I Macabeus, 10
1. No ano cento e sessenta, Alexandre, filho de Antíoco, cognominado Epífanes, marchou e ocupou a Ptolemaida; foi bem recebido e reinou ali.
1. In the year 160, Alexander, son of Antiochus Epiphanes, raised an army and occupied Ptolemais. He was well received, and there inaugurated his reign.
2. O rei Demétrio, ao saber disto, levantou um exército muito numeroso e avançou a encontrar-se com ele para lhe dar batalha.
2. On hearing this, King Demetrius assembled a very large army and marched off to do battle with him.
3. Então Demétrio enviou a Jónatas uma carta cheia de expressões de paz, prometendo elevá-lo em dignidade.
3. Demetrius furthermore sent Jonathan a most conciliatory letter, promising to promote him in rank,
4. Antecipemo-nos a fazer a paz com ele, — dizia (Demétrio) consigo — antes que a faça com Alexandre com prejuízo nosso,
4. for, as he said, 'We had better move first to come to terms with these people before he makes common cause with Alexander against us;
5. porque ele (Jónatas) se lembrará de todos os males que lhe fizemos, a ele, a seu irmão e ao seu povo.
5. he will not have forgotten all the wrongs we inflicted on him and his brothers, and on his nation.'
6. (Demétrio) deu-lhe, pois poder de levantar um exército, de fazer armas e de se dizer seu aliado, e mandou que lhe entregassem os reféns detidos na cidadela (de Jerusalém).
6. He even authorised him to raise an army, to manufacture arms, and to describe himself as his ally, and ordered the hostages in the Citadel to be surrendered to him.
7. Foi Jónatas a Jerusalém e leu as cartas, ouvindo-o todo o povo, assim como as tropas que ocupavam a cidadela.
7. Jonathan went straight to Jerusalem and read the letter in the hearing of the whole people and of the men in the Citadel.
8. Estas ficaram tomadas dum grande medo, depois de ouvirem que o rei lhe tinha dado poder de juntar um exército.
8. They were terrified when they heard that the king had given him authority to raise an army.
9. Foram, pois, entregues os reféns a Jónatas, o qual os restituiu aos seus parentes.
9. The men in the Citadel surrendered the hostages to Jonathan, who handed them back to their parents.
10. Jónatas estabeleceu-se em Jerusalém e começou a edificar e a renovar a cidade.
10. Jonathan then took up residence in Jerusalem and began the rebuilding and restoration of the city.
11. Mandou aos operários que levantassem uma muralha de cintura, em pedras de silharia, em volta do monte Sião, para sua fortaleza, e eles assim o fizeram.
11. He ordered those responsible for the work to build the walls and the defences round Mount Zion of squared stone blocks to make them stronger, and this was done.
12. Então os estrangeiros, que estavam nas fortalezas que Báquides tinha edificado, fugiram;
12. The foreigners in the fortresses built by Bacchides abandoned them,
13. cada um deixou o seu lugar e foi para a sua terra.
13. one after another leaving his post to go back to his own country.
14. Ficaram somente em Betsur alguns daqueles que tinham abandonado a lei e os preceitos de Deus, porque esta cidade lhes servia de refúgio.
14. Only at Beth-Zur were a few left of those who had forsaken the Law and the precepts, since this was their refuge.
15. Entretanto o rei Alexandre soube das promessas que Demétrio tinha feito a Jónatas; contaram-lhe também as batalhas e provas de valor, que ele e seus irmãos tinham dado, e os trabalhos suportados.
15. King Alexander heard of all the promises Demetrius had sent to Jonathan, and he was also given an account of the battles and exploits of this man and his brothers and of the hardships they had endured.
16. Disse: Porventura poderemos encontrar um homem como este? Procuremos, pois, fazê-lo nosso amigo e aliado.
16. 'Shall we ever find another man like him?' he exclaimed. 'We must make him our friend and ally!'
17. Escreveu e enviou-lhe uma carta, concebida nestes termos:
17. He therefore wrote him a letter, addressing him in these terms:
18. O rei Alexandre, ao seu irmão Jónatas, saúde.
18. 'King Alexander to his brother Jonathan, greetings.
19. Temos ouvido dizer de ti que és um homem poderoso e apto para seres nosso amigo;
19. 'You have been brought to our notice as a strong man of action and as someone who deserves to be our friend.
20. portanto constituímos-te hoje sumo pontífice da tua nação e damos-te o título de amigo do rei— nessa ocasião mandou-lhe uma veste de púrpura e uma coroa de ouro — para que cuides dos nossos interesses e nos conserves amizade.
20. Accordingly, we have today appointed you high priest of your nation, with the title of "Friend of the King" ' -- he also sent him a purple robe and a golden crown-'and you are to study our interests and maintain friendly relations with us.'
21. No ano cento e sessenta, no sétimo mês, vestiu-se Jónatas da túnica sagrada, no dia da solene festa dos Tabernáculos; e levantou um exército e mandou fazer grande quantidade de armas.
21. Jonathan put on the sacred vestments in the seventh month of the year 160, on the feast of Shelters; he then set about raising troops and manufacturing arms in quantity.
22. Quando Demétrio teve conhecimento destas coisas contristou-se muito e disse:
22. Demetrius was displeased when he heard what had happened.
23. Que proceder foi o nosso, a ponto que Alexandre nos haja precedido em conciliar a amizade dos Judeus para fortificar o seu partido?
23. 'What have we been doing,' he said, 'for Alexander to forestall us in winning the friendship of the Jews and so improving his own position?
24. Escrever-lhes-ei também palavras persuasivas, oferecendo-lhes dignidades e dávidas, para que sejam comigo em minha ajuda.
24. I too shall address an appeal to them, offering them advancement and riches as an inducement to support me.'
25. Escreveu-lhes, pois, nestes termos; o rei Demétrio, à nação dos Judeus, saúde.
25. And he wrote to them as follows: 'King Demetrius to the Jewish nation, greetings.
26. Ouvimos dizer que tendes guardado a aliança que fizestes conosco, que perseverastes firmes na nossa amizade, não vos coligando com os nossos inimigos, e disto nos alegramos.
26. 'We have heard how you have kept your agreement with us and have maintained friendly relations with us and have not gone over to our enemies, and it has given us great satisfaction.
27. Perseverai, agora, como até aqui, em nos conservar a mesma fidelidade; pagar-vos-emos avantajadamente o que fizerdes por nós:
27. If you now continue to keep faith with us, we shall make you a handsome return for what you do on our behalf.
28. libertar-vos-emos de muitos encargos e cumular-vos-emos de obséquios.
28. We shall accord you many exemptions and grant you privileges.
29. Desde agora vos isento, a vós e a todos os Judeus, dos tributos que costumáveis pagar, do imposto do sal e das coroas. À terça parte dos produtos do chão (ver nota)
29. 'Henceforth I release you and exempt all the Jews from the tribute, the salt dues and the crown levies,
30. e à metade dos frutos das árvores, a que tinha direito, a tudo isso desde o dia de hoje em diante renuncio, não querendo que se receba mais do país de Judá, nem das três regiões que lhe foram anexas, tiradas da Samaria e da Galileia. Isto, desde hoje e para sempre.
30. and whereas I am entitled to one-third of the grain and one-half of the fruit of the trees, I release from this levy, from today and for the future, Judaea and the three districts annexed to it from Samaria-Galilee, from this day henceforth in perpetuity.
31. (Quero) também que Jerusalém seja santa e livre com todo o seu território, e que os dízimos e os tributos sejam para ela.
31. Jerusalem will be sacred and exempt, with its territory, from tithes and dues.
32. Igualmente renuncio à posse da fortaleza, que está em Jerusalém, e dou-a ao sumo sacerdote, a fim de que ponha nela os homens que ele mesmo escolher, para que a guardem.
32. I relinquish control of the Citadel in Jerusalem and make it over to the high priest, so that he may man it with a garrison of his own choosing.
33. Dou mais, sem resgate algum, a liberdade a todos os Judeus, que vieram cativos do país de Judá e se encontrarem em todo o meu reino, isentando-os a todos de pagarem tributos por si e também pelos seus gados.
33. Every Jewish person taken from Judaea into captivity in any part of my kingdom I set free without ransom, and decree that all will be exempt from taxes, even on their livestock.
34. (Quero da mesma sorte) que todas as festas solenes, os dias de sábado, as neoménias, as festas decretadas, assim como os três dias antes de cada festa solene e os três depois dela, sejam todos dias de imunidade e de isenção para todos os Judeus que estão no meu reino;
34. All festivals, Sabbaths, New Moons and days of special observance, and the three days before and three days after a festival, will be days of exemption and quittance for all the Jews in my kingdom,
35. (nesses dias) ninguém terá direito de exigir deles coisa alguma, nem de os molestar, seja por que assunto for.
35. and no one will have the right to exact payment from, or to molest, any of them for any matter whatsoever.
36. Também (ordeno) que dos Judeus se alistem nas tropas do rei até trinta mil homens, aos quais se dará o mesmo soido que às demais tropas do rei. Deles se escolherão alguns para serem postos nas grandes fortalezas do rei,
36. 'Jews will be enrolled in the king's forces to the number of thirty thousand men and receive maintenance on the same scale as the rest of the king's forces.
37. e outros serão colocados em lugares de confiança do reino; sejam deles mesmos tirados os seus chefes, e viram conforme as suas leis, como o rei ordenou para o país de Judá
37. Some of them will be stationed in the king's major fortresses, and from among others appointments will be made to positions of trust in the kingdom. Their officers and commanders will be appointed from their own number and will live under their own laws, as the king has prescribed for Judaea.
38. Que as três regiões da Samaria, anexas à Judeia, sejam consideradas como a própria Judeia, de forma que não estejam sujeitas a nenhum outro poder, que não seja o do sumo pontífice.
38. 'As regards the three districts annexed to Judaea from the province of Samaria, these will be integrated into Judaea and considered as coming under one governor, obeying the high priest's authority and no other.
39. Quanto à Ptolemaida e a todo o seu território, faço doação dela ao santuário de Jerusalém, para as despesas necessárias ao culto.
39. Ptolemais and the land thereto pertaining I present to the sanctuary in Jerusalem, to meet the necessary expenses of public worship.
40. Afora isto, darei todos os anos quinze mil siclos de prata, que se tomarão dos direitos reais, nos domínios que me pertencem.
40. And I make a personal grant of fifteen thousand silver shekels annually chargeable to the royal revenue from appropriate places.
41. Tudo aquilo que ultrapasse as despesas feitas nos anos anteriores, será entregue desde hoje para o serviço do templo.
41. And the entire surplus, which has not been paid in by the officials as in previous years, will henceforth be paid over by them for work on the Temple.
42. Além disto, os cinco mil siclos de prata, cobrados todos os anos das rendas do santuário, ser-lhe-ão deixados, porque pertencem aos sacerdotes, que exercem as funções do seu ministério.
42. In addition, the sum of five thousand silver shekels, levied annually on the profits of the sanctuary, as shown in the annual accounts, is also relinquished as the perquisite of the priests who perform the liturgy.
43. Também (quero) que todos aqueles que se refugiarem no templo de Jerusalém, ou dentro da sua cerca, por causa de dívida ao fisco ou por qualquer outro motivo, fiquem imunes, assim como todos os bens que possuem no meu reino!
43. Anyone who takes refuge in the Temple in Jerusalem or any of its precincts, when in debt to the royal exchequer or otherwise, will be discharged in full possession of all the goods he owns in my kingdom.
44. As despesas para edificar ou reparar as obras do santuário serão feitas por conta do rei,
44. As regards the building and restoration of the sanctuary, the expense of the work will be met from the royal exchequer.
45. como também o que se gastar para reedificar os muros de Jerusalém, para fortificar a sua cerca e para fazer muralhas nas cidades da Judeia.
45. The reconstruction of the walls of Jerusalem and the fortification of the perimeter will also be a charge on the royal exchequer, as also the reconstruction of other city walls in Judaea.'
46. Mas Jónatas e o povo, quando ouviram estas propostas (de Demétrio), não as tiveram por sinceras e não as aceitaram, poi-que se lembravam dos grandes males que ele tinha feito a Israel e de quanto os tinha atribulado.
46. When Jonathan and the people heard these proposals, they put no faith in them and refused to accept them, remembering what great wrongs Demetrius had done to Israel and how cruelly he had oppressed them.
47. Declararam-se, pois, a favor de Alexandre, visto ter sido o primeiro que lhes falara de paz e auxiliaram-no sempre dali por diante.
47. They decided in favour of Alexander, since he seemed to offer the better inducements of the two, and they became his constant allies.
48. (Negociado isto) levantou o rei Alexandre um grande exército e marchou com suas tropas contra Demétrio.
48. King Alexander now mustered large forces and advanced against Demetrius.
49. Os dois reis deram batalha, mas o exército de Demétrio fugiu. Alexandre foi em seu alcance e deu sobre ele.
49. The two kings met in battle. Alexander's army was routed, and Demetrius pursued him and defeated his troops.
50. A peleja foi renhida, até que se pôs o sol, e Demétrio foi morto naquele dia.
50. He continued the battle with vigour until sunset. Demetrius himself, however, was killed the same day.
51. Depois destas coisas, Alexandre enviou embaixadores a Ptolomeu, rei do Egipto, encarregados de lhe dizer o seguinte;
51. Alexander sent ambassadors to Ptolemy king of Egypt, with this message:
52. Eis que voltei ao meu reino e me assentei no trono de meus pais, tomei conta do poder, derrotei Demétrio e entrei na posse de meus domínios.
52. 'Since I have returned to my kingdom, have ascended the throne of my ancestors, have gained control by crushing Demetrius, and so recovered our country-
53. Vim com ele às mãos, derrotei-o, a ele e às suas tropas, e assentei-me no trono do seu reino.
53. for I fought him and we crushed both him and his army, and I now occupy his royal throne-
54. Façamos agora amizade um com o outro; (por isso) dá-me a tua filha por mulher, e eu serei teu genro, e, assim a ti como a ela, darei presentes condignos.
54. let us now make a treaty of friendship. Give me your daughter in marriage: as your son-in-law, I shall give you, and her, presents which are worthy of you.'
55. O rei Ptolomeu respondeu-lhe: Venturoso o dia em que tornaste a ocupar a terra de teus pais e te assentaste no trono do seu reino!
55. King Ptolemy replied as follows: 'Happy the day when you returned to the land of your ancestors and ascended their royal throne!
56. Agora te farei o que me pediste por escrito; mas vem ter comigo a Ptolemaida, para que ali nos vejamos, e far-te-ei meu genro, como disseste.
56. I shall at once do for you what your letter proposes; but meet me at Ptolemais, so that we can see one another, and I shall become your father-in-law, as you have asked.'
57. Saiu, pois, Ptolomeu do Egipto, com sua filha Cleópatra, e foi a Ptolemaida, no ano cento e sessenta e dois.
57. Ptolemy left Egypt with his daughter Cleopatra and reached Ptolemais in the year 162.
58. Ali compareceu em sua presença o rei Alexandre, a quem Ptolomeu deu sua filha Cleópatra, e celebrou as núpcias em Ptolemaida com grande magnificência, segundo o costume dos reis.
58. King Alexander went to meet him, and Ptolemy gave him the hand of his daughter Cleopatra and celebrated her wedding in Ptolemais with great magnificence, as kings do.
59. O rei Alexandre escreveu também a Jónatas, para que viesse avistar-se com ele.
59. King Alexander then wrote to Jonathan to come and meet him.
60. Jónatas foi com grande, pompa a Ptolemaida, onde visitou os dois reis, e deu-lhes, assim como aos seus amigos, prata, ouro e muitos presentes, conquistando o seu favor.
60. Jonathan made his way in state to Ptolemais and met the two kings; he gave them and their friends silver and gold, and many gifts, and made a favourable impression on them.
61. Então concertaram-se certos homens perversos de Israel, homens iniquos, para apresentarem uma acusação contra ele, mas o rei não os quis atender.
61. A number of scoundrels, the pest of Israel, combined to denounce him, but the king paid no attention to them.
62. Antes mandou que se tirassem a Jónatas as suas vestes e que o vestissem de púrpura, o que se fez. Depois o rei mandou-o sentar a seu lado
62. In fact, the king commanded that Jonathan should be divested of his own garments and clothed in the purple, which was done.
63. e disse aos grandes da sua corte: Ide com ele pelo meio da cidade e fazei publicar em voz alta que ninguém se atreva a formar contra ele queixa, por título algum, e que ninguém lhe seja molesto por qualquer coisa que for.
63. The king then seated him by his side and said to his officers, 'Escort him into the centre of the city and proclaim that no one is to bring charges against him on any count; no one is to molest him for any reason.'
64. Aqueles que tinham vindo com tenção de o acusar quando o viram públicamente exaltado e vestido de púrpura, fugiram todos.
64. And so, when his accusers saw the honour done him by this proclamation, and Jonathan himself invested in the purple, they all fled.
65. O rei honorificou-o, pô-lo no número dos seus primeiros amigos e constituiu-o general e governador.
65. The king did him the honour of enrolling him among the First Friends, and appointed him commander-in-chief and governor-general.
66. Jónatas voltou para Jerusalém, em paz e com alegria.
66. Jonathan then returned to Jerusalem in peace and gladness.
67. No ano cento e sessenta e cinco, Demétrio, filho de Demétrio, voltou de Creta à terra de seus pais.
67. In the year 165, Demetrius son of Demetrius came from Crete to the land of his ancestors.
68. Logo que o rei Alexandre teve conhecimento disto, incomodou-se muito e partiu para Antioquia.
68. When King Alexander heard of it he was plunged into gloom, and retired to Antioch.
69. O rei Demétrio fez general das suas tropas a Apolónio, que era governador da Celesiria. Este levantou um grande exército e chegou a Jâmnia, donde enviou um mensageiro a Jónatas, sumo sacerdote,
69. Demetrius confirmed Apollonius as governor of Coele-Syria; the latter assembled a large force, encamped at Jamnia and sent the following message to Jonathan the high priest:
70. a dizer: Tu és o único que nos resistes, e, por isso, estou feito um objecto de riso e de opróbrio. Como poderás aguentar-te contra nós nas montanhas?
70. 'You are entirely alone in rising against us, and now I find myself ridiculed and reproached on your account. Why do you use your authority to our disadvantage in the mountains?
71. Se, pois, agora confias nas tuas tropas, desce a nós ao campo, e façamos lá prova das nossas forças, porque o poder das batalhas me acompanha.
71. If you are so confident in your forces, come down now to meet us on the plain and let us take each other's measure there; on my side I have the strength of the towns.
72. Pergunta e saberás quem eu sou e quais os meus aliados. Eles dizem que os vossos pés se não podem manter firmes diante da nossa face, porque teus pais foram postos duas vezes em fuga na sua própria terra.
72. Ask and learn who I am and who the others supporting us are. You will hear that you cannot stand up to us, since your ancestors were twice routed on their own ground,
73. Como poderás tu, pois, agora resistir ao ímpeto da cavalaria e dum tão grande exército, num campo, onde não há nem pedra, nem penedo, nem lugar para fugir?
73. nor will you now be able to withstand the cavalry or so great an army on the plain, where there is neither rock, nor stone, nor refuge of any kind.'
74. Jónatas, quando ouviu estas palavras de Apolónio, ficou muito indignado. Escolheu dez mil homens, partiu de Jerusalém, e Simão, seu irmão, se foi encorporar com ele para o socorrer.
74. On hearing Apollonius' words, Jonathan's spirit was roused; he picked ten thousand men and left Jerusalem, and his brother Simon joined him with reinforcements.
75. Acamparam junto de Jope, mas os da cidade fecharam-lhes as portas, porque dentro de Jope havia uma guarnição de Apolónio. Jónatas combateu-a.
75. He drew up his forces outside Joppa, the citizens having shut him out, since Apollonius had a garrison in Joppa. When they began the attack,
76. Aterrados, os que estavam dentro da cidade abriram as portas, e assim Jónatas apoderou-se de Jope.
76. the citizens took fright and opened the gates, and Jonathan occupied Joppa.
77. Quando ouviu isto, Apolónio fez logo avançar consigo três mil cavaleiros e um exército numeroso.
77. Hearing this, Apollonius marshalled three thousand cavalry and a large army and made his way to Azotus as though intending to march through, while in fact pressing on into the plain, since he had a great number of cavalry on which he was relying.
78. Marchando como quem ia pelo caminho de Azot, para passar adiante, logo de improviso se lançou na campina, porque tinha muita cavalaria e nela se fiava. Seguiu-o Jónatas para Azot, e ali deram batalha um ao outro.
78. Jonathan pursued him as far as Azotus, where the armies joined battle.
79. Apolónio tinha deixado de emboscada mil cavaleiros atrás (para surpreender os Judeus).
79. Now, Apollonius had left a thousand horsemen in concealment behind them.
80. Jónatas teve notícia de que ficava por detrás dele uma emboscada. Os inimigos rodearam o seu arraial, e, desde manhã 'até à tarde, não cessaram de atirar dardos contra a sua gente.
80. Jonathan knew of this enemy position behind him; the horsemen surrounded his army, firing their arrows into his men from morning till evening.
81. O povo permaneceu firme, conforme a ordem que Jónatas lhe tinha dado, enquanto que os cavalos dos inimigos se fatigaram muito.
81. But the troops stood firm, as Jonathan had ordered. Once the cavalry was exhausted,
82. Então Simão fez avançar as suas tropas e atacou a falange, porque a cavalaria estava cansada, de sorte que foram derrotados e fugiram.
82. Simon sent his own troops into attack against the phalanx, which he cut to pieces and routed.
83. Os cavaleiros dispersaram-se pela planície, e os fugitivos acolheram-se em Azot, onde entraram no templo de Dagon, seu ídolo, para ali se porem em segurança.
83. The cavalry scattered over the plain and fled to Azotus, where they took sanctuary in Beth-Dagon, the temple of their idol.
84. Porém Jónatas queimou Azot e as cidades que estavam nos seus contornos tomou os seus despojos e pôs fogo ao templo de Dagon, queimando-o com todos os que nele se tinham refugiado.
84. Jonathan, however, set fire to Azotus and the surrounding towns, plundered them, and burned down the temple of Dagon, with all the fugitives who had crowded into it.
85. Foram perto de oito mil homens os que morreram, entre os passados à espada e os consumidos pelo fogo.
85. The enemy losses, counting those who fell by the sword and those burnt to death, totalled about eight thousand men.
86. Jónatas levantou dali o seu arraial e acampou junto de Ascalon, cujos cidadãos saíram a recebê-lo com grandes honras.
86. Jonathan then left and pitched camp outside Ascalon, where the citizens came out to meet him with great ceremony.
87. Depois Jónatas regressou a Jerusalém com a sua gente carregada de muitos despojos.
87. Jonathan then returned to Jerusalem with his followers, laden with booty.
88. Quando o rei Alexandre soube destes sucessos, elevou ainda Jónatas a maior glória.
88. In the event, when King Alexander heard what had happened, he awarded Jonathan further honours:
89. Mandou-lhe um alfinete de ouro, daqueles que se costumam dar aos parentes do rei, e deu-lhe o domínio de Acaron com todo o território.
89. he sent him the golden brooch, of the kind customarily presented to the King's Cousins, and gave him proprietary rights over Ekron and the land adjoining it.
