Luc, 23

1. Alors toute l'assemblée s'étant levée, ils le menèrent à Pilate;

1. Then the whole assembly of them arose and brought him before Pilate.

2. et ils se mirent à l'accuser, en disant : " Nous avons trouvé que cet homme détourne notre nation en l'empêchant de payer les impôts à César et en disant de lui-même qu'il est Christ-roi. "

2. They brought charges against him, saying, "We found this man misleading our people; he opposes the payment of taxes to Caesar and maintains that he is the Messiah, a king."

3. Pilate l'interrogea, disant : " Es-tu le roi des Juifs? " Jésus lui répondit : " Tu le dis. "

3. Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He said to him in reply, "You say so."

4. Pilate dit aux grands prêtres et aux foules : " Je ne trouve rien de coupable en cet homme. "

4. Pilate then addressed the chief priests and the crowds, "I find this man not guilty."

5. Mais eux insistaient avec force, disant : " Il soulève le peuple, enseignant par toute la Judée, depuis la Galilée, où il a commencé, jusqu'ici. "

5. But they were adamant and said, "He is inciting the people with his teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he began even to here."

6. A ces mots, Pilate demanda si l'homme était Galiléen;

6. On hearing this Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean;

7. et apprenant qu'il était de la juridiction d'Hérode, il le renvoya à Hérode, qui, lui aussi, était à Jérusalem en ces jours-là.

7. and upon learning that he was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod who was in Jerusalem at that time.

8. Hérode, en voyant Jésus, se réjouit fort, car depuis longtemps il avait le désir de le voir, pour ce qu'il entendait dire de lui, et il espérait lui voir faire quelque miracle.

8. Herod was very glad to see Jesus; he had been wanting to see him for a long time, for he had heard about him and had been hoping to see him perform some sign.

9. Il lui adressa beaucoup de questions, mais lui ne répondit rien.

9. He questioned him at length, but he gave him no answer.

10. Or les grands prêtres et les scribes se trouvaient là, l'accusant avec force.

10. The chief priests and scribes, meanwhile, stood by accusing him harshly.

11. Hérode le traita avec mépris, ainsi que ses hommes d'armes, se moqua de lui et, après l'avoir revêtu d'un vêtement de couleur éclatante, il le renvoya à Pilate.

11. (Even) Herod and his soldiers treated him contemptuously and mocked him, and after clothing him in resplendent garb, he sent him back to Pilate.

12. En ce jour même, Hérode et Pilate devinrent amis, eux qui auparavant étaient en inimitié entre eux.

12. Herod and Pilate became friends that very day, even though they had been enemies formerly.

13. Pilate, ayant convoqué les grands prêtres, les chefs et le peuple,

13. Pilate then summoned the chief priests, the rulers, and the people

14. leur dit : " Vous m'avez amené cet homme comme détournant le peuple; or j'ai instruit l'affaire devant vous et je n'ai rien trouvé de coupable en cet homme quant aux choses dont vous l'accusez;

14. and said to them, "You brought this man to me and accused him of inciting the people to revolt. I have conducted my investigation in your presence and have not found this man guilty of the charges you have brought against him,

15. ni Hérode non plus, car il nous l'a renvoyé; c'est bien qu'il n'a rien fait qui mérite la mort.

15. nor did Herod, for he sent him back to us. So no capital crime has been committed by him.

16. Je le relâcherai donc après l'avoir fait châtier. "

16. Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him."

17. Or il était obligé, à chaque fête, de leur relâcher quelqu'un.

18. Mais tous ensemble ils crièrent : " Fais mourir celui-ci, et relâche-nous Barabbas ! "

18. But all together they shouted out, "Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us."

19. lequel était en prison à cause d'une sédition qui avait eu lieu dans la ville et d'un meurtre.

19. (Now Barabbas had been imprisoned for a rebellion that had taken place in the city and for murder.)

20. Et de nouveau Pilate, qui désirait relâcher Jésus, s'adressa à eux;

20. Again Pilate addressed them, still wishing to release Jesus,

21. mais ils clamaient, disant : " Crucifie ! crucifie-le ! "

21. but they continued their shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!"

22. Pour la troisième fois, il leur dit : " Qu'a-t-il donc fait de mal? Je n'ai rien trouvé en lui qui mérite la mort. Donc, après l'avoir fait châtier, je le relâcherai. "

22. Pilate addressed them a third time, "What evil has this man done? I found him guilty of no capital crime. Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him."

23. Mais ils insistaient avec de grands cris, demandant qu'il fût crucifié, et leurs cris allaient grandissant.

23. With loud shouts, however, they persisted in calling for his crucifixion, and their voices prevailed.

24. Alors Pilate décréta qu'il serait fait selon leur demande.

24. The verdict of Pilate was that their demand should be granted.

25. Il relâcha celui qui avait été mis en prison pour sédition et meurtre, qu'ils demandaient, et il livra Jésus à leur volonté.

25. So he released the man who had been imprisoned for rebellion and murder, for whom they asked, and he handed Jesus over to them to deal with as they wished.

26. Comme ils l'emmenaient, ils saisirent un certain Simon de Cyrène, qui revenait de la campagne, et ils le chargèrent de la croix, pour qu'il la portât derrière Jésus.

26. As they led him away they took hold of a certain Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country; and after laying the cross on him, they made him carry it behind Jesus.

27. Or, il était suivi d'une grande masse du peuple et de femmes qui se frappaient la poitrine et se lamentaient sur lui.

27. A large crowd of people followed Jesus, including many women who mourned and lamented him.

28. Se tournant vers elles, Jésus dit : " Filles de Jérusalem, ne pleurez pas sur moi, mais pleurez sur vous-mêmes et sur vos enfants,

28. Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children,

29. car voici venir des jours où l'on dira : Heureuses les stériles, et les entrailles qui n'ont point enfanté et les mamelles qui n'ont point allaité !

29. for indeed, the days are coming when people will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.'

30. Alors on se mettra à dire aux montagnes : Tombez sur nous ! et aux collines : Recouvrez-nous !

30. At that time people will say to the mountains, 'Fall upon us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us!'

31. Car, si l'on traite ainsi le bois vert, qu'en sera-t-il du sec? "

31. for if these things are done when the wood is green what will happen when it is dry?"

32. On menait aussi deux autres, des malfaiteurs, pour être exécutés avec lui.

32. Now two others, both criminals, were led away with him to be executed.

33. Lorsqu'ils furent arrivés au lieu appelé Calvaire, ils l'y crucifièrent, ainsi que les malfaiteurs, l'un à droite, l'autre à gauche.

33. When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and the criminals there, one on his right, the other on his left.

34. Et Jésus disait : " Père, pardonnez-leur, car ils ne savent pas ce qu'ils font. " Et se partageant ses vêtements, ils les tirèrent au sort.

34. (Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.") They divided his garments by casting lots.

35. Le peuple se tenait là et regardait. Même les chefs raillaient, disant : " Il en a sauvé d'autres, qu'il se sauve lui-même, s'il est le Christ de Dieu, l'Elu ! "

35. The people stood by and watched; the rulers, meanwhile, sneered at him and said, "He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Messiah of God."

36. Les soldats aussi se moquèrent de lui, s'avançant pour lui présenter du vinaigre, et disant :

36. Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine

37. " Si tu es le roi des Juifs, sauve-toi toi-même ! "

37. they called out, "If you are King of the Jews, save yourself."

38. Il y avait aussi au-dessus de lui une inscription en caractères grecs, latins et hébraïques : " Celui-ci est le roi des Juifs. "

38. Above him there was an inscription that read, "This is the King of the Jews."

39. Or, l'un des malfaiteurs, mis en croix l'injuriait, disant : " N'es-tu pas le Christ? Sauve-toi toi-même et sauve-nous ! "

39. Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us."

40. Mais l'autre le reprenait, disant : " Tu n'as pas même la crainte de Dieu, toi qui subis la même condamnation !

40. The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, "Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation?

41. Pour nous, c'est justice, car nous recevons ce que méritent les choses que nous avons faites; mais lui n'a rien fait de mal. "

41. And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal."

42. Et il dit : " Jésus, souvenez-vous de moi, quand vous reviendrez avec votre royauté. "

42. Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."

43. Et il lui dit : " Je te le dis en vérité, aujourd'hui tu seras avec moi dans le paradis. "

43. He replied to him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

44. Il était alors environ la sixième heure, et il se fit des ténèbres sur la terre entière jusqu'à la neuvième heure,

44. It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon

45. le soleil s'étant éclipsé, et le voile du sanctuaire se fendit par le milieu.

45. because of an eclipse of the sun. Then the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.

46. Et Jésus clama d'une voix forte : " Père, je remets mon esprit entre vos mains. " Et, ce disant, il expira.

46. Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit"; and when he had said this he breathed his last.

47. Le centurion, ayant vu ce qui s'était passé, glorifia Dieu, disant : " Réellement, cet homme était un juste. "

47. The centurion who witnessed what had happened glorified God and said, "This man was innocent beyond doubt."

48. Et toutes les foules rassemblées à ce spectacle, après voir regardé ce qui s'était passé, s'en retournaient en se frappant la poitrine.

48. When all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts;

49. Tous ceux de sa connaissance se tenaient à distance, ainsi que les femmes qui l'avaient suivi depuis la Galilée, pour voir (tout) cela.

49. but all his acquaintances stood at a distance, including the women who had followed him from Galilee and saw these events.

50. Et alors un homme, nommé Joseph, qui était membre du conseil, homme bon et juste, 51 ? il n'avait donné son assentiment à leur résolution ni à leur acte, ? d'Arimathie, ville juive, qui attendait le royaume de Dieu,

50. Now there was a virtuous and righteous man named Joseph who, though he was a member of the council,

51. had not consented to their plan of action. He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea and was awaiting the kingdom of God.

52. cet (homme) alla trouver Pilate pour lui demander le corps de Jésus;

52. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

53. il le descendit, l'enveloppa d'un linceul, et le déposa dans un sépulcre taillé dans le roc, où personne n'avait encore été mis.

53. After he had taken the body down, he wrapped it in a linen cloth and laid him in a rock-hewn tomb in which no one had yet been buried.

54. C'était le jour de Préparation, et le sabbat commençait.

54. It was the day of preparation, and the sabbath was about to begin.

55. Ayant suivi (Joseph), les femmes qui étaient venues de la Galilée avec (Jésus), considérèrent le sépulcre et comment son corps (y) avait été déposé.

55. The women who had come from Galilee with him followed behind, and when they had seen the tomb and the way in which his body was laid in it,

56. S'en étant retournées, elles préparèrent des aromates et des parfums; et, pendant le sabbat, elles demeurèrent en repos, selon le précepte.

56. they returned and prepared spices and perfumed oils. Then they rested on the sabbath according to the commandment.
