Josué, 3

1. Josué, s'étant levé de bon matin, partitde Sétim, lui et tous les enfants d'Israël;arrivés au Jourdain, ils firent une halte avant de letraverser.

1. Early the next morning, Joshua moved with all the Israelites from Shittim to the Jordan, where they lodged before crossing over.

2. Au bout de trois jours, les officiers parcoururent le camp,

2. Three days later the officers went through the camp

3. et donnèrent cet ordre au peuple: «Lorsque vousverrez l'arche de l'alliance de Yahweh, votre Dieu, portéepar les prêtres lévites, partez de ce lieu oùvous campez et mettez-vous en marche après elle,

3. and issued these instructions to the people: "When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD, your God, which the levitical priests will carry, you must also break camp and follow it,

4. -- mais qu'il y ait entre vous et elle une distance de deuxmille coudées environ, n'en approchez pas, -- afin quevous sachiez bien le chemin que vous devez suivre, car vousn'avez jamais passé par ce chemin.»

4. that you may know the way to take, for you have not gone over this road before. But let there be a space of two thousand cubits between you and the ark. Do not come nearer to it."

5. Et Josué dit au peuple: «Sanctifiez-vous, cardemain Yahweh fera des prodiges au milieu de vous.»

5. Joshua also said to the people, "Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will perform wonders among you."

6. Puis Josué parla aux prêtres, en disant:«Portez l'arche d'alliance, et passez en avant dupeuple.» Ils portèrent l'arche d'alliance ets'avancèrent devant le peuple.

6. And he directed the priests to take up the ark of the covenant and go on ahead of the people; and they did so.

7. Yahweh dit à Josué: «Aujourd'hui jecommencerai à t'élever aux yeux de toutIsraël, afin qu'ils sachent que je serai avec toi comme j'aiété avec Moïse.

7. Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know I am with you, as I was with Moses.

8. Toi, donne cet ordre aux prêtres qui portent l'arched'alliance: Lorsque vous arriverez au bord des eaux du Jourdain,vous vous arrêterez dans le Jourdain.»

8. Now command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant to come to a halt in the Jordan when they reach the edge of the waters."

9. Josué dit aux enfants d'Israël: «Approchez etécoutez les paroles de Yahweh, votre Dieu.»

9. So Joshua said to the Israelites, "Come here and listen to the words of the LORD, your God."

10. Et Josué dit: «A ceci vous reconnaîtrez quele Dieu vivant est au milieu de vous, et qu'il ne manquera pas dechasser devant vous les Chananéens, lesHéthéens, les Hévéens, lesPhérézéens, les Gergéséens,les Amorrhéens et les Jébuséens.

10. He continued: "This is how you will know that there is a living God in your midst, who at your approach will dispossess the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites.

11. Voici que l'arche de l'alliance du Seigneur de toute la terreva passer devant vous dans le Jourdain.

11. The ark of the covenant of the LORD of the whole earth will precede you into the Jordan.

12. Maintenant, prenez douze hommes parmi les tribusd'Israël, un homme par chaque tribu.

12. (Now choose twelve men, one from each of the tribes of Israel.)

13. Et dès que les prêtres qui portent l'arche deYahweh, le Seigneur de toute la terre, poseront la plante despieds dans les eaux du Jourdain, les eaux du Jourdain serontcoupées, celles qui descendent d'en haut, et elless'arrêteront en un monceau.»

13. When the soles of the feet of the priests carrying the ark of the LORD, the Lord of the whole earth, touch the water of the Jordan, it will cease to flow; for the water flowing down from upstream will halt in a solid bank."

14. Quand le peuple fut sorti de ses tentes pour passer leJourdain, les prêtres qui portaient l'arche de l'alliancemarchèrent devant le peuple.

14. The people struck their tents to cross the Jordan, with the priests carrying the ark of the covenant ahead of them.

15. Au moment où les porteurs de l'arche arrivèrentau Jourdain et où les pieds des prêtres quiportaient l'arche plongèrent au bord de l'eau, -- car leJourdain déborde par-dessus toutes ses rives tout le tempsde la moisson, --

15. No sooner had these priestly bearers of the ark waded into the waters at the edge of the Jordan, which overflows all its banks during the entire season of the harvest,

16. alors les eaux qui descendent d'en hauts'arrêtèrent; elles s'élevèrent en unmonceau, à une très grande distance, près dela ville d'Adom, qui est à côté de Sarthan;et celles qui descendent vers la mer de l'Arabah, la merSalée, furent complètement coupées; et lepeuple passa vis-à-vis de Jéricho.

16. than the waters flowing from upstream halted, backing up in a solid mass for a very great distance indeed, from Adam, a city in the direction of Zarethan; while those flowing downstream toward the Salt Sea of the Arabah disappeared entirely. Thus the people crossed over opposite Jericho.

17. Les prêtres qui portaient l'arche de l'alliance deYahweh se tinrent de pied ferme sur la terre sèche aumilieu du Jourdain, pendant que tout Israël passait àsec, jusqu'à ce que toute la nation eut achevé depasser le Jourdain.

17. While all Israel crossed over on dry ground, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD remained motionless on dry ground in the bed of the Jordan until the whole nation had completed the passage.
