Actes des Apôtres, 12

1. Or, en ce temps-là, le roi Hérode fit arrêter quelques-uns des membres de l'Eglise pour les maltraiter.

1. About that time King Herod laid hands upon some members of the church to harm them.

2. Il fit mourir par le glaive Jacques, le frère de Jean.

2. He had James, the brother of John, killed by the sword,

3. Voyant que cela était agréable aux Juifs, il ordonna encore l'arrestation aussi de Pierre. C'était (pendant) les jours des Azymes.

3. and when he saw that this was pleasing to the Jews he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (It was (the) feast of Unleavened Bread.)

4. L'ayant fait prendre, il le mit en prison, le plaçant sous la garde de quatre escouades de quatre soldats chacune, avec l'intention de le faire comparaître devant le peuple après la Pâque.

4. He had him taken into custody and put in prison under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each. He intended to bring him before the people after Passover.

5. Pierre donc était gardé dans la prison, mais l'Eglise faisait pour lui une prière instante à Dieu.

5. Peter thus was being kept in prison, but prayer by the church was fervently being made to God on his behalf.

6. Or, alors qu'Hérode allait le faire comparaître, cette nuit-là, Pierre, lié de deux chaînes, dormait entre deux soldats, et des sentinelles devant la porte gardaient la prison.

6. On the very night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter, secured by double chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while outside the door guards kept watch on the prison.

7. Et voici que survint un ange du Seigneur et qu'une lumière resplendit dans le cachot. Frappant Pierre au côté, il l'éveilla et dit : " Lève-toi promptement ! " Et les chaînes lui tombèrent des mains.

7. Suddenly the angel of the Lord stood by him and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and awakened him, saying, "Get up quickly." The chains fell from his wrists.

8. Puis l'ange lui dit : " Mets ta ceinture et chausse tes sandales. " Il le fit, et (l'ange) lui dit : " Enveloppe-toi de ton manteau et suis-moi. "

8. The angel said to him, "Put on your belt and your sandals." He did so. Then he said to him, "Put on your cloak and follow me."

9. Etant sorti, il le suivait, et il ne savait pas que fût réel ce qui se faisait par l'ange, mais il pensait avoir une vision.

9. So he followed him out, not realizing that what was happening through the angel was real; he thought he was seeing a vision.

10. Lorsqu'ils eurent franchi le premier poste de garde, puis le deuxième, ils arrivèrent à la porte de fer donnant sur la ville : elle s'ouvrit d'elle-même pour eux; puis, étant sortis, ils s'avancèrent dans une rue, et aussitôt l'ange le quitta.

10. They passed the first guard, then the second, and came to the iron gate leading out to the city, which opened for them by itself. They emerged and made their way down an alley, and suddenly the angel left him.

11. Revenu à lui-même, Pierre dit : " Maintenant je sais que le Seigneur a réellement envoyé son ange, et qu'il m'a tiré de la main d'Hérode et de tout ce qu'attendait le peuple des Juifs. "

11. Then Peter recovered his senses and said, "Now I know for certain that (the) Lord sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people had been expecting."

12. Après un temps de réflexion, il se rendit la maison de Marie, la mère de Jean, surnommé Marc, où une assez nombreuse assemblée était en prière.

12. When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who is called Mark, where there were many people gathered in prayer.

13. Or, quand il eut frappé à la porte du porche, une jeune servante, nommée Rhodé, s'avança pour écouter,

13. When he knocked on the gateway door, a maid named Rhoda came to answer it.

14. et ayant reconnu la voix de Pierre, dans sa joie, elle n'ouvrit pas la porte, mais courut à l'intérieur annoncer que Pierre était devant le porche.

14. She was so overjoyed when she recognized Peter's voice that, instead of opening the gate, she ran in and announced that Peter was standing at the gate.

15. Ils lui dirent : " Tu es folle ! " Mais elle assurait que c'était ainsi, et ils disaient : " C'est son ange. "

15. They told her, "You are out of your mind," but she insisted that it was so. But they kept saying, "It is his angel."

16. Quant à Pierre, il continuait de frapper. Lorsqu'ils eurent ouvert, en le voyant, ils furent saisis de stupeur.

16. But Peter continued to knock, and when they opened it, they saw him and were astounded.

17. Mais lui, de la main, leur fit signe de se taire, et il leur raconta comment le Seigneur l'avait mené hors de la prison, et il dit : " Annoncez cela à Jacques et aux frères. " Puis il sortit et s'en alla dans un autre lieu.

17. He motioned to them with his hand to be quiet and explained (to them) how the Lord had led him out of the prison, and said, "Report this to James and the brothers." Then he left and went to another place.

18. Or, le jour venu, ce ne fut pas petite agitation parmi les soldats pour savoir ce que Pierre était devenu.

18. At daybreak there was no small commotion among the soldiers over what had become of Peter.

19. Mais Hérode, l'ayant fait chercher et ne l'ayant pas trouvé, procéda à l'interrogatoire des sentinelles et ordonna de les conduire(au supplice). ensuite il descendit de Judée à Césarée, (où) il séjourna.

19. Herod, after instituting a search but not finding him, ordered the guards tried and executed. Then he left Judea to spend some time in Caesarea.

20. Or il était fort irrité contre les Tyriens et les Sidoniens. Eux, d'un commun accord, se présentèrent à lui; et, après avoir gagné Blastus, le chambellan du roi, ils demandaient la paix, parce que leur pays tirait sa subsistance de celui du roi.

20. He had long been very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, who now came to him in a body. After winning over Blastus, the king's chamberlain, they sued for peace because their country was supplied with food from the king's territory.

21. Au jour fixé, Hérode, revêtu du costume royal et assis sur l'estrade, les haranguait;

21. On an appointed day, Herod, attired in royal robes, (and) seated on the rostrum, addressed them publicly.

22. et le peuple acclamait : " C'est un Dieu qui parle, et non un homme ! "

22. The assembled crowd cried out, "This is the voice of a god, not of a man."

23. Mais à l'instant un ange du Seigneur le frappa, parce qu'il n'avait pas donné la gloire à Dieu, et, devenu pâture des vers, il expira.

23. At once the angel of the Lord struck him down because he did not ascribe the honor to God, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.

24. Cependant la parole de Dieu se répandait et progressait.

24. But the word of God continued to spread and grow.

25. Barnabé et Saul, après s'être acquittés de leur service, s'en retournèrent de Jérusalem, ayant pris avec eux Jean, surnommé Marc.

25. After Barnabas and Saul completed their relief mission, they returned to Jerusalem, taking with them John, who is called Mark.
