Jéremie, 36

1. La quatrième année de Joakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, la parole de Yahweh fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de Yahweh, en ces termes:

1. In the fourth year of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD:

2. "Prends un volume, et tu y écriras toutes les paroles que je t'ai dites contre Israël, contre Juda et contre toutes les nations depuis que je t'ai parlé, depuis les jours de Josias jusqu'aujourd'hui.

2. Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you against Israel, Judah, and all the nations, from the day I first spoke to you, in the days of Josiah, until today.

3. Peut-être que, quand la maison de Juda entendra tout le mal que j'ai à dessein de leur faire, ils se détourneront chacun de sa mauvaise voie, et je pardonnerai leur iniquité et leur péché."

3. Perhaps, when the house of Judah hears all the evil I have in mind to do to them, they will turn back each from his evil way, so that I may forgive their wickedness and their sin.

4. Jérémie appela donc Baruch, fils de Néria, et Baruch écrivit sous la dictée de Jérémie; dans-le volume, toutes les paroles que Yahweh lui avait dites.

4. So Jeremiah called Baruch, son of Neriah, who wrote down on a scroll, as Jeremiah dictated, all the words which the LORD had spoken to him.

5. Puis Jérémie donna cet ordre à Baruch: Je suis empêché, et ne puis entrer dans la maison de Yahweh.

5. Then Jeremiah charged Baruch: I cannot go to the house of the LORD; I am prevented from doing so.

6. Tu iras donc, toi, et tu liras, dans le volume que tu as écrit sous ma dictée, les paroles de Yahweh aux oreilles du peuple rassemblé dans la maison de Yahweh le jour du jeûne, ainsi que de tous ceux de Juda qui seront venus de leurs villes.

6. Do you go on the fast day and read publicly in the LORD'S house the LORD'S words from the scroll you wrote at my dictation; read them also to all the men of Judah who come up from their cities.

7. Peut-être que leur supplication arrivera devant Yahweh et qu'ils se détourneront chacun de sa mauvaise voie; car grande est la colère et l'indignation que Yahweh a exprimées contre ce peuple." -

7. Perhaps they will lay their supplication before the LORD and will all turn back from their evil way; for great is the fury of anger with which the LORD has threatened this people.

8. -Et Baruch, fils de Néria, fit tout ce que Jérémie le prophète lui avait commandé, lisant dans le livre les paroles de Yahweh dans la maison de Yahweh.

8. Baruch, son of Neriah, did everything the prophet Jeremiah commanded; from the book-scroll he read the LORD'S words in the LORD'S house.

9. En la cinquième année de Joakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, le neuvième mois, on publia un jeûne devant Yahweh pour tout le peuple de Jérusalem et pour tout le peuple qui vint des villes de Juda à Jérusalem.

9. In the ninth month, in the fifth year of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, a fast to placate the LORD was proclaimed for all the people of Jerusalem and all who came from Judah's cities to Jerusalem.

10. Baruch lut dans le livre les paroles de Yahweh aux oreilles de tout le peuple dans la maison de Yahweh, dans la chambre de Gamarias, fils de Saphan, secrétaire dans le parvis supérieur, à l'entrée de la porte neuve de la maison de Yahweh,

10. It was in the room of Gemariah, son of the scribe Shaphan, in the upper court of the LORD'S house, at the entrance of the New Temple-Gate, that Baruch publicly read the words of Jeremiah from his book.

11. Michée, fils de Gamarias, fils de Saphan, entendit toutes les paroles de Yahweh contenues dans le livre;

11. Now Micaiah, son of Gemariah, son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the LORD read from the book.

12. et il descendit à la mai-son du roi, dans la chambre du secré-taire, où étaient assis tous les chefs, Eli-sama, le secrétaire, Dalaïas, fils de Séméïas, Elnathan, fils d'Achobor, Gama-rias, fils de Saphan, Sédécias, fils de Hananias, et tous ;les autres.

12. So he went down to the king's palace, into the scribe's chamber, where the princes were just then in session: Elishama, the scribe, Delaiah, son of Shemaiah, Elnathan, son of Achbor, Gemariah, son of Shaphan, Zedekiah, son of Hananiah, and the other princes.

13. Et Michée leur rapporta toutes les paroles qu'il avait entendues lorsque Baruch lisait dans le livre aux oreilles du peuple.

13. To them Micaiah reported all that he had heard Baruch read publicly from his book.

14. Alors tous les chefs envoyèrent vers Baruch, fils de Nathanias, fils de Sélémias, fils de Chusi, pour lui dire: "Prends le volume dans lequel tu as lu aux oreilles du peuple, et viens." Ba-ruch, fils de Néria, prit le volume et se rendit auprès d'eux.

14. Thereupon the princes sent Jehudi, son of Nethaniah, son of Shelemiah, son of Cushi, to Baruch with the order: "Come, and bring with you the scroll you read publicly to the people." Scroll in hand, Baruch, son of Neriah, went to them.

15. Ils lui dirent: "Assieds-toi, et lis ce livre à nos oreil-les." Et Baruch le leur lut.

15. "Sit down," they said to him, "and read it to us." Baruch read it to them,

16. Lorsqu'ils eurent entendu toutes ces paroles, ils se regardèrent avec effroi les uns les autres, et dirent à Baruch: "Il faut que nous rapportions au roi toutes ces paroles."

16. and when they heard all its words, they were frightened and said to one another, "We must certainly tell the king all these things."

17. Puis ils adressèrent à Baruch cette ques-tion: "Déclare-nous comment tu as écrit toutes ces paroles sorties de sa bouche."

17. Then they asked Baruch: "Tell us, please, how you came to write down all these words."

18. Baruch leur répondit: "Il m'a dicté de sa bouche toutes ces paroles, et je les ai écrites dans ce livre avec de l'encre."

18. "Jeremiah dictated all these words to me," Baruch answered them, "and I wrote them down with ink in the book."

19. Alors les chefs dirent à Baruch: "Va, cache-toi, ainsi que Jéré-mie, et que personne ne sache où vous êtes."

19. At this the princes said to Baruch, "Go into hiding, you and Jeremiah; let no one know where you are."

20. Ils entrèrent ensuite chez le roi dans la cour, laissant le volume dans la chambre d'Elisama, le secrétaire, et ils rap-portèrent au roi tout ce qui venait de se passer.

20. Leaving the scroll in safekeeping in the room of Elishama the scribe, they entered the room where the king was. When they told him everything that had happened,

21. Le roi envoya Judi pour prendre le volume, et quand Judi l'eut pris dans la chambre d'Elisama, le secrétaire, il le lut aux oreilles du roi et aux oreilles de tous les chefs qui se tenaient devant lui.

21. he sent Jehudi to fetch the scroll. Jehudi brought it from the room of Elishama the scribe, and read it to the king and to all the princes who were in attendance on the king.

22. Or le roi était assis dans l'appartement d'hiver, au neuvième mois, et le brasier était allumé devant lui.

22. Now the king was sitting in his winter house, since it was the ninth month, and fire was burning in a brazier before him.

23. Dès que Judi eut lu trois ou quatre colonnes, le roi coupa le livre avec le canif du secrétaire, et le jeta au feu dans le brasier, jusqu'à ce que tout le volume fût consumé par le feu du brasier.

23. Each time Jehudi finished reading three or four columns, the king would cut off the piece with a scribe's knife and cast it into the fire in the brazier, until the entire roll was consumed in the fire.

24. Le roi et tous ses serviteurs qui entendirent tontes ces paroles n'en furent point effrayés et ne déchirèrent point leurs vêtements.

24. Hearing all these words did not frighten the king and his ministers or cause them to rend their garments.

25. Pourtant Elnathan, Dalaïas et Gamarias avaient fait des instances auprès du roi pour qu'il ne brûlât pas le volume; mais il ne les avait pas écoutés.

25. And though Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them,

26. Puis le roi ordonna à Jérémiel, fils du roi, et à Séraias, fils d'Ezriel, et à Sélé-mias, fils d'Abdéel, de saisir Baruch, le secrétaire, et Jérémie, le prophète; mais Yahweh les cacha.

26. but commanded Jerahmeel, a royal prince, and Seraiah, son of Azriel, and Shelemiah, son of Abdeel, to arrest Baruch, the secretary, and the prophet Jeremiah. But the LORD kept them concealed.

27. La parole de Yahweh fut adressée à Jérémie, après que le roi eut brûlé le volume et les paroles que Baruch avait écrites sous la dictée de Jérémie, en ces : termes:

27. This word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, after the king burned the scroll with the text Jeremiah had dictated to Baruch:

28. Va prendre un autre volume, et tu y écriras toutes les premières pa-roles qui étaient dans le premier volume que Joakim, roi de Juda, a brûlé.

28. Take another scroll, and write on it everything that the first scroll contained, which Jehoiakim, king of Judah, burned up.

29. Et tu diras à Joakim, roi de Juda: Ainsi parle Yahweh: Toi, tu as brûlé ce volu-me, en disant: "Pourquoi y as-tu écrit que le roi de Babylone viendra certainement, qu'il détruira ce pays et qu'il en fera disparaître hommes et bêtes?"

29. And against Jehoiakim, king of Judah, say this: Thus says the LORD: You burned that scroll, saying, "Why did you write on it: Babylon's king shall surely come and lay waste this land and empty it of man and beast?"

30. C'est pourquoi Yahweh parle ainsi tou-chant Joakim, roi de Juda: Il n'aura pas un des siens assis sur le trône de David; et sera jeté dehors, à la chaleur pendant le jour, et au froid pendant la nuit.

30. The LORD now says of Jehoiakim, king of Judah: No descendant of his shall succeed to David's throne; his corpse shall be cast out, exposed to the heat of day, to the cold of night.

31. Je punirai sur lui, sur sa race et sur tous ses serviteurs leur iniquité, et je ferai venir sur eux, sur les habi-tants de Jérusalem et sur les hommes de Juda, tous les malheurs que je leur ai annoncés sans qu'ils aient voulu m'é-couter.

31. I will punish him and his descendants and his ministers for their wickedness; against them and the citizens of Jerusalem and the men of Judah I will fulfill all the threats of evil which went unheeded.

32. Jérémie prit donc un autre volume et le donna à Baruch, fils de Nérias, son secrétaire; et Baruch y écrivit, sous la dictée de Jérémie, toutes les paroles du livre que Joakim, roi de Juda, avait brûlé, et beaucoup d'autres paroles semblables y furent ajoutées.

32. Jeremiah took another scroll, and gave it to his secretary, Baruch, son of Neriah; he wrote on it at Jeremiah's dictation all the words contained in the book which Jehoiakim, king of Judah, had burned in the fire, and many others of the same kind in addition.
