Judith, 14

1. Judith said, 'Listen to me, brothers. Take this head and hang it on your battlements.

1. Da sagte Judit zu ihnen: Hört mich an, meine Brüder! Nehmt diesen Kopf und hängt ihn an der Zinne eurer Stadtmauer auf!

2. When morning comes and the sun is up, let every man take his arms and every able-bodied man leave the town. Appoint a leader for them, as if you meant to march down to the plain against the Assyrian advanced post. But you must not do this.

2. Wenn dann der Morgen anbricht und die Sonne über der Erde aufgeht, greift alle zu den Waffen und rückt mit allen wehrfähigen Männern zum Stadttor hinaus! Ihr müsst einen Anführer an ihre Spitze stellen und dann so tun, als ob ihr hinabsteigen und die assyrischen Vorposten in der Ebene angreifen wollt; in Wirklichkeit aber dürft ihr nicht hinabgehen.

3. The Assyrians will gather up their equipment, make for their camp and wake up their commanders; they in turn will rush to the tent of Holofernes and not be able to find him. They will then be seized with panic and flee at your advance.

3. Dann werden die feindlichen Vorposten sich kampfbereit machen, in ihr Lager eilen und die Anführer der assyrischen Truppen wecken. Wenn sie vor dem Zelt des Holofernes zusammenströmen, ihn aber nicht finden, werden sie, von Schrecken gepackt, vor euch flüchten.

4. All you and the others who live in the territory of Israel will have to do is to give chase and slaughter them as they retreat.

4. Ihr aber und die Bewohner des ganzen Landes Israel setzt ihnen nach und macht sie auf der Flucht nieder!

5. 'But before you do this, call me Achior the Ammonite, for him to see and identify the man who held the House of Israel in contempt, the man who sent him to us as someone already doomed to die.'

5. Doch zuvor ruft mir noch den Ammoniter Achior, damit er sich den Mann ansieht und ihn wiedererkennt, der das Haus Israel verachtet und der ihn als einen Todgeweihten zu uns geschickt hat.

6. So they had Achior brought from Uzziah's house. No sooner had he arrived and seen the head of Holofernes held by a member of the people's assembly than he fell on his face in a faint.

6. Da rief man Achior aus dem Haus des Usija herbei. Als er kam und in der Hand eines Mannes aus der Volksmenge den Kopf des Holofernes erblickte, fiel er ohnmächtig zu Boden.

7. They lifted him up. He then threw himself at Judith's feet and, prostrate before her, exclaimed: May you be blessed in all the tents of Judah and in every nation; those who hear your name will be seized with dread!

7. Nachdem man ihn wieder aufgerichtet hatte, warf er sich Judit zu Füßen, verneigte sich vor ihr und sagte: Gepriesen seist du in allen Zelten Judas und bei allen Völkern. Wer immer deinen Namen hört, wird vor Schrecken erzittern.

8. 'Now tell me everything that you have done in these past few days.' And surrounded by the people, Judith told him everything she had done from the day she left Bethulia to the moment when she was speaking.

8. Doch jetzt erzähl mir, was du in diesen Tagen getan hast. Judit berichtete ihm vor dem ganzen Volk alles, was sie getan hatte, angefangen von dem Tag ihres Weggangs bis zu dem Augenblick ihres jetzigen Gesprächs.

9. When she came to the end, the people cheered at the top of their voices until the town echoed.

9. Als sie mit ihrem Bericht fertig war, brach das Volk in lauten Jubel aus und erhob in der Stadt ein Freudengeschrei.

10. Achior, recognising all that the God of Israel had done, believed ardently in him and, accepting circumcision, was permanently incorporated into the House of Israel.

10. Achior aber, der begriff, dass der Gott Israels diese Tat vollbracht hatte, glaubte aus ganzem Herzen an Gott; er ließ sich beschneiden und wurde von da an dem Haus Israel zugerechnet und so ist es bis auf den heutigen Tag geblieben.

11. At daybreak they hung the head of Holofernes on the ramparts. Every man took his arms and they all went out in groups to the slopes of the mountain.

11. Sobald der Morgen anbrach, hängte man den Kopf des Holofernes an der Mauer auf. Alle Männer griffen zu den Waffen und zogen in Scharen zu den Wegen, die in das Gebirge hinaufführten.

12. Seeing this, the Assyrians sent word to their leaders, who in turn reported to the generals, the captains of thousands and all the other officers;

12. Als die Assyrer sie sahen, meldeten sie es ihren Anführern; diese eilten zu den Feldherren, Obersten und allen Offizieren.

13. and these in their turn reported to the tent of Holofernes. 'Rouse our master,' they said to his major-domo, 'these slaves have dared to march down on us to attack -- and to be wiped out to a man!'

13. Sie trafen sich beim Zelt des Holofernes und sagten zu dem Verwalter seines gesamten Eigentums: Weck doch unseren Herrn! Diese Sklaven wagen es herabzukommen und bieten uns den Kampf an, um vollends in ihr Verderben zu rennen.

14. Bagoas went inside and struck the curtain dividing the tent, thinking that Holofernes was sleeping with Judith.

14. Da ging Bagoas hinein und klatschte vor dem Zeltvorhang; denn er war der Meinung, Holofernes schlafe mit Judit.

15. But as no one seemed to hear, he drew the curtain and went into the bedroom, to find him thrown down dead on the threshold, with his head cut off.

15. Als niemand Gehör gab, schlug er den Vorhang zurück und trat in das Schlafgemach ein. Da fand er Holofernes tot ausgestreckt auf der Schwelle liegen und sah, dass ihm der Kopf abgeschlagen worden war.

16. He gave a great shout, wept, sobbed, shrieked and rent his clothes.

16. Er stieß einen lauten Schrei aus und zerriss unter Weinen, Stöhnen und lautem Klagen seine Kleider.

17. He then went into the tent which Judith had occupied and could not find her either. Then, rushing out to the men, he shouted,

17. Dann eilte er in das Zelt, wo Judit untergebracht war; als er sie nicht mehr vorfand, stürzte er unter die Soldaten hinaus und schrie:

18. 'The slaves have rebelled! A single Hebrew woman has brought shame on the House of Nebuchadnezzar. Holofernes is lying dead on the ground, without his head!'

18. Diese Sklaven haben Verrat geübt! Ein einzelnes Weib der Hebräer hat Schande über das ganze Haus des Königs Nebukadnezzar gebracht. Seht her: Holofernes liegt am Boden und er hat keinen Kopf mehr.

19. When they heard this, the leaders of the Assyrian army tore their tunics in consternation, and the camp rang with their wild cries and their shouting.

19. Als sie das hörten, zerrissen die Führer des assyrischen Heeres ihre Kleider; tiefe Bestürzung ergriff sie und ihr Klagegeschrei schallte laut durch das Lager.
