I Macabeus, 13

1. Simão ouviu dizer que Trifão tinha levantado um grande exército, para vir á terra de Judá e assolá-la.

1. Simon heard that Trypho had collected a large army to invade and devastate Judaea,

2. Vendo que o povo estava todo amedrontado e espavorido, subiu a Jerusalém, mandou juntar o povo,

2. and when he saw how the people were quaking with fear, he went up to Jerusalem, called the people together,

3. e, para o animar, disse: Sabeis quanto temos pelejado, eu e meus irmãos e a casa de meu pai, pelas nossas leis e pelo santuário, e em que angústias nos temos visto;

3. and exhorted them thus, 'You know yourselves how much I and my brothers and my father's family have done for the laws and the sanctuary; you know what wars and hardships we have experienced.

4. por esta causa morreram todos os meus irmãos, por (quererem salvar) Israel, e fiquei eu só.

4. That is why my brothers are all dead, for Israel's sake, and I am the only one left.

5. Mas não permita Deus agora que queira eu poupar a minha vida, enquanto durarem as nossas tribulações, porque não sou melhor que meus irmãos.

5. Far be it from me, then, to be sparing of my own life in any time of oppression, for I am not worth more than my brothers.

6. Vingarei, pois, a minha nação, o santuário, os nossos filhos e as nossas mulheres, porque todas as nações se juntaram para nos oprimirem, pelo ódio que nos têm.

6. Rather will I avenge my nation and the sanctuary and your wives and children, now that the foreigners are all united in malice to destroy us.'

7. O espírito do povo, assim que ouviu estas palavras, ficou todo inflamado.

7. The people's spirit rekindled as they listened to his words,

8. (Imediatamente) todos responderam em alta voz, dizendo: Tu és o nosso chefe em lugar de Judas e de Jónatas, teu Irmão;

8. and they shouted back at him, 'You are our leader in place of Judas and your brother Jonathan.

9. dirige as nossas batalhas, e nós faremos tudo o que nos disseres.

9. Fight our battles for us, and we will do whatever you tell us.'

10. Então Simão, reunindo todos os homens de guerra, fez acabar com presteza todos os muros de Jerusalém e fortificou a sua cerca.

10. So he assembled all the fighting men and hurried on with completing the walls of Jerusalem, fortifying the whole perimeter.

11. Ao mesmo tempo, enviou Jónatas, filho de Absalão, com um forte exército, a Jope. Jónatas, tendo deitado fora os que estavam dentro dela, deixou-se lá ficar (com suas tropas).

11. He sent a considerable force to Joppa under Jonathan son of Absalom who drove out the inhabitants and remained there in occupation.

12. Trifão, entretanto, partiu de Ptolemaida, com um grande exército, para invadir a terra de Judá, levando consigo Jónatas, prisioneiro.

12. Trypho now left Ptolemais with a large army to invade Judaea, taking Jonathan with him under guard.

13. Simão acampou perto de Adida, defronte da planície.

13. Simon pitched camp in Adida, facing the plain.

14. Trifão, logo que soube que Simão tinha tomado o comando, em lugar de seu irmão Jónatas, e que se dispunha a dar-lhe batalha, mandou-lhe embaixadores,

14. When Trypho learned that Simon had taken the place of his brother Jonathan and that he intended to join battle with him, he sent envoys to him with this message,

15. a dizer: Pelo dinheiro que teu irmão Jónatas deve à fazenda real, por causa dos negócios que estavam ao seu cuidado, é que o retemos prisioneiro.

15. 'Your brother Jonathan was in debt to the royal exchequer for the offices he held; that is why we are detaining him.

16. Envia-me, portanto, agora cem talentos de prata e dois de seus filhos como reféns, para que ele, sendo posto em liberdade, não fuja do nosso partido, e nós to remeteremos.

16. If you send a hundred talents of silver and two of his sons as hostages, to make sure that on his release he does not revolt against us, we shall release him.'

17. Simão, ainda que conheceu que Trifão lhe falava assim para o enganar, mandou todavia que se lhe levasse o dinheiro com os filhos, para não atrair contra si o ódio do povo de Israel, que poderia dizer:

17. Although Simon was aware that the message was a ruse, he sent for the money and the boys for fear of incurring great hostility from the people,

18. Porque não lhe enviou dinheiro e os filhos, por isso é que Jónatas pereceu.

18. who would have said that Jonathan had died because Simon would not send Trypho the money and the children.

19. Mandou-lhe, pois, os filhos e os cem talentos, mas Trifão faltou à palavra e não remeteu Jónatas.

19. He therefore sent both the boys and the hundred talents, but Trypho broke his word and did not release Jonathan.

20. Depois disto, dirigiu-se Trifão à terra (de Judá) para a calcar e assolar, dando volta pelo caminho que vai a Adora, mas Simão e o seu exército seguiam-no por toda a parte, para onde ele ia.

20. Next, Trypho set about the invasion and devastation of the country; he made a detour along the Adora road, but Simon and his army confronted him wherever he attempted to go.

21. Então os que estavam na cidadela (de Jerusalém) mandaram por uns mensageiros dizer a Trifão que se apressasse em vir pelo deserto e que lhes enviasse víveres.

21. The men in the Citadel kept sending messengers to Trypho, urging him to get through to them by way of the desert and send them supplies.

22. Trifão dispôs toda a cavalaria para partir aquela mesma noite, mas tinha caído muita neve, e não pôde lá ir; avançou entretanto para o território de Galaad.

22. Trypho organised his entire cavalry to go, but that night it snowed so heavily that he could not get through for the snow, so he left there and moved off into Gilead.

23. Estando perto de Bascama, matou ali Jónatas e sepultou-o.

23. As he approached Baskama he killed Jonathan, who was buried there.

24. Depois Trifão voltou para a sua terra.

24. Trypho turned back and regained his own country.

25. Simão mandou buscar os ossos de seu irmão Jónatas e sepultou-os em Modin, que era a cidade de seus pais.

25. Simon sent and recovered the bones of his brother Jonathan, and buried him in Modein, the town of his ancestors.

26. Todo Israel tomou grande dó pela sua morte e pranteou-o durante muitos dias.

26. All Israel kept solemn mourning for him and long bewailed him.

27. Simão levantou sobre o sepulcro de seu pai e de seus irmãos um alto monumento, que se via de longe, cujas pedras eram polidas por detrás e por diante.

27. Over the tomb of his father and brothers, Simon raised a monument high enough to catch the eye, using dressed stone back and front.

28. E levantou sete pirâmides, uma em frente da outra, a seu pai, a sua mãe e a seus quatro irmãos.

28. He erected seven pyramids facing each other, for his father and mother and his four brothers,

29. Pôs-lhes ornatos e à roda delas colocou grandes colunas; sobre estas colunas, armas, e ao pé das armas, navios esculpidos, que fossem vistos de longe por todos os que navegavam pelo mar.

29. surrounding them with a structure consisting of tall columns surmounted by trophies of arms to their everlasting memory and, beside the trophies of arms, ships sculpted on a scale to be seen by all who sail the sea.

30. Tal é o sepulcro, que levantou em Modin, o qual ainda hoje existe.

30. Such was the monument he constructed at Modein, and it is still there today.

31. Trifão, procedendo dolosamente com o jovem rei Antíoco, deu-lhe a morte.

31. Now Trypho, betraying the trust of young King Antiochus, put him to death.

32. Reinou em lugar dele e pôs sobre a cabeça o diadema da Ásia, causando grandes males em todo o país.

32. He usurped his throne, assuming the crown of Asia, and brought great havoc on the country.

33. Simão, entretanto, reparou as praças da Judeia, fortificando-as de altas torres, de grandes muros, de portas e ferrolhos, e abasteceu-as de víveres,

33. Simon built up the fortresses of Judaea, surrounding them with high towers, great walls and gates with bolts, and stocked these fortresses with food.

34. Escolheu Simão alguns homens que enviou ao rei Demétrio, pedindo-lhe que libertasse de impostos a Judeia, porque todo o procedimento de Trifão não tinha sido mais do que uma rapina.

34. He also sent a delegation to King Demetrius, to get him to grant the province a remission, since all Trypho did was to despoil.

35. O rei Demétrio respondeu a este pedido, escrevendo-lhe a carta seguinte:

35. King Demetrius replied to his request in a letter framed as follows:

36. O rei Demétrio, a Simão, sumo sacerdote e amigo dos reis, aos anciães e ao povo dos Judeus, saúde.

36. 'King Demetrius to Simon, high priest and Friend of Kings, and to the elders and nation of the Jews, greetings.

37. Recebemos a coroa de ouro e a palma, que nos mandastes, e estamos prontos a fazer convosco uma paz sólida e a escrever aos funcionários que vos dispensem dos impostos.

37. 'It has pleased us to accept the golden crown and the palm you have sent us, and we are disposed to make a general peace with you, and to write to the officials to grant you remissions.

38. Tudo o que temos ordenado em vosso favor, continua válido. As fortalezas que edificastes, sejam vossas.

38. Everything that we have decreed concerning you remains in force, and the fortresses you have built may remain in your hands.

39. Também vos perdoamos as faltas e erros em que podeis ter caído até ao dia de hoje, assim como a coroa que devíeis; e, se qualquer outro imposto nos era pago em Jerusalém, não se tome ele mais a pagar.

39. We pardon all offences, unwitting or intentional, hitherto committed, and remit the crown tax you now owe us; and whatever other taxes were levied in Jerusalem are no longer to be levied.

40. Se entre vós há alguns que sejam capazes de se alistar nas nossas tropas, alistem-se e haja entre nós paz.

40. If any of you are suitable for enrolment in our bodyguard, let them be enrolled, and let there be peace between us.'

41. Com isto, no ano cento e setenta, foi tirado o jugo dos gentios a Israel.

41. The gentile yoke was thus lifted from Israel in the year 170,

42. E o povo de Israel começou a escrever nos documentos e contratos: No primeiro ano de Simão, sumo pontífice, general e chefe dos Judeus.

42. when our people began engrossing their documents and contracts: 'In the first year of Simon, eminent high priest, commander-in-chief and ethnarch of the Jews'.

43. Naqueles dias Simão acampou junto de Gaza que sitiou com o seu exército. Levantou máquinas, aproximou-as da cidade, atacou uma das torres e apoderou-se dela.

43. About that time Simon laid siege to Gezer, surrounding it with his troops. He constructed a mobile tower, brought it up to the city, opened a breach in one of the bastions and took it.

44. Os que estavam numa destas máquinas atiraram-se sobre a cidade, o que aí causou grande confusão.

44. The men in the mobile tower sprang out into the city, where great confusion ensued.

45. Os habitantes subiram às muralhas com suas mulheres e filhos, rasgadas as suas vestes, e clamaram em altos gritos, pedindo a Simão que lhes desse a sua mão direita.

45. The citizens, accompanied by their wives and children, mounted the ramparts with their garments torn and loudly implored Simon to make peace with them:

46. Diziam: Não nos trates segundo a nossa maldade, mas segundo a tua clemência.

46. 'Treat us', they said, 'not as our wickedness deserves, but as your mercy prompts you.'

47. Movido Simão de piedade, não os combateu mais; contudo lançou-os fora da cidade, purificou as casas em que havia ídolos, e então é que entrou nela, entre hinos de louvor e cânticos de acção de graças.

47. Simon came to terms with them and stopped the fighting; but he expelled them from the city, purified the houses which contained idols, and then made his entry with songs of praise.

48. Depois de tiradas da cidade todas as imundícies (idolátricas) pôs nela homens que observassem a lei; a seguir fortificou-a e fez nela habitação para si.

48. He banished all impurity from it, settled in it people who observed the Law, and having fortified it, built a residence there for himself.

49. Entretanto os ocupantes da cidadela de Jerusalém, que não podiam sair à região (vizinha), para comprar ou vender, viram-se reduzidos a uma grande fome, e muitos deles morreram à míngua.

49. The occupants of the Citadel in Jerusalem, prevented as they were from coming out and going into the countryside to buy and sell, were in desperate need of food, and numbers of them were being carried off by starvation.

50. Gritaram a Simão, pedindo-lhe paz, e ele lha concedeu; contudo lançou-os fora da fortaleza e purificou-a de todas as contaminações.

50. They begged Simon to make peace with them, and he granted this, though he expelled them and purified the Citadel from its pollutions.

51. Entrou nela no dia vinte e três do segundo mês, no ano cento e setenta e um, entoando louvores, levando ramos de palmas, ao toque de harpas, de címbalos, de liras, e cantando hinos e cânticos, por ter sido exterminado de Israel um grande inimigo.

51. The Jews made their entry on the twenty-third day of the second month in the year 171, with acclamations and carrying palms, to the sound of lyres, cymbals and harps, chanting hymns and canticles, since a great enemy had been crushed and thrown out of Israel. Simon made it a day of annual rejoicing.

52. (Simão) ordenou que todos os anos se celebrasse este dia com alegria.

52. He fortified the Temple hill on the Citadel side, and took up residence there with his men.

53. Fortificou também o monte do templo, que era perto da cidadela, e habitou ali com os seus.

53. Since his son John had come to manhood, Simon appointed him general-in-chief, with his residence in Gezer.
