1 Maccabées, 9

1. Ayant appris que Nicanor et son armée étaient tombés dans le combat, Démétrius envoya encore une fois Bacchidès et Alcime en Judée, avec l'aile droite de son armée.

1. When Demetrius heard that Nicanor and his army had fallen in battle, he again sent Bacchides and Alcimus into the land of Judah, along with the right wing of his army.

2. Ils prirent la route qui mène à Galgala, et dressèrent leur camp à Masaloth, qui est dans le territoire d'Ar-bèles; ils s'emparèrent de cette ville et tuèrent un grand nombre d'habitants.

2. They took the road to Galilee, and camping opposite the ascent at Arbela, they captured it and killed many people.

3. Le premier mois de l'an cent cinquante-deux, ils rangèrent leurs troupes devant Jérusalem.

3. In the first month of the year one hundred and fifty-two, they encamped against Jerusalem.

4. Puis ils levèrent le camp et allèrent à Bérée avec vingt mille hommes et deux mille cavaliers.

4. Then they set out for Berea with twenty thousand men and two thousand cavalry.

5. Judas avait établi son camp à Eléasa, ayant avec lui trois mille guerriers d'élite.

5. Judas, with three thousand picked men, had camped at Elasa.

6. A la vue du grand nombre d'ennemis, ils furent remplis de frayeur, et beaucoup s'enfuirent secrètement du camp; il n'en resta que huit cents.

6. When his men saw the great number of the troops, they were very much afraid, and many slipped away from the camp, until only eight hundred men remained.

7. Judas vit que son armée s'était déro-bée, et que cependant la bataille était imminente; alors son coeur fut brisé, parce que le temps lui manquait pour rassembler les siens, et il se sentit défaillir.

7. As Judas saw that his army was melting away just when the battle was imminent, he was panic-stricken, because he had no time to gather them together.

8. Cependant il dit à ceux qui lui restaient "Allons, marchons contre nos adver-saires, si toutefois nous pouvons lutter contre eux!"

8. But in spite of his discouragement, he said to those who remained: "Let us go forward to meet our enemies; perhaps we can put up a good fight against them."

9. Mais eux l'en détournaient en disant : "Nous ne le pouvons pas; sauvons maintenant notre vie et retour-nons auprès de nos frères, ensuite nous reviendrons combattre nos ennemis ; mais nous sommes trop peu."

9. They tried to dissuade him, saying: "We certainly cannot. Let us save our lives now, and come back with our kinsmen, and then fight against them. Now we are too few."

10. Judas leur dit "Loin de moi d'agir ainsi, de pren-dre la fuite devant eux ! Si notre heure est venue, mourons bravement pour nos frères et ne laissons pas une tache à notre gloire!"

10. But Judas said: "Far be it from me to do such a thing as to flee from them! If our time has come, let us die bravely for our kinsmen and not leave a stain upon our glory!"

11. L'armée syrienne sortit du camp, Il s'avançant à leur rencontre; les cavaliers étaient partagés en deux corps, les frondeurs et les archers marchaient en tête, les plus vaillants au premier rang.

11. Then the army of Bacchides moved out of camp and took its position for combat. The cavalry were divided into two squadrons, and the slingers and the archers came on ahead of the army, and all the valiant men were in the front line.

12. Bacchidès était à l'aide droite, et la phalange s'avançait des deux côtés, au son de la trompette.

12. Bacchides was on the right wing. Flanked by the two squadrons, the phalanx attacked as they blew their trumpets. Those who were on Judas' side also blew their trumpets.

13. Ceux du côté de Judas sonnèrent aussi de la trompette et la terre était ébranlée du bruit des deux armées. Le combat s'engagea et dura du matin jusqu'au soir.

13. The earth shook with the noise of the armies, and the battle raged from morning until evening.

14. Judas, voyant que Bacchidès et ses meilleures troupes étaient à l'aile droite, rassembla autour de lui tous les hommes de coeur,

14. Seeing that Bacchides was on the right, with the main force of his army, Judas, with all the most stouthearted rallying to him,

15. battit l'aile droite des Syriens et la poursuivit jusqu'à la montagne d'Azot.

15. drove back the right wing and pursued them as far as the mountain slopes.

16. Mais ceux qui étaient à l'aile gauche, s'apercevant que l'aile droite était battue, firent volte--face et suivirent par derrière Judas et les siens;

16. But when the men on the left wing saw that the right wing was driven back, they turned and followed Judas and his men, taking them in the rear.

17. la lutte devint acharnée, et il y eut de part et d'autre un grand nombre de morts.

17. The battle was fought desperately, and many on both sides fell wounded.

18. Judas tomba aussi, et ses compagnons prirent la fuite.

18. Then Judas fell, and the rest fled.

19. Jonathas et Simon emportèrent Judas, leur frère, et ils l'ensevelirent dans le sépulcre de leurs pères, à Modin.

19. Jonathan and Simon took their brother Judas and buried him in the tomb of their fathers at Modein.

20. Là tout Israël le pleura et fit entendre sur lui de grandes lamentations; on mena le deuil pendant plusieurs jours,

20. All Israel bewailed him in great grief. They mourned for him many days, and they said,

21. et l'on disait : "Comment est-il tombé le héros, celui qui sauvait Israël !"

21. "How the mighty one has fallen, the savior of Israel!"

22. Le reste de l'histoire de Judas, ses autres guerres, les autres exploits qu'il accomplit, et ses titres de gloire n'ont pas été écrits; car ils sont très nom-breux.

22. The other acts of Judas, his battles, the brave deeds he performed, and his greatness have not been recorded; but they were very many.

23. Après la mort de Judas, les impies se montrèrent dans tout le territoire d' Israël, et tous ceux qui commettent l'iniquité levèrent la tête.

23. After the death of Judas, the transgressors of the law raised their heads in every part of Israel, and all kinds of evildoers appeared.

24. En ces jours-là, survint une très grande famine, et le sol lui même fut infidèle avec eux.

24. In those days there was a very great famine, and the country deserted to them.

25. Bacchidès choisit les hommes impies et les établit pour administrer le pays.

25. Bacchides chose impious men and made them masters of the country.

26. Ils recherchaient les amis de Judas et, quand ils en avaient trouvé, ils les amenaient à Bacchidès, qui les punissait et les tour-nait en dérision.

26. These sought out and hunted down the friends of Judas and brought them to Bacchides, who punished and derided them.

27. Et Israël fut affligé d'une grande tribulation, telle qu'il n'y en avait pas eu de pareille depuis le jour où il ne parut plus de prophète en Israël.

27. There had not been such great distress in Israel since the time prophets ceased to appear among the people.

28. Alors tous les amis de Judas s'assemblèrent et dirent à Jonathas :

28. Then all the friends of Judas came together and said to Jonathan:

29. "Depuis que ton frère Judas est mort, il ne se trouve plus d'homme semblable à lui pour marcher contre nos ennemis, Bacchidés et tous ceux qui haïssent notre nation.

29. "Since your brother Judas died, there has been no one like him to oppose our enemies, Bacchides and those who are hostile to our nation.

30. Nous te choisissons donc aujourd'hui pour être notre chef à sa place, et pour nous commander dans nos combats."

30. Now therefore we have chosen you today to be our ruler and leader in his place, and to fight our battle."

31. Jonathas reçut donc en ce temps-là le commandement, et il se leva à la place de Judas, son frère.

31. From that moment Jonathan accepted the leadership, and took the place of Judas his brother.

32. Dès que Bacchidés eut appris l'élec-tion de Jonathas, il chercha à le faire périr.

32. When Bacchides learned of it, he sought to kill him.

33. Informés de ce dessein, Jonathas, son frère Simon et tous ceux qui étaient avec lui s'enfuirent au désert de Thécué, et ils s'établirent près des eaux de la citerne Asphar.

33. But Jonathan and his brother Simon and all the men with him discovered this, and they fled to the desert of Tekoa and camped by the waters of the pool of Asphar.

34. -- Bacchidés en eut connaissance le jour du sabbat, et il se rendit lui-même avec toute son armée au-delà du Jourdain --.

34. .

35. Jonathas envoya son frère Jean, comme chef du peuple, chez les Nabatéens, ses amis, les priant de leur permettre de dé-poser chez eux ses bagages, qui étaient considérables.

35. Jonathan sent his brother as leader of the convoy to ask permission of his friends, the Nabateans, to deposit with them their great quantity of baggage.

36. Mais les fils de Jambri, étant sortis de Madaba, se saisirent de Jean et de tous ses bagages, et s'en allèrent avec tout ce butin.

36. But the sons of Jambri from Medaba made a raid and seized and carried off John and everything he had.

37. Quelque temps après, on vint annoncer à Jona-thas et à son frère Simon que les fils de Jambri célébraient une noce solennelle et qu'ils amenaient de Nadabat en grande pompe la fiancée, fille d'un des puissants princes de Chanaan.

37. After this, word was brought to Jonathan and his brother Simon: "The sons of Jambri are celebrating a great wedding, and with a large escort they are bringing the bride, the daughter of one of the great princes of Canaan, from Nadabath."

38. Alors, se souvenant de leur frère jean, ils montèrent et se cachèrent à l'abri de la montagne.

38. Remembering the blood of John their brother, they went up and hid themselves under cover of the mountain.

39. Levant les yeux, ils observaient, et voici qu'un grand bruit se fit entendre et que parut un nombreux convoi; l'époux, accompagné de ses frères et de ses amis, s'avançait à leur rencontre, avec des tambourins, des instruments de musique et un attirail considérable.

39. They watched, and suddenly saw a noisy crowd with baggage; the bridegroom and his friends and kinsmen had come out to meet the bride's party with tambourines and musicians and much equipment.

40. A cette vue, les compagnons de Jonathas se levèrent de leur embuscade et se précipitèrent sur eux pour les massacrer; un grand nombre tombèrent sous leurs coups, le reste s'en-fuit dans les montagnes, et les Juifs s'emparèrent de leurs dépouilles.

40. The Jews rose up against them from their ambush and killed them. Many fell wounded, and after the survivors fled toward the mountain, all their spoils were taken.

41. Ainsi les noces se changèrent en deuil, et les sons joveux de leur musique en lamentation.

41. Thus the wedding was turned into mourning, and the sound of music into lamentation.

42. Après avoir ainsi vengé le meurtre de leur frère, Jonathas et Simon se retirèrent vers les marais du Jourdain.

42. Having taken their revenge for the blood of their brother, the Jews returned to the marshes of the Jordan.

43. Bacchidès en fut instruit, et il vint le jour du sabbat jusqu'aux berges du Jourdain, avec une puissante armée.

43. When Bacchides heard of it, he came on the sabbath to the banks of the Jordan with a large force.

44. Alors Jonathas dit à ses compagnons : "Levons-nous maintenant, et combat-tons pour notre vie ! Car il n'en est pas aujourd'hui comme hier et avant-hier.

44. Then Jonathan said to his companions, "Let us get up now and fight for our lives, for today is not like yesterday and the day before.

45. Voici l'ennemi en armes devant nous et derrière nous, et de tous côtés l'eau du Jourdain, un marais et un bois ; nul moyen d'échapper.

45. The battle is before us, and behind us are the waters of the Jordan on one side, marsh and thickets on the other, and there is no way of escape.

46. Maintenant donc criez vers le ciel, afin que vous soyez sauvés de la main de vos ennemis."

46. Cry out now to Heaven for deliverance from our enemies."

47. Le combat s'engagea. Jonathas étendit la main pour frapper Bacchidés, mais ce-lui-ci, pour l'éviter, se rejeta en arrière.

47. When they joined battle, Jonathan raised his arm to strike Bacchides, but Bacchides backed away from him.

48. Alors Jonathas sauta dans le Jourdain, avec ses compagnons; ils le passèrent à la nage, et les Syriens ne le passèrent point pour les poursuivre.

48. Jonathan and his men jumped into the Jordan and swam across to the other side, but the enemy did not pursue them across the Jordan.

49. Il périt ce jour-là mille hommes du côté de Bac-chidés.

49. A thousand men on Bacchides' side fell that day.

50. Celui-ci retourna à Jérusalem, et bâtit des villes fortes dans la Judée, la for-teresse prés de Jéricho, Emmaüs, Bétho-ron, Béthel, Thamnatha, Phara et Téphon, avec de hautes murailles, des portes et des verrous,

50. On returning to Jerusalem, Bacchides built strongholds in Judea: the Jericho fortress, as well as Emmaus, Beth-horon, Bethel, Timnath, Pharathon, and Tephon, with high walls and gates and bars.

51. et il y mit des garnisons pour exercer les hostilités contre Israël.

51. In each he put a garrison to oppose Israel.

52. Il fortifia la ville de Bethsur, Gazara et la citadelle, et il y mit des troupes et des dépôts de vivres.

52. He fortified the city of Beth-zur, Gazara and the citadel, and put soldiers in them and stores of provisions.

53. Il prit pour otages les fils des principaux du pays, et les retint prisonniers dans la citadelle de Jérusalem.

53. He took as hostages the sons of the leaders of the country and put them in custody in the citadel at Jerusalem.

54. L'an cent cinquante-trois, au deuxième mois, Alcime commanda d'abattre les murs du parvis intérieur du sanctuaire, détruisant ainsi l'oeuvre des prophètes, et il commença à les démolir.

54. In the year one hundred and fifty-three, in the second month, Alcimus ordered the wall of the inner court of the sanctuary to be torn down, thus destroying the work of the prophets. But he only began to tear it down.

55. En ce temps-là, Alcime fut frappé de Dieu, et ses entreprises furent arrêtées; sa bou-che se ferma; atteint de paralysie, il ne put plus prononcer une seule parole, ni donner aucun ordre au sujet des affaires de sa maison.

55. Just at that time he had a stroke, and his work was interrupted; his mouth was closed and he was paralyzed, so that he could no longer utter a word to give orders concerning his house.

56. Et Alcime mourut en ce temps-là dans de grandes tortures.

56. Finally he died in great agony.

57. Voyant qu'Alcime était mort, Bacchidès s'en retourna auprès du roi, et le pays de Juda fut en paix pendant deux ans.

57. Seeing that Alcimus was dead, Bacchides returned to the king, and the land of Judah was quiet for two years. Bacchides and Jonathan

58. Alors tous les Juifs infidèles tinrent conseil, en disant : "Voici que Jona-thas et ses compagnons vivent en paix et sécurité; faisons donc venir Bacchidès, et il les prendra tous en une nuit."

58. Then all the transgressors of the law held a council and said: "Jonathan and his companions are living in peace and security. Now then, let us have Bacchides return, and he will capture all of them in a single night."

59. Et ils allèrent s'entendre avec lui.

59. So they went and took counsel with him.

60. Bacchidès se mit en marche à la tête d'une grande armée, et il envoya secrè-tement des lettres à tous ses partisans qui étaient en Judée, pour qu'ils se sai-sissent de Jonathas et de ses compagnons; mais il n'y réussirent pas, parce que ces derniers eurent connaissance de leur dessein.

60. When Bacchides was setting out with a large force, he sent letters secretly to all his allies in Judea, telling them to seize Jonathan and his companions. They were not able to do this, however, because their plot became known.

61. Et parmi les hommes du pays, chefs du complot, ils en prirent cinquante et les tirent périr.

61. In fact, Jonathan's men seized about fifty of the men of the country who were ringleaders in the mischief and put them to death.

62. Puis Jo-nathas, avec Simon et ceux qui étaient avec eux, se rendit à Bethbasi dans le désert, et il en répara les ruines et la fortifia.

62. Then Jonathan and Simon and their companions withdrew to Bethbasi in the desert; they rebuilt and strengthened its fortifications that had been demolished.

63. Bacchidès l'apprit, rassembla toutes ses troupes et fit appel à ses partisan de Judée.

63. When Bacchides learned of this, he gathered together his whole force and sent word to those who were in Judea.

64. Il vint et établit son camp près de Bethbasi; il assiégea cette ville pendant beaucoup de jours et construisit des machines.

64. He came and pitched his camp before Bethbasi, and constructing siege-machines, he fought against it for many days.

65. Mais Jonathas, laissant dans la ville son frère Simon, sortit dans la campagne et revint avec une petite troupe.

65. Leaving his brother Simon in the city, Jonathan, accompanied by a small group of men, went out into the field.

66. Il battit Odoarrès, ainsi que ses frères et les fils de Phaséron dans leurs tentes, et il commença à attaquer les assiégeants et à marcher contre eux avec des forces.

66. He struck down Odomera and his kinsmen and the sons of Phasiron in their encampment; these men had set out to go up to the siege with their forces.

67. Simon, de son côté, fit une sortie avec ses compa-gnons et brida les machines de guerre.

67. Simon and his men then sallied forth from the city and set fire to the machines.

68. Tous deux combattirent contre Bacchidès, le mirent en de route, et le jetèrent dans une profonde affliction de ce que son dessein et son expédition étaient com-plètement manqués.

68. They fought against Bacchides, and he was beaten. This caused him great distress. Because the enterprise he had planned came to nought,

69. Outré de colère contre les hommes impies qui lui avaient conseillé de venir dans le pays, il en fit périr un grand nombre et prit la réso-lution de retourner dans son pays.

69. he was angry with the lawless men who had advised him to invade the province. He killed many of them and resolved to return to his own country.

70. Jonathas le sut, et il lui envoya des mes-sagers pour traiter avec lui de la paix et obtenir qu'on leur rendit les prison-niers.

70. Jonathan learned of this and sent ambassadors to make peace with him and to obtain the release of the prisoners.

71. Bacchidès les accueillit et accepta leurs propositions; il s'engagea par ser-ment envers Jonathas à ne lui faire aucun mal, tant qu'il vivrait.

71. He agreed to do as Jonathan had asked. He swore an oath to him that he would never try to injure him for the rest of his life;

72. Il lui rendit les prisonniers qu'il avait faits aupara-vant dans le pays de Juda, et, s'en étant allé dans son pays, il ne revint plus sur le territoire des Juifs.

72. and he released the prisoners he had previously taken from the land of Judah. He returned to his own country and never came into their territory again.

73. L'épée se reposa dans Israël, et Jonathas fixa sa demeure à Machmas; et il commença à juger le peuple, et il fit disparaître les impies du milieu d'Israël.

73. Then the sword ceased in Israel. Jonathan settled in Michmash; he began to judge the people and he destroyed the impious in Israel.
