihre beiden Söhne. Der eine hieß Gerschom (Ödgast), weil Mose gesagt hatte: Gast bin ich in fremdem Land.

4. and the other called Eliezer because 'My father's God is my help and has delivered me from Pharaoh's sword.'

4. Der andere hieß Eliëser (Gotthelf), weil Mose gesagt hatte: Der Gott meines Vaters hat mir geholfen und hat mich vor dem Schwert des Pharao gerettet.

5. Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, with Moses' sons and wife, came to Moses in the desert where he was encamped, at the mountain of God.

5. Jitro, der Schwiegervater des Mose, kam mit dessen Söhnen und dessen Frau in die Wüste am Gottesberg, wo Mose gerade lagerte.

6. 'Here is your father-in-law Jethro approaching', Moses was told, 'with your wife and her two sons.'

6. Er ließ Mose sagen: Ich, dein Schwiegervater Jitro, komme zu dir zusammen mit deiner Frau und ihren beiden Söhnen.

7. So Moses went out to greet his father-in-law, bowed low to him and kissed him; and when each had asked how the other was they went into the tent.

7. Da ging Mose seinem Schwiegervater entgegen, fiel vor ihm nieder und küsste ihn. Dann fragten sie einander nach ihrem Wohlergehen und gingen ins Zelt.

8. Moses then told his father-in-law all about what Yahweh had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel's sake, and about all the hardships that they had encountered on the way, and how Yahweh had rescued them.

8. Mose erzählte seinem Schwiegervater alles, was der Herr dem Pharao und den Ägyptern um Israels willen angetan hatte, auch von allen Schwierigkeiten, denen sie unterwegs begegnet waren, und wie der Herr sie gerettet hatte.

9. And Jethro was delighted at all Yahweh's goodness to Israel in having rescued them from the clutches of the Egyptians.

9. Jitro freute sich über alles, was der Herr an Israel Gutes getan hatte, als er es aus der Hand der Ägypter rettete.

10. 'Blessed be Yahweh', Jethro exclaimed, 'for having rescued you from the clutches of the Egyptians and the clutches of Pharaoh, for having rescued the people from the grasp of the Egyptians!

10. Jitro sagte: Gepriesen sei der Herr, der euch aus der Hand der Ägypter und des Pharao gerettet hat.

11. Now I know that Yahweh is greater than all other gods. . .'

11. Jetzt weiß ich: Jahwe ist größer als alle Götter. Denn die Ägypter haben Israel hochmütig behandelt, doch der Herr hat das Volk aus ihrer Hand gerettet.

12. Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, then offered a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God; and Aaron and all the elders of Israel came and ate with Moses' father-in-law in the presence of God.

12. Dann holte Jitro, der Schwiegervater des Mose, Tiere für Brandopfer und Schlachtopfer zur Ehre Gottes. Aaron und alle Ältesten Israels kamen, um mit dem Schwiegervater des Mose vor dem Angesicht Gottes ein Mahl zu halten.

13. On the following day, Moses took his seat to administer justice for the people, and the people were standing round him from morning till evening.

13. Am folgenden Morgen setzte sich Mose, um für das Volk Recht zu sprechen. Die Leute mussten vor Mose vom Morgen bis zum Abend anstehen.

14. Seeing all he did for the people, Moses' father-in-law said to him, 'Why do you do this for the people, why sit here alone with the people standing round you from morning till evening?'

14. Als der Schwiegervater des Mose sah, was er alles für das Volk zu tun hatte, sagte er: Was soll das, was du da für das Volk tust? Warum sitzt du hier allein und die vielen Leute müssen vom Morgen bis zum Abend vor dir anstehen?

15. Moses replied to his father-in-law, 'Because the people come to me to consult God.

15. Mose antwortete seinem Schwiegervater: Die Leute kommen zu mir, um Gott zu befragen.

16. When they have a problem they come to me, and I give a ruling between the one and the other and make God's statutes and laws known to them.'

16. Wenn sie einen Streitfall haben, kommen sie zu mir. Ich entscheide dann ihren Fall und teile ihnen die Gesetze und Weisungen Gottes mit.

17. Moses' father-in-law then said to him, 'What you are doing is not right.

17. Da sagte der Schwiegervater zu Mose: Es ist nicht richtig, wie du das machst.

18. You will only tire yourself out, and the people with you too, for the work is too heavy for you. You cannot do it all yourself.

18. So richtest du dich selbst zugrunde und auch das Volk, das bei dir ist. Das ist zu schwer für dich; allein kannst du es nicht bewältigen.

19. Now listen to the advice I am going to give you, and God be with you! Your task is to represent the people to God, to lay their cases before God,

19. Nun hör zu, ich will dir einen Rat geben und Gott wird mit dir sein. Vertritt du das Volk vor Gott! Bring ihre Rechtsfälle vor ihn,

20. and to teach them the statutes and laws, and show them the way they ought to follow and how they ought to behave.

20. unterrichte sie in den Gesetzen und Weisungen und lehre sie, wie sie leben und was sie tun sollen.

21. At the same time, from the people at large choose capable and God-fearing men, men who are trustworthy and incorruptible, and put them in charge of them as heads of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens,

21. Du aber sieh dich im ganzen Volk nach tüchtigen, gottesfürchtigen und zuverlässigen Männern um, die Bestechung ablehnen. Gib dem Volk Vorsteher für je tausend, hundert, fünfzig und zehn!

22. and make them the people's permanent judges. They will refer all important matters to you, but all minor matters they will decide themselves, so making things easier for you by sharing the burden with you.

22. Sie sollen dem Volk jederzeit als Richter zur Verfügung stehen. Alle wichtigen Fälle sollen sie vor dich bringen, die leichteren sollen sie selber entscheiden. Entlaste dich und lass auch andere Verantwortung tragen!

23. If you do this -- and may God so command you -- you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.'

23. Wenn du das tust, sofern Gott zustimmt, bleibst du der Aufgabe gewachsen und die Leute hier können alle zufrieden heimgehen.

24. Moses took his father-in-law's advice and did just as he said.

24. Mose hörte auf seinen Schwiegervater und tat alles, was er vorschlug.

25. Moses chose capable men from all Israel and put them in charge of the people as heads of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.

25. Mose wählte sich tüchtige Männer in ganz Israel aus und setzte sie als Hauptleute über das Volk ein, als Vorsteher für je tausend, hundert, fünfzig und zehn.

26. These acted as the people's permanent judges. They referred hard cases to Moses but decided minor matters themselves.

26. Sie standen dem Volk jederzeit als Richter zur Verfügung. Die schwierigen Fälle brachten sie vor Mose, alle leichteren entschieden sie selber.

27. Moses then set his father-in-law on his way, and he travelled back to his own country.

27. Mose verabschiedete seinen Schwiegervater und dieser kehrte in sein Land zurück.
