Actes des Apôtres, 23

1. Paul, les regards fixés sur le Sanhédrin, dit : " Frères, je me suis conduit devant Dieu jusqu'à ce jour en toute bonne conscience. "

1. Paul looked intently at the Sanhedrin and said, "My brothers, I have conducted myself with a perfectly clear conscience before God to this day."

2. Mais le grand prêtre Ananie ordonna à ses assistants de le frapper sur la bouche. Alors Paul lui dit :

2. The high priest Ananias ordered his attendants to strike his mouth.

3. " Dieu te frappera, muraille blanchie ! Même toi qui sièges pour me juger selon la Loi, au mépris de la Loi, tu ordonnes qu'on me frappe ! "

3. Then Paul said to him, "God will strike you, you whitewashed wall. Do you indeed sit in judgment upon me according to the law and yet in violation of the law order me to be struck?"

4. Les assistants dirent : " Tu injuries le grand prêtre de Dieu ! "

4. The attendants said, "Would you revile God's high priest?"

5. Paul dit : " Je ne savais pas, frères, qu'il fût grand prêtre; car il est écrit : Tu ne parleras pas mal du chef de ton peuple. "

5. Paul answered, "Brothers, I did not realize he was the high priest. For it is written, 'You shall not curse a ruler of your people.'"

6. Or Paul, sachant qu'une partie (de l'assemblée) était (composée) de Sadducéens et l'autre de Pharisiens, s'écria dans le Sanhédrin : " Frères, je suis Pharisien, fils de Pharisiens; c'est à cause de l'espérance en la résurrection des morts que je suis mis en jugement. "

6. Paul was aware that some were Sadducees and some Pharisees, so he called out before the Sanhedrin, "My brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees; (I) am on trial for hope in the resurrection of the dead."

7. Quand il eut prononcé ces paroles, il s'éleva une discussion entre les Pharisiens et les Sadducéens, et l'assemblée se divisa.

7. When he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the group became divided.

8. Car les Sadducéens disent qu'il n'y a point de résurrection, ni d'ange ni d'esprit, tandis que les Pharisiens affirment l'un et l'autre.

8. For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection or angels or spirits, while the Pharisees acknowledge all three.

9. Il y eut donc une grande clameur, et quelques scribes du parti des Pharisiens, s'étant levés, discutaient fortement, disant : " Nous ne trouvons rien de mal en cet homme; si un esprit ou un ange lui a parlé?? "

9. A great uproar occurred, and some scribes belonging to the Pharisee party stood up and sharply argued, "We find nothing wrong with this man. Suppose a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?"

10. Comme la discussion allait croissant, le tribun, craignant que Paul ne fût mis en pièces par eux, ordonna à la troupe de descendre pour l'enlever du milieu d'eux et de le ramener à la forteresse.

10. The dispute was so serious that the commander, afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them, ordered his troops to go down and rescue him from their midst and take him into the compound.

11. La nuit suivante, le Seigneur se présenta à lui et dit : " Courage ! Car de même que tu as rendu témoignage à Jérusalem sur ce qui me concerne, il faut aussi que tu rendes témoignage à Rome. "

11. The following night the Lord stood by him and said, "Take courage. For just as you have borne witness to my cause in Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness in Rome."

12. Quand le jour fut venu, les Juifs tinrent une réunion et jurèrent avec anathème contre eux-mêmes de ne manger ni boire jusqu'à ce qu'ils eussent tué Paul.

12. When day came, the Jews made a plot and bound themselves by oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.

13. Ils étaient plus de quarante qui avaient fait cette conjuration.

13. There were more than forty who formed this conspiracy.

14. Ils allèrent trouver les grands prêtres et les Anciens, et ils dirent : " Nous avons juré avec anathème contre nous-mêmes de ne prendre aucune nourriture que nous n'ayons tué Paul.>

14. They went to the chief priests and elders and said, "We have bound ourselves by a solemn oath to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.

15. Vous donc, maintenant, signifiez au tribun, avec le Sanhédrin, qu'il l'amène devant vous, comme si vous vouliez examiner plus à fond son affaire, et nous, nous sommes prêts à le tuer avant qu'il approche. "

15. You, together with the Sanhedrin, must now make an official request to the commander to have him bring him down to you, as though you meant to investigate his case more thoroughly. We on our part are prepared to kill him before he arrives."

16. Or le fils de la s?ur de Paul, ayant eu connaissance du guet-apens, se rendit à la forteresse et entra pour en donner communication à Paul.

16. The son of Paul's sister, however, heard about the ambush; so he went and entered the compound and reported it to Paul.

17. Paul, ayant appelé un des centurions, (lui) dit : " Mène ce jeune homme au tribun, car il a quelque chose à lui communiquer. "

17. Paul then called one of the centurions and requested, "Take this young man to the commander; he has something to report to him."

18. Lui, prenant le jeune homme, le mena au tribun et dit : " Le prisonnier Paul, m'ayant appelé, m'a prié de t'amener ce jeune homme, qui a quelque chose à te dire. "

18. So he took him and brought him to the commander and explained, "The prisoner Paul called me and asked that I bring this young man to you; he has something to say to you."

19. Le tribun le prit par la main et, l'ayant tiré à part, il lui demanda : " Qu'as-tu à me communiquer? "

19. The commander took him by the hand, drew him aside, and asked him privately, "What is it you have to report to me?"

20. Il dit : " Les Juifs sont convenus de te prier de faire conduire Paul demain au Sanhédrin, sous prétexte de t'informer plus à fond sur lui.

20. He replied, "The Jews have conspired to ask you to bring Paul down to the Sanhedrin tomor row, as though they meant to inquire about him more thoroughly,

21. Toi donc, ne les écoute pas, car plus de quarante d'entre eux lui préparent un guet-apens et ont juré avec anathème contre eux-mêmes de ne manger ni boire qu'ils ne l'aient tué. Maintenant ils sont prêts, dans l'attende de ta promesse. "

21. but do not believe them. More than forty of them are lying in wait for him; they have bound themselves by oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him. They are now ready and only wait for your consent."

22. Le tribun renvoya le jeune homme, après lui avoir commandé de ne dire à personne qu'il lui avait révélé cela.

22. As the commander dismissed the young man he directed him, "Tell no one that you gave me this information."

23. Et ayant appelé deux des centurions, il dit : " Tenez prêts, dès la troisième heure de la nuit, deux cents soldats ainsi que soixante-dix cavaliers et deux cents lanciers, pour aller jusqu'à Césarée.

23. Then he summoned two of the centurions and said, "Get two hundred soldiers ready to go to Caesarea by nine o'clock tonight, along with seventy horsemen and two hundred auxiliaries.

24. Que des montures soient là pour faire monter Paul et le conduire sain et sauf au procurateur Félix. "

24. Provide mounts for Paul to ride and give him safe conduct to Felix the governor."

25. Il écrivit une lettre en ces termes :

25. Then he wrote a letter with this content:

26. " Claude Lysias, au très excellent procurateur Félix, salut !

26. "Claudius Lysias to his excellency the governor Felix, greetings.

27. Les Juifs s'étaient saisis de cet homme et allaient le tuer, lorsque je survins avec la troupe et l'arrachai de leurs mains, ayant apprit qu'il était Romain.

27. This man, seized by the Jews and about to be murdered by them, I rescued after intervening with my troops when I learned that he was a Roman citizen.

28. Voulant savoir pour quel motif ils l'accusaient, je l'ai amené devant leur Sanhédrin.

28. I wanted to learn the reason for their accusations against him so I brought him down to their Sanhedrin.

29. J'ai trouvé qu'il était accusé pour des questions relatives à leur loi, mais qu'il n'avait aucune charge qui méritât la mort ou les chaînes.

29. I discovered that he was accused in matters of controversial questions of their law and not of any charge deserving death or imprisonment.

30. Informé qu'il y avait un complot contre cet homme, je te l'ai aussitôt envoyé, faisant savoir aussi aux accusateurs de dire devant toi ce (qu'ils ont) contre lui. Porte-toi bien. "

30. Since it was brought to my attention that there will be a plot against the man, I am sending him to you at once, and have also notified his accusers to state (their case) against him before you."

31. Les soldats donc ayant pris Paul, selon l'ordre qu'ils avaient reçu, le conduisirent pendant la nuit à Antipatris.

31. So the soldiers, according to their orders, took Paul and escorted him by night to Antipatris.

32. Le lendemain, laissant les cavaliers s'en aller avec lui, ils retournèrent à la forteresse.

32. The next day they re turned to the compound, leaving the horsemen to complete the journey with him.

33. Arrivés à Césarée, (les cavaliers) remirent la lettre au procurateur et lui présentèrent aussi Paul.

33. When they arrived in Caesarea they delivered the letter to the governor and presented Paul to him.

34. Après avoir lu, il lui demanda de quelle province il était; et apprenant qu'il était de Cilicie :

34. When he had read it and asked to what province he belonged, and learned that he was from Cilicia,

35. " Je t'entendrai, dit-il, quand tes accusateurs aussi seront arrivés. " Il ordonna de le garder dans le prétoire d'Hérode.

35. he said, "I shall hear your case when your accusers arrive." Then he ordered that he be held in custody in Herod's praetorium.
