2 Chroniques, 23

1. La septième année, Joïada, s'étant affermi, prit avec lui comme alliés les centurions Azarias, fils de Jéroham, Ismaël, fils de Johanan, Azarias, fils d'Obed, Maasias, fils d'Adaias, et Elisaphat, fils de Zechri.

1. In the seventh year, Jehoiada took courage and entered a conspiracy with certain captains: Azariah, son of Jehoram; Ishmael, son of Jehohanan; Azariah, son of Obed; Masseiah, son of Adaiah; and Elishaphat, son of Zichri.

2. Ils parcoururent Juda et, ayant rassemblé les lévites de toutes les villes de Juda et les chefs de famille d'Israël, ils vinrent à Jérusalem.

2. They journeyed about Judah, gathering the Levites from all the cities of Judah and also the heads of the Israelite families. When they had come to Jerusalem,

3. Toute l'assemblée fit alliance avec le roi dans la maison de Dieu. Joïada leur dit : "Voici que le fils du roi va régner, comme Yahweh l'a déclaré à l'égard des fils de David.

3. the whole assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God. Jehoiada said to them: "Here is the king's son who must reign, as the LORD promised concerning the sons of David.

4. Voici ce que vous ferez: Le tiers d'entre vous qui entre en service le jour du sabbat, prêtres et lévites, servira comme gardiens des portes;

4. This is what you must do: a third of your number, both priests and Levites, who come in on the sabbath must guard the thresholds,

5. un tiers servira à la maison du roi, et un tiers servira à la porte de Jésod ; tout le peuple sera dans les parvis de la maison de Yahweh.

5. another third must be at the king's palace, and the final third at the Foundation Gate, when all the people will be in the courts of the LORD'S temple.

6. Que personne n'entre dans la maison de Yahweh, excepté les prêtres et les lévites de service eux peuvent y entrer, car ils sont saints ; et tout le peuple doit garder l'observance de Yahweh.

6. Let no one enter the LORD'S house except the priests and those Levites who are ministering. They may enter because they are holy; but all the other people must observe the prescriptions of the LORD.

7. Les lévites entoureront le roi de toutes parts, chacun les armes à la main et, si quelqu'un entre dans la maison, qu'on le mette à mort ; et vous serez près du roi quand il entrera et quand il sortira."

7. The Levites shall surround the king on all sides, each with his weapon drawn. Whoever tries to enter the house must be slain. Stay with the king wherever he goes."

8. Les lévites et tout Juda agirent selon tout ce qu'avait ordonné le prêtre Joïada. Ils prirent chacun leurs gens, ceux qui entraient en service et ceux qui sortaient de service le jour du sabbat ; car le prêtre Joïada n'avait exempté aucune des divisions.

8. The Levites and all Judah did just as Jehoiada the priest commanded. Each brought his men, those who were to come in on the sabbath as well as those who were to depart on the sabbath, since Jehoiada the priest had not dismissed any of the divisions.

9. Le prêtre Joïada remit aux centurions les lances et les boucliers, grands et petits, qui avaient appartenu au roi David, et qui se trouvaient dans la maison de Dieu.

9. Jehoiada the priest gave the captains the spears, shields and bucklers of King David which were in the house of God.

10. Il fit placer tout le peuple, chacun son arme à la main, depuis le côté droit de la maison jusqu'au côté gauche de la maison, près de l'autel et près de la maison, de manière à entourer le roi.

10. He stationed all the people, each with his spear in hand, from the southern to the northern extremity of the enclosure, around the altar and the temple on the king's behalf.

11. On fit avancer le fils du roi, on mit sur lui le diadème et le témoignage, et on l'établit roi. Et Joïada et ses fils l'oignirent, et ils dirent: "Vive le roi !"

11. Then they brought out the king's son, set the crown and the insignia upon him, and made him king. Jehoiada and his sons anointed him, and they cried, "Long live the king!"

12. Lorsqu'Athalie entendit le bruit du peuple , courant et acclamant le roi, elle vint vers le peuple, à la maison de Yahweh.

12. When Athaliah heard the din of the people running and acclaiming the king, she went to the people in the temple of the LORD.

13. Elle regarda, et voici que le roi se tenait sur son estrade à l'entrée ; près du roi étaient les chefs et les trompettes, et tout le peuple du pays était dans la joie; on sonnait des trompettes, et les chantres avec les instruments de musique donnaient des instructions pour les hymnes de louange. Athalie déchira ses vêtements et dit : "Conspiration ! Conspiration !"

13. She looked, and there was the king standing beside his pillar at the entrance, the officers and the trumpeters around him, and all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets, while the singers with their musical instruments were leading the acclaim. Athaliah tore her garments and cried out, "Treason! treason!"

14. Alors le prêtre Joïada fit sortir les centurions, qui étaient à la tête de l'armée, et leur dit : "Faites-la sortir entre les rangs, et que quiconque la suivra soit mis à mort par l'épée !" Car le prêtre avait dit : "Ne la mettez pas à mort dans la maison de Yahweh."

14. Then Jehoiada the priest sent out the captains who were in command of the army; he said to them: "Take her outside through the ranks, and if anyone tries to follow her, let him die by the sword. For," the priest continued, "you must not put her to death in the LORD'S temple."

15. On lui fit place des deux côtés, et elle se rendit à l'entrée de la porte des chevaux, vers la maison du roi, et c'est là qu'ils la mirent à mort.

15. So they seized her, and when she arrived at the entrance to the Horse Gate of the palace, they put her to death there.

16. Joïada conclut entre lui, tout le peuple et le roi une alliance par laquelle ils devaient être le peuple de Yahweh.

16. Then Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and all the people and the king, that they should be the LORD'S people.

17. Et tout le peuple entra dans la maison de Baal, et ils la démolirent; ils brisèrent ses autels et ses images, et ils tuèrent devant les autels Mathan, prêtre de Baal.

17. And all the people went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed its altars and images, and they slew Mattan, the priest of Baal, before the altars.

18. Joïada mit des gardiens dans la maison de Yahweh, sous l'autorité des prêtres et des lévites, que David avait distribués dans la maison de Yahweh pour qu'ils offrissent des holocaustes à Yahweh, comme il est écrit dans la loi de Moïse, au milieu des réjouissances et des chants, d'après les ordonnances de David.

18. Then Jehoiada gave the charge of the LORD'S temple into the hands of the levitical priests, to whom David had assigned turns in the temple for offering the holocausts of the LORD, as is written in the law of Moses, with rejoicing and song, as David had provided.

19. Il établit les portiers aux portes de la maison de Yahweh, afin qu'il n'y entrât aucune personne souillée en quelque manière.

19. Moreover, he stationed guards at the gates of the LORD'S temple so that no one unclean in any respect might enter.

20. Il prit les centurions, les hommes considérés, ceux qui avaient autorité sur le peuple et tout le peuple du pays, et il fit descendre le roi de la maison de Yahweh. Ils entrèrent dans la maison du roi par la porte supérieure, et ils firent asseoir le roi sur le trône de la royauté.

20. Then he took the captains, the nobles, the rulers among the people, and all the people of the land, and led the king out of the LORD'S house. When they had come within the upper gate of the king's house, they seated the king upon the royal throne.

21. Tout le peuple du pays se réjouit, et la ville fut tranquille ; on fit mourir Athalie par l'épée.

21. All the people of the land rejoiced and the city was quiet, now that Athaliah had been put to death by the sword.
