Romanos, 11

1. Pergunto, então: Acaso rejeitou Deus o seu povo? De maneira alguma. Pois eu mesmo sou israelita, descendente de Abraão, da tribo de Benjamim.

1. Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see: and bow down their back always.

11. Deus não repeliu o seu povo, que ele de antemão distinguiu! Desconheceis o que narra a Escritura, no episódio de Elias, quando este se queixava de Israel a Deus:

11. I say then, have they so stumbled, that they should fall? God forbid. But by their offence, salvation is come to the Gentiles, that they may be emulous of them.

12. Senhor, mataram vossos profetas, destruíram vossos altares. Fiquei apenas eu, e ainda procuram tirar-me a vida (1Rs 19,10)?

12. Now if the offence of them be the riches of the world, and the diminution of them, the riches of the Gentiles; how much more the fulness of them?

13. Que lhe respondeu a voz divina? Reservei para mim sete mil homens, que não dobraram o joelho diante de Baal (1Rs 19,18).

13. For I say to you, Gentiles: as long indeed as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I will honour my ministry,

14. É o que continua a acontecer no tempo presente: subsiste um resto, segundo a eleição da graça.

14. If, by any means, I may provoke to emulation them who are my flesh, and may save some of them.

15. E se é pela graça, já não o é pelas obras; de outra maneira, a graça cessaria de ser graça.

15. For if the loss of them be the reconciliation of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?

16. Consequência? Que Israel não conseguiu o que procura. Os escolhidos, estes sim, o conseguiram. Quanto aos mais, foram obcecados,

16. For if the firstfruit be holy, so is the lump also: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.

17. como está escrito: Deus lhes deu um espírito de torpor, olhos para que não vejam e ouvidos para que não ouçam, até o dia presente (Dt 29,4).

17. And if some of the branches be broken, and thou, being a wild olive, art ingrafted in them, and art made partaker of the root, and of the fatness of the olive tree,

18. Davi também o diz: A mesa se lhes torne em laço, em armadilha, em ocasião de tropeço, em justo castigo!

18. Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.

19. A vista se lhes obscureça para não verem! Dobra-lhes o espinhaço sem cessar (Sl 68,23s)!

19. Thou wilt say then: The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.

20. Pergunto ainda: Tropeçaram acaso para cair? De modo algum. Mas sua queda, tornando a salvação acessível aos pagãos, incitou-os à emulação.

20. Well: because of unbelief they were broken off. But thou standest by faith: be not highminded, but fear.

21. Ora, se o seu pecado ocasionou a riqueza do mundo, e a sua decadência a riqueza dos pagãos, que não fará a sua conversão em massa?!

21. For if God hath not spared the natural branches, fear lest perhaps he also spare not thee.

22. Declaro-o a vós, homens de origem pagã: como apóstolo dos pagãos, eu procuro honrar o meu ministério,

22. See then the goodness and the severity of God: towards them indeed that are fallen, the severity; but towards thee, the goodness of God, if thou abide in goodness, otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

23. com o intuito de, eventualmente, excitar à emulação os homens da minha raça e salvar alguns deles.*

23. And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again.

24. Porque, se de sua rejeição resultou a reconcilia­ção do mundo, qual será o efeito de sua reintegração, senão uma ressurreição dentre os mortos?

24. For if thou wert cut out of the wild olive tree, which is natural to thee; and, contrary to nature, were grafted into the good olive tree; how much more shall they that are the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?

25. Se as primícias são santas, também a massa o é; e se a raiz é santa, os ramos também o são.

25. For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, of this mystery, (lest you should be wise in your own conceits), that blindness in part has happened in Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles should come in.

26. Se alguns dos ramos foram cortados, e se tu, oliveira selvagem, foste enxer­tada em seu lugar e agora recebes seiva da raiz da oliveira,*

26. And so all Israel should be saved, as it is written: There shall come out of Sion, he that shall deliver, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.

27. não te envaideças nem menosprezes os ramos. Pois, se te gloriares, sabe que não és tu que sustentas a raiz, mas a raiz a ti.

27. And this is to them my covenant: when I shall take away their sins.

28. Dirás, talvez: “Os ramos foram cortados para que eu fosse enxertada”.

28. As concerning the gospel, indeed, they are enemies for your sake: but as touching the election, they are most dear for the sake of the fathers.

29. Sem dúvida! É pela incredulidade que foram cortados, ao passo que tu é pela fé que estás firme. Não te ensoberbeças, antes, teme.

29. For the gifts and the calling of God are without repentance.

30. Se Deus não poupou os ramos naturais, bem poderá não poupar a ti.

30. For as you also in times past did not believe God, but now have obtained mercy, through their unbelief;

31. Considera, pois, a bondade e a severidade de Deus: severidade para com aqueles que caíram, bondade para contigo, suposto que permaneças fiel a essa bondade; do contrário, também tu serás cortada.

31. So these also now have not believed, for your mercy, that they also may obtain mercy.

32. E eles, se não persistirem na incredulidade, serão enxertados; pois Deus é poderoso para enxertá-los de novo.

32. For God hath concluded all in unbelief, that he may have mercy on all.

33. Se tu, cortada da oliveira de natureza selvagem, contra a tua natureza foste enxertada em boa oliveira, quanto mais eles, que são naturais, poderão ser enxertados na sua própria oliveira!

33. O the depth of the riches of the wisdom and of the knowledge of God! How incomprehensible are his judgments, and how unsearchable his ways!

34. Não quero, irmãos, que igno­reis este mistério, para que não vos gabeis de vossa sabedoria: esta cegueira de uma parte de Israel só durará até que haja entrado a totalidade dos pagãos.

34. For who hath known the mind of the Lord? Or who hath been his counsellor?

35. Então, Israel em peso será salvo, como está escrito: Virá de Sião o libertador, apartará de Jacó a impiedade.

35. Or who hath first given to him, and recompense shall be made him?

36. E esta será a minha alian­ça com eles, quando eu tirar os seus pecados (Is 59,20s; 27,9).

36. For of him, and by him, and in him, are all things: to him be glory for ever. Amen.
