Deutéronome, 17

1. Tu ne sacrifieras à Yahweh, ton Dieu, ni boeuf niagneau, qui ait quelque défaut ou difformité; carc'est une abomination à Yahweh, ton Dieu.

1. "You shall not sacrifice to the LORD, your God, from the herd or from the flock an animal with any serious defect; that would be an abomination to the LORD, your God.

2. S'il se trouve au milieu de toi, dans l'une de tes villes queYahweh, ton Dieu, te donne, un homme ou une femme qui fasse cequi est mal aux yeux de Yahweh, ton Dieu, en transgressant sonalliance,

2. "If there is found among you, in any one of the communities which the LORD, your God, gives you, a man or a woman who does evil in the sight of the LORD, your God, and transgresses his covenant,

3. qui aille à d'autres dieux pour les servir et seprosterner devant eux, devant le soleil, ou la lune, ou toutel'armée du ciel, ce que je n'ai pas commandé,

3. by serving other gods, or by worshiping the sun or the moon or any of the host of the sky, against my command;

4. quand la chose t'aura été rapportée, quandtu l'auras appris, tu feras d'exactes recherches. Si le bruit estvrai et le fait bien établi, si cette abomination aété commise en Israël,

4. and if, on being informed of it, you find by careful investigation that it is true and an established fact that this abomination has been committed in Israel:

5. alors tu feras conduire aux portes de ta ville l'homme ou lafemme coupables de cette mauvaise action, l'homme ou la femme, tules lapideras jusqu'à ce qu'ils meurent.

5. you shall bring the man (or woman) who has done the evil deed out to your city gates and stone him to death.

6. Sur la parole de deux témoins ou de trois témoinson mettra à mort celui qui doit mourir; il ne sera pas misà mort sur la parole d'un seul témoin.

6. The testimony of two or three witnesses is required for putting a person to death; no one shall be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.

7. La main des témoins se lèvera la premièresur lui pour le faire mourir, et ensuite la main de tout lepeuple. Tu ôteras ainsi le mal du milieu de toi.

7. At the execution, the witnesses are to be the first to raise their hands against him; afterward all the people are to join in. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst.

8. Si une affaire relative à un meurtre, à unecontestation, à une blessure, --objets de litiges dans tesportes, -- te paraît trop difficile, tu te lèveraset tu monteras au lieu que Yahweh, ton Dieu, aura choisi.

8. "If in your own community there is a case at issue which proves too complicated for you to decide, in a matter of bloodshed or of civil rights or of personal injury, you shall then go up to the place which the LORD, your God, chooses,

9. Tu iras trouver les prêtres lévitiques; et le jugeen fonction à ce moment; tu les consulteras, et ils teferont connaître ce qui est conforme au droit.

9. to the levitical priests or to the judge who is in office at that time. They shall study the case and then hand down to you their decision.

10. Tu agiras d'après la sentence qu'ils t'auront faitconnaître dans le lieu que Yahweh aura choisi, et tu aurassoin d'agir selon tout ce qu'ils enseigneront.

10. According to this decision that they give you in the place which the LORD chooses, you shall act, being careful to do exactly as they direct.

11. Tu agiras selon la loi qu'ils enseigneront, et selon lasentence qu'ils auront prononcée, sans te détournerni à droite ni à gauche de ce qu'ils t'auront faitconnaître.

11. You shall carry out the directions they give you and the verdict they pronounce for you, without turning aside to the right or to the left from the decision they hand down to you.

12. Celui qui, se laissant aller à l'orgueil, agira sansécouter le prêtre qui se tient là pour servirYahweh, ton Dieu, ou sans écouter le juge, sera puni demort.

12. Any man who has the insolence to refuse to listen to the priest who officiates there in the ministry of the LORD, your God, or to the judge, shall die. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst.

13. Ainsi tu ôteras le mal du milieu d'Israël; et toutle peuple en l'apprenant, craindra et ne se laissera plus allerà l'orgueil.

13. And all the people, on hearing of it, shall fear, and never again be so insolent.

14. Lorsque tu seras entré dans le pays que Yahweh, tonDieu, te donne, que tu en auras pris possession, et que tu yauras établi ta demeure, si tu dis : «Je veux mettreun roi sur moi, comme toutes les nations quim'entourent»,

14. "When you have come into the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you, and have occupied it and settled in it, should you then decide to have a king over you like all the surrounding nations,

15. tu mettras sur toi un roi que Yahweh, ton Dieu, aura choisi;c'est du milieu de tes frères que tu prendras un roi, pourl'établir sur toi; tu ne pourras pas te donner pour roi unétranger qui ne serait pas ton frère.

15. you shall set that man over you as your king whom the LORD, your God, chooses. He whom you set over you as king must be your kinsman; a foreigner, who is no kin of yours, you may not set over you.

16. Mais qu'il n'ait pas un grand nombre de chevaux, et qu'il neramène pas le peuple en Egypte pour avoir beaucoup dechevaux; car Yahweh vous a dit: «Vous ne retournerez plusdésormais par ce chemin-là.»

16. But he shall not have a great number of horses; nor shall he make his people go back again to Egypt to acquire them, against the LORD'S warning that you must never go back that way again.

17. Qu'il n'ait pas un grand nombre de femmes, de peur que soncoeur ne se détourne; qu'il ne fasse pas de grands amasd'argent et d'or.

17. Neither shall he have a great number of wives, lest his heart be estranged, nor shall he accumulate a vast amount of silver and gold.

18. Dès qu'il sera assis sur le trône de saroyauté, il écrira pour lui sur un livre une copiede cette loi, d'après l'exemplaire qui est chez lesprêtres lévitiques.

18. When he is enthroned in his kingdom, he shall have a copy of this law made from the scroll that is in the custody of the levitical priests.

19. Il l'aura avec lui et il y lira tous les jours de sa vie, afinqu'il apprenne à craindre Yahweh, son Dieu, àobserver toutes les paroles de cette loi et toutes cesordonnances en les mettant en pratique;

19. He shall keep it with him and read it all the days of his life that he may learn to fear the LORD, his God, and to heed and fulfill all the words of this law and these statutes.

20. pour que son coeur ne s'élève pas au-dessus deses frères, et qu'il ne se détourne descommandements ni à droite ni à gauche, afin qu'ilprolonge ses jours dans son royaume, lui et ses fils, au milieud'Israël.

20. Let him not become estranged from his countrymen through pride, nor turn aside to the right or to the left from these commandments. Then he and his descendants will enjoy a long reign in Israel.
