Ecclesiasticus, 37

1. Every friend saith, I am his friend also: but there is a friend, which is only a friend in name.

1. Jokainen ystävä sanoo: "Ystävä minäkin olen", mutta moni on ystävä ainoastaan nimeltä.

2. Is it not a grief unto death, when a companion and friend is turned to an enemy?

2. Eikö se ole murhe aina kuolemaan asti, jos kumppani ja ystävä muuttuu vihamieheksi?

3. O wicked imagination, whence camest thou in to cover the earth with deceit?

3. Voi, sinä paha mielenlaatu! Mistä olet sinä vyörynyt, niin että peität vilpillä maan?

4. There is a companion, which rejoiceth in the prosperity of a friend, but in the time of trouble will be against him.

4. Moni kumppani nauttii ystävästä silloin, kun on iloa, mutta ahdingon aikana on häntä vastaan,

5. There is a companion, which helpeth his friend for the belly, and taketh up the buckler against the enemy.

5. Moni kumppani näkee vaivaa yhdessä ystäväänsä kanssa vatsansa hyväksi, mutta sodan tullen tempaakin kilven.

6. Forget not thy friend in thy mind, and be not unmindful of him in thy riches.

6. Älä unhota mielestäsi ystävääsi, äläkä ole muistamatta häntä, kun olet rahoissa.

7. Every counsellor extolleth counsel; but there is some that counselleth for himself.

7. Jokainen neuvonantaja kehuu omaa neuvoansa, mutta moni neuvoo omaksi eduksensa.

8. Beware of a counsellor, and know before what need he hath; for he will counsel for himself; lest he cast the lot upon thee,

8. Pidä varasi neuvonantajalta, ja ota ensin selvä siitä, mitä hän itse tarvitsee, ettei hän vain anna neuvoja omaksi hyväkseen, ettei hän heitä sinusta arpaa

9. And say unto thee, Thy way is good: and afterward he stand on the other side, to see what shall befall thee.

9. ja sano sinulle: "Hyvällä teillä olet", vaikka hän asettuu syrjään nähdäksensä, kuinka sinun käy.

10. Consult not with one that suspecteth thee: and hide thy counsel from such as envy thee.

10. Älä neuvottele sen kanssa, joka katsoo sinuun karsaasti, vaan kadehtijoiltasi pidä aikeesi salassa.

11. Neither consult with a woman touching her of whom she is jealous; neither with a coward in matters of war; nor with a merchant concerning exchange; nor with a buyer of selling; nor with an envious man of thankfulness; nor with an unmerciful man touching kindness; nor with the slothful for any work; nor with an hireling for a year of finishing work; nor with an idle servant of much business: hearken not unto these in any matter of counsel.

11. Älä neuvottele naisen kanssa hänen kilpailijattarestaan, älä pelkurin kanssa sodasta, älä kauppiaan kanssa tavaranvaihdosta, älä ostajan kanssa myynnistä, älä hyvääsuomattoman kanssa kiitollisuudesta, älä armahtamattoman kanssa hyväntekeväisyydestä, älä hidastelijan kanssa mistään työstä, älä vuosipalkkalaisen kanssa loppuvuoden töistä, äläkä laiskan palvelijan kanssa mistään työnteosta. Sellaisiin älä luota missään neuvonpidoissa;

12. But be continually with a godly man, whom thou knowest to keep the commandments of the Lord, whose, mind is according to thy mind, and will sorrow with thee, if thou shalt miscarry.

12. vaan ole yhäti hurskaan miehen parissa, jonka tiedät pitävät käskyt, joka on kanssasi samanmielinen ja joka, joudut lankeamaan, kärsii sinun kanssasi.

13. And let the counsel of thine own heart stand: for there is no man more faithful unto thee than it.

13. Pidä myös pätevänä oman sydämesi neuvo, sillä ei kukaan ole sinulle uskollisempi kuin se,

14. For a man's mind is sometime wont to tell him more than seven watchmen, that sit above in an high tower.

14. Useinhan miehen mieli ilmoittaa hänelle enemmän kuin seitsemän vartijaa, jotka istuvat korkeassa vartiopaikassa.

15. And above all this pray to the most High, that he will direct thy way in truth.

15. Mutta yli kaiken tämän rukoile Korkeinta, että hän totuudessaan sinun tiesi tasoittaisi.

16. Let reason go before every enterprize, and counsel before every action.

16. Kaiken työn alku olkoon harkinta, ja jokaisen tehtävän edellä käyköön neuvonpito.

17. The countenance is a sign of changing of the heart.

17. Sydämen muuttumisen seuraus on, että näkyviin kohoavat nämä neljä:

18. Four manner of things appear: good and evil, life and death: but the tongue ruleth over them continually.

18. Hyvä ja paha, elämä ja kuolema. Mutta kieli pitää alati niitä vallassaan.

19. There is one that is wise and teacheth many, and yet is unprofitable to himself.

19. Moni mies on taitava ja on monien kasvattaja, mutta omalla kohdallansa ei kelpaa mihinkään.

20. There is one that sheweth wisdom in words, and is hated: he shall be destitute of all food.

20. Moni näyttää sanoissa viisaalta, mutta on vihattu. Hän jää vaille kaikkea toimeentuloakin,

21. For grace is not given, him from the Lord, because he is deprived of all wisdom.

21. sillä Herra ei ole suonut hänelle miellyttävyyttä; häneltä viisaus peräti puuttuu.

22. Another is wise to himself; and the fruits of understanding are commendable in his mouth.

22. Moni on viisas omaksi hyväksensä, ja hänen ymmärryksensä hedelmät ovat luotettavia vain hänen omassa suussaan.

23. A wise man instructeth his people; and the fruits of his understanding fail not.

23. Viisas mies kasvattaa kansaansa, ja hänen ymmärryksensä hedelmät ovat luotettavat.

24. A wise man shall be filled with blessing; and all they that see him shall count him happy.

24. Viisas mies saa runsaasi siunausta, ja häntä ylistävät onnelliseksi kaikki, jotka hänet näkevät.

25. The days of the life of man may be numbered: but the days of Israel are innumerable.

25. Miehen elämä kestää jonkun luvun päiviä, mutta Israelin päivät ovat lukemattomat.

26. A wise man shall inherit glory among his people, and his name shall be perpetual.

26. Viisas saa perinnökseen kansansa keskuudessa luottamuksen, ja hänen nimensä elää iäti.

27. My son, prove thy soul in thy life, and see what is evil for it, and give not that unto it.

27. Poikani! Tutki oma luontosi elämäsi kuluessa, ja katso mikä sille on pahaa, äläkä sille sitä anna.

28. For all things are not profitable for all men, neither hath every soul pleasure in every thing.

28. Sillä ei kaikki ole hyväksi kaikille, eikä kenenkään luonto siedä mitä tahansa.

29. Be not unsatiable in any dainty thing, nor too greedy upon meats:

29. Älä ole kohtuuton missään nautinnossa, äläkä antaudu hillittömästi herkutteluun.

30. For excess of meats bringeth sickness, and surfeiting will turn into choler.

30. Sillä paljoista ruuista tulee vaiva, ja kohtuuttomuus vie oksennukseen asti.

31. By surfeiting have many perished; but he that taketh heed prolongeth his life.

31. Kohtuuttomuuden takia on moni kuollut; mutta joka pitää varansa, se jatkaa ikäänsä.
