1 Samuel, 31

1. The Philistines gave battle to Israel, and the Israelites, fleeing from the Philistines, fell and were slaughtered on Mount Gilboa.

1. Als die Philister gegen Israel kämpften, flohen die Israeliten vor ihnen; viele waren gefallen und lagen erschlagen auf dem Gebirge von Gilboa.

2. The Philistines bore down on Saul and his sons, and they killed Jonathan, Abinadab and Malchishua, Saul's sons.

2. Die Philister verfolgten Saul und seine Söhne und erschlugen Sauls Söhne Jonatan, Abinadab und Malkischua.

3. The fighting grew fiercer round Saul; the archers came upon him, and he was severely wounded

3. Um Saul selbst entstand ein schwerer Kampf. Die Bogenschützen hatten ihn getroffen und er war sehr schwer verwundet.

4. by the archers. Saul then said to his armour-bearer, 'Draw your sword and run me through with it; I do not want these uncircumcised men to come and make fun of me.' But his armour-bearer was very much afraid and would not do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.

4. Da sagte Saul zu seinem Waffenträger: Zieh dein Schwert und durchbohre mich damit! Sonst kommen diese Unbeschnittenen, durchbohren mich und treiben ihren Mutwillen mit mir. Der Waffenträger wollte es nicht tun; denn er hatte große Angst. Da nahm Saul selbst das Schwert und stürzte sich hinein.

5. His armour-bearer, seeing that Saul was dead, fell on his sword too and died with him.

5. Als der Waffenträger sah, dass Saul tot war, stürzte auch er sich in sein Schwert und starb zusammen mit Saul.

6. Thus died Saul, his three sons and his armour-bearer, together on the same day.

6. So kamen Saul, seine drei Söhne, sein Waffenträger und alle seine Männer an jenem Tag gemeinsam ums Leben.

7. When the Israelites who were on the other side of the Jordan saw that the Israelites had been routed and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their towns and fled. The Philistines then came and occupied them.

7. Als die Israeliten auf der anderen Seite der Ebene und jenseits des Jordan sahen, dass die Israeliten geflohen und dass Saul und seine Söhne tot waren, verließen sie ihre Städte und flohen. Dann kamen die Philister und besetzten die Städte.

8. When the Philistines came on the following day to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sons lying on Mount Gilboa.

8. Als am nächsten Tag die Philister kamen, um die Erschlagenen auszuplündern, fanden sie Saul und seine drei Söhne, die auf dem Gebirge von Gilboa gefallen waren.

9. They cut off his head and, stripping him of his armour, had these carried round the territory of the Philistines to proclaim the good news to their idols and their people.

9. Sie schlugen ihm den Kopf ab, zogen ihm die Rüstung aus und schickten beides im Land der Philister umher, um ihrem Götzentempel und dem Volk die Siegesnachricht zu übermitteln.

10. They put his armour in the temple of Astarte; and his body they fastened to the walls of Beth-Shean.

10. Die Rüstung Sauls legten sie im Astartetempel nieder; seinen Leichnam aber hefteten sie an die Mauer von Bet-Schean.

11. When the inhabitants of Jabesh in Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,

11. Als die Einwohner von Jabesch-Gilead hörten, was die Philister mit Saul gemacht hatten,

12. the warriors all set out and, having marched all night, took the bodies of Saul and his sons off the walls of Beth-Shean; they brought them to Jabesh and burned them there.

12. brachen alle kriegstüchtigen Männer auf, marschierten die ganze Nacht hindurch und nahmen die Leiche Sauls und die Leichen seiner Söhne von der Mauer von Bet-Schean ab; sie brachten sie nach Jabesch und verbrannten sie dort.

13. They then took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk of Jabesh, and fasted for seven days.

13. Dann nahmen sie die Gebeine, begruben sie unter der Tamariske von Jabesch und fasteten sieben Tage lang.
