1. Paroles de Jérémie, fils d'Helcias, un des prêtres habitant à Anathoth, au pays de Benjamin.

1. The words of Jeremiah, son of Hilkiah, of a priestly family in Anathoth, in the land of Benjamin.

2. La parole de Yahweh lui fut adressée au temps de Josias, fils d'Amon, roi de Juda, la treizième année de son règne;

2. The word of the LORD first came to him in the days of Josiah, son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign,

3. puis au temps de Joakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, jusqu'à la fin de la onzième année de Sédécias, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, jusqu'à la déportation de Jérusa-lem au cinquième mois.

3. and continued through the reign of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, and until the downfall and exile of Jerusalem in the fifth month of the eleventh year of Zedekiah, son of Josiah, king of Judah.

4. La parole de Yahweh me fut ainsi adressée:

4. The word of the LORD came to me thus:

5. "Avant de te former dans le sein de ta mère, je te connaissais, Et avant que tu sortisses de ses flancs, je t'ai consacré; Je t'ai établi prophète des nations."

5. Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you.

6. Et je dis: "Ah ! Seigneur Yahweh, je ne sais point parler, car je suis un enfant!"

6. "Ah, Lord GOD!" I said, "I know not how to speak; I am too young."

7. Et Yahweh me répondit: "Ne dis pas: Je suis un enfant, Car tu iras vers tous ceux à qui je t'enverrai, Et tu diras tout ce que je t'ordonnerai.

7. But the LORD answered me, Say not, "I am too young." To whomever I send you, you shall go; whatever I command you, you shall speak.

8. Sois sans crainte devant eux, Car je suis avec toi pour te délivrer," dit Yahweh.

8. Have no fear before them, because I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD.

9. Puis Yahweh étendit sa main et toucha ma bouche, et Yahweh me dit: "Voici que je mets mes paroles dans ta bouche;

9. Then the LORD extended his hand and touched my mouth, saying, See, I place my words in your mouth!

10. Vois, je t'établis en ce jour sur les nations et sur les royaumes, Pour arracher et pour abattre, Pour ruiner et pour détruire, Pour bâtir et pour planter.

10. This day I set you over nations and over kingdoms, To root up and to tear down, to destroy and to demolish, to build and to plant.

11. Et la parole de Yahweh me fut ainsi adressée: "Que vois-tu, Jérémie?" Je répondis: "Je vois une branche d'amandier."

11. The word of the LORD came to me with the question: What do you see, Jeremiah? "I see a branch of the watching-tree," I replied.

12. Et Yahweh me dit: "Tu as bien vu, car je veille sur ma parole pour l'accomplir."-

12. Then the LORD said to me: Well have you seen, for I am watching to fulfill my word.

13. La parole de Yahweh me fut pour la seconde fois adressée ainsi: "Que vois-tu?" Je répondis: "Je vois une chaudière qui bout, Et elle est du côté du septentrion."

13. A second time the word of the LORD came to me with the question: What do you see? "I see a boiling cauldron," I replied, "that appears from the north."

14. Et Yahweh me dit: "C'est du septentrion que le malheur se répandra Sur tous les habitants du pays.

14. And from the north, said the LORD to me, evil will boil over upon all who dwell in the land.

15. Car je vais appeler toutes les familles des royaumes du septentrion, dit Yahweh, Et elles viendront et placeront chacune leur siège A l'entrée des portes de Jérusalem, Contre toutes ses murailles à l'entour Et contre toutes les villes de Juda.

15. Lo, I am summoning all the kingdoms of the north, says the LORD; Each king shall come and set up his throne at the gateways of Jerusalem, Opposite her walls all around and opposite all the cities of Judah.

16. Et je prononcerai mes sentences contre eux Pour toute leur méchanceté, Parce qu'ils m'ont abandonné, Qu'ils ont offert de l'encens à d'autres dieux Et ont adoré l'ouvrage de leurs mains.

16. I will pronounce my sentence against them for all their wickedness in forsaking me, And in burning incense to strange gods and adoring their own handiwork.

17. Et toi, ceins tes reins, lève-toi, Et dis-leur tout ce que je t'ordonnerai. Ne te laisse pas abattre à cause d'eux, De peur que je ne t'abatte devant eux.

17. But do you gird your loins; stand up and tell them all that I command you. Be not crushed on their account, as though I would leave you crushed before them;

18. Voici que je t'établis en ce jour comme une ville forte, Une colonne de fer et une muraille d'airain, Contre tout le pays, Contre les rois de Juda, contre ses princes, Contre ses prêtres et contre le peuple.

18. For it is I this day who have made you a fortified city, A pillar of iron, a wall of brass, against the whole land: Against Judah's kings and princes, against its priests and people.

19. Ils te feront la guerre, Mais ils ne pourront rien sur toi, Car je suis avec toi pour te délivrer, dit Yahweh."

19. They will fight against you, but not prevail over you, for I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD.
