Liber Thobis, 8

1. Et, cum consummaverunt man ducare et bibere, voluerunt dor mire et deduxerunt iuvenem et induxerunt eum in cubiculum.

1. When they had finished eating, they escorted Tobias in to her.

2. Et rememoratus est Thobias sermonum Raphael et sustulit de saccello, quem habebat, cor et iecur piscis et imposuit super cinerem incensi.

2. As he went he remembered the words of Raphael, and he took the live ashes of incense and put the heart and liver of the fish upon them and made a smoke.

3. Et odor piscis prohibuit et refugit daemonium in superiores partes Aegypti. Et abiens Raphael colligavit eum ibi et reversus est continuo.

3. And when the demon smelled the odor he fled to the remotest parts of Egypt, and the angel bound him.

4. Et exierunt et clauserunt ostium cubiculi. Et exsurrexit Thobias de lecto et dixit ei: “Surge, soror! Oremus et deprecemur Dominum nostrum, ut faciat super nos misericordiam et sanitatem”.

4. When the door was shut and the two were alone, Tobias got up from the bed and said, "Sister, get up, and let us pray that the Lord may have mercy upon us."

5. Et surrexit, et coeperunt orare et deprecari Dominum, ut daretur illis sanitas. Et coeperunt dicere: “Benedictus es, Deus patrum nostrorum, et benedictum nomen tuum in omnia saecula saeculorum! Benedicant tibi caeli et omnis creatura tua in omnia saecula!

5. And Tobias began to pray, "Blessed art thou, O God of our fathers, and blessed be thy holy and glorious name for ever. Let the heavens and all thy creatures bless thee.

6. Tu fecisti Adam et dedisti illi adiutorium firmum Evam, et ex ambobus factum est semen hominum. Et dixisti non esse bonum hominem solum: “Faciamus ei adiutorium simile sibi”.

6. Thou madest Adam and gavest him Eve his wife as a helper and support. From them the race of mankind has sprung. Thou didst say, `It is not good that the man should be alone; let us make a helper for him like himself.'

7. Et nunc non luxuriae causa accipio hanc sororem meam sed in veritate. Praecipe, ut miserearis mei et illius, et consenescamus pariter sani”.

7. And now, O Lord, I am not taking this sister of mine because of lust, but with sincerity. Grant that I may find mercy and may grow old together with her."

8. Et dixerunt: “Amen, amen!”.

8. And she said with him, "Amen."

9. Et dormierunt per noctem. Et surgens Raguel accersivit servos secum, et abierunt et foderunt foveam.

9. Then they both went to sleep for the night. But Raguel arose and went and dug a grave,

10. Dixit enim: “Ne forte moriatur, et omnibus simus derisio et opprobrium”.

10. with the thought, "Perhaps he too will die."

11. Et, ut consummaverunt fossuram, reversus est Raguel domum et vocavit uxorem suam

11. Then Raguel went into his house

12. et dixit: “Mitte unam ex ancillis, et intrans videat an vivat; et, si mortuus est, ut sepeliamus illum, nemine sciente”.

12. and said to his wife Edna, "Send one of the maids to see whether he is alive; and if he is not, let us bury him without any one knowing about it."

13. Et miserunt ancillam et accenderunt lucernam et aperuerunt ostium, et intravit et invenit illos iacentes et pariter dormientes.

13. So the maid opened the door and went in, and found them both asleep.

14. Et reversa puella nuntiavit eis illum vivere et nihil mali esse.

14. And she came out and told them that he was alive.

15. Et benedixerunt Deum caeli et dixerunt: “Benedictus es, Deus, in omni benedictione sancta et munda, et benedicant tibi omnes sancti tui et omnis creatura tua; et omnes angeli tui et electi tui benedicant tibi in omnia saecula!

15. Then Raguel blessed God and said, "Blessed art thou, O God, with every pure and holy blessing. Let thy saints and all thy creatures bless thee; let all thy angels and thy chosen people bless thee for ever.

16. Benedictus es, quoniam laetificasti me, et non contigit mihi, sicut putabam, sed secundum magnam misericordiam tuam egisti nobiscum.

16. Blessed art thou, because thou hast made me glad. It has not happened to me as I expected; but thou hast treated us according to thy great mercy.

17. Et benedictus es, quoniam misertus es duorum unicorum. Fac illis, Domine, misericordiam et sanitatem et consumma vitam illorum cum misericordia et laetitia”.

17. Blessed art thou, because thou hast had compassion on two only children. Show them mercy, O Lord; and bring their lives to fulfilment in health and happiness and mercy."

18. Tunc praecepit servis suis, ut replerent fossam priusquam lucesceret.

18. Then he ordered his servants to fill in the grave.

19. Et praecepit uxori suae, ut faceret panes multos; et abiens ipse ad gregem adduxit vaccas duas et quattuor arietes et iussit consummari eos, et coeperunt praeparare.

19. After this he gave a wedding feast for them which lasted fourteen days.

20. Et vocavit Thobiam et iuravit illi et dixit ei: “Diebus quattuordecim hinc non recedes, sed hic manebis, manducans et bibens mecum, et laetificabis animam filiae meae multis afflictam doloribus.

20. And before the days of the feast were over, Raguel declared by oath to Tobias that he should not leave until the fourteen days of the wedding feast were ended,

21. Et ex eo, quod possideo, accipe partem dimidiam et vade sanus ad patrem tuum. Et alia dimidia pars, cum mortui fuerimus ego et uxor mea, vestra erit. Forti animo esto, fili! Ego pater tuus sum et Edna mater tua; et tui sumus nos et sororis tuae amodo et in perpetuum. Forti animo esto, fili!”.

21. that then he should take half of Raguel's property and return in safety to his father, and that the rest would be his "when my wife and I die."
