1 Maccabées, 6

1. Cependant, le roi Antiochus parcourait les hautes provinces. Ayant appris qu'il y avait en Perse, dans l'Elymaïde, une ville célèbre par ses richesses en argent et en or,

1. As King Antiochus was traversing the inland provinces, he heard that in Persia there was a city called Elymais, famous for its wealth in silver and gold,

2. avec un temple très riche ren-fermant des armures d'or, des cuirasses et d'autres armes qu'y avait laissées Alexandre, fils de Philippe, roi de Macé-doine, qui régna le premier sur les Grecs, il s'y rendit,

2. and that its temple was very rich, containing gold helmets, breastplates, and weapons left there by Alexander, son of Philip, king of Macedon, the first king of the Greeks.

3. et il cherchait à prendre la ville et à la piller; mais il n'y réussit pas, parce que les habitants de la ville eurent connaissance de son dessein.

3. He went therefore and tried to capture and pillage the city. But he could not do so, because his plan became known to the people of the city

4. Ils se levèrent pour le combattre, et il prit la fuite et se retira avec une grande tristesse, pour retourner à Babylone.

4. who rose up in battle against him. So he retreated and in great dismay withdrew from there to return to Babylon.

5. Alors vint de Perse un messager qui lui annonça la défaite des troupes qui étaient entrées dans le pays de Juda :

5. While he was in Persia, a messenger brought him news that the armies sent into the land of Judah had been put to flight;

6. Lysias, s'étant avancé avec une armée très forte, avait dû fuir devant les Juifs, et ceux-ci avaient accru leur puissance en armes, en soldats et en dépouilles enlevées aux armées vaincues;

6. that Lysias had gone at first with a strong army and been driven back by the Israelites; that they had grown strong by reason of the arms, men, and abundant possessions taken from the armies they had destroyed;

7. ils avaient détruit l'abomination élevée par lui sur l'autel qui était à Jérusalem, ils avaient entouré le temple de hautes murailles, comme il était aupa-ravant, et fait de même à Bethsur, une de ses villes.

7. that they had pulled down the Abomination which he had built upon the altar in Jerusalem; and that they had surrounded with high walls both the sanctuary, as it had been before, and his city of Beth-zur.

8. En apprenant ces nouvelles, le roi fut frappé de terreur, un grand trouble le saisit ; il se jeta sur son lit et tomba malade de tristesse, parce que ses désirs ne s'étaient pas réalisés.

8. When the king heard this news, he was struck with fear and very much shaken. Sick with grief because his designs had failed, he took to his bed.

9. Il demeura là pendant plusieurs jours, retombant sans cesse dans sa profonde mélancolie. Lorsqu'il se crut sur le point de mourir, il appela ses amis et leur dit :

9. There he remained many days, overwhelmed with sorrow, for he knew he was going to die.

10. " Le sommeil s'est retiré de mes yeux, et le cha-grin fait défaillir mon coeur.

10. So he called in all his Friends and said to them: "Sleep has departed from my eyes, for my heart is sinking with anxiety.

11. Je me dis : A quel degré d'affliction suis-je arrivé, et dans quel profond abîme suis-je maintenant! Moi qui étais bon et aimé dans mon empire!

11. I said to myself: 'Into what tribulation have I come, and in what floods of sorrow am I now!

12. Mais maintenant, je me souviens des maux que j'ai faits dans Jérusalem; j'ai emporté tous les ustensi-les d'or et d'argent qui s'y trouvaient, et j'ai envoyé une armée pour extermi-ner tous les habitants de la Judée sans motif.

12. Yet I was kindly and beloved in my rule.' But I now recall the evils I did in Jerusalem, when I carried away all the vessels of gold and silver that were in it, and for no cause gave orders that the inhabitants of Judah be destroyed.

13. Je reconnais donc que c'est à cause de cela que ces maux m'ont atteint, et voici que je meurs dans une grande affliction sur une terre étrangère."

13. I know that this is why these evils have overtaken me; and now I am dying, in bitter grief, in a foreign land."

14. Alors il appela Philippe, un de ses amis, et l'établit sur tout son royaume.

14. Then he summoned Philip, one of his Friends, and put him in charge of his whole kingdom.

15. Il lui donna son diadème, sa robe et le sceau royal, le chargeant d'instruire son fils Antiochus et de l'élever pour la royauté.

15. He gave him his crown, his robe, and his signet ring, so that he might guide the king's son Antiochus and bring him up to be king.

16. Et le roi Antiochus mourut en ce lieu, l'an cent quarante-neuf.

16. King Antiochus died in Persia in the year one hundred and forty-nine.

17. Lorsque Lysias eut appris la mort du roi, il établit pour régner à sa place son fils Antiochus. qu'il avait nourri depuis son enfance, et il lui donna le nom d'Eupator.

17. When Lysias learned that the king was dead, he set up the king's son Antiochus, whom he had reared as a child, to be king in his place; and he gave him the title Eupator.

18. La garnison de la citadelle tenait Israël enfermé autour du sanctuaire ; elle cher-chait sans cesse à le molester, et elle était un appui pour les nations.

18. The men in the citadel were hemming in Israel around the sanctuary, continually trying to harm them and to strengthen the Gentiles.

19. Judas résolut de la détruire et rassembla tout le peuple pour l'assiéger.

19. But Judas planned to destroy them, and called all the people together to besiege them.

20. Ils se réuni-rent tous, en firent le siège l'an cent cinquante et construisirent contre elle des tours à balistes et des machines.

20. So in the year one hundred and fifty they assembled and stormed the citadel, for which purpose he constructed catapults and other devices.

21. Mais quelques-uns des assiégés s'échappèrent et plusieurs Israélites impies se joigni-rent à eux.

21. Some of the besieged escaped, joined by impious Israelites;

22. Ils allèrent trouver le roi et lui dirent : "Jusqu'à quand tarderas-tu à nous rendre justice et à venger nos frères?

22. they went to the king and said: "How long will you fail to do justice and avenge our kinsmen?

23. Nous nous sommes mis volontairement au service de ton père, faisant ce qu'il nous disait et exécutant ses ordres.

23. We agreed to serve your father and to follow his orders and obey his edicts.

24. A cause de cela les fils de notre peuple sont devenus nos ennemis ; tous ceux d'entre nous qui sont tombés entre leurs mains ont été massacrés, et ils ont mis au pillage nos héritages.

24. And for this the sons of our people have become our enemies; they have put to death as many of us as they could find and have plundered our estates.

25. Ce n'est pas seulement sur nous qu'ils ont étendu la main, mais sur tous les pays limitrophes.

25. They have acted aggressively not only against us, but throughout their whole territory.

26. Vois, ils sont campés en ce moment devant la citadelle de Jéru-salem pour s'en emparer, et ils ont fortifié le temple et Bethsur.

26. Look! They have now besieged the citadel in Jerusalem in order to capture it, and they have fortified the sanctuary and Beth-zur.

27. Si tu ne te hâtes pas de les prévenir, ils en feront encore plus et tu ne pourras plus les arrêter." 28 Le roi, les ayant entendus, fut pris de colère; il convoqua tous ses amis, les chefs de son armée et ceux qui commandaient la cavalerie.

27. Unless you quickly forestall them, they will do even worse things than these, and you will not be able to stop them."

28.

28. When the king heard this he was angry, and he called together all his Friends, the officers of his army, and the commanders of the cavalry.

29. Il lui vint aussi des troupes mercenaires d'autres royaumes et des îles de la mer.

29. Mercenary forces also came to him from other kingdoms and from the islands of the seas.

30. Son armée comp-tait cent mille fantassins, vingt mille cavaliers et trente-deux éléphants dres-sés à la guerre.

30. His army numbered a hundred thousand foot-soldiers, twenty thousand cavalry, and thirty-two elephants trained for war.

31. Ils s'avancèrent par l'Idumée et établirent leur camp devant Bethsur; ils combattirent longtemps et construisirent des machines; mais les Juifs firent une sortie et les brûlèrent, déployant une grande vaillance.

31. They passed through Idumea and camped before Beth-zur. For many days they attacked it; they constructed siege-devices, but the besieged made a sortie and burned these, and they fought bravely.

32. Alors Judas quitta la citadelle et alla camper à Beth-Zacharia, vis-à-vis du camp du roi.

32. Then Judas marched away from the citadel and moved his camp to Beth-zechariah, on the way to the king's camp.

33. Le roi se leva de grand matin et fit prendre brusquement à son armée le che-min de Beth-Zacharia, et les troupes se disposèrent pour l'attaque et sonnèrent de la trompette.

33. The king, rising before dawn, moved his force hastily along the road to Beth-zechariah; and the armies prepared for battle, while the trumpets sounded.

34. Ils mirent sous les yeux des éléphants du jus de raisin et de mûre, pour les exciter au combat.

34. They showed the elephants the juice of grapes and mulberries to provoke them to fight.

35. Ils distribuèrent ces animaux entre les phalanges; chaque éléphant était accompagné de mille hommes revêtus de cuirasses en mailles de fer, avec un casque d'airain sur la tête, et cinq cents cavaliers d'élite étaient rangés auprès de lui.

35. The beasts were distributed along the phalanxes, each elephant having assigned to it a thousand men in coats of mail, with bronze helmets, and five hundred picked cavalry.

36. Ces derniers, d'avance, étaient partout où était la bête; là où elle allait, ils y allaient, et ils ne la quittaient jamais.

36. These anticipated the beast wherever it was; and wherever it moved, they moved too and never left it.

37. Sur chacun des éléphants s'élevait, pour sa défense, une solide tour de bois attachée autour de lui par des sangles, et chaque animal portait trente-deux hommes de l'armée, combattant sur les tours, en plus de son cornac.

37. A strong wooden tower covering each elephant, and fastened to it by a harness, held, besides the Indian mahout, three soldiers who fought from it.

38. Ils placèrent le reste de la cavalerie sur les deux flancs de l'armée, afin d'inquiéter l'ennemi et de protéger les phalanges.

38. The remaining cavalry were stationed on one or the other of the two flanks of the army, to harass the enemy and to be protected from the phalanxes.

39. Lorsque les rayons du soleil tombèrent sur les boucliers d'or et d'airain, les montagnes resplendirent de leur éclat et brillèrent comme, des lampes de feu.

39. When the sun shone on the gold and bronze shields, the mountains gleamed with their brightness and blazed like flaming torches.

40. Une partie de l'armée du roi se déploya sur les hautes montagnes et l'autre partie dans les vallées, et ils s'avançaient d'un pas assuré et en bon ordre.

40. Part of the king's army extended over the heights, while some were on low ground, but they marched forward steadily and in good order.

41. Tous étaient épouvantés des cris de cette mul-titude, du bruit de leur marche et du fra-cas de leurs armes. C'était en effet une armée extrêmement nombreuse et puis-sante.

41. All who heard the noise of their numbers, the tramp of their marching, and the clashing of the arms, trembled; for the army was very great and strong.

42. Judas s'avança avec son armée pour livrer bataille, et six cents hommes de l'armée du roi tombèrent.

42. Judas with his army advanced to fight, and six hundred men of the king's army fell.

43. Eléazar, surnommé Abaron, aperçut un des éléphants couvert des harnais royaux et dépassant tous les autres en hauteur.

43. Eleazar, called Avaran, saw one of the beasts bigger than any of the others and covered with royal armor, and he thought the king must be on it.

44. S'imaginant que le roi était dessus, il se dévoua pour délivrer son peuple et s'acquérir un nom immortel.

44. So he gave up his life to save his people and win an everlasting name for himself.

45. Il courut hardiment vers lui à travers la phalange, tuant à droite et à gauche, et devant lui les ennemis s'écartaient de part et d'au-tre.

45. He dashed up to it in the middle of the phalanx, killing men right and left, so that they fell back from him on both sides.

46. Alors il se glissa sous l'éléphant, lui enfonça son épée et le tua ; l'éléphant tomba par terre sur lui, et Eléazar mourut là.

46. He ran right under the elephant and stabbed it in the belly, killing it. The beast fell to the ground on top of him, and he died there.

47. Les Juifs, voyant les forces du royaume et l'impétuosité des troupes, se retirèrent devant elles.

47. When the Jews saw the strength of the royal army and the ardor of its forces, they retreated from them.

48. En même temps ceux de l'armée du roi montèrent vers Jérusalem à la rencontre des Juifs, et le roi établit son camp contre la Judée et contre le mont Sion.

48. A part of the king's army went up to Jerusalem to attack them, and the king established camps in Judea and at Mount Zion.

49. Il fit la paix avec ceux qui étaient à Bethsur, et ceux-ci sortirent de la ville, parce qu'il n'y avait pas eu de vivres à renfermer pour eux dans la place, car c'était l'année du repos de la terre.

49. He made peace with the men of Beth-zur, and they evacuated the city, because they had no food there to enable them to stand a siege, for that was a sabbath year in the land.

50. Le roi s'empara ainsi de Bethsur, et il y laissa une garnison pour la garder.

50. The king took Beth-zur and stationed a garrison there to hold it.

51. Il établit son camp de-vant le lieu saint pendant beaucoup de jours, et il y dressa des tours à balistes, des machines de guerre, des catapultes pour lancer des traits enflammés et des pierres, des scorpions pour lancer des flèches, et des frondes.

51. For many days he besieged the sanctuary, setting up artillery and machines, fire-throwers, catapults and mechanical bows for shooting arrows and slingstones.

52. Les assiégés construisirent aussi des machines pour les opposer à celles des assiégeants, et prolongèrent longtemps la résistance.

52. The Jews countered by setting up machines of their own, and kept up the fight a long time.

53. Mais il n'y avait pas de vivres dans les magasins, parce que c'était la septième année, et que les Israélites qui s'étaient réfugiés en Judée devant les nations avaient consommé le reste de ce qu'on avait mis en réserve.

53. But there were no provisions in the storerooms, because it was the seventh year, and the tide-over provisions had been eaten up by those who had been rescued from the Gentiles and brought to Judea.

54. Il ne resta dans le lieu saint qu'un petit nombre de Juifs, car la faim se faisait de plus en plus sen-tir; les autres se dispersèrent chacun chez soi.

54. Few men remained in the sanctuary; the rest scattered, each to his own home, for the famine was too much for them.

55. Cependant Philippe, que le roi Antio-chus encore vivant avait désigné pour élever Antiochus son fils et en faire un roi,

55. Lysias heard that Philip, whom King Antiochus, before his death, had appointed to train his son Antiochus to be king,

56. était revenu de Perse et de Médie, et avec lui les troupes qui avaient accompagné le roi; et il cherchait à pren-dre en main les affaires du royaume.

56. had returned from Persia and Media with the army that accompanied the king, and that he was seeking to take over the government.

57. A cette nouvelle, Lysias n'eut rien de plus pressé que de se retirer; il dit au roi, aux chefs de l'armée et aux troupes: "Nous nous amoindrissons ici de jour en jour; nous n'avons que peu de vivres, et le lieu que nous assiégeons est bien fortifié, et nous avons à nous occuper des affaires de l'Etat.

57. So he hastily resolved to withdraw. He said to the king, the leaders of the army, and the soldiers: "We are grow-ing weaker every day, our provisions are scanty, the place we are besieging is strong, and it is our duty to take care of the affairs of the kingdom.

58. Maintenant donc, tendons la main à ces hommes, et faisons la paix avec eux et avec toute leur na-tion.

58. Therefore let us now come to terms with these men, and make peace with them and all their nation.

59. Reconnaissons-leur le droit de vivre selon leurs lois, comme auparavant; car c'est à cause de ces lois, que nous avons voulu abolir, qu'ils se sont irrités et ont fait tout cela."

59. Let us grant them freedom to live according to their own laws as formerly; it was on account of their laws, which we abolished, that they became angry and did all these things."

60. Ce discours plut au roi et aux chefs, et il envoya vers eux pour traiter de la paix, et ils l'acceptè-rent.

60. The proposal found favor with the king and the leaders;

61. Le roi et les chefs confirmèrent le traité par serment; là-dessus, les assié-gés sortirent de la forteresse.

61. he sent peace terms to the Jews, and they accepted. So the king and the leaders swore an oath to them, and on these terms they evacuated the fortification.

62. Mais le roi ayant pénétré dans l'enceinte du mont Sion et en ayant vu les fortifications, il viola le serment qu'il avait prêté et don-na l'ordre de détruire les murailles tout autour.

62. But when the king entered Mount Zion and saw how the place was fortified, he broke the oath he had sworn and gave orders for the encircling wall to be destroyed.

63. Puis il partit en grande hâte et retourna à Antioche, où il trouva Phi-lippe maître de la ville ; il combattit cou-tre lui et se rendit maître de la ville.

63. Then he departed in haste and returned to Antioch, where he found Philip in possession of the city. He fought against him and took the city by force.
