2 Samuel, 3

22. Just then, David's men and Joab arrived from a raid taking along with them a great deal of booty. Abner was no longer with David at Hebron for he had departed quietly after David had dismissed him.

2 Samuel 3:27 - "When Abner returned to Hebron, Joabe took him to the middle of the door, as if he wanted to talk to him in particular, and there injured him in his belly. And Abner died from the blood of Asael, brother of Joab. " This verse describes Abner's death in the hands of Joab, an important event in the struggle for power.

2 Samuel 3:37 - "All the people and all Israel understood that day that it had not been by the will of the king that Abner, son of Ner, had been dead." This verse shows that Abner's death was an act of Joab, not David.

2 Samuel 3:39 - "And King David cried for Abner and said, 'Today a great man died in Israel.'" This verse shows that even David, who was fighting Abner, recognized his skills and lamented his death.
