Luc, 14

1. Un jour de sabbat, comme il était entré dans la maison d'un chef des Pharisiens pour y manger, eux le guettaient.

1. On a sabbath he went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully.

2. Et voici qu'un homme hydropique se trouvait devant lui.

2. In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy.

3. Et Jésus, prenant la parole, dit aux docteurs de la Loi et aux Pharisiens : " Est-il permis de guérir le jour du sabbat, ou non? "

3. Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking, "Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?"

4. Mais ils gardaient le silence. L'ayant pris, il le guérit et le congédia.

4. But they kept silent; so he took the man and, after he had healed him, dismissed him.

5. Puis, il leur dit : " Qui d'entre vous, si son fils ou son b?uf tombe dans un puits, ne l'en retire pas aussitôt, un jour du sabbat?"

5. Then he said to them, "Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?"

6. Et à cela ils ne purent répliquer.

6. But they were unable to answer his question.

7. Et il dit une parabole aux invités, ayant remarqué comment ils choisissaient les premières places. Il leur dit :

7. He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table.

8. " Quand tu seras invité par quelqu'un à un repas de noces, ne te mets pas à la première place : un homme plus considérable que toi pourrait avoir été invité par lui,

8. "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him,

9. et celui qui vous aurait invités l'un et l'autre viendrait te dire : " Cède-lui la place, " et alors tu n'aurais, avec confusion, qu'à occuper la dernière place.

9. and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, 'Give your place to this man,' and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place.

10. Mais, quand tu es invité, va te mettre à la dernière place; de cette façon, quand viendra celui qui t'a invité, il te dira : " Mon ami, avance plus haut. " Alors ce sera pour toi un honneur devant tous les convives.

10. Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to you he may say, 'My friend, move up to a higher position.' Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table.

11. Car quiconque s'élève sera abaissé, et quiconque s'abaisse sera élevé. "

11. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

12. Il disait à celui qui l'avait invité : " Lorsque tu donnes un déjeuner ou un dîner, ne convoque pas tes amis, ni tes frères, ni tes parents, ni des voisins riches, de peur qu'ils ne t'invitent à leur tour et que ce ne soit pour toi un rendu.

12. Then he said to the host who invited him, "When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment.

13. Mais, quand tu donnes un festin, invite des pauvres, des estropiés, des boiteux, des aveugles;

13. Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;

14. et heureux seras-tu de ce qu'ils n'ont pas de quoi te rendre, car cela te sera rendu lors de la résurrection des justes. "

14. blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

15. Un des convives, ayant entendu cela, lui dit : " Heureux qui mangera dans le royaume de Dieu ! "

15. One of his fellow guests on hearing this said to him, "Blessed is the one who will dine in the kingdom of God."

16. Il lui dit : " Un homme faisait un grand dîner, auquel il avait invité beaucoup de gens.

16. He replied to him, "A man gave a great dinner to which he invited many.

17. Et à l'heure du dîner, il envoya son serviteur dire aux invités : " Venez, car tout est déjà prêt. "

17. When the time for the dinner came, he dispatched his servant to say to those invited, 'Come, everything is now ready.'

18. Et tous, unanimement, se mirent à s'excuser. Le premier lui dit : " J'ai acheté un champ, et il faut nécessairement que j'aille le voir; je te prie, tiens-moi pour excusé. "

18. But one by one, they all began to excuse themselves. The first said to him, 'I have purchased a field and must go to examine it; I ask you, consider me excused.'

19. Et un autre dit : " J'ai acheté cinq paires de b?ufs, et je vais les essayer; je te prie, tiens-moi pour excusé. "

19. And another said, 'I have purchased five yoke of oxen and am on my way to evaluate them; I ask you, consider me excused.'

20. Et un autre dit : " J'ai pris femme, et c'est pourquoi je ne puis venir. "

20. And another said, 'I have just married a woman, and therefore I cannot come.'

21. Le serviteur s'en revint et rapporta cela à son maître. Alors le maître de maison, irrité, dit à son serviteur : " Va-t'en vite sur les places et par les rues de la ville, et amène ici les pauvres, les estropiés, les aveugles et les boiteux. "

21. The servant went and reported this to his master. Then the master of the house in a rage commanded his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in here the poor and the crippled, the blind and the lame.'

22. Et le serviteur (revint) dire : " Maître, ce que vous avez commandé a été fait, et il y a encore de la place. "

22. The servant reported, 'Sir, your orders have been carried out and still there is room.'

23. Et le maître dit au serviteur : " Va-t'en par le chemins et aux clôtures, et contrains (les gens) à entrer, afin que ma maison soit remplie.

23. The master then ordered the servant, 'Go out to the highways and hedgerows and make people come in that my home may be filled.

24. Car, je vous le dis, aucun de ces hommes qui avaient été invités ne goûtera à mon dîner. "

24. For, I tell you, none of those men who were invited will taste my dinner.'"

25. Comme des foules nombreuses cheminaient avec lui, il se retourna et leur dit :

25. Great crowds were traveling with him, and he turned and addressed them,

26. " Si quelqu'un vient à moi et ne hait pas son père, sa mère, sa femme, ses enfants, ses frères et ses s?urs, et même sa propre vie, il ne peut être mon disciple.

26. "If any one comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

27. Quiconque ne porte pas sa croix et ne me suis pas, ne peut pas être mon disciple.

27. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

28. Qui de vous, en effet, s'il veut bâtir une tour, ne s'assied d'abord pour calculer la dépense, (pour voir) s'il a de quoi l'achever?

28. Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion?

29. De peur qu'ayant posé le fondement et ne pouvant pas terminer, tous ceux qui verront (cela) ne se mettent à le ridiculiser,

29. Otherwise, after laying the foundation and finding himself unable to finish the work the onlookers should laugh at him

30. disant : " Cet homme a commencé à bâtir, et il n'a pu terminer ! "

30. and say, 'This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.'

31. Ou quel roi, s'il va faire la guerre à un autre roi, ne s'assied d'abord pour délibérer s'il est capable de se heurter, avec dix mille hommes, à celui qui vient contre lui avec vingt mille?

31. Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down and decide whether with ten thousand troops he can successfully oppose another king advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops?

32. But if not, while he is still far away, he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms.

33. Ainsi donc, quiconque d'entre vous ne renonce pas à tout ce qu'il possède ne peut être mon disciple.

33. In the same way, everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.

34. [Certes] le sel est bon; mais si le sel s'affadit, avec quoi l'assaisonnera-t-on?

34. "Salt is good, but if salt itself loses its taste, with what can its flavor be restored?

35. Inutile et pour la terre et pour le fumier, on le jette dehors. Qui a des oreilles pour entendre entende ! "

35. It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out. Whoever has ears to hear ought to hear."
