Hebrews 5 deals with the importance of priesthood and the role of the high priest to offer sacrifices for the sins of the people. The author compares the high priest to Jesus Christ, noting that Jesus was also called by God to be a high priest and offer sacrifices for the sins of humanity. The chapter also addresses the need for spiritual maturity and knowledge of God's Word to discern between good and evil. Leviticus 16:34: "And this will be a perpetual statute for you, that you may do atonement for the children of Israel for all their sins once a year. And he did as the Lord had commanded him."
