Jéremie, 34

1. La parole qui fut adressée en ces termes à Jérémie de la part de Jého-vah, lorsque Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, avec toute son armée, tous les royaumes de la terre soumis à sa do-mination et tous les peuples, combattaient contre Jérusalem et contre toutes les villes de sa dépendance:

1. This word came to Jeremiah from the LORD while Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, and his armies and the earth's kingdoms subject to him, as well as the other peoples, were all attacking Jerusalem and all her cities:

2. Ainsi parle Yahweh, Dieu d'Israël: Va et parle à Sédécias, roi de Juda, et dis-lui: Ainsi parle Yahweh: Voici que je vais livrer cette ville au roi de Babylone et il la brûlera.

2. Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Go to Zedekiah, king of Judah, and tell him: Thus says the LORD: I am handing this city over to the king of Babylon; he will destroy it with fire.

3. Et toi, tu n'échapperas pas à sa main, car tu seras certainement pris et livré entre ses mains; tes yeux verront les yeux du roi de Babylone, il te parlera bouche à bouche, et tu iras à Babylone.

3. Neither shall you escape his hand; rather you will be captured and fall into his hands. You shall see the king of Babylon and speak to him face to face. Then you shall be taken to Babylon.

4. Toutefois écoute la parole de Yahweh, Sédécias, roi de Juda. Voici ce que Yahweh dit de toi: Tu ne mourras point par l'épée.

4. But if you obey the word of the LORD, Zedekiah, king of Judah, then, says the LORD to you, you shall not die by the sword.

5. Tu mourras en paix, et comme on a brûlé des parfums pour tes pères, les anciens rois qui t'ont précédé, ainsi on en brûlera pour toi, et l'on te pleurera en disant: Hélas! Sei-gneur! Car j'ai parlé, moi, dit Yahweh.

5. You shall die in peace, and they will lament you as their lord, and burn spices for your burial as they did for your fathers, the kings who preceded you from the first; it is I who make this promise, says the LORD.

6. - Jérémie le prophète répéta toutes ces paroles à Sédécias, roi de Juda et de Jérusalem.

6. The prophet Jeremiah told all these things to Zedekiah, king of Judah, in Jerusalem,

7. Or l'armée du roi de Baby-lone combattait contre Jérusalem et con-tre les villes de Juda qui tenaient encore contre Lachis et contre Azéca; car de toutes les villes de Juda, il ne restait plus que ces villes fortes.

7. while the armies of the king of Babylon were attacking Jerusalem and the remaining cities of Judah, Lachish, and Azekah, since these alone were left of the fortified cities of Judah.

8. La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de Yahweh, après que le roi Sédécias eut fait un accord avec tout le peuple de Jérusalem pour publier un af-franchissement,

8. This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD after King Zedekiah had made an agreement with all the people in Jerusalem to issue an edict of emancipation.

9. afin que chacun renvoyât libre son esclave et sa servante, hébreu ou hébreuse, et qu'il n'y eût per-sonne qui retînt en servitude un Juif son frère.

9. Everyone was to free his Hebrew slaves, male and female, so that no one should hold a man of Judah, his brother, in slavery.

10. Tous les chefs et tout le peu-ple, qui étaient entrés dans cet accord, consentirent à renvoyer libres chacun son esclave et sa servante, pour ne plus les retenir en servitude; ils y consentirent et les renvoyèrent.

10. All the princes and the others who entered the agreement consented to set free their male and female servants, so that they should be slaves no longer. But though they agreed and freed them,

11. Mais ensuite ils changèrent d'avis et firent revenir les es-claves, hommes et femmes, qu'ils avaient affranchis, et les obligèrent à redevenir leurs esclaves et leurs servantes.

11. afterward they took back their male and female slaves whom they had set free and again forced them into service.

12. Alors la parole de Yahweh fut adres-sée à Jérémie de la part de Yahweh en ces termes:

12. Then this word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:

13. J'avais fait alliance avec vos pères lorsque je les tirai du pays d'Egypte, de la maison de servitude, en leur disant:

13. Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: The day I brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the place where they were slaves, I made this covenant with them:

14. Au terme de sept ans, chacun de vous renverra libre son frère hébreu qui lui aura été vendu; il te ser-vira six ans, puis tu le renverras libre de chez toi, Mais vos pères ne m'ont point écouté; ils n'ont point prêté l'oreille.

14. Every seventh year each of you shall set free his Hebrew brother who has sold himself to you; six years he shall serve you, but then you shall let him go free. Your fathers, however, did not heed me or obey me.

15. Vous, aujourd'hui, vous aviez agi au-trement et aviez fait ce qui est droit à mes yeux, en proclamant la liberté chacun pour son prochain; vous aviez fait un accord en ma présence, dans la maison sur laquelle mon nom est invoqué.

15. Today you indeed repented and did what is right in my eyes by proclaiming the emancipation of your brethren and making an agreement before me in the house that is named after me.

16. Mais vous êtes revenus en arrière, et vous avez profané mon nom; chacun de vous a fait revenir l'esclave et la ser-vante que vous aviez affranchis et ren-dus a eux-mêmes, et vous les avez obligés à redevenir vos esclaves et vos ser-vantes.

16. But then you changed your mind and profaned my name by taking back your male and female slaves to whom you had given their freedom; you forced them once more into slavery.

17. C'est pourquoi ainsi parle Yahweh: Vous ne m'avez point obéi en publiant la liberté chacun pour son frère, chacun pour son prochain; voici que je publie pour vous la liberté d'aller a l'épée, à la peste et à la famine, et je vous livrerai pour être maltraités parmi tous les royaumes de la terre.

17. Therefore, thus says the LORD: You did not obey me by proclaiming your neighbors and kinsmen free. I now proclaim you free, says the LORD, for the sword, famine, and pestilence. I will make you an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.

18. Et les hommes qui ont transgressé mon alliance, qui n'ont point exécuté les termes de l'ac-cord qu'ils ont fait en ma présence, je les rendrai tels que le jeune taureau qu'ils ont coupé en deux pour passer entre les deux moitiés,

18. The men who violated my covenant and did not observe the terms of the agreement which they made before me, I will make like the calf which they cut in two, between whose two parts they passed.

19. les chefs de Juda et les chefs de Jérusalem, officiers de la cour et prêtres, et tous les gens du pays qui ont passé entre les moitiés du jeune taureau.

19. The princes of Judah and of Jerusalem, the courtiers, the priests, and the common people, who passed between the parts of the calf,

20. Je les livrerai entre les mains de leurs ennemis et entre les mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie, et leurs cadavres seront la pâture des oiseaux du ciel et des bêtes de la terre.

20. I will hand over, all of them, to their enemies, to those who seek their lives: their corpses shall be food for the birds of the air and the beasts of the field.

21. Et Sédécias, roi de Juda, et les principaux de sa cour, je les livrerai aux mains de leurs ennemis, aux mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie, aux mains de l'ar-mée de Babylone qui s'est éloignée de vous.

21. Zedekiah, too, king of Judah, and his princes, I will hand over to their enemies, to those who seek their lives, to the soldiers of the king of Babylon who have at present withdrawn from you.

22. Je vais leur donner mes ordres, dit Yahweh, et les ramener contre cette ville; ils combattront contre elle, ils la prendront et la brûleront, et je ferai des villes de Juda un désert sans habitants. .

22. I will give the command, says the LORD, and bring them back to this city. They shall attack and capture it, and destroy it with fire; the cities of Judah I will turn into a desert where no man dwells.
