1 Samuel, 28

1. En ce temps-là, les Philistins rassemblèrent leurs troupes en une seule armée pour aller combattre contre Israël. Et Achis dit à David: « Sache que tu viendras avec moi au camp, toi et tes hommes. »

1. In those days the Philistines mustered their military forces to fight against Israel. So Achish said to David, "You realize, of course, that you and your men must go out on campaign with me to Jezreel."

2. David répondit à Achis: « Aussi tu verras ce que fera ton serviteur. » Et Achis dit à David: « Et moi je t'établirai pour toujours gardien de ma personne. »

2. David answered Achish, "Good! Now you shall learn what your servant can do." Then Achish said to David, "I shall appoint you my permanent bodyguard."

3. Samuel était mort; tout Israël l'avait pleuré, et on l'avait enterré à Rama, dans sa ville. Et Saül avait fait disparaître du pays ceux qui évoquaient les morts et les devins.

3. Now Samuel had died and, after being mourned by all Israel, was buried in his city, Ramah. Meanwhile Saul had driven mediums and fortune-tellers out of the land.

4. Les Philistins s'étant rassemblés, vinrent camper à Sunam; Saül rassembla tout Israël, et ils campèrent à Gelboé.

4. The Philistine levies advanced to Shunem and encamped. Saul, too, mustered all Israel; they camped on Gilboa.

5. A la vue du camp des Philistins, Saül eut peur, et son coeur fut fort agité.

5. When Saul saw the camp of the Philistines, he was dismayed and lost heart completely.

6. Saül consulta Yahweh, et Yahweh ne lui répondit point, ni par les songes, ni par l'Urim, ni par les prophètes.

6. He therefore consulted the LORD; but the LORD gave no answer, whether in dreams or by the Urim or through prophets.

7. Alors Saül dit à ses serviteurs: « Cherchez-moi une femme qui évoque les morts, et j'irai vers elle et je la consulterai. » Ses serviteurs lui dirent: « Il y a à Endor une femme qui évoque les morts. »

7. Then Saul said to his servants, "Find me a woman who is a medium, to whom I can go to seek counsel through her." His servants answered him, "There is a woman in Endor who is a medium."

8. Saül se déguisa et mit d'autres vêtements, et il partit, accompagné de deux hommes. Ils arrivèrent de nuit chez la femme, et Saül lui dit: « Prédis-moi l'avenir en évoquant un mort, et fais-moi monter celui que je te dirai. »

8. So he disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and set out with two companions. They came to the woman by night, and Saul said to her, "Tell my fortune through a ghost; conjure up for me the one I ask you to."

9. La femme lui répondit: « Voici que tu sais ce qu'a fait Saül, comment il a retranché du pays ceux qui évoquent les morts et les devins; pourquoi me tends-tu un piège, pour me faire mourir?

9. But the woman answered him, "You are surely aware of what Saul has done, in driving the mediums and fortune-tellers out of the land. Why, then, are you laying snares for my life, to have me killed?"

10. Saül lui jura par Yahweh en disant: « Aussi vrai que Yahweh est vivant! Il ne t'arrivera aucun mal à cause de cela. »

10. But Saul swore to her by the LORD, "As the LORD lives, you shall incur no blame for this."

11. Et la femme dit: « Qui te ferai-je monter? » Il répondit: « Fais-moi monter Samuel. »

11. Then the woman asked him, "Whom do you want me to conjure up?" and he answered, "Samuel."

12. A la vue de Samuel, la femme poussa un grand cri; et la femme dit à Saül: « Pourquoi m'as-tu trompée? Tu es Saül! »

12. When the woman saw Samuel, she shrieked at the top of her voice and said to Saul, "Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!"

13. Le roi lui dit: « Ne crains pas; mais qu'as-tu vu? » La femme dit à Saül: « Je vois un dieu qui monte de la terre. »

13. But the king said to her, "Have no fear. What do you see?" The woman answered Saul, "I see a preternatural being rising from the earth."

14. Il lui dit: « Quelle figure a-t-il? » Et elle répondit: « C'est un vieillard qui monte, et il est enveloppé d'un manteau. » Saül comprit que c'était Samuel, et il se jeta le visage contre terre et se prosterna.

14. "What does he look like?" asked Saul. And she replied, "It is an old man who is rising, clothed in a mantle." Saul knew that it was Samuel, and so he bowed face to the ground in homage.

15. Samuel dit à Saül: « Pourquoi m'as-tu troublé, en me faisant monter? » Saül répondit: « Je suis dans une grande détresse: les Philistins me font la guerre, et Dieu s'est retiré de moi; il ne m'a répondu ni par les prophètes ni par les songes. Je t'ai évoqué pour que tu me fasses connaître ce que j'ai à faire. »

15. Samuel then said to Saul, "Why do you disturb me by conjuring me up?" Saul replied: "I am in great straits, for the Philistines are waging war against me and God has abandoned me. Since he no longer answers me through prophets or in dreams, I have called you to tell me what I should do."

16. Samuel dit: « Pourquoi me consultes-tu, puisque Yahweh s'est retiré de toi et qu'il est devenu ton adversaire?

16. To this Samuel said: "But why do you ask me, if the LORD has abandoned you and is with your neighbor?

17. Yahweh a agi comme il l'avait annoncé par mon intermédiaire: Yahweh a arraché la royauté de ta main, et l'a donnée à ton compagnon, à David.

17. The LORD has done to you what he foretold through me: he has torn the kingdom from your grasp and has given it to your neighbor David.

18. Parce que tu n'as pas obéi à la voix de Yahweh, et que tu n'as pas traité Amalec selon l'ardeur de sa colère, c'est pour cela que Yahweh a ainsi agi envers toi en ce jour.

18. "Because you disobeyed the LORD'S directive and would not carry out his fierce anger against Amalek, the LORD has done this to you today.

19. Et même Yahweh livrera Israël avec toi aux mains des Philistins. Demain, toi et tes fils, vous serez avec moi, et Yahweh livrera le camp d'Israël entre les mains des Philistins. »

19. Moreover, the LORD will deliver Israel, and you as well, into the clutches of the Philistines. By tomorrow you and your sons will be with me, and the LORD will have delivered the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines."

20. Aussitôt Saül tomba par terre de toute sa hauteur, car les paroles de Samuel l'avaient rempli d'effroi; de plus, les forces lui manquaient, car il n'avait pris aucune nourriture de tout le jour et de toute la nuit.

20. Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, for he was badly shaken by Samuel's message. Moreover, he had no bodily strength left, since he had eaten nothing all that day and night.

21. La femme vint vers Saül et, voyant son grand trouble, elle lui dit: « Ta servante a obéi à ta voix; j'ai exposé ma vie, en obéissant aux paroles que tu m'as dites.

21. Then the woman came to Saul, and seeing that he was quite terror-stricken, said to him: "Remember, your maidservant obeyed you: I took my life in my hands and fulfilled the request you made of me.

22. Ecoute maintenant, toi aussi, la voix de ta servante, et que je t'offre un morceau de pain; manges-en, pour avoir de la force lorsque tu poursuivras ta route.

22. Now you, in turn, please listen to your maidservant. Let me set something before you to eat, so that you may have strength when you go on your way."

23. Mais il refusa et dit: « Je ne mangerai point. » Ses serviteurs, ainsi que la femme, le pressèrent, et il se rendit à leurs instances. Il se leva de terre et s'assit sur le divan.

23. But he refused, saying, "I will not eat." However, when his servants joined the woman in urging him, he listened to their entreaties, got up from the ground, and sat on a couch.

24. La femme avait chez elle un veau gras, elle se hâta de le tuer et, prenant de la farine, elle la pétrit et en cuisit des pains sans levain.

24. The woman had a stall-fed calf in the house, which she now quickly slaughtered. Then taking flour, she kneaded it and baked unleavened bread.

25. Elle les mit devant Saül et devant ses serviteurs, et ils mangèrent. Puis s'étant levés, ils partirent la nuit même.

25. She set the meal before Saul and his servants, and they ate. Then they stood up and left the same night.
