I Macabeus, 16

1. Tendo João ido de Gazara, contou a seu pai tudo o que Cendebeu estava a fazer.

1. John then went up from Gezer and reported to his father Simon what Cendebaeus was busy doing.

2. Simão mandou vir os seus dois filhos mais velhos, Judas e João, e disse-lhes: Eu, meus Irmãos e a casa de meu pai, temos resistido aos inimigos de Israel, desde a nossa mocidade até ao dia de hoje, e conseguimos, muitas vezes, livrar Israel.

2. At this, Simon summoned his two elder sons, Judas and John, and said to them, 'My brothers and I, and my father's House, have fought the enemies of Israel from our youth until today, and many a time we have been successful in rescuing Israel.

3. Agora, porém, estou velho, mas vós graças a Deus, já tendes a idade necessária: tomai o meu lugar e o de meu irmão, e ide pelejar pelo nosso povo. O socorro do céu seja convosco.

3. But now I am an old man, while you, by the mercy of Heaven, are the right age; take the place of my brother and myself, go out and fight for our nation, and may Heaven's aid be with you.'

4. Depois disto escolheu (João) de todo o país vinte mil homens de guerra e cavaleiros, os quais marcharam contra Cendebeu e pernoitaram em Modin.

4. He then selected twenty thousand of the country's fighting men and cavalry, and these marched against Cendebaeus, spending the night at Modein.

5. Levantaram-se ao romper da manhã e marcharam para o campo. E eis que vinha ao seu encontro um grosso exército de infantaria e cavalaria. Separava-os uma torrente.

5. Making an early start, they marched into the plain, to find a large army opposing them, both infantry and cavalry; there was, however, a stream-bed in between.

6. (João) avançou com as suas tropas para os atacar, mas, vendo que elas estavam receosas de passar a torrente, passou-a ele primeiro; quando os outros o viram passar, logo passaram atrás dele.

6. John drew up facing them, he and his army and, seeing that the men were afraid to cross the stream-bed, crossed over first himself. When his men saw this, they too crossed after him.

7. Dividiu a sua gente, colocando cavalaria no meio da infantaria, porque a cavalaria dos inimigos era muito numerosa.

7. He divided his army into two, with the cavalry in the centre and the infantry on either flank, as the opposing cavalry was very numerous.

8. Fizeram soar as trombetas sagradas, e Cendebeu foi derrotado com as suas tropas; caíram feridos muitos deles, e o resto refugiou-se na fortaleza.

8. The trumpets rang out; Cendebaeus and his army were put to flight, many of them falling mortally wounded and the rest of them fleeing to the fortress.

9. Nesta ocasião foi ferido Judas, irmão de João; porém João perseguiu os inimigos até chegar a Cedron, que (Cendebeu) tinha edificado.

9. Then it was that Judas, John's brother, was wounded, but John pursued them until Cendebaeus reached Kedron, which he had rebuilt.

10. Muitos fugiram para as torres que havia na campina de Azot, mas João fê-las queimar. Morreram deles dois mil homens, e João voltou para a Judeia.

10. Their flight took them as far as the towers in the countryside of Azotus, and John burnt these down. The enemy losses amounted to ten thousand men; John returned safely to Judaea.

11. Ptolomeu, filho de Abobo, havia sido feito governador militar da planície de Jericó; tinha muita prata e muito ouro,

11. Ptolemy son of Abubos had been appointed general in command of the Plain of Jericho; he owned a great deal of silver and gold,

12. porque era genro do sumo sacerdote.

12. and was the high priest's son-in-law.

13. O seu coração encheu-se de soberba; queria tornar-se senhor do país e andava maquinando uma traição contra Simão e seus filhos para os matar.

13. His ambition was fired; he hoped to make himself master of the whole country and therefore treacherously began to plot the destruction of Simon and his sons.

14. Ora, percorrendo Simão as cidades da Judeia e tratando cuidadosamente do seu bem-estar. baixou a Jericó com Matatias, seu filho, e Judas, no ano cento e setenta e sete, no undécimo mês, que é o mês de Sabat. (ver nota)

14. Simon, who was inspecting the towns up and down the country and attending to their administration, had come down to Jericho with his sons Mattathias and Judas, in the year 172, in the eleventh month, the month of Shebat.

15. O filho de Abobo recebeu-os com má tenção num pequeno forte, chamado Doc, que tinha edificado; mandou-lhes fazer um grande banquete, mas pôs alguns homens escondidos.

15. The son of Abubos lured them into a small fortress called Dok, which he had built, where he offered them a great banquet, having previously hidden men in the place.

16. Quando Simão e seus filhos tinham bebido bem, Ptolomeu e os seus homens levantaram-se, tomaram as suas armas, acometeram Simão na sala do banquete e mataram-no, assim como aos seus dois filhos e a alguns dos seus criados.

16. When Simon and his sons were drunk, Ptolemy and his men reached for their weapons, rushed on Simon in the banqueting hall and killed him with his two sons and some of his servants.

17. Deste modo cometeu Ptolomeu em Israel uma grande perfídia e tornou mal por bem.

17. He thus committed a great act of treachery and rendered evil for good.

18. Ptolomeu escreveu isto ao rei, pedindo-lhe que lhe enviasse um exército em seu socorro, a fim de lhe entregar o país e as suas cidades.

18. Ptolemy wrote a report of the affair and sent it to the king, in the expectation of being sent reinforcements and of having the cities and the province made over to him.

19. Ao mesmo tempo mandou outros a Gazara, para matarem João, e enviou cartas aos tribunos para que viessem unir-se com ele, prometendo que lhes daria prata, ouro e presentes.

19. He also sent people to Gezer to murder John, and sent written orders to the military commanders to come to him so that he could give them silver, gold and presents;

20. E mandou outros para que se apoderassem de Jerusalém e do monte do templo.

20. and he also sent others to seize control of Jerusalem and the Temple mount.

21. Mas, antecipando-se a eles certo homem, foi anunciar a João, em Gazara. que seu pai e seus irmãos tinham Sido mortos e que (Ptolomeu) enviara gente para o matar também a ele.

21. But someone had been too quick for him and had already informed John in Gezer that his father and brothers had perished, adding, 'He is sending someone to kill you too!'

22. João, logo que ouviu isto, ficou fora de si. Apoderou-se dos que vinham matá-lo, e mandou-lhes tirar a vida, porque sabia que traziam tenção de o matar.

22. Overcome as John was by the news, he arrested the men who had come to kill him and put them to death, being forewarned of their murderous design.

23. O resto dos actos de João, das suas guerras, das empresas em que valorosamente se portou, da reedificação dos muros que construiu e de todas as suas acções,

23. The rest of John's acts, the battles he fought and the exploits he performed, the city walls he built, and all his other achievements,

24. tudo está escrito no livro dos anais do seu pontificado, começando desde o tempo em que foi constituído sumo pontífice, em lugar de seu pai.

24. from the day he succeeded his father as high priest, are recorded in the annals of his pontificate.
