Deutéronome, 2

1. Changeant de direction, nous partîmes pour ledésert, par le chemin de la mer Rouge, comme Yahweh mel'avait ordonné, et nous tournâmes longtemps autourde la montagne de Séïr.

1. "When we did turn and proceed into the desert on the Red Sea road, as the LORD had commanded me, we circled around the highlands of Seir for a long time.

2. Et Yahweh me dit:

2. Finally the LORD said to me,

3. «Vous avez assez tourné autour de cette montagne;reprenez la direction du nord.

3. 'You have wandered round these highlands long enough; turn and go north.

4. Donne cet ordre au peuple: Vous allez passer sur lafrontière de vos frères, les enfants d'Esaü,qui habitent en Séïr.

4. Give this order to the people: You are now about to pass through the territory of your kinsmen, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. Though they are afraid of you, be very careful

5. Ils auront peur de vous; mais prenez bien garde d'avoir desdémêlés avec eux, car je ne vous donnerairien dans leur pays, pas même ce que peut couvrir la plantedu pied: j'ai donné à Esaü la montagne deSéïr en propriété.

5. not to come in conflict with them, for I will not give you so much as a foot of their land, since I have already given Esau possession of the highlands of Seir.

6. Vous achèterez d'eux à prix d'argent lanourriture que vous mangerez, et vous achèterez d'euxà prix d'argent même l'eau que vous boirez.

6. You shall purchase from them with silver the food you eat and the well water you drink.

7. Car Yahweh ton Dieu t'a béni dans tout le travail de tesmains, il a connu ta marche à travers ce granddésert; voilà quarante ans que Yahweh, ton Dieu,est avec toi: tu n'as manqué de rien.»

7. The LORD, your God, has blessed you in all your undertakings; he has been concerned about your journey through this vast desert. It is now forty years that he has been with you, and you have never been in want.'

8. Nous passâmes donc à distance de nosfrères, les enfants d'Esaü, qui habitent enSéïr, nous éloignant du chemin de l'Arabah,d'Elath et d'Asiongaber; nous nous détournâmes etnous prîmes la direction du désert de Moab.

8. "Then we left behind us the Arabah route, Elath, Ezion-geber, and Seir, where our kinsmen, the descendants of Esau, live; and we went on toward the desert of Moab.

9. Yahweh me dit: «N'attaque pas Moab et n'engage pas decombat avec lui, car je ne te donnerai aucunne possession dansson pays: c'est aux enfants de Lot que j'ai donné Ar enpropriété.

9. And the LORD said to me, 'Do not show hostility to the Moabites or engage them in battle, for I will not give you possession of any of their land, since I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their own.

10. Les Emim y habitaient auparavant, peuple grand, nombreux et dehaute taille, comme les Enacim.

10. (Formerly the Emim lived there, a people strong and numerous and tall like the Anakim;

11. Eux aussi sont regardés comme des Rephaïm, demême que les Enacim; mais les Moabites les appellentEmim.

11. like them they were considered Rephaim. It was the Moabites who called them Emim.

12. En Séïr habitaient aussi jadis lesHorrhéens; mais les enfants d'Esaü leschassèrent et, les ayant détruits de devant eux,ils s'établirent à leur place, comme l'a faitIsraël pour le pays qu'il possède et que Yahweh lui adonné.

12. In Seir, however, the former inhabitants were the Horites; the descendants of Esau dispossessed them, clearing them out of the way and taking their place, just as the Israelites have done in the land of their heritage which the LORD has given them.)

13. Maintenant, levez-vous et passez le torrent de Zared.»Et nous passâmes le torrent de Zared.

13. Get ready, then, to cross the Wadi Zered.' So we crossed it.

14. Le temps que durèrent nos marches, deCadès-Barné au passage du torrent de Zared, fut detrente-huit ans, jusqu'à ce que toute lagénération des hommes de guerre eût disparudu milieu du camp, comme Yahweh le leur avait juré.

14. Thirty-eight years had elapsed between our departure from Kadesh-barnea and that crossing; in the meantime the whole generation of soldiers had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn they should.

15. La main de Yahweh fut aussi sur eux pour les détruiredu milieu du camp, jusqu'à ce qu'ils eussent disparu.

15. For it was the LORD'S hand that was against them, till he wiped them out of the camp completely.

16. Lorsque la mort eut fait disparaître tous les hommes deguerre du milieu du peuple,

16. "When at length death had put an end to all the soldiers among the people,

17. Yahweh me parla, en disant:

17. the LORD said to me,

18. «Tu vas passer aujourd'hui la frontière de Moab,Ar, et tu approcheras des enfants d'Ammon.

18. 'You are now about to leave Ar and the territory of Moab behind.

19. Ne les attaque pas et n'aie pas de démêlésavec eux, car je ne te donnerai aucune possession dans le paysdes enfants d'Ammon: c'est aux enfants de Lot que je l'aidonné en possession.

19. As you come opposite the Ammonites, do not show hostility or come in conflict with them, for I will not give you possession of any land of the Ammonites, since I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their own.

20. On regardait aussi ce pays comme un pays de Rephaïm; desRephaïm y habitaient auparavant, et les Ammonites lesappelaient Zomzommim:

20. (This also was considered a country of the Rephaim from its former inhabitants, whom the Ammonites called Zamzummim,

21. peuple grand, nombreux et de haute taille, comme les Enacim,Yahweh les détruisit devant les Ammonites, qui leschassèrent et s'établirent à leur place.

21. a people strong and numerous and tall like the Anakim. But these, too, the LORD cleared out of the way for the Ammonites, who ousted them and took their place.

22. C'est ainsi que fit Yahweh pour les enfants d'Esaü quihabitent en Séïr, lorsqu'il détruisit devanteux les Horrhéens; les ayant chassés, ilss'établirent à leur place jusqu'à cejour.

22. He had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who dwell in Seir, by clearing the Horites out of their way, so that the descendants of Esau have taken their place down to the present.

23. De même les Hévéens, qui habitaient dansdes villages jusqu'à Gaza, furent détruits par lesCaphtorim, qui étant sortis de Caphtor,s'établirent à leur place.

23. So also the Caphtorim, migrating from Caphtor, cleared away the Avvim, who once dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, and took their place.)

24. -- Levez-vous, partez et passez le torrent de l'Arnon. Voicique je livre entre tes mains Séhon, roi de Hésebon,Amorrhéens, ainsi que son pays. Commence à t'enemparer, engage le combat avec lui!

24. "'Advance now across the Wadi Arnon. I now deliver into your hands Sihon, the Amorite king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin the occupation; engage him in battle.

25. Dès aujourd'hui je vais répandre la frayeur etla crainte de ton nom sur tous les peuples qui sont sous tous lescieux, en sorte que, au bruit de ta renommée, ilstrembleront et seront dans l'angoisse à cause detoi.»

25. This day I will begin to put a fear and dread of you into every nation under the heavens, so that at the mention of your name they will quake and tremble before you.'

26. Du désert de Cademoth, j'envoyai des messagers àSéhon, roi de Hésebon, avec des paroles de paix,lui faisant dire:

26. "So I sent messengers from the desert of Kedemoth to Sihon, king of Heshbon, with this offer of peace:

27. «Que je puisse passer par ton pays; je suivrai le grandchemin, sans m'écarter ni à droite ni àgauche.

27. 'Let me pass through your country by the highway; I will go along it without turning aside to the right or to the left.

28. Tu me vendras à prix d'argent la nourriture que jemangerai, et tu me donneras à prix d'argent l'eau que jeboirai; je ne veux que passer avec mes pieds:

28. For the food I eat which you will supply, and for the water you give me to drink, you shall be paid in silver. Only let me march through,

29. -- C'est ce qu'on fait pour moi les enfants d'Esaü quihabitent en Séïr, et les Moabites qui habitentà Ar: -- jusqu'à ce que je passe le Jourdain pourentrer dans le pays que Yahweh, notre Dieu, nousdonne.»

29. as the descendants of Esau who dwell in Seir and the Moabites who dwell in Ar have done, until I cross the Jordan into the land which the LORD, our God, is about to give us.'

30. Mais Séhon, roi de Hésebon, ne voulut pas nouslaisser passer chez lui, car Yahweh, ton Dieu, avait endurci sonesprit et rendu son coeur inflexible, afin de le livrer entre tesmains, comme tu le vois aujourd'hui.

30. But Sihon, king of Heshbon, refused to let us pass through his land, because the LORD, your God, made him stubborn in mind and obstinate in heart that he might deliver him up to you, as indeed he has now done.

31. Yahweh me dit: «Voici que j'ai commencé de telivrer Séhon et son pays. Commence à leconquérir afin de prendre possession de sonpays.»

31. "Then the LORD said to me, 'Now that I have already begun to hand over to you Sihon and his land, begin the actual occupation.'

32. Séhon sortit à notre rencontre, avec tout sonpeuple, pour nous livrer bataille à Jasa.

32. So Sihon and all his people advanced against us to join battle at Jahaz;

33. Et Yahweh, notre Dieu, nous le livra et nous lebattîmes, lui et ses fils, et tout son peuple.

33. but since the LORD, our God, had delivered him to us, we defeated him and his sons and all his people.

34. Nous prîmes alors toutes ses villes et nousdévouâmes par anathème tout ville, leshommes, les femmes et les enfants, sans en laisseréchapper un seul.

34. At that time we seized all his cities and doomed them all, with their men, women and children; we left no survivor.

35. Seulement, nous pillâmes pour nous le bétail etle butin des villes que nous avions prises.

35. Our only booty was the livestock and the loot of the captured cities.

36. Depuis Aroër qui est sur le bord de la valléed'Arnon, et depuis la ville qui est dans la vallée,jusqu'à Galaad, il n'y eut pas de ville trop inaccessiblepour nous; Yahweh, notre Dieu, nous les livra toutes.

36. From Aroer on the edge of the Wadi Arnon and from the city in the wadi itself, as far as Gilead, no city was too well fortified for us to whom the LORD had delivered them up.

37. Mais tu n'approchas pas du pays des enfants d'Ammon, nid'aucun endroit qui est sur le bord du torrent de Jaboc, ni desvilles de la montagne, ni d'aucun des lieux dont Yahweh, notreDieu, t'avait défendu de t'emparer.

37. However, in obedience to the command of the LORD, our God, you did not encroach upon any of the Ammonite land, neither the region bordering on the Wadi Jabbok, nor the cities of the highlands.
