Deutéronome, 4

1. Et maintenant, Israël, écoute les lois et lesordonnances que je vous enseigne pour les mettre en pratique,afin que vous viviez, que vous entriez et que vouspossédiez le pays que vous donne Yahweh, le Dieu de vospères.

1. "Now, Israel, hear the statutes and decrees which I am teaching you to observe, that you may live, and may enter in and take possession of the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.

2. Vous n'ajouterez rien à ce que je vous prescris, et vousn'en retrancherez rien; mais vous observerez les commandements deYahweh, votre Dieu, que je vous prescris.

2. In your observance of the commandments of the LORD, your God, which I enjoin upon you, you shall not add to what I command you nor subtract from it.

3. 6. Du ciel, il t'a fait entendre sa voix pour t'instruire, etsur la terre, il t'a fait voir son grand feu, et tu as entenduses paroles du milieu du feu.

3. You have seen with your own eyes what the LORD did at Baal-peor: the LORD, your God, destroyed from your midst everyone that followed the Baal of Peor;

4. tandis que vous, qui vous êtes attachés àYahweh, votre Dieu, vous êtes aujourd'hui tous vivants.

4. but you, who clung to the LORD, your God, are all alive today.

5. Je vous ai enseigné des lois et des ordonnances commeYahweh, mon Dieu, me l'a commandé, afin que vous lesmettiez en pratique dans le pays où vous entrez pour leposséder.

5. Therefore, I teach you the statutes and decrees as the LORD, my God, has commanded me, that you may observe them in the land you are entering to occupy.

6. Vous les observerez et les mettrez en pratique; car ce seralà votre sagesse et votre intelligence, aux yeux despeuples qui entendront parler de toutes ces lois et diront:Certes, cette grande nation est un peuple sage etintelligent!

6. Observe them carefully, for thus will you give evidence of your wisdom and intelligence to the nations, who will hear of all these statutes and say, 'This great nation is truly a wise and intelligent people.'

7. Quelle est,, en effet, la grande nation qui ait des dieuxprès d'elle, comme nous avons Yahweh, notre Dieu, toutesles fois que nous l'invoquons?

7. For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the LORD, our God, is to us whenever we call upon him?

8. Et quelle est la grande nation qui ait des lois et desordonnances justes, comme toute cette loi que je mets aujourd'huidevant vous?

8. Or what great nation has statutes and decrees that are as just as this whole law which I am setting before you today?

9. Seulement prends garde à toi et garde attentivement tonâme, de peur d'oublier les choses que tes yeux ont vues, etde les laisser sortir de ton coeur, un seul jour de ta vie; maisenseigne-les à tes enfants et aux enfants de tesenfants.

9. "However, take care and be earnestly on your guard not to forget the things which your own eyes have seen, nor let them slip from your memory as long as you live, but teach them to your children and to your children's children.

10. Souviens-toi du jour où tu te présenteras devantYahweh, ton Dieu, en Horeb, lorsque Yahweh me dit:«Assemble-moi le peuple; je leur ferai entendre mesparoles, afin qu'ils apprennent à me craindre, tout letemps qu'ils les enseignent à leur enfants.»

10. There was the day on which you stood before the LORD, your God, at Horeb, and he said to me, 'Assemble the people for me; I will have them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me as long as they live in the land and may so teach their children.'

11. Vous vous approchâtes et vous vous tîntes au piedde la montagne; la montagne était en feu et la flammes'élevait jusque dans les profondeurs du ciel, parmi desténèbres, des nuées et del'obscurité.

11. You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, which blazed to the very sky with fire and was enveloped in a dense black cloud.

12. Alors Yahweh vous parla du milieu du feu; vous entendiez leson des paroles, mais sans voir de figure: vousn'entendîtes qu'une voix.

12. Then the LORD spoke to you from the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of the words, but saw no form; there was only a voice.

13. Il promulga son alliance, qu'il vous ordonna d'observer,savoir les dix commandements, et il les écrivit sur deuxtables de pierre.

13. He proclaimed to you his covenant, which he commanded you to keep: the ten commandments, which he wrote on two tablets of stone.

14. En ce temps-là, Yahweh me commanda de vous enseignerdes lois et des ordonnances, pour que vous les pratiquiez dans lepays où vous allez entrer pour en prendre possession.

14. The LORD charged me at that time to teach you the statutes and decrees which you are to observe over in the land you will occupy.

15. Puisque vous n'avez vu aucune figure le jour où Yahwehvous parla du milieu du feu en Horeb, prenez bien garde àvos âmes,

15. "You saw no form at all on the day the LORD spoke to you at Horeb from the midst of the fire. Be strictly on your guard, therefore,

16. de peur que vous ne vous fassiez une image taillée,figure de quelque idole, image d'homme ou de femme,

16. not to degrade yourselves by fashioning an idol to represent any figure, whether it be the form of a man or a woman,

17. toute image d'animal qui vit sur la terre, toute imaged'oiseau qui vole dans le ciel,

17. of any animal on the earth or of any bird that flies in the sky,

18. toute image de bête qui rampe sur le sol, toute image depoisson qui vit dans les eaux au-dessous de la terre;

18. of anything that crawls on the ground or of any fish in the waters under the earth.

19. de peur que, levant les yeux vers le ciel, et voyant lesoleil, la lune et les étoiles, toute l'armée descieux, tu ne sois attiré à te prosterner devant euxet à leur rendre un culte, eux que Yahweh, ton Dieu, adonnés en partage à tous les peuples qui sontpartout sous le ciel.

19. And when you look up to the heavens and behold the sun or the moon or any star among the heavenly hosts, do not be led astray into adoring them and serving them. These the LORD, your God, has let fall to the lot of all other nations under the heavens;

20. Mais vous, Yahweh vous a pris et vous a fait sortir de lafournaise à fondre le fer, de l'Egypte, pour devenir lepeuple de son héritage, comme vous l'êtesaujourd'hui.

20. but you he has taken and led out of that iron foundry, Egypt, that you might be his very own people, as you are today.

21. Et Yahweh s'irrita contre moi, à cause de vous, et iljura que je ne passerais pas le Jourdain, et que je n'entreraispas dans le bon pays que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te donne enhéritage.

21. Since the LORD was angered against me on your account and swore that I should not cross the Jordan nor enter the good land which he is giving you as a heritage,

22. Je vais mourir dans ce pays-ci, sans passer le Jourdain; maisvous le passerez et vous posséderez ce bon pays.

22. I myself shall die in this country without crossing the Jordan; but you will cross over and take possession of that good land.

23. Prenez garde à vous, pour ne pas oublier l'alliance queYahweh, votre Dieu, a contractée avec vous, et ne pas vousfaire d'image taillée, de figure quelconque de ce queYahweh, ton Dieu, t'a défendu.

23. Take heed, therefore, lest, forgetting the covenant which the LORD, your God, has made with you, you fashion for yourselves against his command an idol in any form whatsoever.

24. Car Yahweh, ton Dieu, est un feu dévorant, un Dieujaloux.

24. For the LORD, your God, is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

25. Lorsque tu auras des enfants et des enfants, et que vous aurezlongtemps habité le pays, si vous vous corrompez et sivous vous faites quelque image taillée, figure de quoi quece soit, faisant ainsi ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahweh, tonDieu, pour l'irriter,

25. "When you have children and grandchildren, and have grown old in the land, should you then degrade yourselves by fashioning an idol in any form and by this evil done in his sight provoke the LORD, your God,

26. -- j'en prends aujourd'hui à témoin contre vousle ciel et la terre, -- vous périrez bientôt etdisparaîtrez du pays dont vous allez prendre possession enpassant le Jourdain; vous n'y prolongerez pas vos jours, car vousserez entièrement détruits.

26. I call heaven and earth this day to witness against you, that you shall all quickly perish from the land which you will occupy when you cross the Jordan. You shall not live in it for any length of time but shall be promptly wiped out.

27. Yahweh vous dispersera parmi les peuples, et vous resterez enpetit nombre au milieu des nations où Yahweh vousmènera.

27. The LORD will scatter you among the nations, and there shall remain but a handful of you among the nations to which the LORD will lead you.

28. Et là vous servirez des dieux, ouvrages de mainsd'homme, du bois et la pierre, qui ne voient point, n'entendentpoint, ne mangent point et ne sentent point.

28. There you shall serve gods fashioned by the hands of man out of wood and stone, gods which can neither see nor hear, neither eat nor smell.

29. De là vous chercherez Yahweh, ton Dieu, et tu letrouveras, si tu le cherches de tout ton coeur et de toute tonâme.

29. Yet there too you shall seek the LORD, your God; and you shall indeed find him when you search after him with your whole heart and your whole soul.

30. Au milieu de ta détresse, quand toutes ces chosesseront venues sur toi, dans les derniers jours, tu retournerasà Yahweh, ton Dieu, et tu écouteras sa voix;

30. In your distress, when all these things shall have come upon you, you shall finally return to the LORD, your God, and heed his voice.

31. car c'est un Dieu compatissant que Yahweh, ton Dieu: il net'abandonnera pas et ne te détruira pas; il n'oubliera passon alliance avec tes pères, qu'il leur ajurée.

31. Since the LORD, your God, is a merciful God, he will not abandon and destroy you, nor forget the covenant which under oath he made with your fathers.

32. Interroge les temps anciens qui t'ontprécédé, depuis le jouR où Dieucréa l'homme sur la terre, et d'uneextrémité du ciel à l'autreextrémité: est-il jamais arrivé si grandechose, et a-t-on jamais entendu rien de pareil?

32. "Ask now of the days of old, before your time, ever since God created man upon the earth; ask from one end of the sky to the other: Did anything so great ever happen before? Was it ever heard of?

33. Un peuple a-t-il entendu la voix de Dieu parlant du milieu dufeu, comme tu l'as entendue, et est-il demeuré vivant?

33. Did a people ever hear the voice of God speaking from the midst of fire, as you did, and live?

34. Jamais un dieu essaya-t-il de venir prendre pour lui unenation du milieu d'une autre nation, par des épreuves, dessignes, des miracles, par la guerre, à main forte età bras étendu, et par de grandes épouvantes,selon tout ce qu'a fait pour vous Yahweh, votre Dieu, sous tesyeux, en Egypte?

34. Or did any god venture to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, with his strong hand and outstretched arm, and by great terrors, all of which the LORD, your God, did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?

35. Ces choses t'ont été montrées, afin quetu connusses que c'est Yahweh qui est Dieu, et qu'il n'y en apoint d'autre que lui

35. All this you were allowed to see that you might know the LORD is God and there is no other.

36.

36. Out of the heavens he let you hear his voice to discipline you; on earth he let you see his great fire, and you heard him speaking out of the fire.

37. Parce qu'il a aimé tes pères, il a choisi leurpostérité après eux, il t'a fait sortird'Egypte par sa présence, par sa grande puissance,

37. For love of your fathers he chose their descendants and personally led you out of Egypt by his great power,

38. pour chasser devant toi des nations plus nombreuses et plusfortes que toi, pour te faire entrer dans leur pays et te ledonner en héritage, comme tu le vois aujourd'hui.

38. driving out of your way nations greater and mightier than you, so as to bring you in and to make their land your heritage, as it is today.

39. Sache donc en ce jour et grave dans ton coeur que c'est Yahwehqui est Dieu, en haut dans le ciel et en bas sur la terre; il n'yen a point d'autre.

39. This is why you must now know, and fix in your heart, that the LORD is God in the heavens above and on earth below, and that there is no other.

40. Observe ses lois et ses commandements que je te prescrisaujourd'hui, afin que tu sois heureux, toi et tes enfantsaprès toi, et afin que tu prolonges tes jours, dans toutela suite des âges, sur la terre que te donne Yahweh , tonDieu.»

40. You must keep his statutes and commandments which I enjoin on you today, that you and your children after you may prosper, and that you may have long life on the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you forever."

41. Alors Moïse mit à part trois villes de l'autrecôté du Jourdain, à l'orient,

41. Then Moses set apart three cities in the region east of the Jordan,

42. afin qu'elles servissent de refuge au meurtrier qui auraittué son prochain par mégarde, sans avoirété auparavant son ennemi, et que, en seréfugiant dans l'une de ces villes, il sauvât savie.

42. that a homicide might take refuge there if he unwittingly killed his neighbor to whom he had previously borne no malice, and that he might save his life by fleeing to one of these cities:

43. Ce furent: Bosor, dans le désert, dans la plaine, pourles Rubénites; Ramoth, en Galaad, pour les Gadites, etGolan, en Basan pour les Manassites.

43. Bezer in the desert, in the region of the plateau, for the Reubenites; Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan for the Manassehites.

44. C'est ici la loi que Moïse mit devant les yeux desenfants d'Israël;

44. This is the law which Moses set before the Israelites.

45. -- ce sont les préceptes, les lois et les ordonnancesque Moïse donna aux enfants d'Israël lors de leursortie d'Egypte;

45. These are the ordinances, statutes and decrees which he proclaimed to them when they had come out of Egypt

46. -- de l'autre côté du Jourdain, dans lavallée, vis-à-vis de Beth-Phogor, au pays deSéhon, roi des Amorrhéens, qui habitait àHésebon, et qui avait été battu parMoïse et les enfants d'Israël, lors de leur sortied'Egypte.

46. and were beyond the Jordan in the ravine opposite Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon and whom Moses and the Israelites defeated after coming out of Egypt.

47. Ils prirent possession de son pays et de celui d'Og, roi deBasan, deux rois des Amorrhéens qui étaient audelà du Jourdain, à l'orient,

47. They occupied his land and the land of Og, king of Bashan, as well--the land of these two kings of the Amorites in the region east of the Jordan:

48. depuis Aroër sur le bord du torrent de l'Arnonjusqu'à la montagne de Sion, qui est l'Hermon, avec toutel'Arabah,

48. from Aroer on the edge of the Wadi Arnon to Mount Sion (that is Hermon)

49. de l'autre côté du Jourdain, à l'orient,jusqu'à la mer de l'Arabah, au pied du Phasga.

49. and all the Arabah east of the Jordan, as far as the Arabah Sea under the slopes of Pisgah.
