Proverbios, 24

1. No tengas envidia de los malos, no desees estar con ellos,

1. Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.

2. porque su corazón trama violencias, y sus labios hablan de desgracias.

2. For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.

3. Con la sabiduria se construye una casa, y con la prudencia se afianza;

3. Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established:

4. con la ciencia se llenan los cilleros de todo bien precioso y deseable.

4. And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

5. El varón sabio está fuerte, el hombre de ciencia fortalece su vigor;

5. A wise man [is] strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.

6. porque con sabios consejos harás la guerra, y en la abundancia de consejeros está el éxito.

6. For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors [there is] safety.

7. Muy alta está la sabiduría para el necio: no abre su boca en la puerta.

7. Wisdom [is] too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate.

8. Al que piensa en hacer mal, se le llama maestro en intrigas.

8. He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person.

9. La necedad sólo maquina pecados, el arrogante es abominable a los hombres.

9. The thought of foolishness [is] sin: and the scorner [is] an abomination to men.

10. Si te dejas abatir el día de la angustia, angosta es tu fuerza.

10. [If] thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength [is] small.

11. Libra a los que son llevados a la muerte, y a los conducidos al suplicio ¡si los puedieras retener!

11. If thou forbear to deliver [them that are] drawn unto death, and [those that are] ready to be slain;

12. Si dices: «Mira que no lo sabíamos», ¿acaso el que pesa los corazones no comprende? ¿el que vigila tu alma, no lo sabe? El da a cada hombre según sus obras.

12. If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider [it]? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth [not] he know [it]? and shall [not] he render to [every] man according to his works?

13. Come miel, hijo mío, porque es buena. Panal de miel es dulce a tu paladar.

13. My son, eat thou honey, because [it is] good; and the honeycomb, [which is] sweet to thy taste:

14. Pues sábete que así será la sabiduría para tu alma, y si la hallas, hay un mañana, y tu esperanza no será aniquilada.

14. So [shall] the knowledge of wisdom [be] unto thy soul: when thou hast found [it], then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.

15. No pongas, malvado, asechanzas en la mansión del justo, no hagas violencia a su morada.

15. Lay not wait, O wicked [man], against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place:

16. Que siete veces cae el justo, pero se levanta, mientras los malos se hunden en la desgracia.

16. For a just [man] falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

17. No te alegres por la caída de tu enemigo, no se goce tu corazón cuando se hunde;

17. Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth:

18. no sea que lo vea Yahveh y le desagrade, y aparte de él su ira.

18. Lest the LORD see [it], and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.

19. No te enfurezcas por causa de los malvados, ni tengas envidia de los malos.

19. Fret not thyself because of evil [men], neither be thou envious at the wicked;

20. Porque para el malvado no hay un mañana: la lámpara de los malos se extinguirá.

20. For there shall be no reward to the evil [man]; the candle of the wicked shall be put out.

21. Teme, hijo mío, a Yahveh y al rey, no te relaciones con los innovadores,

21. My son, fear thou the LORD and the king: [and] meddle not with them that are given to change:

22. porque al instante surgirá su calamidad, y ¿quién sabe el castigo que pueden ambos dar?

22. For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both?

23. También esto pertenece a los sabios: Hacer acepción de personas en el juicio no está bien.

23. These [things] also [belong] to the wise. [It is] not good to have respect of persons in judgment.

24. Al que dice al malo: «Eres justo», le maldicen los pueblos y le detestan las naciones;

24. He that saith unto the wicked, Thou [art] righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him:

25. los que los castigan, viven felices, y viene sobre ellos la bendición del bien.

25. But to them that rebuke [him] shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them.

26. Besa en los labios, el que responde con franqueza.

26. [Every man] shall kiss [his] lips that giveth a right answer.

27. Ordena tus trabajos de fuera y prepara tus faenas en el campo; y después puedes construirte tu casa.

27. Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.

28. No des testimonio, en vano, contra tu prójimo, ni engañes con tus labios.

28. Be not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and deceive [not] with thy lips.

29. No digas: «Como él me ha hecho a mí, le haré yo a él, daré a cada uno según sus obras.»

29. Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.

30. He pasado junto al campo de un perezoso, y junto a la viña de un hombre insensato,

30. I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

31. y estaba todo invadido de ortigas, los cardos cubrían el suelo, la cerca de piedras estaba derruída.

31. And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, [and] nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.

32. Al verlo, medité en mi corazón, al contemplarlo aprendí la lección:

32. Then I saw, [and] considered [it] well: I looked upon [it, and] received instruction.

33. «Un poco dormir, otro poco dormitar, otro poco tumbarse con los brazos cruzados

33. [Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

34. y llegará, como vagabundo, tu miseria y como un mendigo tu pobreza.»

34. So shall thy poverty come [as] one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.
