Isaïe, 40

1. Consolez, consolez mon peuple, dit votre Dieu.

1. Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God.

2. Parlez au coeur de Jérusalem, et criez-lui: Que sa servitude est finie, que son iniquité est expiée, qu'elle a reçu de la main de Yahweh le double pour ses péchés.

2. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her service is at an end, her guilt is expiated; Indeed, she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins.

3. Une voix crie :Frayez dans le désert le chemin de Yahweh, aplanissez dans le steppe une route pour notre Dieu !

3. A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the LORD! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God!

4. Que toute vallée soit relevée, toute montagne et toute colline abaissées; que la hauteur devienne une plaine, et les roches escarpées un vallon !

4. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low; The rugged land shall be made a plain, the rough country, a broad valley.

5. Alors la gloire de Yahweh apparaîtra, et toute chair sans exception la verra; car la bouche de Yahweh a parlé.

5. Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all mankind shall see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

6. Une voix dit "Crie !" et on répond : "Que crierai-je ?" "Toute chair est comme l'herbe, et toute sa grâce comme la fleur des champs

6. A voice says, "Cry out!" I answer, "What shall I cry out?" "All mankind is grass, and all their glory like the flower of the field.

7. L'herbe se dessèche, la fleur se flétrit, quand le souffle de Yahweh passe sur elle. Oui, l'homme est comme l'herbe!

7. The grass withers, the flower wilts, when the breath of the LORD blows upon it. (So then, the people is the grass.)

8. L'herbe se dessèche, la fleur se flétrit; mais la parole de Dieu subsiste à jamais! "

8. Though the grass withers and the flower wilts, the word of our God stands forever."

9. Monte sur une haute montagne, toi qui portes à Sion la bonne nouvelle ; élève la voix avec force, toi qui portes à Jérusalem la bonne nouvelle; élève-la, ne crains point ; dis aux villes de Juda "Voici votre Dieu !"

9. Go up onto a high mountain, Zion, herald of glad tidings; Cry out at the top of your voice, Jerusalem, herald of good news! Fear not to cry out and say to the cities of Judah: Here is your God!

10. Voici que le Seigneur Yahweh vient avec puissance; son bras exerce la domination ; Voici que sa récompense est avec lui, et son salaire est devant lui.

10. Here comes with power the Lord GOD, who rules by his strong arm; Here is his reward with him, his recompense before him.

11. Comme un berger, il fera paître son troupeau; il recueillera les agneaux dans ses bras, et les portera dans son sein ; il conduira doucement celles qui allaitent.

11. Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs, Carrying them in his bosom, and leading the ewes with care.

12. Qui a mesuré les eaux dans le creux de sa main, estimé l'étendue des cieux à l'empan, jaugé au boisseau toute la poussière de la terre, pesé les montagnes au crochet, et les collines à la balance?

12. Who has cupped in his hand the waters of the sea, and marked off the heavens with a span? Who has held in a measure the dust of the earth, weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?

13. Qui a dirigé l'esprit de Yahweh, et quel a été son conseiller pour l'instruire? Avec qui a-t-il tenu conseil, pour qu'il l'éclaire,

13. Who has directed the spirit of the LORD, or has instructed him as his counselor?

14. pour qu'il lui enseigne le sentier de la justice, pour qu'il lui enseigne la sagesse, et lui montre le chemin de l'intelligence?

14. Whom did he consult to gain knowledge? Who taught him the path of judgment, or showed him the way of understanding?

15. Voici que les nations sont comme la goutte suspendue à un seau, elles sont réputées comme la poussière dans la balance ; voici que les îles sont la poudre menue qui s'envole.

15. Behold, the nations count as a drop in the bucket, as dust on the scales; the coastlands weigh no more than powder.

16. Le Liban ne suffit pas pour le feu, et ses animaux ne suffisent pas pour l'holocauste.

16. Lebanon would not suffice for fuel, nor its animals be enough for holocausts.

17. Toutes les nations sont devant lui comme rien; il les compte pour néant et vanité.

17. Before him all the nations are as nought, as nothing and void he accounts them.

18. A qui donc comparerez-vous Dieu, et quelle image lui préparerez-vous?

18. To whom can you liken God? With what equal can you confront him?

19. Quand l'ouvrier a coulé une idole, l'orfèvre la recouvre d'or, et il lui tend des chaînettes d'argent.

19. An idol, cast by a craftsman, which the smith plates with gold and fits with silver chains?

20. Le pauvre, qui ne peut offrir beaucoup, choisit un bois qui ne pourrisse point; et il va chercher un ouvrier habile, pour taire une idole qui ne branle point.

20. Mulberry wood, the choice portion which a skilled craftsman picks out for himself, Choosing timber that will not rot, to set up an idol that will not be unsteady? (6b) One man helps another, one says to the other, "Keep on!" (7b) The craftsman encourages the goldsmith, the one who beats with the hammer, him who strikes on the anvil; He says the soldering is good, and he fastens it with nails to steady it.

21. Ne savez-vous pas? N'avez-vous pas entendu dire? Ne vous a-t-on pas annoncé dès le commencement? N'avez-vous pas appris qui a posé les fondements de la terre?

21. Do you not know? Have you not heard? Was it not foretold you from the beginning? Have you not understood? Since the earth was founded

22. Il trône par dessus la votre de la terre, --et ses habitants sont comme des sauterelles; -- il étend les cieux comme un voile, et les déploie comme une tente pour y habiter;

22. He sits enthroned above the vault of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; He stretches out the heavens like a veil, spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.

23. Il livre au néant les puissants, et réduit à rien les juges de la terre

23. He brings princes to nought and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing.

24. à peine sont-ils plantés, à peine sont-ils semés; à peine leur tronc a-t-il pris racine en terre, il souffle sur eux, et ils sèchent, et l'ouragan les emporte comme le chancre.

24. Scarcely are they planted or sown, scarcely is their stem rooted in the earth, When he breathes upon them and they wither, and the stormwind carries them away like straw.

25. A qui donc me comparerez-vous, que je lui sois pareil; dit le Saint?

25. To whom can you liken me as an equal? says the Holy One.

26. Levez les yeux en haut et regardez: qui a créé ces choses? Celui qui fait marcher en ordre leur armée, et qui les appelle toutes par leur nom ; et, à cause de la grandeur de sa puissance et de l'énergie de sa force, pas une ne fait défaut.

26. Lift up your eyes on high and see who has created these: He leads out their army and numbers them, calling them all by name. By his great might and the strength of his power not one of them is missing!

27. Pourquoi dis-tu, ô Jacob, et parles-tu ainsi, ô Israël: "Ma voie est cachée à Yahweh, et mon droit passe inaperçu devant mon Dieu ?"

27. Why, O Jacob, do you say, and declare, O Israel, "My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God"?

28. Ne sais-tu pas, n'as-tu pas entendu? Yahweh est un Dieu éternel, qui a créé les extrémités de la terre, qui ne se fatigue ni ne se lasse, et dont la sagesse est insondable.

28. Do you not know or have you not heard? The LORD is the eternal God, creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint nor grow weary, and his knowledge is beyond scrutiny.

29. Il donne de la force à celui qui est fatigué et redouble la vigueur de celui qui est défaillant.

29. He gives strength to the fainting; for the weak he makes vigor abound.

30. Les jeunes gens se fatiguent et se lassent, et les jeunes gens chancellent,

30. Though young men faint and grow weary, and youths stagger and fall,

31. Mais ceux qui se confient en Yahweh renouvellent leurs forces ; ils élèveront leur vol comme les aigles ; ils courront et ne se fatigueront point ; ils marcheront et ne se lasseront point.

31. They that hope in the LORD will renew their strength, they will soar as with eagles' wings; They will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow faint.
