1 Thessalonians, 4

1. Finally, brothers, we urge you and appeal to you in the Lord Jesus; we instructed you how to live in the way that pleases God, and you are so living; but make more progress still.

1. Im Übrigen, Brüder, bitten und ermahnen wir euch im Namen Jesu, des Herrn: Ihr habt von uns gelernt, wie ihr leben müsst, um Gott zu gefallen, und ihr lebt auch so; werdet darin noch vollkommener!

2. You are well aware of the instructions we gave you on the authority of the Lord Jesus.

2. Ihr wisst ja, welche Ermahnungen wir euch im Auftrag Jesu, des Herrn, gegeben haben.

3. God wills you all to be holy. He wants you to keep away from sexual immorality,

3. Das ist es, was Gott will: eure Heiligung. Das bedeutet, dass ihr die Unzucht meidet,

4. and each one of you to know how to control his body in a way that is holy and honourable,

4. dass jeder von euch lernt, mit seiner Frau in heiliger und achtungsvoller Weise zu verkehren,

5. not giving way to selfish lust like the nations who do not acknowledge God.

5. nicht in leidenschaftlicher Begierde wie die Heiden, die Gott nicht kennen,

6. He wants nobody at all ever to sin by taking advantage of a brother in these matters; the Lord always pays back sins of that sort, as we told you before emphatically.

6. und dass keiner seine Rechte überschreitet und seinen Bruder bei Geschäften betrügt, denn all das rächt der Herr, wie wir euch schon früher gesagt und bezeugt haben.

7. God called us to be holy, not to be immoral;

7. Denn Gott hat uns nicht dazu berufen, unrein zu leben, sondern heilig zu sein.

8. in other words, anyone who rejects this is rejecting not human authority, but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.

8. Wer das verwirft, der verwirft also nicht Menschen, sondern Gott, der euch seinen Heiligen Geist schenkt.

9. As for brotherly love, there is no need to write to you about that, since you have yourselves learnt from God to love one another,

9. Über die Bruderliebe brauche ich euch nicht zu schreiben; Gott selbst hat euch schon gelehrt, einander zu lieben;

10. and in fact this is how you treat all the brothers throughout the whole of Macedonia. However, we do urge you, brothers, to go on making even greater progress

10. und danach handelt ihr auch an allen Brüdern in ganz Mazedonien. Wir ermuntern euch aber, Brüder, darin noch vollkommener zu werden.

11. and to make a point of living quietly, attending to your own business and earning your living, just as we told you to,

11. Setzt eure Ehre darein, ruhig zu leben, euch um die eigenen Aufgaben zu kümmern und mit euren Händen zu arbeiten, wie wir euch aufgetragen haben.

12. so that you may earn the respect of outsiders and not be dependent on anyone.

12. So sollt ihr vor denen, die nicht zu euch gehören, ein rechtschaffenes Leben führen und auf niemand angewiesen sein.

13. We want you to be quite certain, brothers, about those who have fallen asleep, to make sure that you do not grieve for them, as others do who have no hope.

13. Brüder, wir wollen euch über die Verstorbenen nicht in Unkenntnis lassen, damit ihr nicht trauert wie die anderen, die keine Hoffnung haben.

14. We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and that in the same way God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

14. Wenn Jesus - und das ist unser Glaube - gestorben und auferstanden ist, dann wird Gott durch Jesus auch die Verstorbenen zusammen mit ihm zur Herrlichkeit führen.

15. We can tell you this from the Lord's own teaching, that we who are still alive for the Lord's coming will not have any advantage over those who have fallen asleep.

15. Denn dies sagen wir euch nach einem Wort des Herrn: Wir, die Lebenden, die noch übrig sind, wenn der Herr kommt, werden den Verstorbenen nichts voraushaben.

16. At the signal given by the voice of the Archangel and the trumpet of God, the Lord himself will come down from heaven; those who have died in Christ will be the first to rise,

16. Denn der Herr selbst wird vom Himmel herabkommen, wenn der Befehl ergeht, der Erzengel ruft und die Posaune Gottes erschallt. Zuerst werden die in Christus Verstorbenen auferstehen;

17. and only after that shall we who remain alive be taken up in the clouds, together with them, to meet the Lord in the air. This is the way we shall be with the Lord for ever.

17. dann werden wir, die Lebenden, die noch übrig sind, zugleich mit ihnen auf den Wolken in die Luft entrückt, dem Herrn entgegen. Dann werden wir immer beim Herrn sein.

18. With such thoughts as these, then, you should encourage one another.

18. Tröstet also einander mit diesen Worten!
