Jó, 1

1. Havia na terra de Hus um homem, chamado Job. Este homem era sincero, recto, temia a Deus e fugia do mal.

1. There was once a man in the land of Uz called Job: a sound and honest man who feared God and shunned evil.

2. Nasceram-lhe sete filhos e três filhas.

2. Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.

3. Possuía sete mil ovelhas, três mil camelos, quinhentas juntas de bois, quinhentas jumentas e um grande número de servos. Este homem era o maior entre todos os Orientais.

3. And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of all the Sons of the East.

4. Seus filhos iam e banqueteavam-se em suas casas, cada um em seu dia, e mandavam convidar suas três irmãs para irem comer e beber com eles.

4. It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

5. Tendo decorrido o turno dos dias de banquete, Job mandava chamar seus filhos, purificava-os e, levantando-se de madrugada, oferecia holocausto por cada um deles, porque dizia: Talvez meus filhos tenham pecado, ofendido a Deus nos seus corações. Assim fazia Job de cada vez.

5. Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawn on the following day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons have sinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time.

6. Porém um certo dia, tendo-se os filhos de Deus (isto é, os anjos) apresentado diante do Senhor, encontrou-se também Satanás entre eles.

6. One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan.

7. O Senhor disse-lhe: Donde vens tu? Ele respondeu: Venho de dar uma volta pela terra e de passear por ela.

7. So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roaming around there.'

8. O Senhor disse-lhe: Porventura consideraste o meu servo Job? Não há semelhante a ele na terra: homem sincero e recto, teme a Deus e foge do mal?

8. So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'

9. Satanás, respondeu: Porventura Job teme (ou serve) debalde a Deus?

9. 'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?

10. Não o cercaste de um vaiado protetor, a ele, à sua casa e a todos os seus bens? Não abençoaste as obras de suas mãos, e os seus bens não se têm multiplicado sobre a terra?

10. Have you not put a wall round him and his house and all his domain? You have blessed all he undertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside.

11. Mas estende tu um pouco a tua mão, toca em tudo o que ele possui, e verás se ele te não amaldiçoa na tua face.

11. But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: then, I warrant you, he will curse you to your face.'

12. Disse, pois, o Senhor a Satanás: Pois bem, tudo o que ele tem está era teu poder; sòmente não estendas a tua mão contra ele. Satanás saiu da presença do Senhor.

12. 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'all he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' So Satan left the presence of Yahweh.

13. Um dia, enquanto os filhos e as filhas de Job estavam comendo e bebendo vinho em casa do seu irmão primogênito,

13. On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother's house,

14. foi ter com Job um mensageiro, que lhe disse: Os bois lavravam, e as jumentas pastavam junto deles;

14. a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at their side,

15. de repente acometeram-nos os Sabeus, que levaram tudo e passaram à espada os criados; só eu escapei para te trazer a nova.

15. when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the servants to the sword: I alone have escaped to tell you.'

16. Estando ainda este a falar, veio outro e disse: O fogo de Deus caiu do céu, e, ferindo as ovelhas e os pastores, consumiu-os; escapei eu só para te trazer a nova.

16. He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God', he said, 'has fallen from heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.'

17. Ainda este falava, quando chegou outro, que disse: Os Caldeus dividiram-se era três esquadrões, lançaram-se sobre os camelos e levaram-nos, e passaram à espada os criados; só eu escapei para te trazer a nova.

17. He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'three bands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put the servants to the sword: I alone have escaped to tell you.'

18. Ainda este estava falando, quando entrou outro, que disse: Estando teus filhos e filhas comendo e, bebendo vinho em casa de seu irmão mais velho,

18. He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and daughters', he said, 'were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's house,

19. de repente levantou-se um vento muito forte da banda do deserto, que abalou os quatro cantos da casa, a qual, caindo, esmagou os teus filhos, que morreram; só escapei eu para te trazer a nova.

19. when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fell in on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tell you.'

20. Então levantou-se Job, rasgou as suas vestes e rapou a cabeça; depois prostrou-se por terra, adorou (o Senhor)

20. Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, falling to the ground, he prostrated himself

21. e disse: Nu saí do ventre de minha mãe, e nu tornarei para lá (para o seio da terra); o Senhor o deu, o Senhor o tirou, como foi do agrado do Senhor, assim sucedeu; bendito seja o nome do Senhor.

21. and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shall return again. Yahweh gave, Yahweh has taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh!

22. Em todas estas coisas Job não pecou com os seus lábios, nem disse coisa alguma insensata contra Deus.

22. In all this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God.
