1. et il envoya décapiter Jean dans la prison.

1. At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus

2. et il dit à ses courtisans : " C'est Jean-Baptise ! Il estressuscité des morts : voilà pourquoi le pouvoir thaumaturgique agit en lui. "

2. and said to his servants, "This man is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him."

3. Hérode, en effet, ayant fait arrêter Jean, l'avait chargéde chaînes et jeté en prison, à cause d'Hérodiade, la femme de son frère Philippe,

3. Now Herod had arrested John, bound (him), and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip,

4. car Jean lui disait : " Il ne t'est pas permis de l'avoir (pour femme)."

4. for John had said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."

5. Volontiers il l'eût fait mourir, mais il craignait le peuple,qui le regardait comme un prophète.

5. Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, for they regarded him as a prophet.

6. Or, au jour anniversaire de la naissance d'Hérode, la filled'Hérodiade dansa devant (les convives) et plut à Hérode,

6. But at a birthday celebration for Herod, the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests and delighted Herod

7. qui promit avec serment de lui donner ce qu'elle demanderait.

7. so much that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for.

8. Elle, à l'instigation de sa mère : " Donne-moi, dit-elle,ici, sur un plateau, la tête de Jean le Baptiste. "

8. Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."

9. Le roi fut contristé; mais, à cause des serments etdes convives, il commanda qu'on la (lui) donnât.

9. The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests who were present, he ordered that it be given,

10. and he had John beheaded in the prison.

11. Et la tête, apportée sur un plateau, fut donnéeà la jeune fille, qui la porta à sa mère.

11. His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.

12. Ses disciples vinrent prendre le corps et lui donnèrent lasépulture; puis, ils allèrent informer Jésus.

12. His disciples came and took away the corpse and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.

13. Jésus, l'ayant appris, partit de là dans une barquevers un endroit désert, à l'écart ; les foules, l'ayant su, le suivirent à pied des villes.

13. When Jesus heard of it, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns.

14. Quand il débarqua, il vit une grande foule; il en eut compassion,et il guérit leurs malades.

14. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.

15. Le soir venu, les disciples s'approchèrent de lui, disant: " Le lieu est désert, et déjà l'heure est avancée; renvoyez [donc] les foules, afin qu'ils aillentdans les bourgs s'acheter des vivres. "

15. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, "This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves."

16. Mais Jésus leur dit : " IIs n'ont pas besoin de s'en aller;donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger. "

16. (Jesus) said to them, "There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves."

17. Ils lui dirent : " Nous n'avons ici que cinq pains et deux poissons."

17. But they said to him, "Five loaves and two fish are all we have here."

18. " Apportes-les-moi, ici, " dit-il.

18. Then he said, "Bring them here to me,"

19. Après avoir fait asseoir les foules sur l'herbe, il pritles cinq pains et les deux poissons, leva les yeux au ciel, prononça la bénédiction, rompitles pains et les donna aux disciples, et les disciples les donnèrent aux foules.

19. and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.

20. Tous mangèrent et furent rassasiés, et l'on emportadouze corbeilles pleines des morceaux qui restèrent.

20. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over --twelve wicker baskets full.

21. Or ceux qui avaient mangé étaient environ cinq millehommes, sans les femmes et les enfants.

21. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.

22. Aussitôt il obligea les disciples à monter dans la barqueet à passer avant lui sur l'autre rive pendant qu'il renverrait les foules.

22. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

23. Quand il eut renvoyé les foules, il monta dans la montagnepour prier à l'écart; et, le soir étant venu, il était là seul.

23. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone.

24. Or, la barque était déjà à plusieursstades de la terre, battue par les vagues, car le vent était contraire.

24. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it.

25. A la quatrième veille de la nuit, il vint vers eux en marchantsur la mer.

25. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea.

26. Les disciples, le voyant marcher sur la mer, furent troubléset dirent : C'est un fantôme ! " et ils poussèrent des cris de frayeur.

26. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. "It is a ghost," they said, and they cried out in fear.

27. Aussitôt Jésus parla, leur disant : " Prenez confiance,c'est moi, ne craignez point. "

27. At once (Jesus) spoke to them, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid."

28. Pierre prenant la parole : " Seigneur, dit-il, si c'est vous, ordonnezque j'aille à vous sur les eaux. "

28. Peter said to him in reply, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water."

29. Il lui dit : " Viens ! " et Pierre, étant sorti de la barque,marcha sur les eaux pour aller à Jésus.

29. He said, "Come." Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.

30. Mais, voyant la violence du vent, il eut peur, et comme il commençaità enfoncer, il s'écria : " Seigneur, sauvez-moi ! "

30. But when he saw how (strong) the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"

31. Aussitôt Jésus étendit la main, le saisit etlui dit : " Homme de peu de foi, pourquoi as-tu douté? "

31. Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"

32. Et lorsqu'ils furent montés dans la barque, le vent tomba.

32. After they got into the boat, the wind died down.

33. Alors ceux qui étaient dans la barque se prosternèrentdevant lui, disant : " Vous êtes vraiment le Fils de Dieu. "

33. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, "Truly, you are the Son of God."

34. Ayant traversé, ils abordèrent à Génésareth.

34. After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.

35. Les gens de cet endroit, l'ayant reconnu, envoyèrent danstous les environs, et on lui amena tous les malades.

35. When the men of that place recognized him, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought to him all those who were sick

36. Et ils le priaient de leur laisser seulement toucher la houppe deson manteau, et tous ceux qui touchèrent furent guéris.

36. and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak, and as many as touched it were healed.
