Isaiah, 34

1. Come near and listen, you nations, pay attention, you peoples. Let the earth and its contents listen, the world and its entire population.

1. Kommt her, ihr Völker, und hört, / horcht auf, ihr Nationen! Die Erde und alles, was sie erfüllt, / die Welt und alles, was auf ihr sprosst, sollen es hören,

2. For Yahweh is angry with all the nations, enraged with all their hordes. He has vowed them to destruction, handed them over to slaughter.

2. dass der Herr über alle Völker erzürnt ist, / dass er zornig ist auf all ihre Heere. Er hat sie dem Untergang geweiht / und zum Schlachtopfer bestimmt.

3. Their dead will be thrown away, the stench will rise from their corpses, the mountains will run with their blood,

3. Die Erschlagenen wirft man hinaus, / der Gestank ihrer Leichen steigt auf,die Berge triefen von ihrem Blut, /

4. the entire array of heaven will fall apart. The heavens will be rolled up like a scroll and all their array will fade away, as fade the leaves falling from the vine, as fade those falling from the fig tree.

4. alle Hügel zerfließen. Wie eine Buchrolle rollt sich der Himmel zusammen, / sein ganzes Heer welkt dahin, wie Laub am Weinstock verwelkt, / wie Früchte am Feigenbaum schrumpfen.

5. For my sword has drunk deep in the heavens: see how it now falls on Edom, on the people vowed to destruction, to punish them.

5. Am Himmel erscheint das Schwert des Herrn. / Seht her, es fährt auf Edom herab, / auf das Volk, das der Herr im Gericht dem Untergang weiht.

6. Yahweh's sword is gorged with blood, it is greasy with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams. For Yahweh has a sacrifice in Bozrah, a great slaughter in the land of Edom.

6. Das Schwert des Herrn ist voll Blut, / es trieft von Fett, vom Blut der Lämmer und Böcke, / vom Nierenfett der Widder; denn der Herr hält in Bozra ein Opferfest ab, / ein großes Schlachtfest in Edom.

7. The wild oxen will fall with them, the bullocks with the bulls; their land will be drenched with blood and their dust will be greasy with fat.

7. Da fallen die Büffel und Kälber, / die Stiere und Ochsen. Ihr Land wird betrunken vom Blut, / ihr Erdreich ist getränkt von Fett.

8. For this will be Yahweh's day of vengeance, the year of retribution in Zion's lawsuit.

8. Denn der Herr hat einen Tag der Rache bestimmt, / ein Jahr der Vergeltung für den Streit um Zion.

9. Its streams will turn into pitch, its dust into brimstone, its country will turn into blazing pitch.

9. In Edoms Bächen wird das Wasser zu Pech, / sein Boden verwandelt sich in Schwefel, / sein Land wird zu brennendem Pech.

10. Never quenched night or day, its smoke rising for ever, it will lie waste age after age, no one will travel through it for ever and ever.

10. Es erlischt nicht bei Tag und bei Nacht, / der Rauch steigt unaufhörlich empor. Das Land ist für Generationen verödet, / nie mehr zieht jemand hindurch.

11. It will be the haunt of pelican and hedgehog, the owl and the raven will live there; over it Yahweh will stretch the measuring line of chaos and the plumb-line of emptiness.

11. Dohlen und Eulen nehmen es in Besitz, / Käuze und Raben hausen darin. Der Herr spannt die Messschnur «Öde» darüber, / er legt das Senkblei «Leere» an.

12. There will be no more nobles to proclaim the royal authority; there will be an end of all its princes.

12. Die Bocksgeister werden dort ihr Unwesen treiben. / Die Edlen Edoms leben nicht mehr.Man ruft dort keinen König mehr aus, / mit all seinen Fürsten hat es ein Ende.

13. Brambles will grow in its bastions, nettles and thorn-bushes in its fortresses, it will be the lair of jackals, an enclosure for ostriches.

13. An seinen Palästen ranken sich Dornen empor / in den Burgen wachsen Nesseln und Disteln. Das Land wird zu einem Ort für Schakale, / zu einem Platz für die Strauße.

14. Wild cats will meet hyenas there, satyr will call to satyr, there Lilith too will lurk and find somewhere to rest.

14. Wüstenhunde und Hyänen treffen sich hier, / die Bocksgeister begegnen einander. Auch Lilit (das Nachtgespenst) ruht sich dort aus / und findet für sich eine Bleibe.

15. The snake will nest and lay eggs there, will hatch and gather its young into the shade; and there the vultures will assemble, each one with its mate.

15. Der Kauz hat hier sein sicheres Nest, / er legt seine Eier und brütet sie aus. Auch die Geier sammeln sich hier, / einer neben dem andern.

16. Search in Yahweh's book, and read, not one of these will be missing, not one of them lacking a mate; for thus his mouth has ordained it, and his spirit has brought them together.

16. Forscht nach im Buch des Herrn, / dort werdet ihr lesen: Keines dieser Tiere ist ausgeblieben, / keines braucht seinen Gefährten zu suchen; denn der Mund des Herrn hat es befohlen, / sein Geist hat sie zusammengeführt.

17. He has thrown the lot for each, his hand has measured out their share; they will possess it for ever, and live there age after age.

17. Er selbst hat für sie das Los geworfen, / er hat mit eigener Hand das Land vermessen und ihnen zugeteilt: Für immer sollen sie es besitzen, / von Generation zu Generation darin wohnen.
