1. Qui touche à la poix se souille, et qui se lie avec l'orgueilleux lui devient semblable.

1. He who touches pitch blackens his hand; he who associates with an impious man learns his ways.

2. Ne mets pas sur tes épaules un lourd fardeau, et ne te lie pas avec un homme plus fort et plus riche que toi. Quelle association peut-il y avoir entre le pot de terre et le chaudron? Le chaudron heurtera le pot, et celui-ce sera brisé.

2. Bear no burden too heavy for you; go with no one greater or wealthier than yourself. How can the earthen pot go with the metal cauldron? When they knock together, the pot will be smashed:

3. Le riche commet une injustice, et il frémit d'indignation; le pauvre est maltraité, et il demande excuse.

3. The rich man does wrong and boasts of it, the poor man is wronged and begs forgiveness.

4. Tant que tu pourras lui être utile, il se servira de toi, et quand tu n'auras plus rien, il te délaissera.

4. As long as the rich man can use you he will enslave you, but when you are exhausted, he will abandon you.

5. Si tu as du bien, il vivra avec toi, il te dépouillera, et n'aura nul souci.

5. As long as you have anything he will speak fair words to you, and with smiles he will win your confidence;

6. Lui es-tu nécessaire? il t'enjôlera, il te sourira et te donnera des espérances, il te dira de belles paroles et te dira : « De quoi as-tu besoin? »

6. When he needs something from you he will cajole you, then without regret he will impoverish you.

7. Il te rendra confus par ses festins, jusqu'à ce qu'il t'ait dépouillé deux ou trois fois, après quoi, il te verra et te délaissera, et secouera la tête devant toi.

7. While it serves his purpose he will beguile you, then twice or three times he will terrify you; When later he sees you he will pass you by, and shake his head over you.

8. Prends garde de te laisser séduire, et, au sein de la prospérité, de tomber dans l'humiliation.

8. Guard against being presumptuous; be not as those who lack sense.

9. Si un puissant t'appelle, retire-toi en arrière; il ne fera que t'inviter avec plus d'instances.

9. When invited by a man of influence, keep your distance; then he will urge you all the more.

10. Ne tombe pas sur lui à l'improviste, de peur d'être repoussé, et ne te tiens pas trop loin de lui, de peur d'être oublié.

10. Be not bold with him lest you be rebuffed, but keep not too far away lest you be forgotten.

11. Ne t'imagine pas de causer avec lui d'égal à égal, et ne te fie pas à ses nombreux discours.

11. Engage not freely in discussion with him, trust not his many words; For by prolonged talk he will test you, and though smiling he will probe you.

12. Car par son flux de paroles il te tentera, et il t'interrogera comme en souriant. Homme sans pitié, il ne gardera pas pour lui tes paroles, et il ne t'épargnera ni les coups ni les chaînes.

12. Mercilessly he will make of you a laughingstock, and will not refrain from injury or chains.

13. Prends garde et fais bien attention, car tu marches avec ta ruine.

13. Be on your guard and take care never to accompany men of violence.

14. Toute créature vivante aime son semblable, et tout homme son prochain.

14. Every living thing loves its own kind, every man a man like himself.

15. Toute chair s'unit selon son espèce, et tout homme s'associe à son semblable.

15. Every being is drawn to its own kind; with his own kind every man associates.

16. Quelle union peut-il y avoir entre le loup et l'agneau? Il en est de même entre le pécheur et l'homme pieux.

16. Is a wolf ever allied with a lamb? So it is with the sinner and the just.

17. Quelle paix peut avoir l'hyène avec le chien? Quelle paix le riche avec le pauvre?

17. Can there be peace between the hyena and the dog? Or between the rich and the poor can there be peace?

18. Les onagres sont la proie des lions dans le désert; ainsi les pauvres sont la proie des riches.

18. Lion's prey are the wild asses of the desert; so too the poor are feeding grounds for the rich.

19. L'orgueilleux a en horreur l'humiliation : ainsi le riche a en horreur le pauvre.

19. A proud man abhors lowliness; so does the rich man abhor the poor.

20. Le riche vient-il à chanceler, ses amis le soutiennent; mais quand l'humble tombe, il est encore repoussé par ses amis.

20. When a rich man stumbles he is supported by a friend; when a poor man trips he is pushed down by a friend.

21. Quand le riche fait une chute, beaucoup lui viennent en aide; il tient des discours insensés, et on l'approuve. Quand l'humble fait une chute, il a encore des reproches.

21. Many are the supporters for a rich man when he speaks; though what he says is odious, it wins approval. When a poor man speaks they make sport of him; he speaks wisely and no attention is paid him.

22. Le riche parle, et tout le monde se tait; et on élève son discours jusqu'aux nues. Le pauvre parle, et l'on dit : « Quel est celui-là? » et, s'il heurte, on le culbute.

22. A rich man speaks and all are silent, his wisdom they extol to the clouds. A poor man speaks and they say: "Who is that?" If he slips they cast him down.

23. La richesse est bonne quand elle n'est pas unie au péché, et la pauvreté est mauvaise dans la bouche de l'impie.

23. Wealth is good when there is no sin; but poverty is evil by the standards of the proud.

24. Le c?ur de l'homme change son visage, soit en bien, soit en mal.

24. The heart of a man changes his countenance, either for good or for evil.

25. Le signe d'un c?ur content est un visage joyeux; pour trouver des sages maximes, il faut le labeur de la réflexion.

25. The sign of a good heart is a cheerful countenance; withdrawn and perplexed is the laborious schemer.
